Hardly New - first published in 1989.......2001-10-04
If you are expecting a new book based round the 3 laws of robotics, by hte great writer Isaac Asimov, whoops. Each book has a different writer, Stephen Leigh the first, and COrdell Scotten Book 2.
A man who has forgotten his name, a city that changes itself to fit the occupants, a robot form shifting robot. A tower that holds the keys to Perihelion, which is a stop in a galaxy wide warp point instantaneous transport system. This will certainly stretch your imagination.
Book One starts off OK, but by book 3 you're getting bored and confused. It never seems to be going anywhere or to get tehre. I have all 6 books in hte series, but have never botehred to read past book 4.
It's a shame that he has allowed this.
The parallel series which is just called RObot City was better, but that was also published some time ago, and I never found beyond book 3 of 6.

So, it may not be the best story ever written, but it does carry on the Asimov Robots storyline. If you can quote the three laws of robotics, you gotta read this whole series. It will not knock your socks off or anything, but you will enjoy it.
Shape changing robot.......2000-03-27
I though this book was interesting because of a robot that can manipulate its body and obeys the three laws of robotics very loosly. Also I love any book that deals with Isaac Asimov's ideas. I suggest if you like this book you should read also I, Robot a collection of short stories dealling with robots and the three laws of robotics.

The saga of Robot is continued in this novel, which can only be described as exellent, with a dose of brilliant, and a side of superlative. The story of Robot City is expressed through the further development of the characters Derec, a man who crash landed in the aptly named Robot City, a city run and inhabited entirely by robots. Having lost his memory in the crash landing, he takes the name of Derec, which is the manufacturer of his jump suit. Throughout his journey, he meets the mysterios Katherine. After a bout of being captured by extraterrestrials, and such other madcap antics, Derec and Katherine are deposited in Robot City together. It is here that the plot begins to thicken, and the character development becomes signifigant. This volume of the series is a perfect book for any science fiction fan, and perfectly expresses the three laws of Robotics and their applications in the real world.

This is a great cook book. I've had it for years, and made about everything in it, and then varied everything in it (my wife and I no longer eat meat). The best part is all the sauces -- more often than not I now go to this book for a sauce for some other stir fry I'm making. The other reviewer's comment about needing really high heat is sort of true, but my electric stove and flat bottom wok do ok. Not quite flash cooked, but close enough to be very very very yummy! Worth your time, if you're interested in making great food in the wok.

When I used to wok, I could never get the sauces right. With this book, I've mastered them! I have tried at least a dozen of the recipes in the book and have yet to have a bad "wok" experience. The flavors of the sauces are wonderful and rich, and most of the recipes have basic ingredients that can be found in your local market. They are easy and fun.

It was my first experience with wok cooking recipies. I loved the idea of quick cooking very fresh ingredients at very high temperature. However, many household stoves may not be able to generate the necessary temperature to flash cook the recipies as intended. I solved the problem with a propane out door burner availble at many retail outlet and hardware stores. It generates the necessary heat and keeps the kithchen clean. With this equipment the recipies are fantastic. It is a true healthy and flavorful fusion cuisine.
Outrageously done on show plates, but are they really good?.......1999-01-31
Put long, whole uncut string beans like snakes crawling inside your dish, and call it rainbow? Decorated a cooked dish with lot of small whole raw tomatos and jammed them among the cooked food? There is no way that I could accept such kind of gimmicky stuff and treated them as Chinese food. Putting raw stuff in or on a well cooked Chinese dish is just like turning it into something totally messed up. But I can understand that kind arrangements are just for photos in the book. Too gimmicky, man. And one more thing to remind: Never used too fancy, too complicated designed, and too colorful plates to hold the FOOD; as plates could only be used to make the food on them stand out, not bury them or block them with strong colors and patterns. Such disturbing distraction is the worst dream that any restaurant owner or chef would commit mindlessly.

Great fusion cooking book.......2003-10-12
The recipes are first-rate. I do a lot of "real" Asian cooking, and I find Hom's recipes a fabulous blend of "western" style cooking fused with "Asian" combinations of ingredients. Each recipe I've tried is straightforward with easy-to-follow directions, easy-to-find ingredients, and produces supreme results. My children, who often turn up their noses at Asian food, really like everything I've tried out of this book.
The only reason why I didn't give this cookbook 5 stars are because there are a few editorial errors in it. I believe there's a new edition out -- I'd try that one first to see if the errors are fixed -- mostly dealing with page numbers not matching in the front explanatory section of the book.

Ken Hom was born in USA of Chinese parents. He is, quite rightly, regarded as one of the world's leading authorities on Chinese cooking. Living now, in France, Ken Hom has written extensively, describing his recipes and techniques. In Travels with a Hot Wok, he presents 160 recipes with a unique blend of West and East - easy to prepare dishes from around the world, as presented on his BBC television series.
But more than just a collection of recipes, Travels with a Hot Wok covers equipment, ingredients, cooking techniques, and basic cooking knowledge. Of utmost importance, the 'equipment' section includes how to choose a wok, what size is best, how to season it and clean it. His recipes are divided into eight sections that cover appetizers, soups, fish and shellfish, meat, poultry, vegetables, rice noodles and pasta, and finally even desserts (yes, you can prepare some amazing desserts in a wok). The incedible Chinese Cuisine.......2001-09-19
It is the best Chinese recipe book I ever possessed. It's divided in sections so that you can find any course of your dinner easily. He is incredible cause he creates simple dishes in a short time from which you can surprise your guests and prove yourself an excellent cook. It also contains a good ingredient vocabulary which will surely make it easier for you to learn about new greens.

So okay, you go out and buy yourself a wok, you turn up the heat, you get out the oil - and then what? Ken Hom (one of the greatest Chinese chefs - and a terrific TV personality) will tell you. Right from the very basics, like how to prepare your new wok before putting any food in it.
Hom's absolute passion for Asian food, and in particular for Wok-cooked Asian food, shines through as you find page after page (bless me, 224 of them, I see!) of amazing recipes (over 150 for the punk accountants amongst you). But Ken Hom offers more than just a recipe and a photo. He strategically places notes on ingredient choice, preparation, and even cultural explanations based on his childhood in China. Added to this is information gleaned from his travels in Asia, and his exploration of Asian cuisine.
Ken Hom is truly international. Born of Chinese parents, raised in USA and now living in France, he travels frequently to Asia to learn more about his art. I saw him recently on a French television program, sharing the secrets of French cuisine with a top chef. Talk about depth of knowledge - Ken Hom knew almost as much as the other guy!
