    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Variety of the art, essays and fiction highlighting an exhibition at the Berkley Art Museum .......2006-09-29

I was pleasantly delighted by the variety of the art, essays and surprisingly fiction.

The exhibition is over 100 pages of the book in sections titled -
    VOID
    SELF
    DRAG
    OTHER
    COUPLE
    FAMILY
    ORGY
    WORLD
    UTOPIA
I would have enjoyed a larger format edition to view the art more clearly and would have benefited by having an index that could have guided me to favorite artists.

I would have enjoyed seeing more of the artist Tee A. Corinne to be featured and would have liked if one of the 26 essays were from her.

    From the publisher
This anthology documents a landmark exhibition at University Art Museum, Berkeley. Curatorial essays, artwork, fiction, personal essays, and rants explore gay, lesbian, and queer experience.
    "This illuminating work is essential..."
"...a revelatory ground-breaking show. By its end, all art is seen in a different light, and, perhaps most profoundly, so is difference itself."

From opening the introduction by one of the curators Lawrence Rinder - In a Different Light explores the resonance of gay and lesbian experience in twentieth-century American art. This exhibition has been developed through poetics rather than polemics: not a definitive survey of gay and lesbian aesthetic sensibilities, it is, rather, a gathering of images and objects which, "with a likeness burst in the memory," sheds new light on our collective history.
The initial inspiration for the exhibition was the dynamism and innovation evident in the work of the contemporary generation of young gay and lesbian artists. Not only has there been, in these communities, an outpouring of work in the visual arts, but, especially in San Francisco, there is a palpable sense of community: visual artists, playwrights, poets, performance artists, film-makers, and video artists present their work together in a variety of non-profit venues and small commercial galleries, work that is often itself inter-disciplinary and collaborative. These artists live in a generally hostile social climate, amid the constant threat of "gay-bashings," proscriptive legislative initiatives, and surrounded by the tragedy of AIDS. Remarkably, they not only persist in making art, but do so in a spirit of humor, generosity, and flamboyance. Much of this work, too, has less to do with representing gay and lesbian lives than with conveying gay and lesbian views of the world: it is outward- looking, gregarious, and socially concerned.

And concluding the introduction - In a Different Light opens the door to a fascinating new area for exploration. The resonance of gay and lesbian experience in twentieth-century American art has been profound in ways we are just beginning to appreciate. At the same time, it seems that the work of many of the younger generation of artists is telling us that our definitions of sexual identity are changing in unforeseen ways. Now may be the right time to reflect on our collective history while we still have one foot planted in "gay," "lesbian," and "straight" experience and the other stepping into a new world whose definitions--and pleasures--are, as yet, unknown.

2 out of 5 stars Simple language, dated pictures.......2004-09-15

This book is written for adolescents or (very) young adults. It describes Yup'ik village life in the 1990s from the point of view of an eighth grader. The approach taken by the author to personalize the details of daily life may be more interesting to a young person than a standard geography reference book. Nevertheless, one wonders how accurate the descriptions really are, and especially whether young Yup'iks would really look at their own world the way this outsider imagines. In that sense, this book is certainly a work of Western fiction. One amusing facet of the book is several pictures that are supposed to illustrate modern Yup'ik life; however, the children's shoes are clearly from the 1970s. Either Yup'iks are just now starting to wear 1970s shoes, or the author has not updated her pictures from her earlier visit to Alaska. Also, a picture from the chapter that supposedly takes place in February shows a child walking outdoors in a sweater without a hat or boots. Is this possible in the southwest coast of Alaska? The language of the book was quite simple (did it have to be THIS simple?) and most of the topics would be suitable for middle school children.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars A challenge to outgrow a "Pediatric Hanukkah".......2000-12-21

Exciting, passionate, creative, original, inspiring and informative. This was my quickie review for those who must buy the book immediately. But let us cast a look at a book written under the auspices of the Hartman Institute in Jerusalem which therefore guarantees its pluralistic, intelligent and intellectual approach.

After the usual blessings, and traditional and modern Israeli songs, the meat of the book begins with the Maccabees' "Megillah" culled by the authors from the Books of the Maccabees and other historical and midrashic sources. Naturally divided into eight sections for nightly readings of the story of Hannukkah. The writing is alive and gripping as we learn of the turncoat High Priest Jason,King Antiochus, the royal maniac,Hannah and her seven sons,Judah the hammer, the woman warrior Judith and others.

We are then advised to read of the heroism of a diferent modern hero every night. Pride of place is given to Natan Sharansky's personal account of how he persuaded the camp commander to light a menorah. Other heroes include Rabbi Levi Yizchak of Berditchev,Golda Meir.Yitzchak Rabin, the father of Reform Rabbi Hugo Gryn who made a margarine menorah in a concentration camp, and the zedaka heroes of Danny Siegel

By the way,its almost worth buying this book to marvel at the graphic design, and the numerous photographs of which pride of place has to go to the nine different hand postures of Rabbi Lawrence Bush representing prayer, peace, menorah, keeping kosher etc.Striking photos include that of a menorah in an apartment building overlooking a town hall in Germany bedecked with the Nazi flag, and non Jewish citizens of Billings,Montana, holding menorot to protest the anti-semitic actions of the Klu Klux Klan

Obviously children and teenagers get pride of place with over 40 pages of great ideas for exciting their imagination with stories, games, songs and cartoons.

A description of the Laws and customs(and their historical origins),ethnic foods,Christmas/Hanukkah celebrations in America, and mystical meditations lead us to the final section of eight(what else!)contemporary jewish thinkers reflections on the relevance of this festival today. As well as David Hartman,Daniel Gordis,Harold Schulweis,Irving Greenberg,Judith Kates,Herman Wouk,Mordechai Kaplan and Theodore Herzl Gaster,I am delighted that the longest article is reserved for Mordecai Gafni.

He refers to Hanukkah in terms of his forthcoming book Soul Print-our personal essence, our hidden light which is the DNA of the soul. He poignantly explains loneliness through his failure to appreciate the importance of his eight years old son's box of treasures. "He looked at me,a tear rolling down his cheek, and said:Abba,I gave you my box. In it were all the things I love. These are my things and you didn't receive them." The whirl of the dreidel is described as a metaphor for our desire to live in dance. The art of living is to know how to transform the inevitable falls into the dance of life.

Let me conclude that,as I have reviwed well over 400 books for the Jerusalem Post,I have over the years developed some sense of which books stand out from the shelves as being original and highly reader-friendly. Having previously read and used at my seder The Family Participation Hagaddah co-authored by Noam Zion,I now know to buy automatically any book written by him.

5 out of 5 stars Different Light - Great Light!.......2000-11-22

What do you get if you cross a Passover seder with a Hannukah celebration?

The answer can now be revealed: A Different Light, Noam Zion's follow-up to A Different Night, his contemporary haggadah. (Coming up soon: A Different Fight [Haman vs Mordechai and Esther...] and A Different Flight [Jonathan Livingston Segal]:-) )

Once you see the book it's obvious. Take a holiday that's nominally widely observed, but much less widely understood, and add meaning, history, art - turn it, in other words, into a family _seder_.

This is a great book: great as a gift, (for oneself, as well as for others)and destined to become a Jewish perennial.

      Happy Chanukah!

5 out of 5 stars A Different Light is Beautiful Science Fiction.......2007-02-15

Elizabeth Lynn bring a poetry to the often hard-scrabble of science fiction. In a future near-perfect, renown artist Jimson Alleca suffers from a debilitating disease that forces him to remain planet-bound while his lover leaves to experience the different light. When Jimson received a post-card equivelant of a message, he elects to take his life into his own hands, travel off-planet. It is, for Jimson, the journey of a lifetime, as he explores "the hype" meets and learns from "spacers" and even manages to find his first love.

Lynn's prose has a soft elegance to it, flowing from metaphor and allusion into the reality of the surrounding science fiction world that seems so real and has so much depth. There always seems more to explore, more to see, and more to do.

          2 out of 5 stars a good book on a bad story.......2005-05-04

i will not discuss ms lynn's writing skill: one page melts in the other and her style is always smooth, delicate, sober, her expressions deceivingly simple sometimes even lyrical. it is a writing made of small touches, light shades, always convincing if not always moving.

the problem here lies in the story: hard as i tried i could not get involved, i could not get to love her characters.
the main issue is that of a love sick young artist doomed by cancer to die early in a world where an intimidating science nearly always guarantees a healthy, long lasting life. this issue, if a bit cerebral, could in itself be touching but in this case it left me cold.
i wanted to feel for the main hero, his lost lover being another man should have helped me identifying, but i simply could not.

it seems to me ms lynn was absent minded while writing this story: while retaining her usual skill she was not and could not move.

5 out of 5 stars A book so good a chain of bookstores was named after it!.......2001-02-13

Unlike the other reviewer I am a regular reader of sf & f, especially feminist and/ or GLBT-themed sf & f. I love(d) this book!!! I loved it when I first bought it in the late 70's and it is not at all dated. (I re-read it last year and was touched and amazed and overjoyed all over again.) The love story, the space opera and the primary conflict between the two men is as real and vital now as it was when it was first written.

          5 out of 5 stars Touching sci-fi story.......1999-06-04

I admit I'm not a fan of sci-fi and the first time I saw it, I was kind of ticked off by the cover. If it wasn't by Elizabeth A. Lynn, I'd have left it alone. But when I started reading it in the bookstore, I just HAD to take it home. It's a wonderful story of a painter, Jimson Alleca, who's fate is to die during a time when a being may achieve immortality. He may live for thirty more years if he stays in his world, but he longs for freedom and wishes to find his love, Russel O'Neill. And maybe, just maybe, he'll also find a cure for his sickness. A truly wonderful story that can only be written by Elizabeth A. Lynn. I read this almost everyday.

          This is her first Novel!!!?
This was a fantastic story. Very emotional, sensual, and griping.

A beautiful psychologist with memories of her abusive father haunting her, is immediately attracted by a drop dead gorgeous new comer to her town, who is the new investigator. She tries to stay away as she fears he is dangerous and is like her father and an ex-boyfriend.
As the memory of his tragic past and his lost follows him, he tries to stay away too. But the attraction between the two is impossible to be ignored. Meanwhile a big city kind of crime touches this small town and brings the two together.

Ms. Suzanne Cox hypnotizes her readers and will be undoubtedly a very successful writer. I am going to be her loyal fan and will read her second book, "Unexpected Daughter", and her future books.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF MAN by Suzanne Cox
          January 21, 2006

          Amazon rating 3.5/5

"In A Different Kind of Man, Emalea LeBlanc is a psychologist and avid motorcyclist, who also scuba dives with a search and rescue team. When Jackson Cooper comes to town, it is obvious he rubs Emalea the wrong way. Jackson is built like a football player and gives the impression of someone who would cause bodily harm if provoked. Jackson, who doesn't know that Emalea comes from an abusive family background, has his own baggage - he feels responsible for the death of his wife and child.

Jackson relocated to the small town of Cypress Landing (not too far from New Orleans) due in part to that tragedy. He was hoping for a more peaceful existence, but as the town's new investigator, he soon finds himself in the middle of a dangerous case. He worries that what happened to his wife and child will happen again to Emalea if he gets too close to her. A secondary plot involves a young boy whom Emalea is counseling - his family background is very similar to what Emalea had to endure for the first twelve years of her life. While at first this subplot seems unrelated to the rest, the story lines merge by the end of the novel." - Complete review at BookLoons - M. Lofton

While this isn't going to be a favorite of mine, the story line in itself was interesting, with several layers of story line going on at one time. This superromance had more adventure than I care for in a romance, but nevertheless it was an enjoyable read.

          Book Description

“Right food, right place, right time. It is my belief—and the point of this book—that this is the best recipe of all. A crab sandwich by the sea on a June afternoon; a slice of roast goose with apple sauce and roast potatoes on Christmas Day; hot sausages and a chunk of roast pumpkin on a frost-sparkling night in November. These are meals whose success relies not on the expertise of the cook but on the more basic premise that this is the food of the moment--something eaten at a time when it is most appropriate, when the ingredients are at their peak of perfection, when the food, the cook and the time of year are at one with each other.”
          —Nigel Slater, The Kitchen Diaries

Nigel Slater writes about food in a way that stimulates the imagination, the heart, and the palate all at once. The Kitchen Diaries brings an especially personal ingredient to the mix, letting us glimpse his pantry, tour local farmers' markets with him, and savor even the simplest meals at his table.

Recording twelve months in his culinary life, Slater shares seasonal dishes and the intriguing elements behind them. As someone who celebrates each visit to the cheese shop or butcher, he enthusiastically conveys the brilliant array of choices and encourages his view of food shopping as an adventure rather than a chore. A rainy day in February calls for a hearty stew; summertime finds him feasting on a lunch as simple as baked tomatoes with grated Parmesan. If an exotic mood strikes him, slow-roasted duck with star anise and ginger is in order. In The Kitchen Diaries, Nigel interweaves his meditations on how food should be enjoyed and prepared with his delicious recipes. No matter the season, The Kitchen Diaries offers a year-round invitation to cook and dine with the world's most irresistible lover of food. BACKCOVER: Praise for Nigel Slater

“His writing could not be more palate-cleansing… his acidic riffs put you in mind of Nick Hornby, Martin Amis and Philip Larkin all at the same time.”
          —The New York Times

          “Nigel is a genius.”
—Jamie Oliver, author of Jamie's Kitchen, The Naked Chef, and Happy Days with the Naked Chef

          “unpretentious, delicious”
—Nigella Lawson, author of How to Be a Domestic Goddess

“The recipes sound uniformly delicious, rustic and tasty...but they're also straight forward: easy to follow, easy to cook.”
          —Independent on Sunday

          “joyous”
          —Guardian Weekend

“Slater wants his food, above all, to be uplifting. As a cookbook, The Kitchen Diaries succeeds brilliantly.”
          —William Leith, Observer (London)

“it's a collection of scrumptious recipes, somehow written in such a way as to make your mouth genuinely water.”

5 out of 5 stars Intelegent and simple cooking.......2007-09-23

          Simple and clever recipies.
Intelegent writing for people that read about food writing like a novel in bed, and cook inspired by the recipies. Beautiful not over styled photographes.

5 out of 5 stars Slater is simply the best.......2007-09-04

Over the years I've bought every one of Nigel Slater's books. This latest one I had sent to me from Amazon.UK because I couldn't wait until it was published in the States. I'm not alone in my claim about Slater's superiority; that fierce critic Gordon Ramsay, in his autobiography, recommends Slater as the best too. Slater empahsizes the finest, freshest ingredients, and his recipes (often with many variations on a theme) are foolproof and usually very simple yet nonetheless subtle. This book is no exception. Every recipe I've tried has been a great success. Slater communicates his deep love of food and inspires the reader to focus on the essentials of pure taste, rather than on pretentious presentation or showing off, as so many other chefs do. This book is a delight.

5 out of 5 stars inspiring and fun to read.......2007-05-09

Every time I put this up on the shelf it manages to make it's way back to my bedside table. "The Kitchen Diaries" is such a fun read, and the recipes are so inspiring, that I just can't seem to get enough. I've read it through once and now I'm on to reading it one month at a time, depending upon which month I'm experiencing at the moment.

I bought this book to help me on the way to truly seasonal cooking. As a really seasonal cookbook it isn't quite perfect though. A lot of what Mr. Slater cooks has to do with what is in his fridge and what he's in the mood for. For instance, he suggests recipes for eggplant in the middle of winter. Since recently I have a problem cooking bell peppers outside of the summer months, I have issues with eggplant in the winter as well. But perhaps in England eggplant is a winter vegetable? Regardless, the book will put you in a seasonal place of mind.

What I love about this book is Nigel Slater's writting style. He manages to do what so many cookbook writers try to do buy can't quite manage; he makes you feel like you're in the kitchen with him. Throughout the book you will find yourself looking at the snow through his kitchen windows or watching the rose petals fall in his garden in the spring. You will smell the chops sizzle on his stove. (It helps that the photographs are superb.) Reading this book is living his culiary home life. It's fascinating. I love being taken to a different place by reading, and this book does that in a charming and often funny way. And I enjoy learning that not everyone cooks the way I do. It seems silly, of course not everyone cooks like me, but reading about someone else's kitchen eccentricities is a lot of fun.

I've tried three of the recipes so far; the pumpkin soup, the grilled lamb chops with feta cheese and mint, and, one of four asian-esque bean sprout salads. I can't say I made any of them exactly according to the recipe, but that's not really the author's point. I think this book is meant to inspire, not dictate.

If you like reading cookbooks as much as you like cooking, you will probably love this one.

5 out of 5 stars More than just a cookbook!.......2007-02-21

Nigel Slater has done an amazing job with The Kitchen Diaries. Writing down everything eaten for dinner for an entire year must have been a daunting task, but it makes a wonderful read - as his stories are both funny and inspiring - and it was reassuring to see that even well known cooks are not above takeout and beer every once in a while!

So far I have made probably 15 recipes ...all have been wonderful, and the hot chocolate puddings alone are worth the price of book...oh, and so is the ham with chorizo, and the Thai curry, and his fabulous bolongese, and..well you get the idea, right?

          A definite 'must-have'.

5 out of 5 stars Seasonal Ingredients = Wonderful Food.......2006-11-01

A large cookbook of 390+ pages, organized in a month-by-month way, containing over 300 new recipes and speckled with wonderful food photography emphasising the use of seasonally available ingredients.

However, because of the way each month highlights the availability of particular produce within the month itself, this cookbook shows that the current attitude of "supply and demand" is perhaps not the best way to cook. Nigel says it best:

"Our culinary seasons have been blurred by commerce, and in particular by the supermarkets' much vaunted idea that consumers want all things to be available all year round...I worry that today it is all too easy to lose sight of food's natural timing and, worse, to miss it when it is at its sublime best...Right food, right place, right time - it is my belief - and the point of this book - that this is the best recipe of all."

That is not to say that 'The Kitchen Diaries' is merely a seasonal cookbook, far from it. The month by month approach makes full use of available in seasonal ingredients, while Nigel's at-home-baking knowledge guides you easily through the recipes.

Pork loin cooked with grapes, wine and seasoned with salt, pepper and juniper berries, bruised potatoes, and Nigel's simply wonderful apple cake makes for a simple, yet wonderful dinner. Easy to make and seasonal to boot.

These are meals whose success relies on the ingredients of the moment rather than the experience of the cook.

Nigel's style of cookbook writing is something you either love or hate. I like the style and find it enjoyable to just read even if I am not cooking.

The Kitchen Diaries is an excellent addition to any Nigel Slater fan and a book worth getting if you love good food you can make at home.

`the kitchen diaries' by `Britain's best-loved food writer' (according to the clear stickie on the book cover), Nigel Slater is truly one of the most unusual culinary books I have seen since I began reviewing all sorts of different cookbooks, cooking science books, culinary memoirs, and culinary history books. The one similarly unusual book that comes to mind is the great `Honey from a Weed' by Patience Gray in that both are culinary diaries. The salient difference between the two is that Gray's book covers the cuisines of four important culinary locations, while Slater's guiding light is the food available through the various months of the year. Oddly, in spite of the great quality of both books, neither is a very good guide to the food from their inspiration. Both are meant less as a reference for looking up recipes and more for the kind of book you simply sit down and read from cover to cover.

I once described to culinary journalist and writing teacher, Dianne Jacob, the author of `Will Write for Food', that I thought there were three major styles of recipe writing. The first and most common these days is the model created by Julia Child in `Mastering the Art of French Cooking'. Everyone from James Beard on down rewrote his or her stuff in this style soon after this book came out. The second style is the `haute cuisine' / celebrity chef style epitomized by Joel Robuchon, with the assistance of Patricia Wells. These recipes are read less to prepare these dishes than to garnish insights on new cooking techniques and unusual ingredients. The third is what I described as the Elizabeth David style of recipe writing as this great writer did in her earliest books on Mediterranean, French, and Italian cooking. Ms. Jacob said she didn't think anyone wrote recipes like Elizabeth David (except, perhaps, Elizabeth David). I submit that if in no other way, then certainly in this style of culinary writing, Nigel Slater is the truest incarnation of Elizabeth David's style of recipe writing.

As he explains in his excellent book, `Appetite', he is all about a minimalist approach to recipe writing, to advance the greatest culinary pleasure of being able to cook without a cookbook, or, at the very least, with only the barest suggestions from the author on how to go about doing things with some ingredients at hand. This is the most attractive aspect of several current popular culinary writers, not the least of whom is Slater's compatriot, Jamie Oliver, who seems to worship the ground on which Slater walks.

This book is also a great study in the cardinal precept of Tom Colicchio's `How to Think Like a Chef' which states that recipes do not develop from an interest to make a tart or a roast or a ceviche or whatever. They arise from what the chef has on hand. This book is an essay on that principle in a way which makes the principle real for the average amateur cook who works exclusively at home.

One of the greatest revelations you will find in this book is the surprising truth that even distinguished culinary writers will often eat through the day by simply picking out of the fridge and that Slater often goes for two or three days without actually cooking a `sit down' meal. This rings so true that those of us who routinely watch Rachael Ray saying that she cooks full two and three dish meals every day, or almost every day at home in the Adirondacks seriously believe she is exaggerating just a bit.

The title of this book must be taken completely literally. It is so much of a diary that about 40% of the text in the book is more like the material in a memoir than in a cookbook. It is not unrelated to `cooking', as it describes the circumstances under which certain dishes come about. The primary circumstance is the season, or more exactly the month or time in the season. So, the book is organized by month rather than by quarterly season.

Another very important sense in which this is a `diary' is that it has very much a sense of being an unfinished work in progress. Slater is nothing if not eloquent in his writing in his other books. That is why I am so surprised to find plainly awkward, unpolished writing in this book. This leads me to believe that unlike much of his other work, this book has not seen the pages of a newspaper with its platoon of copy editors poring over the text to clean up awkward writing.

This awkwardness may make one stop and reread passages here and there, but it will clearly not detract from the pleasure of reading this book for dyed in the wool foodies. Another thing which may limit the interest of the book to food fanatics is that like `Appetite' and unlike some of his more popular books such as `real fast food' and `real cooking', all measurements are done in metric units.

In the end, if you enjoy writing about food, this book is simply a great find. It is one of those rare books which puts you into the cook's head and lets you see work in progress in a way I simply have never seen anywhere else, even in Colicchio's important book or in better writer / chef collaborations such as Bittman / Von Gerichten and Welles / Robuchon.

                    Very highly recommended for foodies.

5 out of 5 stars A nourishing read for foodies..........2005-12-27

If you know of Nigel Slaters other books you will no doubt just buy this regardless of any review as you will know what an entertaining writer he is.

                    If you are new to Nigel Slater then here is what I would say about this book;

If you are looking for a straight out 'recipe book' this isn't the book for you (I'd start with the excellent 'Appetite' - also by Nigel Slater). However, if you are a foodie that is inspired by reading about others inspiration and seasonal eating, then you will find this book hugely entertaining.

More a book on enjoying simple culinery pleasures than technique or presentation.

Forget such lifestyle books as 'Under the Tuscan sun' or 'A year in Provence', what you'll get out of this is a sense of place, mood, season and good living which is obtainable by all of us (in the western world) through the simple but elegant satisfaction good food can bring.

5 out of 5 stars an absolute must for Foodies - more than a cookbook - it is pure enjoyment.......2005-12-27

Nigel Slater is definitely one of the best food writers around today, his enjoyment of food - its textures, colours, tastes and aromas is inspiring and even now just thinking about the book I find my mouth watering.

He is a British writer and if you have not heard about him or his work then I strongly suggest you have a go - if you like Nigella Lawson or Jamie Oliver you will probably enjoy Slater.

In this hardback illustrated book he discusses his eating and cooking over a year. Each chapter is a month of writing and cooking - talking about food what is available and what he does with it. The start of the chapter has the month and a list of recipes he has made through the month. So you can flick through on a month by month basis, tasting the season's fruits etc, (there is also a helpful index by the way) Or you can just read it as a series of recipes in a diary like way.

The recipes are based on fresh and simple principles rather than trying to make complicated concoctions. And some of the simplest foods make the nicest things - I love his broad bean recipes (the American readers will probably know them as fava beans)and rhubarb deserts are great.

My only real issue with this book is that it is printed on a laid crean paper - which is fine for text but they also have printed the pictures in colour on it which loses a lot of the gloss and richness of the illustrations. I really enjoy good food photography - even if I never can present it to the same standard it is lovely to look at. While it is all nicely presented and printed I find it difficult to get the whole "Readers-Digest-Condensed-book" picture out of my head because that is what it looks like to me.

It is in hardback with decorated boards as covers, not easy to hold open to make any of the recipes. My suggestion is that you do what I did - read it though once and really enjoy it as a diary/book. It is a wonderful literary indulgence - then pick out the recipes you like, put them on paper in your own recipe book, and keep this lovely volume safely on the shelf to browse through at leisure (and without sticky fingers).
