If only a zero star was available..........2005-09-29
Hmm.. well I don't want to sound like a jerk because of course some people liked this book.. But as for the reasons I didn't: The story seems to be reaching for something that just doesn't pay off.. kinda like an over the top 70's space movie that is poorly done. The art was done by changeing illustrators with every different timeline. I am not a big fan of that in the 1st place. The final wrap up art was done in a style that you really have to stare at the panels to just tell what's going on not to mention the crappy story telling. Honestly, I don't really know what else to say other than I found it God-Awful. F
For fans only.......2004-04-12
I am not a regular comic book reader, at least not since I was about 11, but I'm always curious about comics. So when I saw this one in the library I grabbed it, hoping it would be gothic, dark, cool, moody, and a good read. It's 1/3 gothic, but that's about it, and I was rather disappointed with it; even for free. The graphic novel features three different Batman-themed stories, set centuries apart, each one showing a member of the Wayne family battling an immortal enemy who stalks the family for centuries.
Leaving aside the question of how the family survives with this guy killing off the prodigal Dark Knight when he/she is still a young adult each generation, and the fact that the bad guy has no real reason to battle them at all, none of the stories are very good, and the artwork is consistently muddy and mediocre.
The first tale is set in the Middle Ages, with a Batman guy on a crusade. While carrying gold to pay a ransom for some other captured crusaders, he and his party go to sleep one night and when the batman guy wakes up later, there's a gigantic castle next to him, and everyone else in his party is dead. Why? Where? Nevermind. This one is basically a sub-par Conan adventure, minus the muscles and gore, where the sword-wielding hero battles demons and a dark wizard. Only the tacked on introduction and conclusion in later years, where the Batman character is facing a trial during the Templar purges, redeems this one at all.
The forgettable middle segment is laughably silly, with amazing escape after amazing escape, culminating in a battle in space and earth's orbit as Bruce Wayne tries to keep a meteroite from destroying the world.
The last segment, set in the far future, was by far the best, simply for the inventiveness of it. Gotham is divided into upper and lower, with upper in near orbit and lower a lawless slum nightmare. There's a wacky planet of the apes aspect to things with gorilla guards/servants, and Robin played by... a supersmart chip. That was by far the best thing in the entire book, and the only laugh, and the episode goes downhill from there, with Batgirl again battling the family's perpetual enemy and winning at last, sort of.
I'm afraid my synopses have made it sound a lot better than it was, since both my girlfriend and I skimmed the whole book in about 10 minutes and were left shrugging and disappointed. There's no artwork that stands out; it's all trying too hard to be stylized and cool, and none of the stories are intelligent or detailed enough to be memorable. I wish I hadn't spent the time to read this one for free, so I can't imagine anyone who isn't a really hardcore fan of Batman comics enjoying this. Much less after paying $14 for the privilege.
"I win again. I always win".......2004-02-09
Batman: Dark Knight Dynasty is a great read for any Batman fan looking for something different. This is an Elseworlds tale, meaning that its events have absolutely no effect/impact on mainstream continuity. The story features three generations of the Wayne family who must don a bat-costume to thwart the machinations of the immortal Vandal Savage. One tale takes place during the Crusades, another takes place in present time (although it's not quite the Bruce Wayne we know), and the final arc throws readers into the distant future where humans co-exist alongside talking monkeys. The stories also feature re-imagined versions of Catwoman and the Scarecrow.
Each chapter is presented in its own distinctive artwork, from the beautifully painted "Dark Past" to the digitally coloured "Dark Present" to the semi-sketchy "Dark Future." Vandal Savage is a wonderful foe, and definitely earns his place as one of DC's elite villains; how do you stop a madman that can regenerate destroyed flesh and survive a freefall from space? Each "Bat-man" (and Bat-woman) gives the fight all they've got - and sometimes even that isn't enough.
Dark Knight Dynasty, due to its Elseworlds status, is a relatively obscure title that'll probably be passed over by most fans. But do yourself a favour and get a copy of this stand-alone story, it's well-worth the effort.
Diggin' Dark Knight Dynasty.......2003-04-09
Incredible tale(s) about 3 generations of the dark knight and each is spun together with an impressive nemesis
One Dark Knight is not enough.......2003-04-09
What a cool concept. Batman through the ages (and genders). This book has well thought story lines and marvelous colors to match. I'd like to read more of these ancestorial tales.

Chantal Coady is a most exemplary chocoholic. The author of Real Chocolate and owner of Rococo, a specialty chocolate shop in London, Coady's resumé includes such enviable accomplishments as starting the Campaign for Real Chocolate and launching The Chocolate Society. Obsessed by chocolate, Coady always dreamt of opening a chocolate shop, and over the more than 20 years since she opened one she's become an expert on all things chocolate, and these days Rococo even makes its own.
Real Chocolate begins with a comprehensive history of chocolate through the ages, introduces us to Rococo, and best of all, waxes poetic about just how good for us chocolate really is. Apparently it's one of the most nutritious and easily digested foods known to man, containing a multitude of vitamins, minerals, and complex alkaloids; is an instant anti-depressant; and has antibacterial properties. Recipes in this mouthwatering volume are categorized as savory or sweet--and there are a remarkable number of savory ones, including Eggplant and Tahini Crostini, made extra-rich by the addition of cocoa powder; Chocolate Tempura with cocoa nibs in the batter; and Lacquered Duck in Chocolate Sauce. Sweet options include White Chocolate Pannacotta, Dark Chocolate and Cherry "Crème Brûlée," and a stunning Pear and Chocolate Tart. And since it's so good for us, why not start by delving into chocolate personified: a big mug of Coady's Old Fashioned Hot Chocolate--smooth, thick, rich, and absolutely delicious. --Leora Y. Bloom
Book Description
Unadulterated and pure, real chocolate is truly good for you-rich in minerals, antioxidants, and a natural antidepressant. At last, free yourself from the guilt of eating and enjoying chocolate with these sensuous recipes that satisfy both mind and body.
For Chantal Coady, real chocolate is definitely a miracle food. Proprietor of the Rococo shop on London's Kings Road--a place of pilgrimage for chocolate lovers from all over the world--Chantal is evangelical in her zeal to remind the world of the marvel real chocolate is. Her mission is to distinguish real chocolate made with all-natural ingredients from the oversweetened additive and fat-laden candy product that is so often passed off as the real thing. She is also an ardent advocate of chocolate's mood-enhancing and health-boosting qualities.
Beginning with a brief history of chocolate, the book goes on to explain the processes involved in taking cocoa from bean to bar, and how different varieties can be blended to yield a subtly complex final flavor. With the Five Senses Chocolate Test, we learn how to recognize true quality in chocolate in the marketplace. In the Chocolate Know-How section, a series of user-friendly "master classes" employ step-by-step photographs to demonstrate tampering, molding, and sculpting, as well as various ways to make ganache.
The heart of the book, Real Chocolate Delight, contains fifty delicious recipes arranged in three chapters on Savory Chocolate; Desserts and Drinks; and Cookies, Cakes, and Breads. Here you'll find fail-safe instructions for timeless favorites like Chocolate Mousse and Chocolate Roulade, as well as startling new departures like White Chocolate Panna Cotta with Saffron and Cardamom, Dark Chocolate and Cherry "Crème Brûlée", Pan-Roasted Chicken with Chocolate Vinegar, and even Chocolate sushi.
Read Real Chocolate and you'll never again look at this daily treat in the same way. Not only will you have a greater understanding of its makeup and versatility, but you will be able to work with chocolate to create taste sensations you never dreamed were possible.

Much more than just recipes.......2003-10-10
If you're looking for a quick summary of this book, even more revealing than the jacket copy is the little note tucked away with the catalog info even before the table of contents: "Throughout the book, whenever recipes call for 'real chocolate,' what is meant is best-quality bittersweet chocolate with minimum 60 percent cocoa liquor..."
You see, this book is about a lot more than recipes and attractive photography of tempting delights -- packed though it is with both of those things. Chantal Coady is a crusader, and her cause is summed up in the name of the organization she formed, the Campaign for Real Chocolate. Not for her is the mass-market, fast food-style chocolate consumed (and enjoyed) by so many British and Americans. She is passionate about *real* chocolate, as defined above.
It's certainly true that anyone who has tasted real, high-quality chocolate finds it hard to get excited about the mass-produced vegetable-fat chocolates in the supermarket checkout lines. What you will get excited about, though, are the recipes and ideas in this book. The author takes us far, far beyond cookies and cakes, presenting intriguing ideas for incorporating chocolate into appetizers, entrees (including meat and pasta dishes), martinis, even sushi and tempura ... plus, of course, cookies and cakes.
There are a *lot* of books about chocolate out there, and it's hard for one really to stand out from another. If this one does stand out, it's due as much to the author's campaigning fire as it is to her obvious passion for preparing great chocolate dishes. I admire people who take their work seriously and are very good at what they do, and Chantal Coady hits the mark on both scores.
Yum.......2003-02-23
This is a wonderful book to give as a gift. It is even better to buy for yourself! The pictures are incredible and make you want to dive into the receipes. Some of the ingredients called for are not all that easy to locate but the effort is worth while. This is a yummy great book.

Thoughts about Chocolate Men, Editors, and non-Environmentalists.......2006-06-22
Cons: #1 When I read a book full of editing mistakes, it makes the book and the author seem rushed. At the beginning, the author says that the editing was excruciating and thanks six people. But I don't understand how six people couldn't find the 50+ glaring errors I saw. Commas were out of place, doubled verbs, repeated terms, etc. If the topic wasn't so interesting, I'd have pegged the book as sloppy and not bought it. But I did. #2 I've never read a collection of stories where no writers were given credit but the main one. I found it disappointing that the TOC doesn't give main attributors or even a mass amount of names in the thank you's. #3 When I first opened the book, I was weary because it read with the same angry-black-man-even-more-mad-at-The-Man logic that I hear daily. Not to say the points weren't true, but I was hoping to see some personal responsibility as well. It took awhile for that to come. I wanted to read antecdotes, not complaints. #4 I absolutely did not like "Recycled Properties." It has the same self-destructive logic that harms black people's health and their environment. I am a vegetarian who refuses to litter, and to act like nature and animals being slaughtered and tortured is secondary annoys me. The same black folks who yawn at PETA will lose their minds if they don't see meat on their dinner table and complain about how bad the neighborhood looks. It is this same self-destructive logic that leaves areas like the projects in worse shape than it already is. This story reminds me of someone who kicks a dog and pees on the wall because he's mad at the way someone treats him. When a person is this selfish and only worries about himself, this is repeating the same logic of racist white people: It doesn't concern me, it's not my culture, so I don't care. It doesn't hurt to recycle a bottle. #5 I also was not a fan of "Good Morning" because it left out all of the rude, tacky comments that a sista may have heard BEFORE she got on the elevator. There are some people who speak with polite intentions but many more with alterior motives and after awhile, a woman is on her guard altogether. Men take the easy route and blame it on money, but in my personal experiences, it's demeanor. Clothes don't make up for attitude, and sometimes men can be disrespectful with their eyes regardless of their words. #6 The last thing that annoyed me was all of the symbols in place of curse words. The book was for black men, created by black men, and odds are that the readers will be grown. We can tell what the words mean and the symbols all over the place were distracting, especially when the first letter was left out because readers may spend more time trying to figure out why there weren't enough symbols for one curse word, too many for the next, and letters left out for others.
Pros: I thought this was an extremely intriguing book and I'd recommend many. My favorite stories were "Attention NASA, Take Off Has Been Denied," "Lockdown," "Revolution Is Between Apathy Boulevard and Complacency Street," "Do Not Let the Reflections Be Real," "Flashing Lights," "Watch Out A Snake With A Knife," "Don't Forget," "I Know You Saw Me," "I Don't Want It," "Evidence Always Found But Never Lost," and "Did You Hear That?" These brothas told stories so realistic and so I wish they would've been given proper attribution. The stores delve into a vast amount of topics like the man's side of a woman being pregnant and having no rights; the kinship on the basketball court; the belittlement in jail; positive black historical leaders; black-on-black crime; the stress of seeing a police car following a black man's car; the "snake"-in-a-barrel mentality; being accused of whiteness just because you're educated; AIDs, sistas trying to trap women by leaving their belongings behind; and music that degrades women. There were so many dead-on points that I believe black men will give each other dap on, cry about, laugh about, and black women NEED to read, specifically "Evidence Always Found, But Never Lost." I never did understand the logic in leaving your belongings behind, rather childish to me. I agreed with quite a few of the stores, learned some valuable information for my own writing, respected most of these brothas' perspective even if I didn't agree with others (MINUS the two mentioned in the "cons"), and think this book should turn into a discussion. I'd recommend this book for any multicultural course for those who want to learn the REAL life of a black man--and all the various parts of it. These writers delve into love, fatherhood, and all the rest of the subjects that any other human being goes through, just added a spin on it with less talked about issues. I'm sure it was therapeutic for these guys to be able to get their thoughts onto paper. Pretty good job, in my opinion.
A Chocaholics Poetic Dream.......2005-05-05
Chocolate Thoughts is a book filled with love, frustration, inspiration, and insight. I found the poetic essays heartfelt, and thought provoking without venturing into the offensive. S. James Guitard writes of a love so beautiful it leaps from the pages and plants a picture of it in your mind. His poems and essays on the oppressions and frustrations of a black man in white America manage to convey his message without slapping you in the face with it. His approach is subtle and smooth, actually speaking to his readers instead of screaming at them. As a lover of words, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to seeing more from this talented author.
How does it feel to live as a Black man in this society?.......2002-11-28
What makes this book so special is that it gives others the opportunity to understand how it feels to live in our society as a Black man. So much to think about lies between the covers of this book. It is their truth, their reality that is shared with the readers. This book makes the perfect gift for the men you love. He gives voice to their feelings. James says what they think but sometimes cannot express. Learn, understand and enjoy Chockolate Thoughts today.
Now that was fine writing.......2001-10-14
I read Chocolate Thoughts on a whim and I'm so glad I did. This collection of essays, poetry and stories is written straight from the heart of the author and remarkably it tells the story of black men from all walks on conciousness. I loved it and can't reccomend it enough. I'd like to give it six stars.

Customer Reviews:
Decent basic advice, a little dated.......2004-11-18
This book is a decent, easy to read introduction to the basics of low-fat cooking and eating. It will teach you how to read nutrition labels and the like. The humor, and the writing in general, are not great, but very readable if you like your information easy to swallow.
Unfortunately, the advice is a little bit dated about the specifics of, for instance, what the legal requirements are for a product to be called "low fat." When in doubt, do your own research. It also does not take into account any recent findings about, for instance, the glycemic index. If you are well versed in these things, the book will not help you.
For some, the most helpful part will be the final chapter, called "Embarrassingly Simple Recipes." If you have no idea how to cook, or no idea how to cook low fat, this will get you started, with recipes for how to cook skinless, boneless chicken breasts and how to make simple dishes with a variety of grains, vegetables, and fruits. There are a fair number of these recipes - definitely enough to get you started, if that's what you need. Again, if you can already cook low-fat or you want a real cookbook, this is not what you need.
best book i've read for a normal person trying to eat well.......1997-09-03
I am learning to live a low fat life and have looked at and read several books that were boring and preachy. This book makes it easy to catch on and understand why we all should eat differently. It's also funny. It's like sitting at my neighbor's kitchen table and chatting while a great dinner is being prepared
