4 out of 5 stars An Inside Look at Whaling From a Little Girl's Eye........2001-04-15

I was so amazed at the writing ability and language skills of a very young child. Laura Jernegan's account of her three years aboard a whaling vessel kept me reading. I couldn't put it down! Nestled among her diary notes was useful and interesting information regarding the capture of whales, equipment used, and the manufacture of whale and sperm oil aboard the ship. Equally as interesting was her acount of what the family had to eat,the weather, and playtime activities of her brother and herself. I can't wait to read the other eleven books in the set!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Star Trek books in the numbered series........2007-01-28

As might be expected by anyone familiar with Peter David's later writing, this book, one of his earlier efforts in the Star Trek universe, is one of the best of the series. It is a perfect example of his style, which is very distinctive: high action, high emotional drama, but always told with a tongue-in-cheek wit that keeps the reader from feeling that he takes his stories TOO seriously. Even though it is an early effort, and in some ways his writing matured over the years, I would still rate this not only as one of the best "Trek" stories, (as many of his stories could be said to be) but also one of his best.

4 out of 5 stars A readers' opinion.......2005-12-23

This was interesting. Much detail written about Sulu between TOS and the ST movies. Demora, as a semi-b@stard child growing up was interesting. While we don't know much about her as an adult.
The author makes some logical leaps of faith between familiar chars. How they run into each other between the TOS, Movie era. How they kept in touch, even becoming part of an adoptive family with each other. It worked for me the way it was written.

Interesting take on the Enterprise-B Captain and his rocky relationship with his Admiral father. Chekov sometimes is 'over the top' but a loyal friend of Sulu. As the story unfolds, it starts out sad, but quickly ceases. We see a Capt. Sulu commanding the Excelsior, showing obvious influences of having served under Capt. Kirk. The novel is NOT a 'Save the Universe' nor a 'Galactic civil war' but an intriguing mystery Sulu is determined to solve at any costs. A good read.

5 out of 5 stars A blend of humor and sci-fi.......2004-12-01

This is one of the best Star Trek novel I have ever read. Not only did it center around Sulu, who rarely gets center stage, but it also provided a lot of back story for his daughter Demora [briefly seen in Star Trek: Generations].

A perfect blend of plot and humor.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!.......2003-04-07

Just got through this book in 1 night. It was very nice to read a book centered on Sulu. The book delves into Sulu's character with excellent insights. At the same time, a good storyline unfolded. And (not to give anything away), I was surprised and pleased by the turn of events as the story neared its climax. Often, I feel I want something more when a book ends. At the end of this book - I felt I had all expectations fulfilled!

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Another gem by Peter David.......2001-02-19

How does Peter David do it? Just when I think I've read the best that Peter David has to offer, he blows me out of the water with another masterpiece. As I read Peter's novels, I find myself completely immersed in the story and the plot. I feel compelled to keep reading, just to see how the story will unfold.

No doubt about it, this novel is one of those which kept me glued to my seat throughout. Great character development, typical Peter David humor, and of course the mystery and suspense that only Peter David can weave. This novel is up in the likes of Imzadi and Excaliber Restoration.

Get this book and read it. I guarantee you will not be dissappointed!

4 out of 5 stars solid introduction to Pushkin.......2006-11-12

Pushkin is the Godfather of Russian literature. _The Captain's Daughter and other Other Stories_ is a decent representation of his writing style, but I found the stories much less interesting than his poetry. With that said, the title piece is by far the strongest of the collection. The story is full of high drama, love, intrigue and betrayal, as the main character struggles to maintain his sense of honor and dignity. It was a bit over the top for me, but no one writes about human emotion with the depth that Pushkin does. For that alone, _The Captain's Daughter_ is worth the read. Skip the other stories. In the final analysis, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars One of Russia's Literary Masters.......2004-07-26

If you are interested in delving into the fascinating world of Russian literature, look no farther for your starting point than Pushkin.
Writing from a perspective of one who knew how the Russian gentry and aristocracy lived, Pushkin had the great ability to weave into his narrative firsthand accounts of living as a member of the upper class.
The Captain's Daughter presents us with the young officer Grinyov, who is sent to be an officer, as his father was, in a far-flung regiment on the frontier. Here Grinyov, and his faithful servant, have an interesting adventure with fellow officers, ruffians and locals. I wont give away the ending, however, the twists and turns keep you turning the pages. All the while, Grinyov's character remains true to form, upholding the ideals of his upbringing.
Fabulous read...and a quick one at that.

4 out of 5 stars Worth a read.......2004-04-11

A nice sample of Pushkin's fiction talent, which is just as fun to read as his poetry.

5 out of 5 stars The Master of Russian Literature.......2001-02-28

Pushkin greatest renoun is based on his poetry. But I like his short stories very much. They are crisp, intriguing, and educational. These stories are a treasure of Russian literature. They combine mystery and realism, persuasive language and simplicity--all trademarks of Pushkin's genius.

5 out of 5 stars The dream of life........2000-03-30

Pushkin is Mozart of Russian verse, prose and drama. That sounds like banality to any Russian but may help a person outside of our literary tradition to deal with the Russia's greatest writer.

Small, less than handsome misfit in a constant and direct dialog with the Muses. A man whose social, financial and matrimonial achievements are no match to his art.

His talents bloomed in the Lyceum, he was hailed by the most prominent poet of Russian Classicism - Gavrila Derzhavin, who had appointed the youngster his poetical heir.

But Pushkin made only a few contributions to the genre - he was a devoted romantic, a Byronite. Mermaids, gypsies and noble robber brothers were the inhabitants of his adolescent poems.

Drinking bouts with local Hussar officers were toppled by the boy's passionate odes to Liberty. Alexander was a celebrity guest.

The guest he remained. The officers - The Decembrists - rebelled against the tsar. Puskin was not invited. The conspirators felt that "the son of the Muses" is fond of the revolutionary rhetorics, not the cause.

Later, asked by the triumphant monarch does he regret his absence in rebellious ranks on that fateful December day, Pushkin confirmed his affinity with his hanged friends. He wanted to be taking seriously, he was ready to suffer. But the tsar was only amused and let Alexander go.

Pushkin soared high in empirea, the verse of unbelievable beauty and clarity was streaming from his quill, but his everyday life was dominated by gambling, drinking and chasing the known libertines. Yearning to be accepted socially he offered his friendship to unworthy and very often had to contend with their condescending attitude. He was not the first socially awkward creator in human history but that understanding did nothing to lessen the pain.

In his final years Pushkin decided to settle down, to accept the responsibilities, to marry, to get the position in the tsar's court.

Natalia Goncharova, the first beauty of Petersburg, consented to marry him - her family was impoverished, Alexander - insistent. He was given the court rank - kamerjunker, nearly the lowest in the hierarchy, fit for a very young man making his very first steps in the court. He was insulted but the wife's acclaimed beauty compensated for that and the other disapointments. They all envy him - the lucky man!

There was never enough money to put that gem in a proper setting. The beauty was expecting her due. If Alexander is incapable there are others.

Art remained the only consolation. Once he woke up in the middle of the night, put on a light and fevereshly scribbled the newborn lines. He read them to the wife. - Don't you ever do that to me again! - said the sleepy beauty.

His art is not able to conquer that perfection, the beauty of verse is nothing to the beauty of flesh.

Pushkin is made fun of, proclaimed a cuckold. His life is nearing the end.

In his last year the tortured genius writes Captain's Daughter. No mermaids here, no gypsies. It's clarity and restrained beauty is unsurpassed in our literature.

A son of old officer Petr Andreevich Grinev turns seventeen. He is enlisted as a toddler in a prestigeous regiment in Petersburg, now he is an officer already. He has no extensive education - just the basic ideas of nobility and some knowledge of French. His name is telling - Petr means a stone, father's name - a man, a male. The father wants to keep the son unspoiled - Petr is refused his ticket to the Petersburg. He goes to the steppes instead, to the fortress in the middle of nowhere.

On the way he gets drunk, loses money, suffers from hangover, abuses his old servant - with no harm to his inner integrity.

He begins to enjoy the simple life in the fortress, captain's daughter is aware if his feelings and seems to feel the same way. Short and ugly comrade-in-arms, Alexei Shvabrin envies him and speaks dirty of the girl. Duel puts Petr in a bed. The love flourishes.

All that a prelude to the Russian rebellion, "senseless and merciless".

The fortress is taken, the captain is hanged, his wife lies naked and dead in a dirt. Petr's life is spared on impostor's whim. Masha, the captain's daughter, is hidden in the local priest's house. Shvabrin is appointed the fortress commander and has the girl who rejected him in his power.

All will end well. The young lovers are ready to sacrifice, their love will conquer all, the empress Ekaterina is merciful - just like her adversary "emperor" Pugachev.

Like a drowning man gasping for air Pushkin had to get in contact with the qualities his life is so utterlly lacking - integrity, loyalty, love accepted and given back. He had experienced all that in Captain's Daughter.

No matter what happens Petr Grinev is true to his nature - the quality respected by friends and enemies. He is always ready to do the right thing - no matter what's the price. There are things more important than life. Or love.

Puskin's life is over, he is not respected, not loved by the woman he chose. So he escapes in art, lives another life, the dream of life he never had.

Less talented writer would have succumbed to the pure escapism, but Alexander Pushkin is a genius, what we have instead is a timeless masterpiece, clear and restrained, very modern prose, the characters we care about. No one succeed in imitating that style.

Puskin is not very well known in the West. The verse is so Russian it defies a translation, the prose is deceptively simple - it's very different from "prophetic" writings of Dostoevsky or Tolstoy, the export variant of The Great Late Russian Literature. The reader used to contemplating "the mysterious Russian soul" will be disappointed.

I am reluctant to recommend that book to a Western reader. But Pushkin is one of the reasons I still live here.

Book Description

Annabel’s dad has an unusual planter in his yard, which is actually an old sailboat that he hopes to fix up. One day, Annabel climbs in, pulls out all the weeds, and yells, “Boat!” From that point on, Annabel’s future is set, and through hard work and self-reliance, she eventually works her way up on various kinds of boats to become captain of her own tugboat. This delightful tale traces a young girl’s love of the sea, from first fixing up an old boat and learning to sail with her father to captaining her own vessel. The book will make a particularly charming gift for fathers and daughters, for grandfathers and granddaughters -- or for anyone who wants to share with a child a love of the sea or a story about determination.

CAPTAIN ANNABEL
Published 2004 Down East Books
Illustrated by Emily Harris
Hard Cover, 36 Pages

This is the story of a small girl who, encouraged by her father, takes to the sea at an early age. Through her own diligence and efforts she works her way up through the ranks of schooners, ferries and tankers. By the time she is a young woman Annabel is the master of her own tugboat. Though "Captain Annabel" uses a maritime theme as a backdrop, it is more the story of hard work and self-reliance.

Facsimile edition of two rare Civil War "novelettes" written by a Pitt County Confederate soldier during the war. The stories provide firsthand glimpses of actual war scenes in eastern North Carolina; candidly depict internal divisions among North Carolinians in western Craven and eastern Lenoir counties; and offer an unusual glimpse of social and military life on the home front. Includes a detailed introduction by the editor.

These two works are reproduced as facsimiles--direct printings of the original text, not transcriptions. Type faces, lines, and print depth are uneven, just as they were printed in the Raleigh Mercury in 1864 and 1865.

              5 out of 5 stars Raclette (Quick & Easy).......2007-01-22

This book is the perfect and necessary compliment to the actual small appliance: the "Raclette", which we purchased for our college-age granddaughter for Christmas. She will be graduating as an RN in May of 2007 - loves to entertain and cook for friends in her itsy-bitsy off campus apartment. She is especially adventurous in trying out different cuisines and methods. This fit the bill to perfection! And, she was delighted. (PS: We're patiently waiting for our invitation to dinner.... she must be practicing.)

5 out of 5 stars This book is WONDERFUL.......2006-12-16

The father of one of my closest friends is French and their family, on special occasions, has traditional raclette dinners. The dish raclette--a warm cheese dish--is thought to have originated in Switzerland where farmers and herdsman would make a meal of cheese melted by campfire or hearth, scraped over potatoes and pickles. Whenever eating with my friend's family, we would eat those same traditional foods: racelette for the cheese, several kinds of hams, boiled potatoes, cornichons, and onions.

Loving the communal, largely cook-it-yourselves meals, I bought a raclette grill. But, I had never been in charge of the meal's preparations so with it, I purchased this little book sight unseen. It is fabulous. I'd give it six stars if I could. Not only does it provide useful tips, like how much food to make per person, including how much cheese you should buy for each person attending the dinner; how to care for and clean your grill; how to contain the scent of the raclette party (lots of cooking cheese) and what to do afterwards if you are unsuccessful (among other suggestions, an orange studded with cloves); what to do with the leftovers (if any!); and a simple but very valuable how-to guide for the host or hostess, but it also provides excellent recipes.

The recipes are organized into categories--fruit and veggie, meat, and seafood--and suggest different kinds of cheeses to accompany each, in addition to the traditional raclette. The book also include recipes for the grill, which I had never, confessedly, used at my friend's house. One of the grill recipes that I tried was grilling some polenta on the top grill while heating tomatoes, olives, sliced garlic, and fresh basil ribbons with cheese on top in the dish underneath and then putting the melted mixture on top of the grilled polenta -- extremely tasty and a fun alternative to the traditional raclette ingredients. In fact, it's the fun-alternative-to-the-traditional that is the book's strong point and makes it valuable. It also suggests beverages (alcoholic and non-) that complement the different recipes well, and has a few interesting recipes for side dishes and sauces.

This little book helped me throw one of my most successful and stress-free dinner parties. The suggested amounts were nearly perfect, I was prepared for the meal the NIGHT BEFORE (unheard of), the food was excellent (and cooked by the GUESTS!), and I could enjoy my guests without having to run in and out of the kitchen. Buy this book with any raclette grill and you'll have one of the best and simplest family meals or dinner parties around.

The only downside is that the book isn't longer.

2 out of 5 stars An Outdated Guide for Today's Raclette Crowd.......2006-04-13

I will agree with the other reviewers who state that the book leaves a bit to be desired in introducing one to the world of raclette; I must insist, however, that contrary to what one of our reviewers says, the word "raclette" here within the border Alpine states (Germany, Switzerland), can also refer to the cooking practice of using a 'raclette' grill to prepare a tableside meal with raclette cheese and various other ingredients, much in the way that the word "barbeque" can describe a way of cooking in the US, but can additionally be used to describe a particular ingredient or finished meal as well.

              1 out of 5 stars Raclette RipOff.......2005-10-16

Please be aware that this book by Claudia Schmidt has been published with at least three different titles and covers. If you have a raclette book by this woman, it's probably this one. I would rate it "0" but 1 is the lowest allowed.

1 out of 5 stars Raclette is first and foremost a cheese...........2005-07-07

I do not own the book but I just looked at the first few pages. I was mostly interested in the list of cheeses the author recommended. To my surprise the original cheese is not listed: Raclette. "Raclette" is not a grill or even a technique to cook with cheese, IT IS A CHEESE.
I think the author missed something the last time she went to the Alps (IF she went...)

              Product Description

Raclette is not only the name of a cheese but also a meal originating in Switzerland. In addition to this it is also a special appliance that allows entertaining your dinner guests right there at the dining table as well as the style of cooking with this appliance. While Europeans have embraced this style of dining for a few decades already, the rest of the world has so far been unable to find their way through the cloud of mystery surrounding raclette. The Insider's Guide to the Secret World of Raclette Dining is the first book in English to allow its readers to delve into the world beyond the cheese platter and discover the delicious world of melted cheese meals that you and your guests create directly at the dining table. As raclette is somewhat similar in style to fondue, the other great Swiss cheese dish, the novice will ask herself why raclette has remained a secret for over 500 years while fondue had its great breakthrough in the 1970's. This book explains it all, including the current struggles within Switzerland whether raclette shall remain a secret by restricting the name to a special cheese produced in the Swiss canton of Valais. Tips on how to make your next raclette party a resounding success and a fun occasion that everyone will remember round off the first part of this book. The second part consists of the recipe section and is full of inspirational recipes that you really want to try. Packed with serving suggestions and which cheeses are ideal for raclette melting. Recipes included: Traditional Raclette, Mini-Hamburgers, Raclette a la Pizza, Camembert with Cranberries, Spinach filled Crepes plus many dessert options. Brilliantly composed with colour photographs for every recipe, the book is the ideal companion to the modern table top Raclette grill. Showcasing the various ways that you can enjoy raclette from the traditional Swiss style to the way the French or the Dutch like to serve it. There is nothing more satisfying than getting back to

My first impression when I opened the package from Amazon was you've got to be kidding. $44.95 for this? It's a smallish book that needs better photographs. All the pictures have a yellow greenish cast that makes the food look unappetizing. I've purchased way better cookbooks for this price. This is definitely not a good value. In fact, I'm finding it hard to want to keep it for the price.
