Book Description

It's winter, and Wolf, Torak's beloved pack-brother, has been captured by an unknown foe. In a desperate bid to rescue him, Torak and Renn must brave the frozen wilderness of the Far North.

As they battle for survival amid howling blizzards and the ever-present menace of the great white bear, their friendship is tested to the breaking point, and Torak is forced to get closer to his enemies than ever before. . . .

Soul Eater is a haunting story of loyalty and loss, a chilling portrayal of the nature of evil, and the next step in the perilous journey that began with Wolf Brother and Spirit Walker.

5 out of 5 stars Chronicles of Ancient Darkness.......2007-07-09

I purchased this book for my son who is 13 years old and has never been interested in reading books. I homeschool my son and I purchased the first book in this series "Wolf Brother" for him to read for school. What a GREAT FIND! He loved the book and asked for the next two in the series. My daughter and I have read the series also. We can't wait for book #4 to come out. This series has very high energy, lots of action and it is an interesting read.

5 out of 5 stars In the great forests of ancient times, Torak and his friend, Renn, once again hunt........2007-06-05

In the great forests of ancient times, Torak and his friend, Renn, once again hunt. With them is the giant wolf dog who is never far from Torak's side. Everything seems normal to them until Torak comes across the feather of the fierce eagle owl, which is a bad omen. Though Torak throws it away, the hunt is spoiled when a giant eagle owl swoops from the tree tops and scares their prey away. Then, unexpectedly, Wolf darts away as if in pursuit of new prey. Though they try to follow, he easily out-distances them.

After some debate they decide to continue their hunt for Wolf and not go back to their Raven tribe. Little do they know what this decision will mean as they struggle deeper and deeper into uncharted, frozen lands. This is the beginning of the end for Torak and Renn.

In the meantime, Wolf has fallen into a trap set by the dreaded Soul Eaters; he has been beaten, drugged and caged. The Soul Eaters are in the process of gathering the fiercest animal hunters to sacrifice. It is the strength of these hunters that will help make the Soul Eaters the strongest tribe. They are power hungry, evil and reek of rotting flesh as they move forward with their evil plan.

Without the help of the White Fox Clan, Torak and Renn might have perished. When attacked by the winter bear, it is Fox Clan member Inuktiluk who helps them and takes them to the frozen river so they can attempt to cross into the dangerous unknown. But even in their worst dreams, they have no idea how horrible it will be when at last they find the beloved animal.

...The tip of Wolf's bushy silver tail was matted with dried blood: but it wasn't that which turned [Torak] ill with fear. It was the slimy greenish-black flesh which showed through in patches. Flesh which stank of rottenness.

"It's the blackening sickness," said Renn. "It's poisoning him. The worms of sickness are eating him up from inside."

Once again, Michelle Paver has created a magical world in which good and evil are constantly at war. Torak and Renn are more fully realized as their characters mature and endure harrowing experiences. Paver's writing is fluid and strong, capturing the language, landscape and personalities of this ancient time. Readers of the first two installments of the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series will be thrilled with this story --- probably the most powerful book yet.

I enjoyed Wolf Brother but hated Spirit Walker and I was weary that this entry in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series was going to be just as meandering and slow. Fortunately it's not and it's just as good as the first book.

Wolf is kidnapped by the evil Soul Eaters so Torak and Renn must chase after them into The Far North to rescue him. Their chase brings them to the Eye of the Viper, a cave deep, deep in a mountain where the Soul Eaters have made their lair and intend to sacrifice 9 hunters to unleash demon hoardes under their control upon the world.

The mythology is getting a tad out of hand though. I don't know whether these forest people simply don't understand science and physics and mistake everything for fate, miracles and magic or if it's just their ancient point of view trying to make sense of it. That complaint aside, it's a good book that you'll not want to put down until you've finished it. It's way more fast moving than Spirit Walker and brings the COAD series back on track.

5 out of 5 stars Great series........2007-04-07

It was a cool book. I like how it took place on a icy snowy mountain. Can't wait for the fourth book to come out!! This from the mouth of an adventurous 10 year old boy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Companion Book for the Series.......2007-03-20

While this book has many surprising twists and turns, it is enjoyable and fun to read. Once again we follow Torak, Wolf, and Renn viewing them all, from there point of view.
Very mild changes do happen though, such as, Wolf now calls Renn 'The Pack Sister' instead of 'Female Tailess'. And Renn also has a much major role in the book then say in WOLF BROTHER, and also the book switches to her view more.
This is a very enjoyable book and I recomend it to any one from 10-100.

Working together it appears that nothing, except maybe sheer dumb luck, will stop Hunter from returning to the Outer World. However this is before they come up against a creature called the Soul Eater. I hope there will be more Spider Riders books in the future. I mean there's still a cliffhanger at the end. Will Hunter ever make it home?

4 out of 5 stars Recovering Using Reality vs. Therapy.......1997-11-04

I admit I purchased this book from the "discount" section of a local book store, after having bought countless titles previously, all the while looking for the answers regarding my food addiction and subsequent recovery. What was the key to success? Who could help me transform? When I saw the title, the words "bulimia" and "recovery" jumped out at me, and I bought the book in a knee-jerk reaction, thinking it was just another in the series of failures. All of the reading I had done up to this point had proven fruitless. The book began much the same...tales of woe and sadness by recovering overeaters and bulimics themselves, and the author's own personal story, saying how we overeaters tend to cover our emotions with food, and ignore the steps needed to stay in recovery. "Yeah, yeah," I thought, as I grabbed another cookie, "tell me something I DON'T know!" (Chomp.) That is exactly what Susan did for me in this book. I was able to "put the cookie down" long enough to keep this book in my hands, getting more from the reading than I ever could from any cookie. What is different about this self-help book was that she offered real, useable solutions for recovery, even without intense therapy, and allowed you the options of which you would like to use. They have worked for others, and she encouraged their use in a manner that was neither accusatory nor demanding. She stated several techniques and affirmations to use in place of the old, outdated eating tapes that many of us overeaters have had ingrained on our brains for years. Susan developed and explained three phases of recovery, and I was able to envision myself in each stage. She listed guidelines and characteristics of each stage, to let you know when you had entered. It was inspiring to me to be able to have that goal in mind, instead of where my next meal would come from, or when my next purging session would occur. I was able to apply Susan's simple, yet necessary, steps to recovering from my addiction, and recommend thi

Who killed Queen Nefertiti? That's just one of the problems troubling Lord Meren, chief adviser to Tutankhamen, in the fourth entry in a wonderously detailed and totally accessible series of mysteries set in ancient Egypt. Avoiding virtually all of the Hollywood High Camp treatment of the period, Lynda S. Robinson recreates a world of brutal poverty under a very thin layer of opulence--a culture obsessed with death and corpses. While Meren frightens his family by poking into the suspicious death of Nefertiti, someone--perhaps a human, perhaps the demon goddess Ammut the Devouress--is killing common people in the city of Memphis, gouging out their hearts and leaving behind a white feather. Previous books in this splendid series--Murder at the Feast of Rejoicing, Murder at the God's Gate, Murder in the Place of Anubis--are available in paperback.

Book Description

Someone--or something--is slaying innocent persons on the night streets in the royal city of Memphis. Frightened citizens believe it is the gruesome work of the Devourer, the eater of souls, one of the most fearsome gods in the Egyptian pantheon. Even Lord Meren, the Eyes and Ears of Pharaoh, is baffled by this series of horrific crimes whose victims have only one thing in common: the grisly manner of their deaths.

Is the evildoer truly the Devourer, risen from the netherworld, or just a mere mortal? Between Lord Meren and the truth lie dangerous mysteries--in the city's back alleys and in the bosom of his own noble family. . . .

4 out of 5 stars The monster of the netherworld stalks Memphis.......2002-12-06

While this story doesn't give away the solution to MURDER AT THE FEAST OF REJOICING, it continues a major investigation begun at the end of that book, so to that extent, there are spoilers. Also, I'll assume that the reader has some familiarity with Lord Meren, his family, and their fellow members of the court of Tutankhamun. Robinson has made this a stand-alone book, but as part of a greater story arc, it's best appreciated in context.

In the 21st century, many serial killers with religious delusions believe themselves to be various instruments of divine retribution: God, the Archangel Michael, and so on. But in the Egyptian pantheon, when a soul fails to measure up in the Halls of Judgement, the demon Ammut, Eater of Souls, carries out the punishment: annihilation, consuming even the heart. (In ancient Egyptian parlance, the heart, rather than the brain, was considered the seat of thought.)

In the 5th year of the reign of Tutankhamun, Eater of Souls has been called forth from the Halls of Judgement to Memphis, pharaoh's capital, to punish those who have woundsssed the nameless 'favored one'. Since part of the narrative, including the very beginning of the story, is from Eater of Souls' viewpoint, I was worried at first that Robinson had broken one of the fundamental rules of detective stories - no supernatural explanations - but the character is within bounds: the killer is a divided personality, part of which believes it is Eater of Souls.

In this series Robinson often introduces supporting characters in one book, laying the groundwork for appearances in later books. EATER OF SOULS introduces the Caverns, the rough area around the docks of Memphis where Kysen goes undercover seeking information. Ese, the beautiful but embittered tavernkeeper of the Divine Lotus, has many connections, ranging from Tcha (a floorsweeper with a night job as a housebreaker) to Othrys (Mycenaean ship's captain and crimelord). Tcha found his partner's heartless corpse after a robbery, and in a panic got the news to both Othrys and Kysen. Since the first victims were ordinary people, the lazy chief watchman has refused to see any patterns, launch any investigation, or pass any distressing facts to his superiors - but Kysen in his public persona brings in Meren. Then to the tally of killings 'not of the city' is added a devastating victim: the Hittite ambassador.

Meren is greatly troubled; he fears that various events in his own past will find him wanting in life's final judgement, and like many others in Memphis, he's afraid that this may be the *real* Devourer, after the troubles the kingdom has had of late years. If that weren't enough, his younger daughters are back in Memphis after their training in estate management by his sister. Bener is perceptive, clever, and wants to participate in her father's investigations. (She has talents in that direction - watch her inquiry into some suspicious purchases on the household books.) Isis, the younger, is preoccupied with attracting suitors; worse luck, she's developing a mutual interest with the irritating Reshep. (The king ordered Meren to sponsor him to get him away from the royal princesses; his attraction for women is a deeper mystery to Meren than any murder.)

The Nefertiti investigation takes a back seat to the 'heart thefts' - not because it's less important, but because 1) the pharaoh and the vizier must be kept stable for the kingdom's sake, so they're kept in the dark, and 2) anyone who seems to know too much about the matter tends to come down with a serious case of death. The slow start is believable, but maddening. The various dissatisfied courtiers and half-brothers of pharaoh at court tended to blur together at first. Finally, for any fans of THE LOST QUEEN OF EGYPT out there, Ankhesenamun is not a sympathetic character from Meren's viewpoint; her strained relationship with the king has kept her mostly off-stage in the series until now. In this book, she begins attempting reconciliation with Tutankhamun, but he and Meren both doubt her motives.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD Read!.......2001-08-13

This is the fourth of the Lord Meren books that I have read and I, personally, think this one is the best. It is written in such a way as to make the reader think it is a thriller -- the Eater of Souls is loose in Memphis (Ancient Egypt) and Lord Meren must find a way to appease the g-ds or find the person who is impersonating The Devouress. And when The Devouress comes after Lord Meren himself . . . I don't want to give anything away. GOOD read!

3 out of 5 stars Immerse yourself in another time!.......2001-04-02

These books combine eerie mystery with a fun fantasy of everyday life in ancient Egypt. The entire series is like a dessert topping for those of us who enjoy reading about ancient civilizations. Ms. Robinson brings to life in a fascinating way the details of daily life in old Egypt. The fourth in the Lord Meren series is gruesome and just a tad confusing. But it's rewarding in the end and I'm looking forward to another.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but simple.......2000-09-19

As a lover of historical mysteries, I had a great time reading Eater of Souls. Robinson's descriptions of ancient Memphis recall images of Holmes' London. The action keeps things going and the story flows pretty well. There are a few wild goose chases that are a bit frustrating, but overall the story remains focused. My only major complaint is that, outside of the main character Lord Meren, the characters are all quite simple. Most are one-dimensional and overly typed. I especially was annoyed by the other main character, Lord Meren's son Kysen, who comes across as an early day Ferris Bueller. But all in all, a fun read that brought ancient Egypt to life at a level rarely reached.

This is not the best Resnick book I have ever read. The curious otherworld interaction between Nicobar Lane and the alien Souleater is typical Resnick. Thought provoking and marcabre. It is difficult to imaging a more currious relationship between bounty hunter(Nicobar) and hunted(Souleater). In the end they seem to come to depend on each other. But not thought provoking enough for Resnick !!!! I like the Oracle or Southsayer by Resnick better. I give it three stars because it is a good read but if you have not read any Resnick books yet, then I recommend the Oracle or Southsayer.

5 out of 5 stars It is one if not the most memorable book I have read........1998-02-27

I was hooked from the start. Captivated as I became ONE with Nicobar Lane as he pursued and spent his life's savings on the Thing he thought was just legend, a myth or some quacked dream. I strongly recommend it.

Having been vegetarian for a short period of time, I was worried about how I was going to eat when I went from full-time student and part-time worker to working the 40 hour weeks with an hour commute round-trip.

There are so many facets of the book that I applaud:

Most importantly, Starving Students vegetarianizes the comfort foods that students (and busy professionals) crave . . . just like mom used to make. There isn't much glamour to many of the recipes, but that's a refreshing change from many of the cookbooks I've bought in the past. You don't go to this book for a sophisticated, gourmet meal. You go because you're hungry, don't have time to chop 50 things, and want to feel full and satisfied. Another thrilling point is that the majority of the recipes are prepared in under 20 minutes, and those that take longer involve baking in a oven with a short prep time (though I wish the time indicated on the recipes differentiated between the amount of time you're actively cooking).

And finally, I am so relieved to find a vegetarian cookbook with ingredients that I have heard of and have seen in a regular grocery store. There's nothing more frustrating than perusing a cookbook and getting excited about a recipe to only find that I would need to go to a specialty store to find ONE ingredient that I may never use again. The ingredients are simple, easily obtained, and though most of the recipes are for 1-2 servings, you can very easily double the ingredients so you have leftovers for lunch and avoid half an onion sitting in the fridge.

While I didn't find them particularly useful, there are lists included to help you stock your kitchen (basic supplies, utensils, appliances, and cooking ingredients sorted by supermarket department). There also are hints and tips to chopping and preparing for the easily-intimidated.

This isn't a book intended for the gourmet vegetarian chef. However, if the gourmet chef was exhausted, had a slow week at the restaurant and needed to pinch pennies, he or she would go to this book for some vegetarian comfort food.

3 out of 5 stars it gets the job done........2007-01-17

this book gives very easy recipes using very few ingredients, which is really helpful for students (or anyone, really) on the run. many of the recipes are palatable, but do not expect anything gourmet.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I hoped for.......2006-11-10

Not a student, but needed some inexpensive recipes. I'm also a "beginner" vegetarian, so this is more my cooking level.

5 out of 5 stars this is a great book.......2006-10-30

I first checked out this book when I was taking the plunge into vegetarianism. I found the recipes tasty and easy. The only problem I had was I do not own a microwave, so I had to adjust and do things on the stove. Now, nnearly four years into my meat-free diet, I find myself living in a cramped studio with the tinest kitchen I've ever seen (my fridge isn't even in the kitchen it is so small). So, I brought "The Starving Students' Vegetarian Cookbook" off of the bookshelf and back into my kitchen. The recipes are fast, easy, and tasty-and don't take up a lot of space to prepare.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic! what every poor veggie needs!.......2006-03-03

My mom got this book for me when I first moved out on my own and it saved my life! I never cooked before, and I almost make at least one thing out of here every day!

Favorites of the boyfriend (a carnivore) and myself include the Gourmet Mushroom Burger, almost all the pastas and the Zuchinni Omlette.

a note to the reviewers "Disappointed" and "Buyer Beware" below. You just have to carefully read labels in the items you buy! You don't have to follow the recipes to a T, I substitute You can't believe it's not butter Light, or use a canola oil spray instead plain butter. Reduced-fat cheese works just as well as regular. And there are brands of worsteshire sauce that don't have anchovies, I live in SoCal and Ralph's brand is veggie friendly! just a head's up.

5 out of 5 stars Starving Students' Cookbook.......2007-02-21

Both my sons are grown and are on their own. Being the smart Mother that I am, I bought each son one of these cookbooks as he was leaving home for college. I had already taught them some cooking basics, but I knew they would "starve" for Mother's cooking. These recipes would at least give them tasty meals and remind them of Mother's cooking. We actually used the cookbook before they left home, and we would critique the recipes. I would give them hints on substitutions, optional ingredients to add to the recipe, and dishes to round out the meal. They thought that was valuable. As one son reminded me over the weekend, "Mom, cooking a meal for a girl will really get her attention!" I'm about to get my 10-year-old grandson his copy now. We have a tradition to continue!

Decent starting point for cooking-impaired college students if they don't mind eating eggs and potatoes often. A little more variation in the recipes would be nice as well as some pointers on how to substitute ingredients and an explanation on why some ingredients do (What is the purpose of using cornstarch? I know, some of it is common sense, but heyyyyyyy.... I'm a stupid college student). For example, for one recipe for frying chicken, I used pork and it tasted fine.

Also, some of the recipes don't really work. Baking chicken drumsticks at 375 degrees in the oven for 40 minutes is not enough for thoroughly cooked chicken.

On the upside, the cooking tips were really helpful. The book could use more of those, like be aware that if you heat oil, it pops and it could land on your face or burn your arm.

Overall, this book provides some ideas, but I wouldn't rely on it too much. Not really worth the purchase. Flip through it in the bookstore like I did and save some bucks for uhhh.... buying food. =P

5 out of 5 stars Buy it if you can't cook...or even if you can!.......2005-10-18

I've owned a copy of this book for MANY years.

If you don't know how to cook - this is the book for you. The recipes are easy, simple, flavorful, and "stick to your ribs" - all while being on a budget.

If you DO know how to cook - it's an excellent book to have for a quick change-of-pace meal, ideas for when you're craving some "comfort food", or as a base to add your own personal touches, to create your own nouvelle cuisine.

5 out of 5 stars Great for those that don't know how to cook or just want it simple.......2005-07-18

I love this book. I have owned it since the '80's when my mom bought it for me when I was in college.

I only read one review that gave this book a low score. In it the genius says "I know how to cook" and "Anyone can fry an egg".

So... why did he buy this book? If you are Emeril, then don't buy this book. This book is meant for us fools who actually don't really know how to fry eggs. Or more importantly, those of us who have lives outside the kitchen.

If that is you, BUY THIS.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2004-10-02

I have been out of college for many years and still love this book. I do not enjoy cooking and this book has a lot of great but simple ideas that don't require a ton of steps.
