Book Description
For more than 20 years, the books of photographer Charlie Waite have enthralled lovers of landscape photography everywhere. Now, in a very special collection, he has tried something new; the first volume devoted solely to his black and white images--more than 50 breathtaking plates--many never before published. In the great tradition of Edward Weston and Ansel Adams, he finds in black-and-white a perfect vehicle for revealing his creative voice. These photographs are rich in reflective surfaces, filled with texture, luminosity, and mystery; they capture the subtle shades of desert sand and sky as camels trek through; the vivid personalities of three old men sitting side-by-side in Lijiang, China; the twisted beauty of an unusually shaped tree in Lombardy. Amateur photographers will particularly appreciate the plate index with information on the camera used, the lens, film, exposure, and filter.

Great photos from a master.......2007-07-26
Charlie Waite's black and white photographs are every bit as good as his colour work. I particularly appreciate his infrared work shown in this book. Although I am a digital photographer now and this book features only film based pictures, it is very educational just to look and absorb Charlie Waite's images. Well worth the price. Highly recommended (by me!)
Design Is Not A Subject.......2004-03-18
In the nicest possible way, it is difficult to argue with successful published photographers who lead classes to exotic destinations, but let me try. Into every camera, besides film or flash card, is loaded the aesthetics of the medium. Each release of the shutter a photographer tests their knowledge of it and against what they see "In Their Minds Eye." The first part of seeing with "The Mind's Eye" is choosing a subject to photograph and then coaxing design to help organize the image. Mr. Waite's travel snapshots of the world fall below this threshold. The SUBJECT takes a back seat to DESIGN. A few of the images, like the terra cotta face with water pipe at the mouth, page 101, is not worth film, paper or ink. Many of Mr. Waite's images are bad forgeries of SUBJECTS other photographers' have done with greater care and ability. Mr. Waite's travels took him to America and his subject was the jaws of an earth mover and rock. If he could have spent a few of his travel days moving through the "Grand Circle" in the Southwestern Landscape of America, he would not of included so many cliché photographs of Tuscany. When I buy a book, what I am thinking about is to revisit it, and feel the same way about the photographer's efforts as when I purchased it. For Mr. Waite's book "In My Mind's Eye, Seeing In Black & White", this purchase was returned for the lack of the latter. Craig Carlson, Chula Vista, California, carlson1@mail.sdsu.edu.

Just what we needed.......2003-08-12
Dark Epics has all the information a Storyteller needs to manage a LARP. Although I run a small game, this book is still a major resource.
The book includes an extended weapons list, rules for managing lores and influences and tips for organizing game and delegating responsibilities.
I highly recommend this book for Storytellers.

The tradition of pets in the White House goes all the way back to the Founding Fathers. From the parrot and foxhounds of George Washington to Spot and Barney, the current canines of the Bushes, the First Family's animal companions have always had a special place in America's heart. These various (and often exotic) animals have enjoyed the special privileges of living in the nation's capital, giving them access to the scenes of power. So when something goes awry in the White House, who better to solve it than these pet detectives? Did Rex, Ronald Reagan's King Charles spaniel, play a role in uncovering Irangate? What mystery did Franklin Roosevelt's Scottish terrier, Fala, uncover when left on the Aleutian Islands? How would some of the more unusual pets, such as John Quincy Adams's pet alligator or Calvin Coolidge hippopotamus, search for clues in the halls of the Executive Mansion? The authors and stories are:
"Martha's Parrot" by Edward D. Hoch "A Mimicry of Mockingbirds" by Lillian Stewart Carl "Alligator Tears" by Bill Crider "The Greatest Sacrifice" by Brendan DuBois "Tabby Won't Tell" by Jan Grape "Under Hoof" by Jeffrey Marks "The Princess and the Pickle" by Carolyn Wheat "Remember the Maine?" by Jeanne Dams "The Secret Staff" by Janet Pack "Trouble A-Bruin" by Esther Friesner "Izzy's Shoe-In" by P. N. Elrod "Fala and The Ghost of Bulows Minde" by Kate Grilley "Dr. Couch Saves a President" by Nancy Pickard "Sax and the Single Cat" by Carole Nelson Douglas
Book Description
The book covers the prophesied end times, the two witnesses, the rapture (as it is perceived by men and what the text really says), the ending of the "secret of Elohim", the message of the two witnesses, the elect, the secret of lawlessness, the final conclusion of the day of wrath, the bride (wife) of YHWH, and more. From a Messianic perspective, specifically that of a Natsarim (follower of Yahushua of Natsarith), it will reveal Scriptural texts only to be understood in the End of Days. The following pages excerpted for you were chosen because they provide a broad overview of what many already understand generally, but the details have not been understood. It is not an attack on Catholics at all, but rather it may help Catholics (and ex-Catholics) comprehend better what the Catholic institution sees as its primary function. It will also help "protestants" understand that they have not fallen very far from the tree that gave them birth. See 1 Cor. 14:26 for a look at how our assembling together as believers has changed. The excerpt that follows also underscores what is called "nicolaitans" - lording over (conquering) the laity. Laity is just a common word for the people.

WHAT'S IN A NAME????? BIBLE BASED FACTS????.......2007-03-01
DECEPTION #1 - JESUS AND JEHOVAH ARE THE NAMES OF THE FATHER AND SON,
IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT NAME YOU CALL THEM.
How can you think the names of salvation doesn't matter, would you allow me to call you any name I like? Would you allow your boss to put any name he liked on your pay check? NO, you wouldn't, so why do you think we can give the creator any name we want. Jesus and Jehovah are not the names of the father and son. These names come from the adversary Satan. The father and son both have Hebrew names this is confirmed in the original Hebrew text, and in your KJV. In the book of Psalms 68:4 we read this:
Psalms 68:4 Sing unto the Almighty, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name YAH, and rejoice before him.
Yes my people, the creator of heaven and earth, name is Yah. In your KJV the name listed, is JAH. That is incorrect, there is no letter J, J equivalent, or J sound in the Hebrew language. In fact the letter J is one of the newest letters in the English alphabet. It came into usage sometime after 1630; Jesus or Jehovah wasn't in the original 1611 KJV (King James Version).
Many of the Hebrew Prophets carried the name Yah within their names.
SUCH AS: OBADYAH which means Servant of Yah,
ZechariYah - Yah Remembers
IsaiYah - Yah is salvation
ZephaniYah - Yah Hides
The Phrase Hallelu'Yah means PRAISE YOU YAH.
Notice in your KJV (King James Version) the spelling of those names are different, Isaiah doesn't have the YAH at the end, nor does the other names and Hallelu'YAH has JAH in the suffix. Why is that? Simple the adversary Satan is trying to take the name of salvation away from you. He is deceiving you into calling upon false GODS. YAH's name mean THE ETERNAL, THE SELF EXISTENCE, Jehovah means nothing, it's a vain name. Yah said not to take his name in vain, this is one of the first commandments.
Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of YAH in vain; for YAH will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
He will not hold you guiltless brothers and sisters, Christianity has put you into a confrontation with the most high. Christianity has deceived you into taking the creator's name in vain, you have made it useless, by calling him a false name. Jehovah is not a Hebrew name, Jehovah is not an English translation of the fathers Hebrew name. His name is on high; YAH does not need a translation for his name. All men on the face of the earth, in every language can pronounce his name, YAH.
In the KJV (King James Version) Exodus 20 doesn't mention Yah's name, it calls him by two titles, Lord and GOD.
Exodus 20:7, Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
The KJV says not to take the name of the Lord in vain. LORD is not a name it's a title, So is GOD. Lord and God both have roots in Paganism, both can be traced back to ancient pagan deities. Many bible dictionaries and concordance will tell you Wherever Lord and God is written in Scripture that the name should be YAH. If you have a concordance in your KJV bible, look under the name Yahweh, it will read this:
.........Whenever the words Lord and God appear in large and small capital letters, the original Hebrew reads YHWH.
YAH IS THE ALMIGHTY, THE CREATOR, THE HEAVENLY FATHER, THE MIGHTY ONE, THE ETERNAL, THE SET APART ONE. These are righteous titles, his name is above any title, he wants us to call upon him by his name. Jehovah is not his name, nor has it ever been.
Yah the almighty didn't name his son Jesus. Jesus is a Greco-Roman- English hybrid name. Just as Jehovah, Jesus is not a Hebrew name nor does it have any meaning, it too is a vain name. Jesus was not in the original 1611 King James Version of the bible,, . Nor was the name Jesus Present in any of the earlier English bible translations. The name Jesus isn't 500 years old. So how can this be the name by which men must call upon to be saved, if it didn't exist at the time the messiah walked the earth?
The messiah's true name is Yahoshua, it means Yah's salvation, his name tells his mission. Names are given in the Hebrew Culture based upon the character of the person. I was not born with the name Obadyah Ben Ysrayl, I took on this name after I found my true life calling. My name in Hebrew means Servant of Yah who is a son of Israel.
When the angel pronounced the messiah's name to Joseph, he told him his name would have something to do with saving:
Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son. and you shall call his name Yahoshua for he shall save his people from their sins.
He shall bring Salvation to his people Israel. The name Jesus, on the other hand, has no association with any thing, but deception.
Challenging traditions........2007-01-21
This is Lew White's second book following "Fossilized Customs".
He challenges traditions that we all are familiar with, ranging from tithing to celebrating Christmas.
Mr.White explains Nicolaitianism which had been a mystery for me until recently.
Other topics that may be of interest to readers are the Two Witnesses, the Tribulation,Rapture, and the 7 assemblies of Revelation.
I recommend this book as well as Lew's latest book "Torah Zone".
If you want TRUTH.... This is a MUST!.......2007-01-04
Lew may not have all of the truth... But he has a better handle on it than 99.9% of the so called church... be it protestant or catholic. This should be on the Truth Seekers "A" List.

Book Description
In this book Sherene Razack explores what happens when whites look at non-whites, and in particular at non-white women. Most studies examining this encounter between dominant and subordinate groups focus on how it occurs in films, books, and popular culture. In contrast, Razack addresses how non-white women are viewed, and how they must respond, in classrooms and courtrooms. Examining the discussion of equity issues in the classroom and immigration and sexual violence cases in the courtroom, she argues that non-white women must often present themselves as culturally different instead of oppressed. Seen as victims of their own oppressive culture who must be pitied and rescued by white men and women, non-white women cannot then be seen as subjects. This book makes clear why we must be wary of educational and legal strategies that begin with saving 'Other' women. It offers powerful arguments for why it is important to examine who are the saviours and who are the saved, and what we must do to disrupt these historical relations of power.
Customer Reviews:
an excellent complement to anti-oppressive analyses of popular media.......2006-01-09
as outlined in razack's introduction, this book fills a much needed void in anti-oppression literature by analyzing power structures in the law and education fields. the arguments are compelling, the evidence thorough, and the tone uncompromising. depending on where you're at with your politics and capacity for self-reflection, this can either be a very exciting and inspiring book, or cause for defensiveness / guilt-ridden naval gazing. regardless of what you're response is, i'm confident you'll have one, because razack is taking on the roots of some of the most significant societal problems we face.
Analytical, interesting and even easy to read.......2003-11-30
After seeing the two poor reviews given to this book, I had to add my two cents. This is an excellent book that covers a fairly wide range of topics related to discrimination and identities including gender-based persecution refugee hearings, problems with storytelling in multicultural settings and conceptions of disability. Razack writes from an anti-imperialist, antiracist and feminist standpoint, and her tone is challenging. I suspect that those two who gave this book bad reviews are uncomfortable with admitting that white, able-bodied men are privileged.
Riveting and ahead of its time.......2003-01-31
Razack's analysis has riveting implications for the social sciences and humanities. It is an influencial and critical work, ahead of its time, and has the potential to be broadly applied to many fields. Although, Razack mainly deconstructs the fields of law and education, "Looking White People in the Eye," is likely to cause ripples throughout academia.
Questiong the very premise upon which we base our disciplines--such as rationale choice theory, liberalism and North American concepts of the individual--Razack calls into question issues as diverse as disability, immigration and progressive education. A varied and fascinating read, indeed.
Not only is Razack's work on target, but, utilizing "narrative for social change," she is also accessible and practical. The chapters are easily divided into works that can be read alone--although, I recommend a quick skim through the first chapter for background.
A fantastic read--I highly recommend it.
PS--I don't hate men. I am white and straight and work for a large corporation. My fist is not in the air, right now.
What a waste of trees!.......2002-08-12
She should not have massacred precious trees to print this.
What an ecological shame.
Boilerplate genderracialpolitik w/ armchair socialism.......2002-07-13
Not much to say, other than reader beware.
If you're a buzz-cut fist-in-air man-hating lesbian feminist, you'll love this book. If you're a pride-marching white-hating angry to the core Person Of Color, you'll love this book. If you're still writing love letters to Lenin and dreaming of the day when we'll all live in a Worker's Paradise, you'll love this book.
For everyone else who lives in reality, it's like a visit to the dentist's chair. Every page is painful, and yet we are reminded that every page is supposed to be good for us. Drill, drill, drill. The usual suspects are trotted out: white people, heterosexuals, capitalists. And they are summarily executed.
If you are an undergrad and your humanities professor is shoving this book down your throat--as is most likely the case--I suggest in your off time you track down some Christina Hoff Sommers and innoculate yourself against Razack's leftist indoctrination.
Book Description
Originally written for Tibetan lay people, Opening the Eye of New Awareness is a succinct, thorough overview of the doctrines of Buddhism as they have been practiced for a thousand years in Tibet. In his first book on Buddhist philosophy to appear in English, the Dalai Lama discusses the need for religious practice and the importance of kindness and compassion, and a new introduction by the translator places these teachings in their proper historical context. Completed in 1963, just four years after his escape from Tibet and four years after completing his religious education, it is a work of consummate scholarship — not an edited transcript of public lectures, but His Holiness's own summation of Buddhist doctrine and practice. Nowhere in his many subsequent works does one find a more clear and concise exposition of the essentials of Buddhist thought.
Customer Reviews:
Masterful introduction........2006-03-13
This is the thesis of H. H. The Dalai Lama. Giving a strong foundation in the basic principles of Buddhism, this book builds to explain in detail the various states of meditation and connects each point to the other for a grand and wonderful whole picture.
This powerful book is short enough to be read in one day, but profound enough to be studied for years. And as always it retains the warm and straight foreward manner in which this wonderful author is known for teaching. Also for those unfamiliar with the Dalai Lama's other books, most of them are compilations from lectures, etc. This book was actually written by him.
Blessings and peace to all beings!
A significant and valued contribution to Buddhist Studies........2000-05-05
Opening The Eye Of New Awareness was written by the Dalai Lama in 1963, four years after his escape from Tibet and the communist Chinese. Opening The Eye Of New Awareness was written for both Tibetan lay people and westerners, and provides a basic summation of Buddhist doctrines and practices as they were practiced in Tibet for more than a thousand years. Opening The Eye Of New Awareness is a very highly recommended work of Buddhist scholarship, wisdom, and compassion. This Wisdom Publications edition is enhanced with a new introduction by Professor Donald Lopez which provides valuable insight into the historical and philosophical context of His Holiness' writings.
Book Description

In the 1970s, Bernard Clayton's The Complete Book of Breads became the bible for bread bakers everywhere. In the years since its publication, however, new equipment such as dough-mixing attachments and food processors, and new products such as fast-acting yeast and specialty bread flour, have revolutionized the kitchen. A new era requires a new book, and Bernard Clayton has obliged with his New Complete Book of Breads. Here you'll find 200 of Clayton's original recipes from his earlier book, all revised with modern equipment and products in mind. In addition, Clayton includes 100 new recipes gathered during the course of his research and travels as well as his interactions with friends and readers. Whether you're hungry for breads, rolls, muffins, popovers, seasonal favorites, or exotic delights destined to become favorites, you'll find them all in the New Complete Book of Breads.
Book Description
First published in 1973, Bernard Clayton's The Complete Book of Breads immediately became a modern classic; under his guidance, a generation of home bakers was introduced to the seductive pleasures of baking and produced their first loaves. But new products and equipment revolutionized the kitchen, and these changes inspired Bernard Clayton's New Complete Book of Breads, which first appeared in 1987. With an electric mixer, a food processor, or a bread machine, and with faster-acting yeasts, anyone could produce home-baked loaves in a fraction of the time bread-baking once took. The availability of a wide variety of flours and specialty products, once found only in health-food and gourmet stores, opened up a world of possibilities. Clayton revised 200 of the original recipes and added 100 more with these new ingredients and equipment in mind.
Now America's best-loved bread-baking authority returns with the 30th anniversary edition of the New Complete Book of Breads, the definitive version of this baking classic. Clayton has written a new introduction, added a glossary, updated the sections on ingredients and equipment, and gone through every recipe, correcting and refining each one. The inviting new design keeps Clayton's explicit, easy-to-follow instructional format and makes the book easy to use.
In these pages, home bakers will find an extraordinary range of variety, nearly enough to supply a new bread a day for a year. There are wheat breads -- Honey-Lemon, Walnut, Buttermilk; sourdough breads; corn breads; breads flavored with herbs or spices or enriched with cheese or fruits and nuts; and little breads -- Kaiser Rolls, Grandmother's Southern Biscuits, English Muffins, and Popovers, to name a few. For the baker who observes the holidays with a fresh loaf there are Challah and Italian Panettone.
Offering classic recipes while making use of modern kitchen technology, this comprehensive volume is an indispensable reference for the novice or experienced home baker looking to make the best bread with ease.

Great Guide for Most of Us.......2007-10-01
For someone without a lot of baking experience who wants to know how to make a wide variety of breads and baked goods using readily available ingredients and supplies, this may be the best choice out there. There are recipes for virtually every type of non-pastry bread or baked flour product, without too many unnecessary details or confusing diversions from the task at hand. If you are an avid amateur baking purist, you might find the book's almost exclusive reliance on commonplace industrial leavening agents such as dry yeast and baking powder, and otherwise plain presentation of the art of baking, to be a trifle unsophisticated. However, the book also includes instructions for more elaborate procedures, such as making and using various leavening starters, for those so inclined. This book de-mystifies bread making and offers many helpful tips and shortcuts that are most welcome to those that just want to make a variety of breads in a typical home kitchen, without making a lifelong quest out of it. Illustrations are sparse, but are judiciously included.
The recipes I've tried were easy to follow and resulted in a delicious end product, every time. This is a cookbook, that can be taken into the kitchen and used one recipe at a time. You don't need to read large sections of the book or flip through multiple pages to follow most recipes. Consequently, there is a lot of repetition in the instructions and the book is thicker than it needs to be, strictly speaking. If you bake all the time the repetition will be unnecessary. But for most of us, the self-sufficent presentation will probably prove quite handy.
Review is based on the 2006 edition.
unusual recipes.......2007-09-27
I first tried the Blue Ribbon French Bread recipe while trying to find a Po-Boy bread formula. This recipe was just unique enough to be perfect! The author definitely isn't presenting the same old tired combinations every other cookbook author has. Clayton is unique. You might not appreciate it if you are a new baker but you will quickly enough. Easy to follow with a little thought and he allows for all the mixing scenarios.
The Best Comprehensive Bread Recipe Book Ever!.......2007-06-01
These recipes are very easy to make and each one has been so delicious. I have been making bread for over 55 years, and these recipes are so varied and elegant on the palette. So different from any that I have made in the past. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves home made breads.
a real bread 'bible'.......2007-05-12
Well, you cannot beat this book for shear volume. Almost every single page on this very thick book has at least one recipe on it. Bernard Clayton has been baking bread for longer than a lot of us have been alive. I would bet that you will be able to find a version of whatever type of bread you are looking for in the book. I didn't give it five stars for personal reasons. I am an artisan bread baker and have gotten into the principles of using less yeast and going for the slow ferment. That being the case, the book feels 'dated' to me in areas where Bernard calls for what seems like so much yeast to me now, and sugar. That said, I do recommend this book and consider it a welcome addition to my collection, it is a wealth of recipes to have on ones' shelf in one volume. For beginners it is great because much of the recipes are very straight forward, no fussing around. And for the more experienced, or those that are into the slow-rise, etc,
one can just alter the technique.
an instant bread maker.......2007-04-09
I bought this book a year ago and I love it so much I had to take the time to tell someone about it. If you have never made bread before or thought it was too much work...all you need is this book and a stand up mixer to do the work for you. Most basic white breads can be ready for rising in 20 minutes without much work. The organization may look confusing at first glance, but it is not after making a few of the simple white breads which my family love and become disappointed when they see the store bought bread in the cupboard. The "rich white bread" recipe is a staple in our home and lasts for a full week when stored in the fridge -that is if it isn't eaten first. The festive bread recipes are also fun and bring something special to the holidays. The Finnish bread is excellent. For social get-togethers, you can bring the bread and still have plenty of time to get ready while it rises.
