The authors call it "practical magic"--the enchantment that occurs when couples act upon their highest intentions and deepest love. Suddenly creativity and humor spill upon every page of life; intimacy is a given instead of a task; accountability and responsibility are freedoms rather than burdens. But getting to this magical state of being is the problem. This book has all the right spells. Practical issues such as sex, aging, money, fights, and infidelity are all examined through the lens of a conscious heart. Without once faltering into surface solutions or cosmetic improvements, these world-renowned couples' therapists explore the seven choices that transform relationships from the inside out.

Book Description

Kathlyn and Gay Hendricks are two of today's foremost relationship experts. Their bestselling book Conscious Loving has already become essential reading for tens of thousands of couples. Now, in The Conscious Heart, they identify the seven commitments that can transform from the inside out.

These seven simple--but powerful--choices enable couples to:

Use conflict to create greater understanding
Overcome the fears and defenses that block intimacy
Resolve struggles for control
Increase generosity and appreciation
Deepen passion, commitment, and aliveness
Release the creativity of each partner

Filled with numerous true-life stories--including how the authors survived and grew from their own midlife marital crisis-- The Conscious Heart is an inspiring and instructive affirmation of the ultimate power of love.

2 out of 5 stars Consciously Shelving This One.......2005-12-20

While I rated both "Conscious Living" and "Conscious Loving" by the same authors, the Hendricks's, with a very enthused 5 star rating, subsequently ordering several of their books, I have stepped back with my endorsement after reading "Conscious Heart." This particular book does not detract from the basic message of their work in general with a "conscious approach," so to speak, to life and our various relationships, romantic or otherwise. I still hold to that. The premise is sound. But "Conscious Heart" has little new to offer; indeed, what is new is a section that rather made me wince.

I am all flags and hurrah banners for a commitment to honesty - to self and to others. Speaking one's feelings aloud, bringing them into the light for full understanding, using that understanding to build intimacy in a romantic relationship but increased efficiency in a work relationship, yes, all of that makes solid good sense to me. But I am also a believer in balance. Often, too much of a good thing becomes, well, not so good. It is possible to exaggerate this idea to the point of being obnoxious and unnecessarily cruel.

Example: The Hendricks couple recount an incident in their marriage that tested their commitment and their honesty. Gay Hendricks, in his own retelling, goes through a scene of seduction that is handled with, to me, absurdity. While I agree with their commitment to tell each other when they might be in danger of serious straying, teetering on the boundaries of infidelity, so that they might work it out together -- I am not at all convinced that this incident, as it is described in the book, is handled in a way that even a reasonably committed couple could, or should, endure. Gay spots a younger woman across a dance floor, someone both he and wife Kathlyn know and trust, but suddenly he sees this woman in a different light. How this temporary desire for another woman is handled between the three of them tests my limits of understanding. The marriage endures -- but my patience and empathy do not. Not only is the disclosure unnecessary, but the concept of commitment seems to get lost in this threesome as they find their proper paths. The Hendricks are, after all, a married couple. Surely that stands for something. This "exploration" of Gay's temptation should have been cut off at the starting line, period.

I still recommend the Hendricks first two books with enthusiasm. Honesty is indeed the best policy. Being conscious of one's own motives and feelings is powerful. But I see no benefit to being subjected to my partner's ongoing stream of consciousness every time he feels a tingle in his tenders, not if it's a passing and momentary thought. Nor do I intend to subject him to same. That kind of banter is wearing, and I see no benefit from it. Not to be confused with open and full disclosure when infidelity, or danger of it, does indeed threaten a relationship. That is always necessary, no exceptions.

My recommendation is to read the Hendricks' first books, "Conscious Living" and "Conscious Loving." The basic idea of this kind of living, after all, is not complicated. I can't help feeling this newer addition was written merely as padding.

1 out of 5 stars Formula.......2005-04-02

I bought this book and read it; simply because the author is my ex-husband's therapist. As with many self help books it touches only the surface of the problem and does not delve deep into what is truly happening and with a persons thoughts, actions, patterns and integrity. People are not the same, we are all different, and therefore the thought processes are all different. What drives our actions and thoughts come from the many experiences we have had through our lives.

A formula might work for a short period of time, but the basic problem that needs to be addressed is not being addressed. Therefore the basic problem is being ignored. When it is ignored more often than not it will come up again and with a vengeance.

Many things that happen in our lives need to be recognized and understood with a professional who has "our" best interest at heart. This is not found in this book. The formula the Hendricks have put together is a quick fix with the problems still there and not dealt with. Therefore masking the issues.

So, I do not recommend this book. I do recommend seeking out professionals who will actually work one on one or in a group setting directly with you, dealing with your issues. This formula is just that a formula. None of our lives fit into a nice neat little box. But, it sure sells books.

5 out of 5 stars A Powerful and Fantastic Book.......2004-04-11

This extraordinary book will help you learn how to use conflict to create greater understanding; Overcome the fears and defenses that block intimacy; Resolve struggles for control; Increase generosity and appreciation; Deepen passion, commitment, and aliveness; and release the creativity of each partner. Kathlyn and Gay Hendricks have mastered the art of genuine friendship, support and intimacy within their own marriage, and provide the guidance many people need today to learn how to get it right.

Relationships take work. Nobody is perfect, and it is learning how to adjust to each person's imperfections while giving compassion and understanding at all times that are the pivotal keys to relationship success. If you want to learn how to be authentic and genuine, as well as how to communicate so a relationship can last in the inevitable face of human imperfections, then this is the book that will bring those answers to you. Outstanding and HIGHLY Recommended!

The authors walk their talk in their loving marriage.
This book opened my eyes to some missing pieces
of the puzzle and I have experienced profound shifts
in the relationship I have with my husband. The
information in the Hendricks' book has made me more
aware of feelings and more connected to creative
ways of transforming old patterns. My husband and
I realized that we had UNconscious commitments to
suffering that undermined our desire to be close!
We seem to have found a way to have a lot more fun!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2002-05-16

I just finished this book, and have been enlightened and tremendously inspired. Gay and Kathlyn Hendricks reveal a large number of their own personal experiences, and this makes the book really believable and valuable. They are relationship experts, but they share about their difficult times as well as the good ones. Their book, Conscious Loving, is a good book to read first, but this book does stand on its own well! Read this book if you want to develop the deepest possible relationship with your partner!

5 out of 5 stars The Chain of Destiny - One Link At a Time.......2007-03-08

Book Description: Suzannah Lightfoot was alone in the world, without a job or the means to support herself. So when Guy Bowers-Bentinck came to the rescue, she had to accept his help. Guy was hardly a knight in shining armor. He was arrogant, infuriating and bad tempered! He was also difficult to avoid. Even worse, he seemed to have assumed that Suzannah was about to join the ranks of all those females wanting to marry him. What was a girl to do? Make a run for it?

A sweet, heart-warming tale any Neels fan will love with the usual handsome Doctor and plain non-nurse in this case. Included are the usual misconceptions, false impressions, pretty but evil other female.

Except for her cat, Suzannah Lightfoot is alone in the world and determined to make it on her own. Guy Bowers-Bentinck was always there, assisting when she needed help. As soon as Suzannah cleared one hurdle, another appeared; and what ever fate threw at her, Guy cushioned the blow, at times unknown to her. He realized that each occurrence was a link in the chain of destiny. Guy was patient, even more determined to have her share his life, and by taking one link at a time they would be each other's destiny.

Guy and Suzannah appear in "The Mistletoe Kiss"

If you like Betty Neels and haven't read The Chain of Destiny yet then I strongly recommend that you get hold of a copy of this book and read all about Suzannah and Guy and hopefully you will find this book as captivating as I did. It's very truely a really good book!

Back Cover description: Alone in the world, without a job. That was Suzannah Lightfoot's unenviable position when Guy Bowers-Bentinck rescued her. She had to accept his help--though she didn't want to be beholden to such an infuriatingly arrogant man. "He's so tiresome and ill-tempered and impatient and he must hate the sight of me," Suzannah reflected as fate kept throwing them together. So it was just as well, she told herself, that she wasn't prepared to join the queue of females wanting to marry him...

Nice, pleasant Betty Neels story. The heroine and hero are typical, and likable. The story moves along, and all is well at the end. You can always count on Ms. Neels for a heart-warming story.

5 out of 5 stars You Don't Want to Miss this Book !!!.......2002-03-05

... This is absolutely one of my very favorite Betty Neels books ! The heroine is absolutely charming and lovely and the hero is a great big Teddy Bear. This book will reach right into your chest and squeeze your heart as you read it. One of my very favorite parts of the book is when the heroine, who raced back into a burning nursery to save a child, is sitting patiently with her burned arm quietly waiting for medical attention with a death grip on the carrier in which her big cat resides, thinking that she cannot let anyone take the cat out of her hand because he was all she had left in the world. I actually enjoy sobbing through this part every time because I know that I will be crying tears of happiness by the end of the story. What a wonderful gift Ms. Neels gave us when she shared this story with us !
This story will thrill loyal Neels fans and will enchant new readers. I promise. :)

5 out of 5 stars The Chain of Destiny.......2001-05-02

The heroine of this story is bound and determined to make it on her own. She (unwillingly) accepts help from others. She doesn't know that the man she secretly likes but thinks she doesn't have a chance of ever having a relationship with is there in the background keeping an eye on her. Betty Neels knows how to write a real romance novel based on friendship and trust and not just hormones.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books of short stories ever!.......1999-05-17

. . . Thom Lemmons is, to my mind, the best author ever at novelizing Biblical stories, and in Destiny By Choice he is at his best.
. . . I love short stories, and these are fantastic. Lemmons draws out perspectives on these historical characters' lives and personalities that are both thoughtful and insightful, and weaves a story in a masterful fashion. He covers characters from Adam to Zacchaeus, looking at issues such as how Deborah's husband felt about her being a judge, and viewing Lazarus' ressurection from two perspectives: Once by Thomas (seeing things as one of the group with Christ), and once from the perspective of Lazarus himself!
. . . If you get a chance, read this book. If you get a chance, own this book! It's fantastic!

I read this a long time ago so I won't have any detail to give other than to say that I liked the book and I think it is worthy of five stars.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-02-14

Schmookler can write. And much of it rings in like poetry. Along with his major book, The Parable of the Tribes, this is one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful glance at economic theory.......1999-03-01

Mr. Schmookler does an excellent job critiquing conventional economic theory of all stripes in this book. He shows the virtues and flaws of markets in good detail. The finest part of this work, though, in my opinion, was its fine rejection of libertarian economic ideas, especially since it utilizes the words of the libertarians themselves in doing so. Mr. Schmookler has obviously studied the views of numerous conventional and alternative economists and he does a fine job of explaining their views and problems with them. Just an excellent work - easily the finest text I've seen on economics yet. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars What if Alexander had...?.......2007-06-20

Melissa Scott has created an amazing book here. Historical fiction concerning Alexander the Great has recently captured my attention and I have been eagerly devouring anything to do with the subject. This book, unlike the previous ones I've read, takes Alexander on a different route. What if Alexander skipped India? What if he went towards Rome? What if he had an heir before he started his journey? All of these questions and more create an interesting and exciting story.

I would definitely recommend this story. I thought Melissa Scott captured Alexander the Great's character very well. Hephaistion also plays a large part, and even Bagoas is mentioned. I've never thought about what Rome would do if Alexander came calling, and the author has written a very plausible theory.

Again, I recommend this story. If you're interested in other historical fiction concerning Alexander the Great, I recommend Mary Renault's Alexander trilogy: Fire from Heaven, The Persian Boy, and Funeral Games. I also just finished Lord of the Two Lands by Judith Tarr and would recommend that if you'd like to see Alexander from an Egyptian point of view.

I'd also like to note that I was a bit put off by the cover art showing what looks like outer space. The majority of this story takes place in Alexander's time period. There are a few short chapters (only a few pages long) which are spread throughout the book, and take place far in the future; they deal with what is left with Alexander's empire. Not something I particularly cared for, but they did not take away from my enjoying the story.

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the story, but 2 for what history is in it..........2006-07-25

This is a very good read that looks at what may have happened should Alexander the Great turned away from his trip into India and instead returned to defeat rebels in Hellas, take Syracuse, subjugate southern Italy, defeat Rome and then sack Carthage. Included are interludes which show the resultant empire through the late 1500s (bce) including a scene from Alexandria-in-Orbit.

The 'turning point', which apparently is important in alternate histories, is not really stark. Scott has the Sacred Band with Alexander in Bactria, when they were crushed at Chaeronea, so that must have been where it began its turn.

All-in-all, a fine read with some big quibbles.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly good and well-researched.......2005-03-14

Absolutely terrific book. It could have gone on twice as long; since Scott only takes us through two of Alexander's "alternate" campaigns - against Rome and against Carthage - and doesn't show us the empire-building that must have followed. She is at ease with the military minutiae as well as with the different personalities of Alexander's Friends and Companions (it's amusing to hear about a Queen Cleopatra in the flash-forwards that show us the Empire down the centuries; she might be a Ptolemaic descendent, but through a different, clever history twist.) The only question I would have is that I'm not sure the sarissa was used by the cavalry - it must have made a very unwieldy weapon. You can tell how fine the research is, when quibbles become that detailed. (Also - wouldn't a Roman Consul need to be re-elected every year?) Much more important is how Melissa Scott manages to infuse every page with a terrific sense of suspense. We care and fear for her Alexander. Like Renault, she uses omens and visions woven into the perceptions of everyday life, with a good balance between the religious and the pragmatic. The Syrian seeresss, the augurs are all historical figures. Scott also creates perhaps the best adult Hephaestion in all Alexander fiction (since his point of view never appears in Mary Renault's The Persian Boy.) Nothing is explicitly written about the relationship between the king and his "best friend", but every clue is there if you know where to look; and even Bagoas briefly appears. This is a complete, unexpected sucess, and it's a shame it's out of print. I could do with sequels, both on the immediate aftermath of this book, and in the more distant future of the alternate Alexandrian empire; the glimpses we get are simply riveting. No Dark Ages and space travel by the 16th century AD? Bring it on!

5 out of 5 stars Praise for Melissa Scott's "alternative history" theory.......1997-10-13

I can only speculate as to the past-life Melissa Scott might have enjoyed as a loyal soldier-officer in the Macedonian army of the Great Alexander, but in what is arguably her best short work, A Choice Of Destinies, the reader is certainly swept into the passion, place, and time of this remarkable man, as Ms. Scott unfolds an epic tapestry that presents Alexander and his generals with a choice they never had in Antiquity: an opportunity to embark upon the trans-Oxus campaign, or face the formidable power of the early Roman republic. An engaging read for lovers of classical studies as well as the science fiction/fantasy enthusiast, A Choice Of Destinies will fire the imaginations of all who've ever wondered what might have been if we had only chosen to zig, instead of zagging, on the slippery slope of Time.

Every day of your life, you'll be busy making "choices," and some will affect you for the rest of your life. Tragically, some will also impact others throughout their lives as well. The sum of a lifetime of making personal "choices" will determine the kind of life and the quality of life that you will have literally "chosen" to live. Your "choices" will determine if your life will be like you're driving down a smooth, easy-to-travel, wide open freeway. Or, if your life will take you down a "Road from Hell," filled with devastating potholes and dangerous, off the main road detours! Weighing the consequences of "Choice A" over "Choice B" before you make your decision, is a whole new way of thinking for most young people. Because every "choice" has consequences! The alternative is running the risk of having to endure the bad consequences of impulsive "choices" for a long, long time. Make this new way of thinking your "Blueprint for Success in Life."

            Book Description

In her New York Times bestseller Everyday Italian, Giada De Laurentiis introduced us to the simple, fresh flavors of her native Italian cuisine. Now, America’s favorite Italian cook is back with a new batch of simple, delicious recipes geared toward family meals—Italian style.

These unpretentious and delicious meals are at the center of some of Giada’s warmest memories of sitting around the table with her family, passing bowls of wonderful food, and laughing over old times. Recipes for soups like Escarole and Bean and hearty sandwiches such as the classic Italian Muffuletta make casual, easy suppers, while one-pot dinners like Giada’s Chicken Vesuvio and Veal Stew with Cipollini Onions are just as simple but elegant enough for company. You’ll also find recipes for holiday favorites you’ll be tempted to make all year round, including Easter Pie, Turkey and Ciabatta Stuffing with Chestnuts and Pancetta, and Panettone Bread Pudding with Amaretto Sauce.

Giada’s Family Dinners celebrates the fun of family meals with photographs of Giada’s real-life family and friends as well as the wonderful dishes she shares with them in her kitchen. Suggested menus help you put together a family-style meal for any occasion, from informal to festive.

The heart of Italian cooking is the home, and Giada’s Family Dinners—full of fantastic recipes that require a minimum of fuss to prepare—invites you to treat everyone like a member of the family.

Nothing is more important than family. Bring yours to the table with Giada’s unpretentious, authentic, down-home Italian cooking!

            5 out of 5 stars Giada.......2007-09-23

Giada's food is excellent and usually pretty easy to make. Everything I have made has been at least an 8 out of 10... usually 10 out of 10!!!

            4 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-08-28

I'm a big fan of Giada and her recipes are really good, but I wish there were more pictures in this book. Other than that, this is a great book, and the recipes make up for the lack of pictures. It is worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious food that is easy to prepare.......2007-08-25

I received this book as a gift and have made half a dozen recipes so far. Every one of them has been delicious. The recipes are easy to prepare and the ingredients can be found in any supermarket. I have two small children and I can't run half way across the city in order to find young Thai coconuts or Spanish paprika. It is also nice that most of these meals can be thrown together quickly. I read the review where it was said that the writing is difficult to read. ??? I have no problem with the printing.

            4 out of 5 stars What's not to love?.......2007-08-15

Giada makes great meals that are easy to put together and make the cook look like a pro. Thanks for the help Giada! I ordered a second copy of Everyday Italian for my mom!

            5 out of 5 stars So Good!.......2007-08-11

I love this cook book. I haven't found a recipe we didn't like yet! I love all of her cook books, because the recipes are so easy but the end result is so mouth watering! I never knew it was so simple to cook with fresh ingredients!
