Book Description
A loyal Stormtrooper, thwarted by the very bureaucracy which he serves, struggles to track down a Rebel saboteur on board the Death Star in the days and hours before the fateful Rebel attack. Darth Vader, the sole survivor of the explosion of the Death Star, crash lands on a primitive world where savagery is the key to survival. A young Imperial lieutenant learns all service comes at a price when his small company of Stormtroopers is attacked by thousands of angry aliens. Assassins vow revenge on the man responsible for killing their families - the Dark Lord, Darth Vader. Four compelling tales, all told from the point of view of the major villains of the Star Wars galaxy - the Imperials. But, as these stories show, even the "bad guys" are no strangers to loyalty, honor, and sacrifice!
Customer Reviews:
Great art work wasted on unimaginative writing .......2006-05-27
It's tough being asked to make fantasy Nazi's into regular Joes, or even heroic Joes, so even if I can't work up too much sympathy for the troops that protect the universe by enslaving it, I can image what a nightmare it might have been for some of these writers to get their assignments from Dark Horse. Their charge - convince you that the bad guys, the guys who keep the Emperor's machine running day-to-day, are, well, just like you and me, people with a job to do.
Perhaps the writer who has it easiest is Paul Alden, who has only to have Vader battle a pack of wild hyenas. You will recall that when the first Death Star exploded, Vader was spinning off into space. With a damaged ship and not too many options for pulling into the nearest service station, he manages to crash on a planet mostly empty of sentient life. There's plenty of fauna about, though, and the Dark Lord has to fight his way through them to an Imperial listening post. Thanks to artist Raul Trevino's fine work, Alden's willingness to step out of the way, and the almost complete absence of politics, "The Savage Heart" is sharp and quick-paced, ending with a touch of wry humor.
In comparison, the rest of the work in this volume is verbose, implausible, or, as in "Target: Vader," simply unremarkable. The story starts five months after Yavin with the Dark Lord checking in om one of his Bothan contacts for information on Alliance bases and locations. Lying in wait is a cabal Falleen assassins; what becomes of them is hardly a surprise. Hacking and slashing is provided by one of Star Wars better artists, Brian Ching, whose talents are fairly squandered on a story by Ron Marz that adds little to the lore of the EU and in which we learn even less about Vader (except that he cannot be placated with offers of Naboo slave girls).
Writer Jeremy Barlow takes a stab in "What Sin Loyalty?" at how the average Imperial deals with the daily drudgery of coercion, murder, enslavement, and theft. With only a few pages to deal with these questions, Barlow has to settle for stating things quite simply, that the universe would be an anarchic free-for-all without the Emperor's firm and ruthless control. The message is blunted somewhat by having it delivered by a Stormtrooper, a clone who comes essentially ideologically hardwired. But the deathbed scene of a (non-clone) Imperial gives Barlow a chance to show us a repentant officer, one who until his last moments was unable to express any doubt over the horrible things he did in the name of the Empire. Regrettably, Barlow's work is fairly ruined at story's end when the first person narrative provided by the Stormtrooper continues right up until the moment of his immolation on the Death Star, leaving us to wonder - how did his account survive?
Last (and perhaps least) is the three-part "To the Last Man," the incredulous tale of Lt Janek Sunber. A hick from the galactic sticks, Sunber is the guy Luke Skywalker might have been if he had made it to the academy, the Jefferson Smith of Imperial officers, a low-ranking lieutenant from the James Stewart school of naïve optimism whose Forest Gump-like mantra is "All Duty is Sacrifice." Sunber's not the kind of guy to worry about imperialism, slavery, or genocide. He's got a job to do and there's great value in hard work. On assignment to the Jungle planet Maridun, Sunber chips in to help the troops do field work, much to the horror and disgust of his socially superior fellow officers. When the Imperial forces are attacked, Sunber knows best how to position the troops. When the fighting gets tough, Sunber is the man with the plan. When the general lies dying, Sunber's the man the general summons and to whom he hands off command. And in the end, [SPOILER] Sunber's the man who treats with the aliens to end the war in a jaw-droppingly hackneyed climax in which the aliens reveal that the fighting has been arranged to test the worthiness of the Imperial interlopers. [END SPOILER] The only redeeming thing about "To the Last Man" is the art, provided here by Davide Fabbri and Christian Dalla Vecchia, who do a fantastic job bringing to life a new alien species and in conveying the movement of troops in battle. It's too bad these two got stuck working on this story, which besides being unrealistic to the point of absurdity is also - particularly in its final chapter - overwritten, with too many florid passages telling us what things are like instead of showing us, slowing down battle scenes that should move at a quicker pace.
Skip this book. For completists only.

Extremely good stories.......2005-07-06
I've read Dark Empire 1 and 2, Mara Jade: By the Empire's Hand, and the first four Clone Wars trade paperbacks, and this beats all of them. (Though Clone Wars #3 comes close.) Anyways, this volume contains the issues 13 and 14, as well as 16-19, for a total of 6 issues. #15 is in Volume 2. These stories range from great to outstanding, but if you want to read about main characters other than Vader, space battles, or Jedi, than look elsewhere.
Here's a brief overview:
What Sin Loyalty? is about a stormtrooper on the Death Star who tries to unravel a plot to kill his commanding officer. It's a satisfying story that deals with the morality of the Rebellion.
The Savage Heart is about Vader getting back to Coruscant from the blown up Death Star. Some aspects of the plot were a little bizarre, but it's a good story with decent characters.
To the Last Man, originally 3 issues, is an exceptionally good work of military science fiction. It deals with one lieutenant who must lead his troops through a desperate struggle against a superior alien force. It has all the definitive qualities of comradery, sacrifice, and duty. There's also lot's of great combat.
Target: Vader had a decent plot, but the story has fantastic insight into Vader's character. It really works after seeing Episode 3. This is definitely a worthwhile story.
Anyways, this is a great comic, definitely worth getting.

LOL! No seriously though, if you like Star Wars movies at all you'll really like this book. It lets you see a different side of Darth Vader and also lets you see the Empire from a completely different perspective. If you don't buy it, at least go to book store or library and read it. It will change your perspective on the Empire as will the other two books before it.
The people who are the soldiers that we see get blasted on screen aren't that different from you and I (the characters they play I mean) and neither is Darth Vader, except for his overwhelming powers. But absolute power corrupts absolutely (in humans anyway).

Book Description
The first ever colossal miniature for the Star Wars Miniatures game.
The AT-AT Walker, a legendary and recognizable
Star Wars “character”, will be the largest
Star Wars Miniature created by Wizards of the Coast. Over 12 inches tall, this figure could be pivotal in defeating an opponent’s rebel army. This miniature will be highly sought after by both collectors and players. The package components consist of a 2-sided battle grid, damage counters, and an 8-page scenario booklet.

Looks nice, but that's all.......2007-02-19
The AT-AT looks great on a shelf, but as far as a supplement to the Star Wars Miniatures game, it is lacking.
Wait until they can't sell them then snatch them up for less.
Overall, a great expansion set.......2007-01-16
"Universe" is the fourth expansion set in the Star Wars Miniatures Universe, which started with the Rebel Storm Starter set back in September, 2004 (see more about the minis game itself in my addendum below). There are 60 different figures in this set. These are the first "huge packs," so each booster comes with seven durable, pre-painted figures (including one rare OR one very rare figure), one of which will be a large OR very large figure.
The first thing I look for in any expansion set are how many characters I recognize from the movies (vs. those that appeared only in the books). I am particularly interested in figures from the original trilogy, and am happy to say there are at lest 22 figures from the original trilogy in this set. Most are simply more powerful versions of earlier figures (for example, Lando Calrissian Rebel Hero, Darth Vader Jedi Hunter, Admiral Ackbar, Chewbacca Rebel Hero, Han Solo Rebel Hero, Luke Skywalker on Tauntaun, Princess Leia Rebel Hero, and Luke Skywalker, Jedi Master), but some have never been released before (for example, B'omarr Monk, Lobot, Nien Nunb, Wedge Antilles, and Rancor). Notably, there are even a couple of great new common and uncommon figures from the original trilogy in this set (for example, Gonk Power Droid and especially the Stormtrooper Commander).
Further, though I am not a big fan of the prequel, there are several figures from these movies as well (say 5-10 - though none of them stood out as particularly amazing/useful). The rest are either from the books (including some that are very powerful), or generic/minor characters that I have never seen or heard of before (some of which are also pretty good and may be particularly useful in the Star Wars RPG).
In sum (and as of the time this review was written), this is perhaps the second best expansion set for those interested in the original trilogy since Rebel Storm was first released in 2004 (with the Bounty Hunters expansion set being the best in this regard). Those who like the Star Wars minis game and those who use the figures for the Star Wars RPG will likely be very happy with this set.
ADDENDUM: (Please note that I include this addendum at the end of all my Star Wars minis reviews, so if you've read it before, there is no need to read it again.) If you want to play the Star Wars minis game as it was designed to be played, it is best to have at least one starter (each starter comes with game instructions, a map, a D20, terrain tiles that are very helpful and add great variety to the game, and more). I like the Rebel Storm Starter the best because it's from the classic era/trilogy, but the Clone Strike and Revenge of the Sith starters from the newer movies will also work. If you don't want to invest in a starter, you can also get one of the three "Ultimate Missions" books, as each comes with a double sided map and a few smaller terrain tiles (again, I like the Rebel Strom Ultimate Missions book the best because it is also from the classic era/trilogy). Or, you can buy the "Attack on Endor" scenario pack, which comes with TWO double sided maps (in addition to a scaled AT-ST that is fully usable in play). The main point here is that you'll need some type of map/grid. If you don't want to buy a Star Wars one, generic ones are also available at most gaming stores (you can use your imagination to set the scene, or draw terrain with an erasable marker right on the grid). Of course, the minis are also useful for the roleplaying game (RPG) - in which case you may not need a starter or map, but will likely need the "Core Rulebook" instead. Finally, they are just fun to collect for those who like all things Star Wars!
AT-AT review.......2006-03-21
The AT-AT is a must have for any Star Wars Miniatures Fan. This thing is huge! It is highly detailed, and is made of rigid plastic so it is much more durable than the standard mini. I am very pleased.
Great game, good pieces, nice value.......2006-03-15
This game is very enjoyabale. It takes about an hour to play a round with the standard rules. The pieces are pretty indestructable. They are pre-painted so the out-of-the box time to play time is low
As collectibles, many of the pieces are worth a lot right out of the box. Each box is a suprise as to what you will find. A decent collectible if you want something harder to damage than cards, but still want to be able to play with the collectible item (as opposed to say, coins)
Star Wars Miniatures At-At - SUPERB!!!.......2006-02-23
I was very impressed at the quality and detail of this model.
It's fantastic and was delivered to me on time and at half the price I could buy it for in the UK...thank you Amazon.com

Slightly More Challenging than the First.......2001-08-17
As I said in "Imperial Stars, the Stars at War", this series is an investigation of the probably future governments that we will take with us into Space. In this volume, which is also a collection of short Sci-Fi stories and essays, he not only continues his attack on the Social Sciences, he attempts to reason which would be the government, one of freedom or one of tyrrany.
So which will it be? He highlights the strengths and weaknesses of both, and his conclusion is that initially it will be empire, and eventually it will be republic.
I regret to say that there are no startling new breakthroughs in this book like the Pournelle Chart in the first volume, but the difference in perspective is worth it. The highlight of this one is the discussion of Tribesman, Barbarian, and Civilization as three evolved stages of government. To understand it, you must read it.
I thank Jerry Pournelle for this wonderful series.

Politics, philosophy and a few exploding spaceships........2005-06-02
I'd only disagree with the previous reviewer on one point--Dr Pournelle has degrees in engineering, psychology AND political science. He's served as a presidential space policy advisor, worked in the aerospace industry, for NASA, as deputy mayor of LA, as editor for BYTE Magazine and as an artillery officer. Some of his treatises are required reading at the US military academies.
Yet in works like this, Dr Pournelle makes his points in an interesting and entertaining fashion. His introductions, comments and essays are not dry, but very readable. They're clear but in depth. I've learned a great amount from Dr Pournelle, and continue to do so on his site, with its in depth analysis of environmental, space, energy and political issues. What can you say about the man who invented blogging back before the net, when BBSes were the only computer medium?
The tone of this series is dark, but with an optimistic edge. The tales can be cautionary, inspiring and just plain fun. Most have a military flavor, with imagery sharp and bright. Then there's the occasional Kipling thrown in, that shows how the same problems persist in each society, from frontier to republic to empire.
There are some forgotten gems and classic works in this anthology. If you're serious about human development, the military or science fiction, you should have this and the others in the series on your bookshelf, and re-read them every few months.
Not at all what one would expect.......2001-08-14
I have seldom enjoyed a work as much as I have this one. This book, while presented from the format of Science Fiction, is actually an analysis of what the government of the future would be like, because where Man goes, so goes Government.
In this first book, he spends most of his time trying to settle the question of war and empire, showing how he believes that each of these would be inevitable in the future.
Interspersed through the many science fiction short stories are essays and analyses. One could call it basic Sociology or Political Science, except that he would consider it an insult to compare him to the Social Sciences, another topic he blasts in his book, coming from both an Engineering background and a Science Fiction background.
What makes this book most valuable is one short essay buried near the rear about the Pournelle Political Science Chart, in an essay about how the Social Sciences are not Scientific. The analysis of government beliefs on a rather unique two dimensional matrix (and no, it is not the Nolan chart) is quite a startling and innovative new idea, worth the price of the book alone.
All this is in the first book alone. There is now way I could rate this lower that 5 stars.

When the Future Empires Fall.......2001-09-11
The first book in this series of three showed how in the future there will be Government, of various sorts. The second examined the conflict between the types of government, with Republics fighting Empires. Third in the series, this book does drag a little at times, but details how and why future empires are likely to fall.
No, they do not fall lightly or easily, with the sole exception of the graceful fall of the British Empire, and when they do fall, civilization tends to revert to barbarism.
What would make an empire fall? Many factors, each self correctable to the unbaised observer, but with those in power never being or listening to said observer.
One of the essays, on the Vietnam War, does drag a little, and that is the only thing that slows down what is otherwise an excellent read.

Good resource........1999-10-27
This book is best used in conjunction with the Rebel Handbook and the Star Wars Sourcebook. Between the three of them most information is covered. (maybe this one DOESN'T cover TIE stats, but there's a nice chart in the Sourcebook that has all the different starcraft lined up.) Good flavor. Excellent illustrations, in words and in pictures. I recommend this book the the serious Star Wars fan.
A shame its out of print.......1999-07-16
This book is great. It was definetly mad efor the star wars fan. The problem is its out of print :( I got my copy ,after finding it listed here,in a large book store under roleplaying. It not just for roleplaying though. So go get it if you the avid fan or just the average day fan.If you like the Empire youll love this book.Statsd on TIES or not.
An in-depth look at the Empire.......1999-03-14
Very detailed, but lacks: Walker info & stats; TIE info & stats; Sandtrooper info & stats; Timeline; Details of smaller Imperial ships; Costs for Imperial ships & equipment (sometimes useful).
Excellent book but could have more........1998-08-26
Excellent book but leaves out info on ships like Imperial Frigate and Corvettes that the Imperials used also along with the ships in the book. They also could have put in a better rank insignias system in the book showing the ranks but otherwise Really Good.
Very good and descriptive.......1997-03-17
It is very detailed but lacks several key points such as stats for TIE's and imperial walkers. Weapon ammo would be nice. Good starship section

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
