Book Description
Based on the Simontons' experience with hundreds of patients at their world-famous Cancer Counseling and Research Center, Getting Well Again introduces the scientific basis for the "will to live."
In this revolutionary book the Simontons profile the typical "cancer personality": how an individual's reactions to stress and other emotional factors can contribute to the onset and progress of cancer -- and how positive expectations, self-awareness, and self-care can contribute to survival. This book offers the same self-help techniques the Simonton's patients have used to successfully to reinforce usual medical treatment -- techniques for learning positive attitudes, relaxation, visualization, goal setting, managing pain, exercise, and building an emotional support system.

Blame Has No Place in Healing.......2007-07-05
I am not a cancer survivor, but rather a physician interested in the mind-body connection. I have done a lot of reading in this field and am definitely a proponent of the now fairly well-established theory that the mind and body are indivisibly linked. This is good news for everyone, and means that literally all patients, with proper guidance, can be taught how to rally their mental resources to optimize their chance of recovery. This book does a good job of showing how, though (perhaps necessarily) spends nearly equal time defending it's claims with stories of healing that support its concepts.
I have one issue with this book, and it's a big one. While I wholeheartedly believe in the mind-body link, I do not believe in - nor do I support others in their belief of - a "cancer personality." In fact, the very term is loaded, in that it ascribes blame (or at least cause and effect) for one's illness squarely on the patient.
I suppose this is not surprising - there is still much that is not known about cancer - and as an "evolved" race, modern-day man is very resistant to the idea that there are still things over which we have very little control. Though well-intentioned, it is, nonetheless, a dangerous belief. Certainly I have seen patients who seem to fit Simonton's "cancer personality" - and I have seen just as many cancer patients who do not. And the unsettling fact remains that many, many people sporting Simonton's "cancer personality" to a tee will never develop cancer at all.
Ironically, the issue I have with this book is likely also at the heart of the book's popularity - human beings are unfailingly optimistic, and control-driven - we want desperately to believe we can control everything because to admit that we don't has terrifying implications - particularly for those currently facing the uncertainty of serious illness.
But our addiction to control has it's own problems - not least of which is that it flies in the face of acceptance, which is an essential step in coming to grips with major life change. Acceptance of illness does not mean accepting the inevitability of death from disease, but it does mean releasing ourselves from blame and guilt. We are all doing the best we can, all imperfect, all flawed. If disease were really caused by personality faults - even the specific ones described - we would all be doomed.
Boring and depressing though it may be to hear, cancer is probably "caused" more by genetics and environment than we want to believe. Ironically, the single biggest contributing factor to many cancers likely remains our own choices - lifestyle choices such as smoking, drugs, alcohol, unsafe sex, a poor diet and lack of sleep and exercise that we know with certainty place stress on our bodies and predispose us to all kinds of disease. Our mental attitude definitely is a part of that, and I do believe that stress can impair the healing process - and perhaps even in some cases, cause illness. But I don't believe it is at the heart of why most people get ill.
This is a valuable book which does guide patients in taking responsibility for their healing. My issue is that I think it unfairly ascribes responsibility (and blame) to the patient for becoming ill in the first place.
However, because I think this book remains a real resource to cancer patients, I do not want to give it less than three stars - I am not a cancer patient, and I would not want to be responsible for someone with cancer skipping over what for them, may be a potentially helpful resource. Illness, and especially uncertainty, are dark companions, and people need to follow their hearts as well as their minds in finding their way through difficult times. Take the good this book has to offer - but leave behind the blame. It has no place in your journey back to health.
Add an Edge to Your Cancer Treatment.......2007-05-24
I give away many of my books after reading them myself, and often buy books as special occasion gifts for others. However, this book is the only one that I have bought repeatedly over the years to give away. It is a fast and interesting read that provides, in a very understandable and concise way, how to use specific mental exercises to combat the multiplication of cancer cells. Favorable results have been documented for many years.
This book should come with diagnosis.......2006-08-24
This book is essential. I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in late 2003 and was given this book as a gift from a survivor I'd never met and still haven't to date. Because of her thoughtfulness, I was able to better understand, work with my treatment and get well again. I have given my copy away, that copy passed on by the person I gave it to again and I trust again since that time. Another friend of a friend was diagnosed in Florida (I'm in Michigan, my benefactor in California) and this was the first thing I did (after saying a prayer for her). Best Wishes for a speedy and full recovery to any/all who have need for this book.
Simonton's "Getting Well".......2005-10-01
Book is very informative and offers hope and help. It is far too old and needs to be updated to more current situations but many of the facts remain true and it is still probably the best cancer help book out there.
An essential book for anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer.......2005-09-10
The theme of this book is that with positive expectancy of treatment and the patient's positive outlook, you CAN turn your cancer diagnosis into one of renewal of health. A patient CAN do this! Of the many books we have read, this one is outstanding. Dr. Simonton's book, Getting Well Again, is referenced in other volumes as well. The ideas are concrete, meaningful, and most of all---can be implemented. Positive expectancy is the key theme. We have read and reread its passages many times and have received renewed HOPE and OPTIMISM with every reading.
Book Description
If you own a convection oven, but don’t really know how to use it, this book is for you.
Beatrice Ojakangas, an authority on convection cooking and author of more than two dozen previous cookbooks, explains how to use your convection oven to achieve perfect results in dramatically less time than with a conventional oven. You will learn:
*How to cook a whole meal in your oven–from meat to side dishes to dessert–all at the same time
*How to cook multiple batches of cookies, cakes, and pies on three or even four oven shelves
*How to roast and bake in a third less time than in a conventional oven while achieving even better results
*How to calculate the correct temperature and timing for convection cooking if you are using a standard recipe
And here are more than 150 great recipes for snacks and appetizers; pizza and foccacia; soups; roast beef, lamb, pork and poultry; savory pies and tarts; casseroles and pasta; vegetables; yeast breads and quick breads; cakes, cookies, pies, and pastries; and much, much more. Try Melted Onion Tart with Parmigiano-Reggiano, Mexican Vegetable Tortilla Soup, Tandoori Salmon with Cucumber Sauce, Asian Spiced Roast Whole Chicken, and Cocoa Cake with Easy Buttercream Frosting, among so many imaginative and easy dishes.
By circulating hot air around food, convection ovens cook and brown food much more quickly and at a lower temperature than conventional ovens, while retaining food’s natural juiciness and flavor. With this book you will be able to save significant amounts of time and effort while turning out delicious dishes for everyday meals and easy entertaining.
Customer Reviews:
The text is printed in BLUE.......2007-10-05
The book is very helpful, especially for those new to convection cooking, but unfortunately the main text is printed in blue ink and not a particularly dark blue. This makes it much more difficult to read than black ink, especially for older eyes. I found that I had to really concentrate on the reading rather than on the content.
waste of money.......2007-05-08
We have a new (optionally) convection oven. The instruction manual and the manufacture's web site were not clear on when to use the convection oven or not. Although this book claimed to answer every question about convection cooking it kept on referring the reader to the instruction manual for the oven.
The book is, as far as I'm concerned, a candiddate for recycling
Great Book!.......2007-04-03
Just bought my first convection oven and was looking for a good guide with some recipes. I love the info at the beginning of each chapter covering the basic how-to's for different food groups. I'm a senior with poor eyesight so would have preferred easier to read print. All in all, a great book.
an outstanding contribution to anyone's cookbook collection.......2007-03-23
I want to heartily recommend this cookbook to anyone even remotely thinking about buying it. I know food all too well, being a good cook, an even better eater, and having previously been in the food business myself. Beatrice is clearly an outstanding chef, and while I bought this only because I had a new convection oven whose usefulness I really wanted to maximize, her recipes are really top notch. I especially recommend the Lasagna, which has a great and easy pasta sauce recipe in it which has changed forever the way I approach this staple. The lasagna is to die for and my previous recipe was no slouch either, so trust me - this is a must - though I use fresh and not frozen spinach in mine. The banana nut bread is also just great. She has many little tricks, tips, ideas about cooking. Get it - it's not expensive, and you won't be sorry.
Love It!!.......2007-01-17
When I got my new Convection ovens, I noticed I was still cooking the Conventional way. This cookbook not only has good recipes, but great guidlines so I can start to make my own favorite recipes in the convection oven.

The Best Convection Oven Cookbook.......2007-07-03
I was thrilled with this book. Not only did it give me useful information about convection ovens in general, but it had many recipes that I have highlighted and will try. Until I received the book, and even after reading the manufacturer's book, I was unaware of all the convection oven could do. I am anxious to get to work and get cooking.
Still Questioning.......2007-05-12
We recently purchased a Kitchenaid double convection oven and microwave/convection oven. Since this is a new way of cooking for me, I wanted a cookbook that would give me knowledge as to HOW to use the ovens, especially the convection oven. Received the cookbook, and while it has recipes, it does not help in learning how to operate my new ovens. I'm learning by trial and error.
Convection Oven.......2007-05-12
Most of the recipes in this book are too fancy for my use and taste.
Ok book for convection oven use.......2006-11-10
I did not find this book to be as thorough as the Ojakangas book but still has some good recipes....
Instruction manual NOT!.......2005-02-04
If you're looking for a guide to using your appliance, you're likely best to contact the appliance's manufacturer and get the proper user's manual for it. They don't all operate the same.
If however you're looking for recipes of dishes to cook in your convection oven or how to cook them (temperatures, cooking time, etc.) this book may be good for you. It may also be helpful in giving you an idea of what kinds of adjustments are required to convert existing recipes for use in your convection oven.
Bon Appetite!

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book! Great for beginners like me........2007-05-18
I'm surprised at the number of negative reviews about this book. First, let me say that I was never a baker. I was terrified of it because nothing ever came out right. I cook a lot but never baked. I picked up Ms. Eckhardt's book because even though the cumulative ratings were low (3.5), I use another cookbook of hers ("The High-Protein Cookbook) that's just excellent. Boy, was I in luck! The baking recipes are wonderful. So far, I've baked 4 cakes and they've all turned out wonderfully. I baked the chocolate orange passion cake for my birthday party (lots of oohs and aahs from guests), and plan on baking the coconut cake for a party I'm attending this Friday. I don't worry any more about being a bad baker because you can't go wrong if you follow her instructions.
I've become so addicted to baking now that I do it about twice a week! Go on. Get the book. You won't regret it! :-)
P.S.: Investing in an oven thermometer may be necessary. I bought one after my first cake took longer than it should have to bake. Turned out that my oven wasn't really heating up to the temperature it claimed to be.
Somewhat disappointed........2007-04-26
I first picked up this book in a store and was intrigued by what I read. It sounded like Linda West Eckhardt had come up with a foolproof way to make the perfect cake. I was especially excited about the cakes coming out level. She claims her method will bake a cake that is perfectly level with no dome on top where it has risen in the middle. She states that "layers are disk-like as Frisbees." So, I decided to check this book out from the library to give it a test run before buying it.
Well, I bake cakes often and like always, I followed the directions to a T for her Clasic Yellow Cake. I used the commercial-grade aluminum pans she recommends and made certain my oven was set to exactly 400 degrees -- I even used an oven thermometer to assure it was really at 400 as she stresses the importance of this temperature. I then carefully followed her extremely specific mixing instructions.
So, imagine my dismay when I pulled my cake layers out of the oven 15 minutes later and saw that not only had my cakes risen in the middle, but they had risen a lot! I had big domes in the middle of each cake. Now, it is definitely possible I made a mistake, but I felt that I followed the directions with a meticulous attention to detail.
The reason I've rated this 3 stars is that even though I was disappointed that the cakes did not come out the way the author claimed, there was basically nothing wrong with them. They looked like your average cake and tasted pretty good as well (though nothing out of the ordinary.)
This book is also pretty to look through with some lovely photographs. The directions are clear and easy to follow.
Good tips on Cake from Scratch.......2006-11-10
The book shows ways to make baking from scratch simpler and faster. The recipes are good but not all that I had hoped.
Many Recipes.......2006-11-06
I have not had time yet to try these recipes, but there is such a large variety of wonderful cakes to make.
Fantastic results!.......2006-08-15
I have to agree with the "half the time" issue another reviewer raised - I don't think there was anything much about shortcuts or time-savers in this book, really. But, the recipes are fantastic! The cakes I've made from here have all been perfectly moist and airy - definitely the best cakes I've ever made.
One thing I really liked about this book, too, is the amount of variation in cake bases themselves. This isn't a book with a couple recipes for layer cakes, a couple jelly rolls, some ideas for putting together sponge cakes... it's just a bunch of variations on the standard, familiar butter cake. This means Eckhardt isn't repeating recipes that I already have on my shelves anyway, and that was really nice.
All in all, highly recommended!
Customer Reviews:
Not worth buying.......2004-12-15
I was more interested in technique and tips for cooking with my new convection oven and this was a poor resource The recipes are ordinary. Personally, I wouldn't have bought it had I known how mediocre this book was.
Convection Oven Cooking.......2003-09-13
Not enough basic recipes and not enough information. I returned this title, it just didn't appeal to me. If you want some more intricate recipes and some great basic convection oven info - try "The Best Convection Oven Cookbook". Personally, I'd like to see some one write a book with roasting times, chocolate chip cookie recipes and more of the basics.
A beginers guide.......2001-11-01
A beginers guide to convection ovens. Some very basic receipts for everyday meals, but does not have receipts one might use when entertaining guests.
Product Description
Convection Oven Cookery is a perennial nitty gritty® favorite. Convection ovens continue to be extremely popular because they cook food more rapidly, brown more evenly, and use less energy than conventional ovens.
This title shows the advantages and variety of convection ovens, as well as more than 100 easy-to-follow recipes, including breads, meats, side dishes and desserts.
Customer Reviews:
Hard to follow.......2001-07-23
I was hoping for more "general" information about the convection oven. Plus, I am a firm believer in PICTURES! Pictures help make recipes easier to follow. I also expected more common dishes, some of the ingredients are rather hard (and expensive) to come by.
