3 out of 5 stars Good content, bad writing.......2007-02-11

Based on content and organization, it's good, maybe really good. But the poor writing makes it hard to read. It's also kind of expensive.

I was new to GIS design and implementation, so I can't compare this to what else is out there on these topics. I do have some experience with databases and GIS software, so I'm not that green to the concepts. I'm a thorough reader and like for reading to flow, especially when it's explaining something techy. This book has many punctuation errors (e.g. a period where a comma should be), uses the wrong word (e.g. their for there, or where for were), uses the wrong form of the verb "is", uses plural where it's really singular, etc. Sometimes a sentence is just worded in a way that makes it difficult to follow.

I have learned a lot about design and implementation of GIS with this book. I just wish it would have been less taxing to get through.

    Book Description

The relatively independent fields of risk analysis need drawing together in a single framework, identifying the reasoning underlying the seemingly disparate approaches and the gains to be had by bringing them together. Risk perception is the product of many factors in our lives, and cultural differences can have a significant impact on how we view risk and seek to control it. Risk management involves the decision maker selecting among alternative options. The book here focuses on facility risk management and human-centred risk management. Detailed information is provided on all three of these concepts; further definition is given to facility-centred and human-centred approaches to risk analysis and management.

Part II of the book gives extensive information on the legacies, risk perception, and tools for analyzing that risk. Part III presents detailed information on risk assessment programmes and methodologies, and Part IV provides details of future activities.

    Book Description

Journey Song is a compelling collection of American Indian spiritual teachings woven into an ancient, yet excitingly new, understanding of the meaning of life. Journey Song uses these ancient teachings, legends, and anecdotes extensively in order to illustrate the truth of Oneness at work within our daily lives.

American Indians have proven themselves successful stewards of the earth for at least ten thousand years. Their Life Way, their spirituality, was completely misunderstood by their European conquerors who labeled them "savages" and "pagans." This allowed our dominant society to consider itself a superior race of human beings, and provided the excuse needed to take native lands and virutlaly exterminate our red brothers and sisters. If you take the time to sudy and listen, however, you will learn that American Indians were actually "unitheists". But there was no European word to describe their philosophy until the book Journey Song.

American Indians understand that We are all One, and that Great Spirit/God is everywhere and in all things. This seemingly simple answer embraces even deeper truths; that all evil will eventually cease to exist and that love, all powerful, will triumph -- presaging our ability to save both ourselves and the earth. This is the message of Journey Song.

This book is a must!! I've read it over and over again until the cover is marked. I know the author personally and her soul truely shines thru her work!!!

5 out of 5 stars Find a new perspective on yourself and the world around you........1999-06-19

What I love most about this book is the ability to interpret and experience it on so many different levels. And like all "keepers," everytime I read it I find a different point of view or see a passage on a new "level."

I also really appreciate the almost "zen" approach, if you will, and the possibility of encompassing your entire being in one simple truthful and loving philosophy. Perspective is everything.

This is definitely a book to keep on hand under your bedside table for spontaneous reference and to fall back on again and again!

True brilliance should never be complicated.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-09-07

This is an excellent book. One of a series of 4 books. This first one is alittle out of date now, but it is still a good read. The other are excellent. They all deal with a particular family's climb to the stars. Against internal and external politics. Along the way the meet various alien races and explore the ways human and alien can help and hurt each other.

This book probably does the best job of all the E:FC books so far at portraying the characters and feel of the TV show. The Taelons characterizations are bang on. Lots of references to the TV show, especially the episode "Cloister". I like the authors explanations of minor details of the show. Like the Taelons hand gestures and why protectors frequently wear jackets. The story keeps you guessing right up to the end. Nice job blending Human and Taelon history. I liked the ending, just like the TV show. Leaves you with something to think about. Remains true to the spirit of the show. Just because the Taelons are powerful, Humans can be capable of something that they aren't. My one and only complaint would be that the chapters about the Taelons were too short! More like this please! =D

5 out of 5 stars strong speculative fiction.......2002-06-26

Archeologist Waneta Young uncovers a strange looking red crystal infixed inside a piece of pottery found at a dig on a sacred mountain in the Eastern Cherokee Nation. The crystal contains an ancient destructive power guarded by anointed Cherokee shamans against those who will abuse the frightful force.

However, the human freedom resistance and the competing Taelon factions learn of the find and each struggles to take control of the red crystal. Each group assumes possession means world domination. However, unleashing the genie from the bottle may prove more dangerous and deadly than any of the competitors realize as only the Cherokee Nation understand this doomsday machine that the red crystal contains. Emancipated from the crystal prison will mean the end of the world unless Waneta the chosen one retains control of a force that none of the triad will be able to direct.

This reviewer planned to invoke the fifty-page rule expecting to waste a half an hour reading GENE RODDENBERRY'S EARTH: FINAL CONFLICT: LEGACY because long running TV series adaptations into novels usually lose steam after a few novels. However, instead this reviewer finished a great tale in one sitting. Glenn R. Sixbury does the impossible of adhering to the nature of the TV cast while enhancing their known personality quirks and traits (Zo'or's depiction is amazing) yet provides freshness with a strong tale that includes the trifecta conflict and a deep look into Cherokee mythos. Fans of the series will relish this powerful action-packed tale while those not familiar will enjoy a strong speculative fiction novel.

5 out of 5 stars Legacy lives up to potential.......2002-06-19

I admit, I don't read media tie-ins very often. Since I like the Earth Final Conflict series---particularly the earlier seasons-I decided to take a chance on Glenn Sixbury's Legacy. To my delight, I discovered that Sixbury not only stays true to the characters, he gives them depth that is not apparent in a one-hour television show. He expands on the best features of the Earth Final Conflict series and adds a few twists of his own.

In particular, I found his scenes between Da'an and Zo'or riveting. Sixbury has captured the Taelon movements perfectly. His interpretations of their hand motions, their expressions, and their political machinations are fascinating and believable.

The plot is unique, as well. The story centers around Archeologist Waneta Long and her discovery of an ancient Cherokee artifact. It quickly becomes apparent that this artifact is of interest to the Taelons and therefore to the resistence movement, as well. Unknowingly, Waneta becomes a pawn in the three-sided struggles between the opposing Taelon factions and the human resistence movement.

Though she is not part of the series, I found Long to be a sympathetic character in a captivating situation. Sixbury's use of Cherokee mythology and mysticism dovetails nicely with Taelon "history." Overall, Glenn Sixbury's Legacy is a fun read, both for fans of the show and those who have never seen it before.

    Book Description

Anticipating the great amount of interest in Tolkien's writings due in part to the major theatrical movie release in late Fall on his classic The Lord of the Rings, this highly readable collection of writings celebrates J.R.R.Tolkien's great literary legacy and the spiritual values that undergird his imaginary Middle-earth. Tolkien: A Celebration includes personal recollections by George Sayer and Walter Hooper, and many fascinating pieces by authors such as James Schall, S.J., Stratford Caldecott and Stephen Lawhead, exploring the threads of inspiration and purpose in his major works. These dip into subjects such as The Sense of Time in Lord of the Rings, Tolkien: Master of Middle-earth, and Tolkien, Lewis and Christian Myth.

Fourteen writers contributed to this insightful work on Tolkien, and it will be much-treasured by those who regard him as a literary hero.

3 out of 5 stars Some good essays.......2003-01-18

Some of these esays are really interesting, infact most of them are good. There are some really boring as well. This is light reading about Tolkein from a mostly Catholic perspective. If you want heavy duty scholarship, this isn't the book, but if you want something to read with the morning coffee I really recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing new to say...........2001-09-03

Tolkien scholarship, on the whole, tends to be quite weak. There's a lot of reasons for that, but this isn't really the place to go into them. However, I will say that this collection of essays is no exception to the rule. "Tolkien: A Celebration" consists of 15 essays by different authors, edited by Joseph Pearce (author of another mediocre book on Tolkien). For the most part, the essays are non-scholarly-- they are more like short, off-the-cuff, reflections than serious scholarly analysis.

Most of the essays deal in some way with the "religious" aspects of Tolkien's fiction-- and most of those approach it from a specifically Roman Catholic persepctive. This is a legitimate subject to write about, of course, but it's been done to death before (and better!) by Carpenter, by Kocher, by Kilby, by Flieger, and by a host of other critics. These essays really don't add anything new to the body of Tolkien scholarship-- no new ideas, no new interpretations, no new evidence.

The same is true for most of the non-religious-themed essays as well. Patrick Curry's "Modernity in Middle-Earth", for example, is basically a six-page summary of his own book on the subject, while Elwin Fairburn's "A Mythology for England" is essentially a recap of points that have been made again and again and again by previous scholars (especially Carpenter, and even more Jane Chance who wrote a whole book called "Tolkien's Art: A Mythology for England").

In truth, the only two items of genuine interest here are the "personal reminscences" by George Sayer and Walter Hooper, who talk abou their experiences meeting Tolkien, working with him, etc., They're not rigorous scholarship,
nor do they present a radically different picture of the man than Grotta-Kurska's and Carpenter's biographies draw, but they do offer up a few worthy anecdotes. Still, they're hardly essential reading for either the Tolkien scholar or fan.

This isn't, by far, the wost book on Tolkien ever published, but it's not one of the better ones-- and it really doesn't have anything new to add to the critical legacy of Tolkien scholarship.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Insightful.......2001-01-05

A wonderfully insightful look at the themes, values and processes behind Tolkien's created world.

5 out of 5 stars And the white tree flowered in the garden of Gondor. . .This.......2000-05-18

This book presents an excellent interpretation of the works of J.R.R. Tolkein. It adds an interesting prespective on his stories, as well as his life. This is a must have for any true Tolien fan! Peace.

Bruce Chatwin's The Songlines brought the magic of Australian Aboriginal dreamtime to an audience far beyond the shores of the great island continent. Now Anna Voigt and Nevill Drury re-create this complex spirituality through photographs and accounts of ritual and social life in Wisdom from the Earth. The photographs jump off the pages: Uluru (Ayers Rock), the sacred convergence of the songlines, "a huge red monolith" abruptly rising 400 meters above the land; painted women singing the ancient myths; pointillist paintings of the exploits of the spirit ancestors; men dancing in ceremonial regalia; wildlife and sites along seemingly barren landscapes, each with its own story and place in the scheme of life. The text fleshes out the photographs, detailing dreamtime events, describing nonsecret ceremonies and their roles in Aboriginal life, and recording interviews with elders. The effect is an eye-opening glimpse of the rich and enduring traditions of Aboriginal spirituality. --Brian Bruya

5 out of 5 stars The Nuclear Solution.......2000-07-16

In the year 2047, earth has been ravaged by a limited nuclear war and is now divided between Pan America and the Sino Soviet power bloc.

But in space there is a tyrant with the power to overcome both or shift the balance of power in either direction. On earth there is an ancient anit-war leader with psi vision of a planet linked to ours.

But full scale nuclear war could destroy both before the path to human salvation is found.

A thought provoking book that looks at human politics and human folly that could be our future.

Why in the world would you cook canned vegetables for eight hours? (Why would you cook with canned vegetables at all?) Yuck!

          5 out of 5 stars I Love This CookBook.......2007-07-12

I am always eager to try new cookbooks, particularly ones that have simple and easy to follow recipes. This cookbook fits the bill perfectly. The recipes are collected from cooks all over and are for use with a crockpot/slow cooker. I have tried about a dozen different recipes so far and have only found one that I didn't care for.

As a rule, there are usually 2 or 3 variations for any given type of recipe, so if one doesn't have exactly the ingredients that would be hit with your palate then there are others with slight changes that may be more appealing.

The best feature for me is that each recipe has the nuitritional information, which allows for easy counting of calories, etc. when you are on a weight loss program.

I have both the "Fix It and Forget It Lightly" and the original "Fix It and Forget It" books and wouldn't give them up for anything. They are definitely worth the investment for any serious cook.

3 out of 5 stars Same old recipes.......2007-05-12

I expected more original recipes. These are recipes I could have gotten from any cookbook.

1 out of 5 stars Did they even test these recipes first?.......2007-04-16

I have a family of five with busy schedules of sports, scouts, church activities, etc., etc. I was excited to get this cookbook so we'd stop eating on the go so much. Sound familiar?

I started trying a new recipe week after week. Every recipe was awful! Most of the recipes were bland or mushy. Which reminds me...

Beware of any of the recipes that call for rice. It will be overcooked. I guess I should have known that, but yuck! Just in case you're like me and didn't know: Rice turns to mush in a crockpot!

I hate to bad mouth this book so bad, but I wasted money buying the book and money buying the food for the recipes that I just ended up throwing out....several times. I tried mostly shrimp or chicken recipes.

Maybe I chose the wrong recipes? But after a couple of months, you would think I'd hit a winner.
