"Makeup should be fun, not fascist," celebrity makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin avers in Face Forward, his third book. One of the most adored stylists among fashionistas, entertainment divas, and high-society jet setters, Southern-born Aucoin arrived on the New York fashion scene in the early '80s, a period he ridicules for its '50s-era conservatism and McCarthyist us-against-them values. His career since has been motivated by the feel-good ideals of acceptance, diversity, and self-love, and the vain world of beauty has eagerly participated in his vision. While one may puzzle on how it is he finds fulfillment in an industry known for its superficiality and elitism, Aucoin's words are nonetheless infectious and the touches of his brushes inspired.
Conceived as an exploration of the past, present, and future of beauty, Face Forward is an ingenious showcase of the transformative, creative possibilities of makeup, with portraits of everyone from Julia Roberts to Sharon Stone, Martha Stewart to his mother, Thelma. His crafted visages range from minimal-application makeovers of friends to elaborate re-creations of such Hollywood icons as Audrey Hepburn (Calista Flockhart), James Dean (Gwyneth Paltrow), and Veronica Lake (shockingly, Martha Stewart) and such pop-culture personalities as Cher (socialite Alexandra von Furstenberg) and Siouxsie Sioux (Winona Ryder). The final pages present his ideas for looks to come, such as "Explorer," Mary J. Blige covered in eggplant body makeup with a rainbow of metallic eye shadows over her eyes and thickly glossed red lips; "Floralia," a freckled Lucy Liu resembling a sprite from A Midsummer's Night Dream; and "Venusian de Milo," Sharon Stone as an orange-haired, one-breast-baring sci-fi femme fatale. Throughout, Aucoin augments an already colorful book with step-by-step instruction, chatty commentary on each look and model, and riffs on such topics as friendship, politics (he repeatedly applauds the Clinton Administration for embracing diversity in the '90s), and the environment.
"Appreciating (even highlighting) individuality is one of the great things about makeup," asserts Aucoin, and Face Forward is a dazzling testament to that belief. For those who see the fun of makeup and are eager to experiment with the virtually unlimited possibilities of it, this book is a boon. --Rebecca Wright

Book Description
How technology is revolutionising service and humanising the face of business In Best Face Forward, Jeffrey F. Rayport and Bernard J. Jaworski argue that as this “front-office automation” revolution unfolds, competitive advantage will increasingly depend on deploying the right mix of interfaces with customers—human, automated, and hybrids of both—to surpass current levels of performance and service. Based on extensive research inside both start-up and established businesses, Best Face Forward proposes guiding principles and a practical auditing tool for determining how humans and machines can best collaborate in mediating critical customer interactions.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Treatment of an Important Issue.......2005-04-21
Rayport and Jaworski make a strong case for an integrated approach to managing customer touchpoints. They identify unique capabilities and costs of people and machines, and then go on to lay out a purposive and logical approach for combining people and machines in order to deliver a solid customer experience at a cost that does not break the bank. The book contains a large variety of interesting ideas and examples, and is worth reading just for them. I would have liked the authors to have gone further in terms of pulling together their many ideas and providing more detail regarding the 5 A's approach-how to think about each element in a variety of settings. All things considered, it is a very useful book for anyone interested in engineering customer touchpoints to gain competitive advantage through customer experience.
Valuable insights into the customer experience.......2005-04-09
This book is valuable not only for the examples and points the authors make, but also for the way it triggers ideas about one's own organization. Working through just the first step of the authors' model presented in the last part of the book is eye-opening with respect to your customers' experience of the business. There are great insights here on how to think about what your interface systems are demanding from customers and employees and how you can go about transforming a poorly integrated set of interfaces into a coherent, integrated system that satisfies your various customer segments. I recommend the book to people interested in marketing and also technology people involved in designing customer interfaces.
Very interesting book on importance of interfaces.......2005-03-08
This is a very interesting book. I saw it in the bookstore and the title captured my attention. I am glad I bought it. The examples are fascinating and comprehensive, the amount of facts and information is very good, and the explanation of why it is critical for companies to think about their interface systems is compelling. Best Face Forward not only supports the argument of why creating a differentiated experience for the customers is important, but in the last chapter it provides a good framework to help business managers diagnose and assess the ability of their company's interface system to create competitive advantage. I recommended my friends to read it.
Useful and interesting guide to managing "interfaces".......2005-02-25
When a colleague recommended this book to me, I initially hesitated to read it because I didn't think there could be much new to say on the topic. I was wrong. Not only do the authors give a wealth of really interesting examples, they have some important ideas as well. It's a sign of a thoughtful book when it presents something that you've seen or experienced your whole life and makes you think about it in a different way. Granted, the first few chapters of the book are interesting but not obviously relevant as a how-to guideline (more like reading an article by Malcolm Gladwell, author of Tipping Point, or some other observer of human phenomena). But the later chapters become much more practical. For example, the description of how to identify and then satisfy a customer segment that prefers machine interactions over human interactions was useful for my work. Particularly useful was the section on maintaining brand identity in light of the proliferation of customer technology (or technology "interfaces" as the book would say). In all, I would recommend this (and have recommended it) to anyone who is interested in marketing and customer experience.
A Must-Read for a New Kind of Competitive Advantage.......2005-02-04
I found this book compelling and actionable. The stories - which are drawn from a wide range of examples and not just the usual suspects that seem to appear in every book these days - were on target, covered a variety of industries, and were fun to read. I especially liked the frameworks for taking a look at the business and figuring out what to do next. These frameworks move beyond understanding customers to understanding customer experience - an important new dimension. The authors clearly know both the practical and the academic dimensions of the topic, and the bibliography is helpful in pointing to other places to look for deeper dives into the material. This is one of those rare books you can enjoy and learn from at the same time.

Interesting start to finish.......2003-01-23
This is not at all the vanity autobiography you might expect. It's a well-written, complete and detailed first-person saga of a girl who came from next to nothing to build a major cosmetics empire, become a television celebrity and make international civic and social contributions of great importance. The book is just like having Marilyn Miglin to yourself for a cozy afternoon; it's just like she's talking to you. Her life is engaging from the start--she's been a dancer, one of Chicago's leading high fashion models, a cosmetics empress and also a daughter, wife and mother-- and she tells about it all with grace and warmth. The most astounding part of the book is her recounting the loss of her handsome and charismatic husband Lee, one of Chicago's business and civic stars. She tells exactly what came before, what happened, what was going on outside and inside of her, how she survived and went on. There's no doubt this is a valiant woman whose price is far above rubies! The key to this book is a photo of Marilyn at the age of 4, already a wide-eyed European-featured beauty, clear-eyed, shining from inside and dressed like a fairy princess. This clearly is someone who already had her lights on bright as a kid. The photos are all interesting, if only because Miglin is such a unique beauty. She isn't a standard issue American blonde but has very strong ethnic features which somehow come together into a face which is ever fascinating, ever mystifying. Whatever IT is, she has it, plus terrific business talent, great people skills and a deep, deep sense of social service and justice. If you don't believe it, she and Lee sent their kids to the Chicago Public Schools when they could have afforded the best private academies. They wanted their children to know a spectrum of people. Miglin continues to serve their elementary school in many ways. Chicagoans adore Marilyn Miglin for her elegance, her always being herself, her warmth, her generosity and above all her courage. No, you won't find gossip here, you won't find insults of other people, no won't find private family matters which should remain private family matters (her daughter and son will never be embarrassed by this book). You will find a classy and rewarding story by one singular sensation.
THE MAGIC OF MARILYN MIGLIN.......2001-11-04
THIS BOOK IS A BEAUTIFUL STORY OF HOW MARILYN MIGLIN MADE
IT IN THE WORLD OF COSMETICS. IT'S AN EASY READ AND FUN TO
LEARN ABOUT THIS VERY AMBITIOUS LADY. SHE IS, HOWEVER, VERY
GUARDED ABOUT WHAT IS REVEALED IN HER LIFE STORY. THIS IS
FOR SURE, NOT A TELL ALL BOOK.

Some years ago, an incident on a San Francisco street made Julian C. R. Okwu realize that there were white people who saw him not as a man, but as a black man who was a potential source of trouble because of the color of his skin. "I wanted to introduce the world to another idea of young African American men," he writes in his introduction, explaining the reason for this powerful and important book. In Face Forward, he presents photographs and brief autobiographies, in their own words, of 40 young black men. They are a varied lot--a former gang member, a dancer, a medical student, a politician, businessmen, and activists. What they have in common, though, is a desire to give back to the black community, and to be seen for who they are.
Book Description
Bargain Books are non-returnable.
Defying the statistics, destroying the stereotypes, this inspiring collection of portraits trumpets the achievements of thirty-nine young black men. This handsome volume combines luminous photographs with intimate interviews of young men leading exemplary lives. Photographer Julian Okwu traveled across the country interviewing teachers and entrepreneurs, lobbyists and poets, ministers and politicians. He found a diverse range of voices, experiences, and attitudes, but all of the men he met shared a concern for the African American male and a hope that future generations would benefit from their work. In a world of negative images, skewed statistics, and racial division, these young men embody an alternative reality and an eloquent argument for optimism. A powerful, timely social document.

Nice pictures and stories of triumph.......2007-10-04
This is a great book for young black males. It has short biographys of several different black males who made it in spite of their challenges in life. It was positive.
Not Just for the Coffeetable.......2002-07-24
Now, here's something we don't get everyday: a handsomely-presented portrait of several young Black men whose backgrounds vary in profession, background, region, and sexual orientation. We're treated to crisp, black-and-white photographs of these men accompanied by a few autobiographical notes. The stories they have to tell never fail to intrigue. I bought this on a whim a few years back, and it's been a nice addition to my library. Definitely recommended.
great.......2000-06-12
this book prove that all young black guys aren't how the media try to make them out to be.
A Great Gift!.......2000-01-06
The personal narratives and excellent photography make this book the perfect gift for any young African American. It is truly inspiring to read the words of the next generation and learn how they are coping with success in spite of the racism and negativity that is so prevalent in the 21st century. It is a perfect companion to AS I AM. The only draw back is that Mr. Okwu didn't provide contact information for these talented, handsome young men.M-E-O-W!
Illuminating!.......1998-02-07
In a time and age when young, african-american men are not portrayed in the best light, J. Okwu provides an illuminating and insightful look into the lives of 40 of these men. Not only is his writing superb, but his artistic eye and layout design are quite impressive. I have passed along the book to a number of young, african-american men in my life. I hope Face Forward will inspire them as much as it did me.

Book Description
At the close of the Revolutionary War, more than 3,000 black Loyalists, many liberated from slavery by enlisting in the British army, made exodus in 1783 from New York to Nova Scotia in search of land and freedom. Almost half of the emigrants settled an independent black community at Birchtown, Nova Scotia, where, despite extraordinarily harsh conditions, they established their own churches and schools, and cultivated a shared sense of themselves as a chosen people. A majority of the population emigrated once again in 1791, this time setting sail for Sierra Leone to fulfill what they perceived to be their prophetic destiny. This circuit of gathering, exodus, and diaspora was grounded in a unique black Atlantic theology focused on redemption and Zion that was conceptualized and shaped by the charismatic black evangelists of diverse Protestant faiths who converged in the Nova Scotia settlements.
"Face Zion Forward" now brings together the remarkable writings of these early authors of the black Atlantic. This collection of memoirs, sermons, and speeches, many of which are based on the Birchtown experience, documents how John Marrant, David George, Boston King, and Prince Hall envisioned the role of Africa and African American communities in black liberation. The volume demonstrates that these men were both collaborators and contestants in the construction of modern post-slavery black identities, and shows how the frameworks of Christian theology and Freemasonry influenced ideas about emancipation and communal independence. The centerpiece of the work is The Journal of John Marrant, published here in its entirety for the first time since 1790. Marrant's missionary diary not only illuminates the intricacies of eighteenth-century African American Christianity, but also presents a richly detailed account of everyday life in Birchtown.
"Face Zion Forward" provides an informed reconstruction of the major ideological and theological conversations that occurred among North American blacks after the American Revolution and illustrates the disparate and complex underpinnings of the modern black Atlantic. In addition, the work presents invaluable insights into African American literary traditions and the development of Ethiopianist and black nationalist discourses.

Good cookbook for the NW.......2007-05-17
I have enjoyed the meals I have made from this book. Lots of good Salmon ideas and the grilled mushroom salsa over Chicken is fab! The receipes are clear and easy to follow. Most of the ingredients are easy to find which makes trying new ones so easy. The only small negative is more photos of the finished foods could be added--there is a fair amount but I always think the more the better in a cookbook.
Great recipes and tips!.......2006-07-31
I love this cookbook! Originally from the PNW, I now live in Europe, and I was attracted to this cookbook because of the promise of flavors and artwork from "home". I haven't been disappointed.
The recipes are easy to follow, the ingredients lists are complete, and my dishes have turned out every time. Moreover, I'm especially impressed by the tips for cooking and suggestions for pairing of wines. I'm only a novice cook, and I have learned a lot about how to become a better cook in the year since I purchased this book.
Many recipes require a lot of time to prepare -- counting buying fresh ingredients and actual food preparation. Since I don't always have a lot of time after getting home from work, I usually use this cookbook to prepare a nice meal on the weekend.
Very appealing photographs which tempt me to make the dish accompany many recipes. Too bad every recipe doesn't have a photo.
All-in-all, I love this cookbook -- for the yummy food, the things I'm learning about cooking, and the reminder of home.
One of the best cookbooks ever.......2006-07-06
I LOVE this cookbook. I have made over a dozen recipies from it and all of them have been exceptional. The chicken recipies are creative, delicious and crowd pleasers. I have made several recipies over and over again. I have a kitchen full of cookbooks and this is the one I grab first.
Easy to follow -- and creative.......2006-03-15
I purchased this cookbook after seeing it at a friend's house in the Seattle area. As a somewhat-novice cook, I found numerous recipes that I could handle. I've attempted at least a half-dozen dishes in this book and have been very pleased with the results every time. This book offers some great ideas for meals you can make for entertaining -- and offers some great flavor from a different part of the country from where I live. It's a great book that I keep coming back to.
One Of My Favorite Junior League Cookbooks.......2005-12-02
I've tried virtually every Junior League Cookbook from the West Coast and this ranks up there with the best. It's fresh, simple and of the three recipes I've made they are all "keepers". My friends all endorse the book too as they are on the receiving end of my cooking. Look forward to making more dishes from this great cookbook in the weeks to come.
