"The Greeks and Romans knew about diabetes. Fortunately, the way they tested for the condition--by tasting the urine--has gone by the wayside." Diabetes for Dummies has the friendly, quirky style you expect from all the For Dummies books, but this is no skim-the-surface Diabetes 101. Rubin has packed this book with useful information, peppered with warm advice for enjoying your life while living with diabetes. One of his points is that although you'd rather not have this disease, you're lucky to have it now instead of a few decades ago, because today you can manage diabetes and live a productive, quality-filled life.
The book is divided into sections on "Dealing with the Onset of Diabetes," "How Diabetes Affects Your Body," "Managing Diabetes: The 'Thriving with Diabetes' Lifestyle Plan," and "Special Considerations for Living with Diabetes." Each chapter is packed with facts and strategies on topics such as monitoring, battling complications, medications, diet, and exercise. If you skim, it's an introduction to diabetes; if you read it carefully, it's a textbook. Web surfers will appreciate the "Dr. W.W. Web" appendix, where Rubin lists many useful diabetes Web sites. (If you'd rather click than type, you can visit Rubin's Web site, where he offers links to all the diabetes sites.) Also included is a mini-cookbook of multiethnic recipes from noted restaurants, mostly in San Francisco (with the restaurant address, in case you want to order instead of cook). --Joan Price

Good book but incomplete.......2007-07-22
This book is very basic. I think it deals with the subject topic very well and it addresses the most basic components of the disease. I think another book that also addresses these issues with the exercise component explored in-depth. I would buy both, because a failure to come up with a practical plan for keeping your weight down means that these books are worthless. Suffers of this disease need every advantage, and dealing with the obesity issue is key.

Fantastic.......2007-06-27
Husband didn't have a clue when he got diagnosed. Learned quite a bit with this book before going to a nutritionist. Would highly recommend for newly diagnosed persons, especially with no access to a nutritionist.

If you or a family member has diabetes, food preparation may seem like a chore or a deprivation. What can you cook that tastes good and fits the diabetes guidelines? The authors of Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies, diabetes expert Alan Rubin (who also wrote Diabetes for Dummies) and registered dietician Fran Stach, have come up with dishes that will please not just the person with diabetes but the whole family. The diabetes diet is healthy for all of us, and if we can make it taste good, we all benefit.
That's where this book shines. The 112 recipes are as creative and tasty as they are healthy, yet most take a half hour or less of preparation (plus cooking time). Recipes include Soy Waffles, Crispy Corn French Toast, Portobello Paté, Carrot Soup with Leek and Blood Orange, Mango Tortilla Salad, Oriental Beef and Noodle Salad, and Spaghetti Squash with Fresh Basil, plus a variety of fish, meat, and poultry entrées. Some of the recipes were created by chef Denise Sharf; others were contributed by gourmet restaurants. All recipes include nutritional information: calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, fiber, sodium, and exchanges.
Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies is more than a compilation of recipes. The book also gives guidelines for "what, when, and how much" to eat, including tips for visualizing portions (an ounce of meat is the size of a matchbox; an ounce of cheese is the size of a domino; a medium potato is the size of a computer mouse). You'll get shopping and cooking tips and illustrated food-preparation steps to help novice cooks.
Like the whole For Dummies line, the style is simple, friendly, clever, and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny, such as, "Don't go to a paint store and expect to get thinner there." -- Joan Price

Customer Reviews:
A good start.......2007-07-18
i bought this book a couple of years ago, because my partner is diabetic and i wanted to know how to cook for her. the recipes in here are all good, and sound delicious, but most are too involved to be practical for everyday cooking. more helpful would have been how to make regular foods diabetic-friendly. there are some good chapters explaining diabetes and carbs and all that, but the actual cookbook part could use some work.
Very good.......2007-06-27
Unfortunately, my husband is a very picky eater and didn't care for many of the recipes but I enjoyed them (him being the diabetic). Very good information in this book.
My girlfriend who I gave it to loves it!!.......2007-03-09
Gave as gift to someone who just got diagnosed with the possibility of getting diabetes. But now I want my own copy. Just to be informed.
Very Misleading Book.......2007-02-22
This book didn't give enough information, and it was very misleading.
Look for Dr. McDougall's books on Amazon. Or, if you google Dr. McDougall, you can go to his website and see what he has to say about diabetes. Numerous studies show about 75 percent of type 2 diabetes is completely curable - within 10 days - by changing your diet. Period. You can come off all medication and insulin. He gives the information you need, completely free, on his website. Use his method, and you'll soon see your blood sugars return to normal . . . but then the various companies that make a fortune off diabetes will suffer.
Another thing about this dummies book: It's chock-full of ads. The author heavily peppers his writing with all sorts of product endorsements and gets kickbacks for them.
You might want to read Dr. Neal Barnard's Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes Without Drugs before you jump to conclusions. He is president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (a nonprofit organization with a lot of highly respected members.) He has a lot of respectable physicians endorsing his work. I encourage anyone reading this to search for his book on Amazon. You'll find it doesn't have any ads and no kickbacks from the big drug companies like the "Dummies" books.
A helpful gift.......2007-01-09
I made this purchase as gifts for people with Type 2 diabetes.

Customer Reviews:
Great Product and Excellent Service.......2007-05-14
This was a high quality product that arrived just as promised. Great shape for used and very prompt. Highly recommended seller!
Repeated information.......2007-03-18
I ended up selling the book; the information was duplicate of what I already had.
Learning to Live w/ Hypo.......2006-09-14
If any of you were the same as me you learned out that you had hypo and the doctor said it's a lot like diabetes so go get a diabetes book and follow the diet. I think the medical field is ill informed about hypo and could take a good lesson from this book. Hypo is a complicated disorder and until you know a lot about it it is hard to control. Hypo for Dummies gives you that knowledge you need. Keep in mind that the writers are practicing eastern medicine physicians, so some things they offer a regular physician of western medicine might not.
This book is a great place to start with though and it gives you the information you need to get started and to possibly follow up with a doctor knowledgable in hypo. I definately recommend the book!
Hypoglycemia Information From A Non-Diabetic Perspective.......2006-08-21
After much searching for a book that would focus in on hypoglycemia, I found Chow & Chow's book. Normally, I'm not big on the dummies series however, this particular book covers a wide range of information from diagnosis (and confirmation that you're not crazy) to helpful ways to "help" yourself combat the ups and downs of the rollercoaster ride.
Typically, books on hypoglycemia are written from the perspective of diabetes or "how-to" weight loss. This book focuses in on the condition without passing judgement on any other condition that you may or may not have.
Highly Recommended Sections:
Part 1 - Addressing Your Ups and Downs - Could This Be Hypoglycemia?
Part 3 - Getting Off Your Bleached-Flour Buns and Treating the Problem
Part 5 - Spinning a Network of Support for Yourself
Great beginner book!.......2006-01-04
I read this book as a refresher and cannot imagine a more in-depth explanation of hypoglycemia and how to deal with it--emotionally and physically for beginners.
It does a great job of describing hypo and discussing the condition with friends and family. In addition, it helps explain what you should eat and when is the best time to do so. The only drawback I found was that the recipes included some of the things they say you should stay away from. However, after eating healthy and regularly, you will find that you can eat some of those things and not feel the effects. At the end of the day, you need to listen to your body and use the book as a tool.
Finally, I would also recommend reading Body for Life by Bill Phillips. His diet is something that hypo can and should use. He delves into the many different types of proteins and carbohydrates. He also has a Body for Life cookbook that I use 3-4 times per week. His cookbook offers easy to make recipes that would surpise you to find the meals so nutritionally sound.

Book Description
This beautiful two-color journal presents all wine lovers, from the novice to the expert, with an easy way to make wine drinking more rewarding and enjoyable.
Customer Reviews:
its good, but not perfect.......2006-04-28
Got this for my birthday. So far I like it but there are a few things I dont.
First let me say that the beginning of the book consists of information on tasting, smelling, reading labels etc.. It is only mildly helpful information.
The book is then divided into reds, whites, and sparkling wines. For me, it is difficult to find the section I want. The sections are not clearly marked throughout each section. I end up flipping through the book searching to find if I am in the whites or reds section. I wish they had color coded the edges of the pages, or even just noted what section you are in at the top of each page..something like that.
What is included on each page I think is just the right amount of information. The type of wine, winery, vintage, origin. Space for descriptions of the aroma/bouqet, color, flavor, and overall impression. There is also space for the date, price you paid, where you drank it, and whome you shared it with. It is true there is no room for wine labels, but I don't think it was meant for that, it is a smaller book, meant to be able to take to restraunts etc..
I agree with the previous reviewer, for a travel wine log, the size is a little awkward as it is just about too big to fit in my pocket comfortably. Usually my wife must put it in her purse. Overall I am happy. I think this is an excellent wine log for those who enjoy wine and have an interest in keeping track of the wines they have tasted. Probably is not detailed enough for the serious wine enthusiast. And as I said, the size is borderline too big for pocket travel. But I am keeping it and using it and enjoying it
not really.......2005-10-28
This journal is weird, it is too big to be a travel one but too small to be a good home journal. No place to paste wine labels, hard to keep open because of the narrowness of it, has white and red pages so you don't decide, and it has too much useless info inside. I did not like i returned it and kept a small one and a big one separately.
Good wine journal.......2003-07-07
This wine journal is hardcover but fairly compact in size, so you could bring it with you in a purse to a restaurant or wine store. The descriptions of wine are clear and informative. The categories that you complete are relevant, and there's space for you to write in your own additional comments.
Well Organized, Great Insights.......2000-12-14
This is my favorite Wine Log. It is organized by wine type, which allows me to readily find the wine at a later date. The data requested for each wine seems very relavent to me. Lastely, the glossary in the back is very helpful in descriptive adjectives about the taste/look (etc.) of wines.
A great book!
