Erik and Tim succeed in neatly presenting the extremely complex environment of the food supply chain as well as the substantial misconceptions that society has about food, its entire production and consumption chain as well as its consequences. For anyone even slightly motivated to reconsider his food choices and dietary behaviour, this book gives a wealth of arguments for tackling things differently. This atlas should be compulsory study in every education. Moreover its concept and design has strong educational potential.
I may fancy maps and atlases more than the average person, but the sheer pleasure of discovering so many insights in a such a simple way will surely work for most readers. The visuals used fit this type of information extremely well with and they make the key learnings from this atlas quite obvious for anyone.
As a compact database, the atlas is equally useful for the professional who needs to get a first view on some other aspects of this complex area where he may have less expertise.
If more people would have only a superficial understanding of some of the issues and causal interrelationships that figure in this book, it would already make a significant difference for the way our societies would value and use natural resources . This book is therefore very recommendable and useful reading and will definitely change the way you look at food and your daily consumption patterns.

My husband and I teach an indepth class on the Old Testament one semester then the New Testament the next semester alternating. We used the previous edition of this same book, but we were even more blown away by the new revised edition. Every student of the Bible needs to purchase one. They are priceles.

The Hammond 'Atlas of the Bible Lands' satisfies every imaginable objective I may have for an aid to Bible study. This is especially true since the book is published by people who understand people who use maps.
For starters, it includes historical maps from the very earlist period where an event in the Bible can be associated with a real historical location through the travels of Jesus' apostles, plus a map of modern Palestine.
Then, like every other serious atlas, the volume includes a wide range of maps which go beyond the familiar political boundaries. For example, it includes serious physical maps of Palestine, as well as maps of climate and economic centers.
Lastly, the volume includes a map of the entire Roman Empire (albeit with some important corners of the British Isles left off). While Christianity may not have reached Britannia or Hispania in the lifetimes of Peter, Paul, or the other early Apostles, it is certainly important to have the entire empire when reading New Testament and early Church Father writings.
The very best aspect of the volume is the modest cost for this marvelous volume. I've seen other books on this subject and none come close. I only wish there were some way of acquiring wall hanging sized blowups of some of the maps.

This book has excellent and colorful maps plus descriptions of the Bible lands. The maps and information are so attractive that they inspire the reader to spend time with them. I teach a course entitled INTRODUCTION TO THE OLD TESTAMENT and this book is a required text. Reading the Old Testament is more easily understood as the locations and happenings are highlighted in this book.

For the price this atlas out ranks the others by far. Most of the time it provides the exact map/information I need for my study. I have several others that I have picked up through seminary and later but this is the one I still turn to. It is a classic that is worth every penny.
Great Beginner Bible Atlas.......2000-06-21
The beauty of this book is its simplicity. Unlike some Bible atlases, this one does not have a great deal of text to sift through; just nice, easy-to-read maps.
There are also captioned pictures which relate to whichever map is on the page. The captions are simple and the photos are interesting.
Towards the end of the book, there are a few helpful charts, such as a Time Chart of Bible History, one on the Kings of Judah and Israel, The House of the Maccabees and Hasmoneans, as well as the family tree of the herodic dynasty.
This book would serve a new student of the Bible (or a younger student...grade school through high school) very well. It gives you a fair amount to information in a non-stifling style. It's easily well worth the affordable price.

The emergence in the nineteenth century of a new political and territorial entity - Canada - is dramatically portrayed in this book. Through breathtaking cartography it vividly captures the great economic and social events that made possible the successful birth of a huge new country.
The Land Transformed reveals how a thinly populated and economically limited group of colonies in 1800 came together to become the Canada of the 1890s. The profound revolution was the transformation of the land: forest and grassland gave way to farmland, native populations were moved onto reservations, railways and telegraph tied together widely separated communities; urban commercial centres grew. At the end of the century Canada was recognizable as one of the world's major countries, stretching across a continent, comfortably at home in the world of railways, factories, and well-developed agriculture.
The first part of the volume, 'Extending the Frontier: Settlement to Mid-Century,' describes the growth of the population and the economy in the first half of the century. Maps, graphs, charts, and paintings are used with imagination and clarity to portray the spread of settlement, based on immigration and an accelerated use of resources, the most important of which was land. By the 1850s a dominant agriculture was joined to a productive timber trade as the country's engine of growth.
Part II, 'Building a Nation,' covers the country's 'coming of age.'
