Book Description

If you have questions or concerns about your child’s social, emotional, or behavioral development, you’re not alone. The number of children affected by autism—an umbrella term for a wide spectrum of disorders that includes “classic” autism, Asperger's syndrome, and Rett syndrome—is growing every year. Most children are not diagnosed until they start school. But developmental problems can be recognized in infants as young as four months old. Early intervention can vastly improve a child’s chances for a successful outcome and recovery. Could It Be Autism? provides vital information so you can recognize the red flags of developmental delays and begin treatment based on those first signs.

Nancy Wiseman is the founder and president of First Signs, the organization dedicated to educating parents, clinicians, and physicians on the early identification of and intervention for developmental delays. She is also the mother of a child who was diagnosed with autism at the age of two, and she draws on her own experiences as well as the latest research to present real strategies. Emphasizing warning signs, she describes the most important milestones at each stage of a child’s growth, including things parents and pediatricians often overlook. She also empowers parents to act on their instincts and initial concern, rather than to “wait and see,” which is often encouraged.

The book explains the steps parents can take to confirm or rule out a developmental delay or disorder. It details various diagnoses and show how sometimes multiple diagnoses may apply. But even more valuable is the information on how to design and implement the best intervention plan based on a child’s unique developmental profile. Different treatments and therapies are outlined so parents can explore and understand what may work best for their child, based on his or her particular strengths and weaknesses.

Ultimately, Could It Be Autism? is about giving parents hope--hope that they can know one way or the other where their child is developmentally and hope that they can give their child what he or she needs to have the best life possible.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read .......2007-01-24

Recently my son was diagnosed with PDD NOS. In the search for answers I started to educate myself by buying some books on Autism in addition to seeking out other parents/professionals who were knowledgeable about this diagnosis. Could It Be Autism is an excellent resource to read if you are a parent who questions if your son/daughter may have a diagnosis that falls on the autism spectrum. It is comprehensive in terms of offering suggestions on how to set up a treatment team for your child. It also covers the need for you to become your child's greatest advocate, how to do this, and why it is critial in terms of getting him/her the help needed. This book is more than an intellectual exercise like so many written are. It is easy to read, offers hands on practical things that you as a parent can do to help your child, and it is written from the authors heart. In it she shares a piece of her story in terms of her own child's disabilities. This book is realisic and at the same time shows you that there is hope for all children on the Autism Spectrum to do better given the right treatment program be put into place. This author walks you through the steps. Reading her book added hope back into what felt like my world of darkness and despair discovering my son's diagnosis. It also empowered me as a parent with practical steps I could take to help him get the help he needs even in the midst of still going through the grieving process. This author has a great deal of insight and valueable feedback to offer other parents who have children diagnosed on the autism spectrum. She has walked in our shoes through her daughers diagnoses and how it has changed her life too. You get the sense that she cares for the parents and children out there who are experiencing the same trials and issues. I have found there are other good books to be found on the topic of Autism. There are also very bad ones to avoid. No book can cover every topic or concern a parent may have. However, this book is A MUST READ in that it lays out the foundation and map you will need to help get on the right track in terms of helping your child recover. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The best book to read if you are wondering if your child has autism.......2007-01-20

My granddaughter, now 20 months old, was found to have speech delay two months ago. While researching speech delay causes and treatment I became concerned that she might have autism spectrum disorder. My wife, daughter ,and even the speech therapist all believe that I am overly concerned. I truly hope that they are right and I am wrong, but after reading this book, I know that my granddaughter urgently needs a thorough developmental evaluation so that early intervention, if needed, can be started as soon as possible. If you have concerns that a child of yours or in your family is showing some of the signs of developmental delay, please don't just wait and hope for a change to occur.Instead, BUY THIS BOOK NOW BACAUSE IT IS THE BEST PLACE TO START. As stated in the preface, not all theories of etiology or treatment are discussed. It isn't titled "The encyclopedia of autism"It is, however,a SUPERB "Parent's Guide to the First Signs and Next Steps"for those wondering if their child is showing signs that might indicate autism.

5 out of 5 stars Our family thanks you!.......2006-09-01

As a mother of four children, I have learned to trust my gut feeling. Do not listen to what others tell you, but trust yourself. I always thought my children were different. They had certain characteristics that I did not see in other children their age. But even though I knew that something was not quite right, I did not research further until my pediatrician mentioned the word autism. He said that my 15 month old son was showing some "red flags" for autism. To me, that was such a scary word, a word I knew nothing about. I pictured my son growing up in his own world, sitting in a corner by himself, banging his head against a wall. That is what I thought Autism was. It was not until I read this book that everything changed.

Not only did this book make me realize that my kids did show red flags for autism, but it helped me to accept that something was not quite right with them, and that getting a diagnosis would not be the end, but a beginnning. When you know what you are dealing with, you know how to get help. This book gave me the push I needed to seek screening for my children, and thank you Nancy, because my children needed this. 3 of my 4 children have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, and your book helped us not only recognize the signs, but to accept the diagnosis, and lead us on the path of what to do next.

If you have concerns about a childs development, then this is the book for you. Not only does it cover autism, but it touches on other developmental disabilities as well. The book is well written and very easy to read. It is not filled with a bunch of hard to understand medical jargon. It is clear, concise, to the point, but most of all informative. Thank you Nancy Wiseman!

3 out of 5 stars A good place to start for a young child.......2006-08-03

Could it be Autism? is the only book on Autism that I have found that has addressed the signs in the early years. It is a good place to start if you have concerns about your child, however if you still have concerns after reading the book then I would deffinatly look at more comprehensive books such as the OASIS guide. As someone says she left out a lot of other good options such as OT and the gf/cf diet. It is also seemed to be geared towards the lower functioning end of Autism and does almost nothing to address those children who are on the higher functioning end of Autism.

5 out of 5 stars You helped me.......2006-07-09

The book is exactly what parents should read. If you are concerned about your child, this book will help you identify if it is autism. If you want to know what signs to look for, this book is the one.

Book Description

Autism is a complex disability resulting in brain damage, immune dysfunction, self-destructive behavior patterns, and unresponsiveness to other people. It often strikes following an early childhood of apparently normal development. Many parents believe that childhood vaccines, especially MMR, are responsible. Some studies confirm that vaccines may cause autism in certain predisposed children. Health authorities, however, deny that autism is linked to vaccines. Some studies support their position. Congress recently held several hearings to investigate the causes of, and cures for, this growing epidemic. The testimony hints at a medical coverup. This book chronicles Congressional efforts to expose the truth, summarizes vaccine studies on both sides of the debate, and provides parents with crucial data to make informed decisions.

5 out of 5 stars Vaccines can trigger autism.......2005-05-20

My son became autistic at the age of 12 months immediately following the MMR vaccine. Vaccine-induced autism can be avoided simply by using vaccines that do not contain mercury, & by breaking up the vaccine load--give the M, then the M, then the R, not all at once. Remember, anything the disease can do to your child, the vaccine can do to your child. That said, there will be no outbreak of disease if the majority continues to be vaccinated. Just avoid vaccines if your child is immune deficient or if you have a family history of autism or other neurological disabilities. Bernard Rimland is the foremost expert on autism & savior of autistic children in the US. Ignore the ignorant first reviewer, & read everything of Rimland's that you can get your hands on.

4 out of 5 stars another rebuttal to the uninformed.......2004-05-12

Yes, genes can play a role in autism, but the exact causes of autism are yet unknown, and seem to be many. There's no reason parents should feel any guilt about having a child with autism because it is NOT their fault. The time of parent blaming should be long over, it's sad that it still exists at all. Even if genes were the sole cause of the disorder, do you really think parents should be blamed for this!? Try informing yourself about autism instead of bashing parents and authors that are trying to help these children. There seems to be a lot of supporting evidence for the vaccine/autism link.

5 out of 5 stars Rebuttal to the uninformed...who slammed this Book.......2003-08-26

What a refreshing thing to find! Unlike the other uninformed...who posted untruths, studies are starting to show a definite link between things in Vaccines causing autism... As far as those horrible childhood diseases coming back, are you insane?? We no longer vax for Smallpox (as it killed and mamed more than it helped) and it hasn't come back. There has not been a SINGLE CASE of wild polio in the WESTERN HEMISPHERE in 25 years. It hasn't come back.. Oh accept for those kids who GOT polio FROM the vaccine... OOOPS..
I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is ABOUT TIME that the drug companies STOP putting poisons into the vaccines that the GOVERNMENT mandates we inject into our children..
More parents need to research this before letting their newborns be injected with Goodness only knows what...

5 out of 5 stars Heartfelt and very real book on Aspergers.......2007-01-04

This book was brilliant in it's clearness right from the start on Aspergers and the way it manifests in people. Right from the beginning - I found myself going ... yes, that's my ex, and that, and that. Having someone else so clearly identify things was amazing. It is written from the perspective of someone who fell in love with someone with Aspergers and the things that happened. It helped me enormously understand 3 of my ex's who are on different levels with Aspergers. And 2 of whom I suspected. But my last one I was deeply baffled by for a long time until I had an inkling about Aspergers.

Like the writer of this book. I am also involved in psychology. But found it just baffling at times WHAT was actually going on. Things didn't fit together. I spent a long time puzzling over various things that just didn't gel on some level with my last man. 'One of these things does not go with the other'. A kind and caring man in many ways which yes, was one of the big attractions to him in the first place as others have also noted.

But when faced with me standing there with tears streaming down my cheeks. Told me to 'have a nice day'. In retrospect - I can see he knew he needed to say something 'nice' to make me feel better. So came up with a phrase that in his mind went with saying something nice. Totally inappropriate and yet funny in retrospect. But utterly unbelievable at the time it happened. Even when I said. I am standing here with tears streaming down my cheeks. Do you think I'm going to have a nice day? The confusion was very evident. It just didn't all go together for him. He'd been saying something he knew was 'nice'. Why didn't that work? Why did I have a problem with that?

This book I read cover to cover in one sitting. It covers so many things about Aspergers and from a non-clinical but still very informative viewpoint. I understood my whole relationship with my ex from start to finish with this book. It all just fell into place. A truly amazing book that is told with love I feel. Thank you.

3 out of 5 stars The Minority.......2006-01-29

Looking at other reviews I seem to be the only person who doesn't like this book very much. I think that is mostly because it just isn't the sort of story I enjoy or identify with, and that may be partly because I have AS myself... I don't know. I think a lot of people would enjoy this book though, particularly women who have experienced failed relationships with AS men and who would identify with the author and may find it reassuring that the break down of the relationship was about mutual incompatibility rather than any failing on their part. However, I wouldn't recommend this as the first or only book you read on Asperger's Syndrome. This is just one person's story told from a specific perspective. It's good for what it is but I feel uncomfortable with the idea of people forming opinions about someone like me based solely upon it.

5 out of 5 stars Cracking insights into a misunderstood world........2005-06-14

Like the book "Curious Incident", this text explores the nature of relationships with Asperger Syndrome "differently wired", people, as Jacobs describes them. In this book the relationship is real and the Authors own love affair with an erratic, loving, unfathomable and self destructive man.
It is written with eloquence and enormmous emotion and combines clinical information with an engaging and difficult story. This book should be essential clinical/psychological/psychiatric training material but it is also so much more than a reference text for unintiated clinicians. It is also a beautifully written and difficult story and while Jacobs tells you frankly of her pain it seems her ultimate task is to understand the lover who nearly destroyed her and himself and to raise our understanding of these castigated and misunderstood people. Excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent Life Here!.......2005-04-26

This is a brilliant work about being in an intimate relationship with a person who has Asperger's Syndrome (AS). AS is a neurobiological condition that affects sensory processing/integration and is on the autism spectrum. It also affects communication.

Many people on the a/A spectrum don't care for hugs and find them intrusive and just endure them to appease others. For many people with AS, hugs can be a sensory onslaught that can include an aversion for the feel of scratchy beards; perfume or body odor; the feel of the hugger's clothing and the feel of being enclosed in a seemingly "restrictive" fashion. Many children on the a/A spectrum dislike loud displays of affection. For neurotypical (NT) counterparts, the natural response when confronted with an adverse response to hugs is to draw the erroneous conclusion that people on the a/A spectrum are devoid of affection.

The book takes its title from the Beatle coiffed character Mr. Spock of "Star Trek" fame. The title character, Mr. Spock is clinical, analytical and seemingly devoid of emotion. Sadly, a misperception that people with AS lack emotion still exists. The term "Mr. Spock," when applied to persons on the a/A spectrum was humorous. People with AS often have a novel way of making assessments and that can be found in the following example. I knew a Beatle fan, a young boy with AS who said of Mr. Spock, "He has a Beatle haircut and so do I. He's like me because of that and because he can figure things out. I read that the guy who made Mr. Spock up likes the Beatles." I like his reasoning.

Since AS is a sensory condition, feeling is what underscores a/A (autism/Asperger's) behavior and responses. Meeting the needs of all involved, the NT and the person on the a/A spectrum can be found in this book. People on the spectrum have heightened sensory modes; sounds are amplified; odors are stronger; tastes are more pungent and tactile contact more intense. The "Mr. Spock" syndrome comes into play because for many people on the spectrum, regulating emotions and "decoding" the facial expressions and responses of others is difficult. "Coming even" after being bombarded with sensory stimuli often appears in a blunted affect which again reinforces the "Mr. Spock" syndrome.

Still, this is an excellent book for adults on the spectrum and for those directly involved with them. It brings to mind June Carter Cash's beautiful words of loving fairness, "I'll meet you halfway." We need more books like this.

2 out of 5 stars Much more about mother than about Fred.......2006-01-14

I am a mother of a child with special needs. I had just read "Smiling at Shadows" by Junee Waites and Helen Swinbourne. and was so impressed by the insight it offered that I looked forward to reading "My Son Fred". The two autistic boys, now grown up, appear to have been born at about the same time although one was born in the States and the other, Fred was born in Sweden and also had an intellectual disability.

The two books are very different. "Smiling at Shadows" was a far more positive book that gives great insight into why many ASD children behave as they do. The mother did not in any way understate her own pain and described her journey with great honesty, but we also learned a lot about her son's way of behaving and looking at the world.

"My son Fred" is also about a mother's journey but there is somehow not much about Fred except how he impacts on his mother. There is though a great deal about the mother's feelings throughout. She is searingly honest about these but it is only towards the end of the book, when her son is grown-up, that she begins to describe her son's viewpoint and why he possibly behaved in certain ways. I found her writing style quite irritating, with many words written in CAPITALS or with a Capital First Letter, and some of the language quite cringey. It is translated from Swedish but no doubt the Swedish version contains the same writing style.

Having said all this, it is still worth reading for the terrible way children with intellectual disabilities were regarded at that time. The mother was told by doctors and so-called friends to put him into a home and forget all about him and was condemned for not doing so. She was unsupported and her decision to keep him at home had an enormous and draining impact on her family, yet they all loved him as much as any parent loves their child - something others could not see. Had Fred been born today it is hoped that he would have received much more enlightened care and education and his parents would have been far better-supported.

There are many good things about this book. Had there been a better balance between the writer's feelings and her son's story(as we got in "Smiling at Shadows") and the writing style had been different, I'm sure I would have closed the book feeling enlightened rather than irritated.

5 out of 5 stars Great recipes -- beautiful illustrations -- delightful menus.......1999-07-10

Hope that this book is reprinted -- we've had it for years and use the recipes in it frequently. It's nice sometimes to be able to open a cookbook and get an entire menu with all the items complimentary. The lamb and papaya skewers are perhaps the best -- ALWAYS a hit at parties! The Christmas menu is also a good one.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious recipes and tasteful art found on every page!.......1999-06-05

This is such a nice cookbook. I have had it for years and years. Just reading through it makes me want to embrace all the lovely things that life has to offer and to give back as much as I can. By the way, Crabtree & Evelyn owners, I am so glad that one of your stores has recently opened near me. Thank you for the enduring quality of your products!

          5 out of 5 stars Great book........2007-01-09

Excellent book. I've had it a few weeks and tried about ten recipes and they've all been delicious. This is definately a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars More than just a holiday cookbook!.......2006-01-30

This is a GREAT book! It has many, many different and interesting recipes that are not the same-old, same-old holiday fare. The suggested menus and wine pairings make it simple and undaunting to throw together a small or large party. And I love that a lot of the recipes list make-ahead components. The recipes included in this book are ones you can enjoy all year round. Don't wait for a holiday to try them!

5 out of 5 stars Many Wonderful Recipes.......2005-11-20

This book has many different takes on traditional holiday food plus many unique recipes that one might not usually consider when preparing their holiday feast. There is even a section that includes ideas for edible holiday gifts. I am a subscriber to Cooking Light magazine and own many of their other books, and the recipes never dissapoint. Everything I have made has been delicious. There are so many good recipes I had trouble narrowing down what recipes to make for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

One of my favorite recipes from this book is the Marbled-Chocolate Banana Bread. I plan on using this book year-round.

5 out of 5 stars "Eat Smart, Be Fit, Live Well.".......2005-10-21

Lushly photographed and filled with stunning winter holiday recipes from breakfast and cocktail parties to the Big Events themselves, this cookbook features lighter versions of many old favorites and some great ideas for reducing the fat in your own recipes. Ingredient substitutions, decorating tips, make ahead meals, and even wine and food pairings are included, as the editors make the holidays a joyful time, foodwise, even for those on special diets. Clearly printed nutritional information appears with each recipe so that those on special diets, such as cardiac patients, can choose among the many selections.

Many appetizer recipes feature veggie-based dips and salsas--Tomato Crostini, Tex-Mex Black Bean Dip, and Warm Mushroom Spread all feature less than 1 g. of saturated fat per serving. "Creamy" dips use lower fat cream cheese to keep these appetizers at about 1 g. of fat per serving. One appetizer made with phyllo dough, usually a no-no for those on diets, uses butter-flavored cooking spray between the layers, instead of butter, to save fat and calories. Vietnamese spring rolls and Chicken/Lemon Pot-Stickers, use rice paper and won ton wrappers, lighter than pastry.

"Light" does not mean "dull" here. Pistachio-Crusted Rack of Lamb, Individual Beef Wellingtons (using phyllo sprayed with cooking spray, instead of puff pastry), or Ultimate Roasted Turkey, with gravy, are all on the menu. A wide assortment of side dishes--soufflés, Caramelized Onions, Potato-Gorgonzola Gratin, Pumpkin-Sage Polenta, and even Leek, Potato, and Caraway Latkes with Spiced Sour Cream--perk up the plate and the palate. The Salad section is outstanding, with unusual combinations of ingredients--Pear, Walnut, and Blue Cheese Salad with Cranberry Vinaigrette is a knockout. Fruit relishes, chutneys, salsas, and even candied cranberries are used as garnishes.

The editors have gone "all out" in the dessert section. The traditional pecan pie is here--regular pecan filling inside a lowfat, cookie-like crust--along with Vanilla or Pumpkin Cheesecake (made with 2 ½ pounds of reduced fat and non-fat cream cheese), gorgeous cakes made with less fat and fewer egg yolks, and pies with lowfat gingersnap, graham cracker, or vanilla wafer crusts. Over forty recipes are included for use as gifts--Apricot Amaretto Bread, Cranberry-Hazelnut Coffee Cake, Orange-Pistachio Baklava.

With over 500 tasty recipes offering a huge selection of elegant and even exotic recipes, this is a cookbook useful to everyone who is health-conscious, including vegetarians. Twenty pages of meatless main dishes and a vegetarian Hanukkah menu are included. A terrific compilation of healthier preparations for traditional holiday foods, this is a cookbook that has it all--and that will be used long past the holidays. n Mary Whipple
