A Fantastic 2nd Part to "Fit For Life"!!!.......2006-02-28
I loved "Fit For Life, and now reading the "New Way Of Eating From The Fit For Life Kitchen"...Lots more information on perfectly combining and eating...I couldn't put it down...I learned so much more and this is a new way of life for me and I highly recommend this for anyone who is totally serious about learning a new way of life, it is not a diet, it's a way of life that makes you feel so much better and it's so much healthier...
Simple, healthy recipes that taste good.......2002-01-21
I like this cooking book and use it wuite often. It has several sections, and I especially like the one on salads and salad dressings and the one of fruit smoothies. The book can actually be used by people who have not read the Fit for Life books, too, as it contains a summary of the main info on food combining and fruit consumption; while Fit for Life fans will like it as it will bring nice new recipes in their kitchen, while still assuring them they are eating as healthy as possible.
The book contains several sections: fruit smoothies, juices and salads; vegetable salads and many dressings for them: sandwitches (yes, you can have a properly combined sandwicth, and once you had one, you won't want to go back to the old way!); soups; vegetable dishes; feast and buffest dishes.
The recipes are simple to realize even for people who don't have much experience in cooking, and they are realized with readily available items. This book will allow you to cook for your family and know they are eating properly without much effort on your side, and they'll like what you cook!
Particularly recommended for vegetarians! But anyone will like this book.
I lost 30 pounds effortlessly and I'm healthier than ever........2000-08-23
This book helped me to drop 30 pounds in less than 6 weeks. I feel alive again. I've never felt this good. Not only did I take the weight off, but I also lost my asthma and chronic fatigue. Thank you Marilyn Diamond.
food combining saved my life.......2000-06-10
I started food combining to lose weight. Thanks to this book, I have not only lost the excess weight, but my energy level and my blood pressure and cholestrol levels have dropped dramatically, too. But , best of all, I AM NEVER HUNGRY.
This book is GREAT! I hope they put it back in print!.......1999-03-28
I have felt so much better since I have been practicing this way of eating. I have been on it for two weeks now and it is wonderful.

It is the definitive guide to macrobiotics, an approach to diet and lifestyle that promotes both inner peace and harmony with others and the environment. Macrobiotic Bible.......2007-09-05
I am completely new to the Macrobiotic way of life (it really is more of a way of life than a diet per se from what I gather). I had heard of it for years, and decided to read the book to determine if this is something I would like to give a try.
Wow ... the book is chock full of the overall philosophy ... and it sure seems complicated as well. And the emphasis on *process* as much as *food* is very VERY Japanese, and attractive on a a number of levels. I would recommend another book for recipes and menus, but this one introduces you to the concepts ans such.
The book is wonderful - and explains very well and clearly the Macrobiotic lifestyle. For this reason alone, I give the book high marks and say that if you want to know what it is about, this is a good starting point.
This is a very unconventional approach (as compared to the Standard American Way) to living and eating - as unconventional today as during its peak in the pop culture in the 1970's. I believe its lack of adherents, at least the apparent lack, is due to the lengthy cooking and preparation requirements (the ingredients are simple enough to get these days) as well as the unfamiliar cuisine (very Japanese based).
Also, there are a number of Macrobiotic councilors - really required in order to embark on the diet as it is somewhat customized to your needs.
I am undecided after reading the book if I will try this or not, as the preparation intensiveness and the unfamiliar cuisine (I love Japanese food, but I am not sure I will like it every day) as well as its overall complexity make it somewhat daunting. And you really need to find a councilor to do this "right" and unless you live in a major metropolitan area (usually coastal or progressive oriented place) it might be difficult to find someone to meet face to face with.
Overall great book - well written - 4 stars because I am unsure if this is right for me, but 5/5 as a book!
verry good book but not the best for north americans.......2007-01-06

Shortly, as I see it, is the best for beginners.
Not recommended as a first macrobiotic book.......2005-02-03
Michio Kushi is considered one of the fathers of the macrobiotic philosophy to life. This is a valuable book because it includes much information about the rationale of the eating philosophy. It does have recipes, but is more of a philosophy of eating and cooking book. I would recommend purchasing a cook book by Christina Pirello ("Cook Your Way to the Life you Want" or Cooking the Wholefoods Way") or Kristina Turner's "Self-healing Cookbook," in order to have access to a wider range of recipes that include more easily found ingredients, to complement "The Macrobiotic Way."
The Macrobiotic Way also includes guidelines to implementing macrobiotic living in other areas of life, such as reducing your exposure to electromagnetic forces, the importance of cooking with gas, water temperature for bathing, and exercises (stretches and yoga-like poses) that improve circulation to the meridians (such movements are best incorporated in Bikram's yoga series, and some vinyasa forms of the sun salutation; methods of exercises that I prefer to Kushi's static approach, but macrobiotics is finding what works best to meet your body's needs). In the realm of exercise he also highlights the benefits of walking.
This is a good reference because it has a wide range of information about the philosophy behind the macrobiotic eating system and the exercises are not often well described elsewhere. However, it was the first macrobiotic book I purchased, and when I first read it, the impression I had was macrobiotics was a very complicated approach to food, that encompassed mostly special ingredients that I could not find and that it required many special appliances and tools to start the program. I also thought that the dry writing style made it difficult to retain the information. It was not until I read Jessica Porter's "Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics," that I felt macrobiotics was accessible to every one anywhere, that I was able to return to Kushi and better understand the material. It is a good reference for some one has started macrobiotics and wants to know more, but if you are looking for a book to explain macrobiotics to the uninitiated and make them feel enthusiastic about the possibilities of the life style to empower their lives, I think Porter, Pirello, or Turner's books (in that order) are better gifts.

Christina Pirello turned to a whole-foods diet after being diagnosed with terminal leukemia at age 26. To the shock of her doctors, and without any medical treatment, she went into complete remission. She was surprised herself, as she'd been a vegetarian for more than 10 years and wasn't convinced that cutting prepackaged foods, sugar, and dairy from her diet would make that much of a difference to her health.
Pirello says, "Macrobiotics is an understanding that that food is energy, that everything we eat becomes part of us and helps create who we become." With this philosophy in mind, she advises how to plan menus, shop for quality ingredients, and combine foods for optimum energy. She then jumps right into her collection of more than 500 recipes, among them Fresh Corn Chowder, Béchamel Sauce, and Chocolate Hazelnut Torte. They should appeal to entire families; beans, tofu, and sea vegetables do figure prominently in many dishes, but rarely have these much-maligned ingredients sounded so tantalizing. Pirello's sassiness, adventuring spirit, and lust for life are readily apparent in these recipes, and her book should certainly help make the transition to a whole-foods lifestyle a smooth one. --Erica Jorgensen

Mom uses it.......2007-01-27
Bought it for my Mom. She made a few recipies from this book and they are great.
WOW! Love the food, Love the Learning!.......2006-02-08
I cook for my family of four by night and also for a single man by day. Each one of us has our own unique style of eating and various taste buds.
Everyone of us agree the recipes in this book create some fabulous meals. While there is a learning curve on some new fruits, vegetables and grains to use; Christina guides you through the process with a great index and introduction to each section.
If you are truly interested in spending some time learning how to eat Macrobiotically this is the cookbook for you. It is well worth the investment.
Great introduction to Macrobiotic cooking.......2005-10-11
I never knew there was so much to macrobiotic eating. Christina really gives you the information you need and how to get started cooking with these types of foods. It's not hard at all to do and I know it's so much healthier!
Christina is awesome.......2005-08-17
The book is chock full of veggie recipes written as lively as her TV series. The chocolate-hazelnut torte is out of this world!

health, happiness, peace... and nothing else?.......2003-02-06
People should always be careful of self-proclaimed gurus who have universal remedies...
I was a macrobiotic myself and gave up because I couldn't stand so many irrational restrictions and religious proclaims.
80% of macrobiotics is just vegetarian commom sense and has been around for millenia... but the remaining 20% is a dangerous mix of the Japanese likes and dislikes in food, with more than a pinch of new age mumbo jumbo.
Look for a good vegetarian book for food and search in philosophy or religion if you want answers on the meaning of life.
Confusing and Difficult to Read.......2002-02-01
Warning: This book simply may have not been for me, so take the star rating with a grain of salt.
I wanted to like this book, having heard a great many good things about the Macrobiotic diet. And I understand that to understand the dietary and health theories behind Macrobiotics, it's important to understand the philosophical basis. However, the way this book is structured, I found it quite frustrating to read, and I honestly failed to follow many of the connections that it was trying to make between the philosophical systems and eating issues.
I'm not giving up on the subject matter completely, but I suspect that this was not the place to begin. Great appendixes, on the other hand, and almost worth it just for them.
The Book of Macrobiotics.......2000-07-27

Sherry was my doctor!.......2001-02-02
FANTASTIC book explainng the macrobiotic diet and EXACTLY how and why it works! Sherry Rogers was my doctor for a number of years. She was always ahead of her time and now it shows! All of her books are wonderful, informative, easy to read and life saving. I hope everyone gets as much from this and all her books as I have. You'll be amazed at how much you DON'T know about your body, the environment and how we are killing ourselves until you read these books. Trust me, I am only a consumer here, but I pass these books on to everyone I care about and have for years! I'm going to post this to all the books I have read by Sherry. I just can't say enough about this woman. She literally saved my life (allergies, life and health threatening mineral and vitamin deficiencies) and my husband's too (bladder cancer). Love, Susan Manchester

Steers clear of the escoteric...wonderfully easy to follow!.......2003-04-29
As a complete and utter novice to Macrobiotic dieting & lifestyle, I couldn't ask for a better definitive guide! This book avoids the lofty, philosophical language usually associated with natural & so-called "alternative" diets, and you don't have to drive a 1970 Volkswagon van to be in sync with its format! The staple foods are clearly explained (along with detailed definitions of the Asian foods, which may be fairly obscure to most Americans, me included). I became interested in this diet when Madonna brought it mainstream, but had reservations about my ability to manage it myself.... would I need a staff of professional celebrity-worthy chefs, like Madonna probably has, or could I follow its format on an every-day basis, including shopping & stocking the kitchen? With this book, the answer is "yes". I recommend it not only for a macrobiotic diet, but also for vegan dieters (as it excludes dairy & eggs, as well as meat).
Perfect.......2001-06-04
Explains which foods can be eaten & how often as well as giving recipes
This book is life-changing........1999-05-20
I think this book is the best introduction of the macrobiotic practice. It includes everything you need to know to begin and will give you plenty to think about for a long, long time. It is clear, interesting, thought-provoking, and challenging. It changed my life.
Ohhh!!!.......1999-03-13
Michio Kushi, John Denver and Stephen Blauer has just written the most comprehensive book I have ever read. A must buy...

Book Description
Escape to the Maine seashore, an exquisite summer sanctuary where vacations stretch out forever during long, golden days and food is the stuff from which memories are made.
The summers that acclaimed chef Rebecca Charles and her family spent swimming in the Atlantic, scouring the beach for shells, and eating shore dinners inspired her to open the famed Greenwich Village restaurant Pearl Oyster Bar. In this heartwarming memoir, Rebecca combines more than seventy of her favorite recipes with captivating family stories.
Rebecca's adventurous granduncle Sam Goldsmith first took the family from the sweltering summer streets of Brooklyn to the exclusive seaside resort of Kennebunkport. But it was his sister-in-law Pearle Goldsmith, Pearl Oyster Bar's namesake and an opera singer with the Metropolitan and New York City operas, who fell in love with the rugged coast of Maine. Pearle passed this love on to her daughter, Eleanor, and her granddaughter, Rebecca.
Now, in Lobster Rolls and Blueberry Pie, Rebecca recounts her family's three-generation love affair with the small Yankee fishing village and shares the recipes that have New Yorkers waiting in line for hours to taste what food writer Ed Levine described as "the best lobster roll I have ever eaten."
Rebecca breathes new life into classic beach food. Whether re-creating an old-time clambake or grilling a whole pompano, she imparts the expertise that has made her one of the foremost seafood chefs in the country. She teaches the secrets of clamming, demystifies the selection and preparation of fish and shellfish, and helps you make these delicious Maine favorites in your own backyard, with recipes for her famous Pearl Oyster Bar Lobster Roll, creamy Scallop Chowder, Fried Oysters on homemade tartar sauce, succulent Lobster Pot Pie laced with sherry, and, of course, her famous Blueberry Crumble Pie.
With her mouthwatering recipes and moving family stories, Rebecca will inspire everyone to create fond summer memories of their own.

Great Book!.......2007-09-20
I really enjoyed this book, over all it is well written and the recipes look interesting too. It fills a glaring gap in the history of the Kennebunk's by providing a first person account of the Jewish experience in that famous tourist spot. It is something that has been overlooked by historians writing about the Kennebunk's largely because so little information on that subject survives or is available. Having lived in, researched, and written about the town of Kennebunk myself for over 20 years I really enjoyed the book however, it contained some really major, and embarrassing factual information. For instance, the "Brickstore museum" is really The Brick Store Museum, "Liz" Magnuson is really "Roz", there is no Kennebunk Historical Society, The Grist Mill Restaurant was spelled like that not Griste and to the best of my knowledge there was no newspaper called the "Kennebunkport Times". Also the "Main" Historical Society is really The Maine Historical Society. This may sound petty and nit picking but I think it's important especially when you thank someone in your acknowledgements and get their name wrong! I also found that in the book that the writer, Rebecca Charles, frequently interchanged Kennebunk and Kennebunkport as if they are the same town when in fact they are separate towns with separate governments. The only other issue I found annoying and distracting was her constant use of "David and me"; or "Momma and me" (for example) instead of the correct "David and I"; and "Momma and I". This is something an editor or the professional co-writer, Deborah Di Clementi, should have picked up on.
Other than the above problems this is a well written and entertaining book which I read it in one sitting. It was fascinating to read about the Forest Hill House and the people who original operated. This book will make an excellent addition to the many works of history all ready published on the Kennebunk's!
The vintage black and white family photos are lovely embellishments to a blend of memoir and cookbook........2006-10-15
From chef and owner of New York City's Pearl Oyster Bar Rebecca Charles comes Lobster Rolls & Blueberry Pie: Three Generations of Recipes and Stories from Summers on the Coast of Maine. Family history and heritage permeate a fine gathering of family recipes, from Sugar Snap Peas with Lemon and Toasted Almonds to Blackberry Nectarine Crisp. The vintage black and white family photos are lovely embellishments to a blend of memoir and cookbook.

Delightful memories.......2006-08-31
If you love Maine, you'll love this book. Rebecca Charles has written a memoire for all of us who share similar family histories. She has captured the special pull of the Maine coast that keeps so many of us going back year after year, expressing well how it remains unspoiled after nearly a century. And she's done it without being overly sentimental. My grandparents began our annual tradition of summers at Kennebunk Beach just before World War I and we now take the family's fifth generation every year. I enjoyed the book so much that I've given copies to half my family.
Great Memoirs, Touching book........2006-03-08
I'm not big fan of seafood, but this cookbook of three generations of a Scottish-Jewish-American family and their summers in Kennebunkport Maine, was captivating. Its chock full of family photos, memoirs, and touching pictures from the last century. I particularly enjoyed the text, the stories, and photos and would like to encourage the author to write a novel, or more memoirs and stories. It would be a fascinating and delightful to read more.
I cannot comment on the recipes. I do not care for seafood, but I found this book valuable for the stories alone which were touching. 5 stars.
two thumbs up!.......2005-10-17
I love narrative mixed with factual, so learning the history of a family and a place [Kennebunkport, Me.] while perusing tons of delicious recipes, was a really enjoyable experience. The subject matter, the writing style, the layout--everything was top notch. In addition to recipes, there's lots of handy food tips, like how to buy the right scallops. I would reccomend the book to anyone with interest in an enjoyable read, a good cookbook, or a beautiful coffee table book.
