Texas A&M University professor H.W. Brands enhances his reputation as one of America's great popular historians with The Age of Gold, which tells the story of the California gold rush through rollicking narrative and intelligent analysis. "James Marshall's discovery of gold at Coloma [in 1848] turned out to be a seminal event in history, one of those rare moments that divide human existence into before and after," he writes. It launched "the most astonishing mass movement of people since the Crusades" and "helped initiate the modern era of American economic development." Brands describes how thousands of people from all over the world hazarded the journey, faced the scientific challenge of extracting precious metal from the earth, and finally struggled "to sink roots" where so many came merely "to strip the land." This book is something of a departure for Brands, who most recently has written biographies of Benjamin Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt (both of them excellent). Yet he tackles this new topic with confidence, telling dozens of stories about John Fremont, Leland Stanford, and less famous forty-niners. He concludes by describing why these tales have a national and even global importance. The Age of Gold is magnificent in its sweep, and not to be missed by fans of American history. --John Miller

Book Description

By the Author of the Bestselling Pulitzer Prize Finalist THE FIRST AMERICAN

THEY WENT WEST TO CHANGE THEIR LIVES AND IN THE BARGAIN THEY CHANGED THE WORLD. THIS IS THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE GOLD RUSH.

When gold was first discovered on the American River above Sutter's Fort in January 1848, California was sparsely populated frontier territory not yet ceded to the United States from Mexixo. The discovery triggered a massive influx as hundreds of thousands of people scrambled to California in search of riches, braving dangerous journeys across the Pacific, around Cape Horn, and through the Isthmus of Panama, as well as across America's vast, unsettled wilderness. Cities sprang up overnight, in response to the demand for supplies and services of all kinds. By 1850, California had become a state -- the fastest journey to statehood in U.S. history. It had also become a symbol of what America stood for and of where it was going.

In The Age of Gold, H. W. Brands explores the far-reaching implications of this pivotal point in U.S. history, weaving the politics of the times with the gripping stories of individuals that displays both the best and the worse of the American character. He discusses the national issues that exploded around the ratification of California's statehood, hastening the clouds that would lead to the Civil War. He tells the stories of the great fortunes made by such memorable figures as John and Jessie Fremont, Leland Stanford and George Hearst -- and of great fortunes lost by hundreds now forgotten by history. And he reveals the profound effect of the Gold Rush on the way Americans viewed their destinies, as the Puritan ethic of hard work and the gradual accumulation of worldly riches gave way to the notion of getting rich quickly.

4 out of 5 stars Great approach - lays out the impact of gold in California.......2007-04-10

If you are looking for a book about gold mining in the 1850s in California, this actually isn't it. The book spends very few pages talking about the actual mining of of gold. Instead, Brands takes a broader approach, looking at the historical impact of the discovery of gold in California and comes up with some very interesting insights.

The first thing Brands analyzes in Age of Gold is how the masses that flocked to California actually got there and where they came from. By using personal stories, Brands really brings the voyages and the hardships to life. He finds individuals who came to California from Chile, Australia, Europe and the Eastern U.S. and explains what was unique and common to each of their experiences. It's truly amazing to someone living in the age of commercial jets to read about the trails of getting from New York to San Francisco in 1850, no matter the choice of land or sea.

The second aspect of Brand's analysis is the culture of California in the 1850s and beyond. How the cities of the territory emptied on the discovery of gold and then filled up. Brands talks about the bar and brothel filled towns and settlements and the initial lack of women in California. He also points out how hard it was to set up a civil society with everyone in town simply for the purpose of getting rich quickly off of gold. The rapidity with which California goes through different phases is fascinating.

Brands then looks at how California's population explosion forced the statehood debate for California into the fore in Congress and ultimately forced the slavery debate into prominence again. Every state that came into the Union at this time was hotly contested as to whether it would be a free state or a slave state, with huge ramifications for the balance of free/slave power in congress.

The whole of the story is told through peoples' stories and experiences and has a very personal feel. Well worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting , anecdotal.......2007-02-09

Brands uses the experiences of the common forty niner and the likes of John Fremont, Leland Stanford and William T. Sherman to show how the gold rush eventually resulted in the demise of the old south and the actualization of the American dream. A good pace and extensive use of anecdotes made this an enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book...one of the best I've ever read.......2007-01-10

Truly the most fascinating historical account of the California Gold Rush. The author, through his research, has brought to life the troubles and tribulations of those who left their homes and families to come to the golden state. I highly recommend it. I am an historical researcher and writer and I have read alot of history books, and this one takes the prize.

5 out of 5 stars California Here We Come!.......2006-11-21

The Age of Gold
The California Gold Rush and the New American Dream.

H. W. Brands has writen a compelling and comprehensive account of the California gold rush starting with the discovery at Sutters Mill.
As the news spread from California, people from all over the world came to join in the mining. Others like John and Jessie Fremont were merely in the right place at the right time.
At first pans were used to sift the gold from the sand; later a cradle was used. Even later the "Long Tom,"--an improvement on the cradle--made even better returns.
Many people that moved to California during the gold rush stayed there for the remainder of their lives. Large towns such as San Francisco grew at unprecedented rates because of the influx of people that came by boat.
This written account of the gold rush by Brands illustrates America's continual quest for the perfect get rich quick scheme. Many people did make their fortunes, but many others didn't survive the journey, and still others died when they arrived, or died working in the mines. The Age of Gold tells of the good, and the bad; the honest, and the scoundrel in an enjoyable fashion.

5 out of 5 stars A great,great book.......2006-11-13

While this book has been out quite a while I read it after reading some of Brands other books. I personally feel this is his best book. By following the story of the famous and the obscure on their way to the California goldfields and their life thereafter he lends a truly human scope to the story. By looking at the affect of the gold rush on the immigrants from various countries as well as the native americans already there he tells the big picture. This is a must read for anyone with an interest in the settlement of California or the "taming" of the west. Excellent!!

Really just buy this book for your self and all your friends. Cal garrison is just so witty. Chase your dreams with attitude.

5 out of 5 stars truthful and heartfelt.......2005-03-07

The Old Girls' Book of Dreams is way different than Ms. Garrison's first book, The Old Girls' Book of Spells. If you're in the market for spells the latter is your best bet. But if you want inspiration, words of wisdom (and humor by the way) to get you pumped up for every Cross Quarter, The Old Girls' Book of Dreams is loaded with both.
For parts of it, I was in tears, because the author writes from her heart, and from her experience in an honest and truthful way. In other sections, she had me cracking up laughing because she talked about things that are the same for all of us with a wry smile and a sense of humor. Between the lines it's clear that this lady has been through it all. You feel like you're sitting down at the kitchen table with a wise old witch who's too real to put on airs. There's no pontificating or rhapsodizing about the Goddess here - The Old Girls' Book of Dreams is a down to earth affair.
What I got out of it in the end was a way to envision what I want out of my own life along with practical, workable ways to make those dreams manifest. You'll love the blank pages too. They will help you keep track of your self, and offer space to write down whatever it is that you're wanting and wishing for. Check this book out. It's a good one.

5 out of 5 stars A really awesome, wise, and funny book. Good for any woman,.......2003-10-15

The Old Girls'Book of Dreams was given to me by a friend of mine who's into Wicca. You can tell the author isn't one of those witches who plays at it. I got the feeling her whole life is about magic because when you read this you will see that there is magic in everything. Take the time to read the introduction closely. I found that the heart meditation she talks about is pretty incredible and the instructions for it are there. The rest of what she has to say about weaving your dreams and remaining tuned to the rhythm of the natural world is told with a fresh, honest perspective on it all. This is not one of those books that just rehashes the run of the mill affirmation stuff. If you're into astrology you'll get a fresh breeze blown up your skirt too. What the author has to say about the signs of the zodiac is woven into everything she has to say about witchcraft. I would recommend this book to anyone, whether they're into magic or not. And any age too. I'm buying a bunch of them to give away because it's THAT good. Besides, there's room to journal and plenty of space to sort out your own thoughts about things. The Old Girls' Book of Dreams is full of fresh wisdom. It shines a big light on the creation process and the whole experience of being a WOMAN!

5 out of 5 stars I Do: A Celebration of Love in Four Inspirational Novellas.......2000-04-09

I highly recommend this book to any reader who loves inspirational romances! Each story combines romance, love, relationships and Christian faith. "Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace" by Veda Boyd Jones conquers love at first sight and its consequences. In Sally Laity's "Once Upon a Dream" the fact that love is not just for the young is dealt with elegantly. "Something Old, Something New" by Yvonne Lehman proves that matchmakers know a thing about love. Louree Lough's "Wrong Church, Wrong Wedding" shows that accidents are not always bad. Each of these stories are great, but "Speak Now.." and "Wrong Church..." are my favorites! Read this book now!

5 out of 5 stars THE standard-work in the field of historical German radical "Right-wing" prose literature.......2007-02-23

I was somewhat sceptical before purchasing this book, since most German historians these days write their books with an extremely annoying Marxist terminology; EVERYTHING is interpreted as the struggle between the "classes", even when it is blatantly obvious that the subject has nothing whatsoever to do with this nonsense. Although this book shows tendencies to this from time to time, it is not something you get annoyed by. The book chronicles the authors and their work in the field of prose literature by the radical "Right" in Germany, from the early 1800's, to the end of Germany in the Ragnarok of 1945.

Seeing as no books are written in a vacuum, Hermand includes a lot of information about the general history of Germany and the political and ideological development that took place on this side of the political spectre. Most of the literature from these gentlemen of the radical "Right" was relatively Utopian and Apocalyptic, and most of it is today very hard to find, being condemned to the bonfires in the "de-nazification process" of post-war Germany. In these literary purges all the literature deemed "brown" by the occupational forces was purged from libraries and private collections and only very few copies remained. Hermand has done everyone interested in this period, and especially those who are unable to read German, a big favour with all his short résumés of this vast literature, and the intellectual milieu it was created in.

The book mentions a lot of names and books, most of them unknown today and also manages to paint a very thorough picture of the times as well. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in the various Utopian movements, thinkers and authors in Germany from the 1800's to 1945 that took their part in the struggle against the Modern world. As a bonus I can mention that the edition is very pretty, filled with wonderful art and photographs that would have been worth the price of the book alone.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Dreams of the New Reich........2004-08-25

_Old Dreams of a New Reich: Volkish Utopias and National Socialism_ by Jost Hermand is a book which provides a fascinating examination of some of the literature surrounding the rise and subsequent fall of the Third Reich. The book examines many sources, mostly idealistic and utopian in nature, from philosophers and writers, as well as a great deal of the science fiction and fantasy type novels that proliferated during the rise of the Third Reich. The book also provides an excellent collection of pictures, including detailed drawings by National Socialist fellow travellers, Volkish utopians, and Romantic Teutonic dreamers, which make this book quite unique. This book shows how those within the Volkish movement beginning in the Nineteenth century and culminating after the defeat in the First World War, calling for a Third Reich, were naïve dreamers and utopians, whose viewpoints were ruthlessly exploited by the opportunists within the upper echelons of the NSDAP proper, and Hitler himself. The book also traces out the background of Hitler and shows precisely which aspects of Volkish ideology and utopian theorizing were to play an influence on him as he grew in power after commandeering the reigns of the NSDAP. It should be noted that pastoralist and utopian dreams frequently became replaced by purely technocratic and Social Darwinist ideologies as soon as Hitler came to power. The book includes a vast amount of detail beginning with early calls for a socialised utopia by Fichte (and other philosophers) in the spirit of the French Revolution as well as along the lines of those laid out by Tacitus in his _Germania_ (the society of the primitive Germanic tribes), to calls for a restored kingdom (under a great ruler (Der Furher) - a supposed revival of that of Friedrich the Great), to the ideas of various "Aryanosophists" and pan-German nationalists (early preludes to the NSDAP) such as Guido von List, to the calls for "conservative revolution" by those "leftists on the right" such as Ernst Junger and Oswald Spengler, to the bizarre theories of Hans Horbiger (believed in by Hitler himself) regarding a global age of ice (made popular by the novelist Edmund Kiss), to the ideas of the Land Reform movement of Volkish idealists calling for a move towards the East and emphasizing the agricultural ways of the old Teuton, as well as beliefs in a primitive Teutonic matriarchy needed to achieve breeding towards the superior race, to the ideas of Hitler himself. This book makes available literature that has not become available in any other place, much of it destroyed after the war (or suppressed during the Third Reich by Hitler as heretical, an apostasy from official Third Reich propaganda). The book also includes material made available during the Second World War regarding the superiority of the German race and nation, much of it science fiction literature (often extreme in both its racism and anti-Semitism). For containing all this information, mostly discarded by other historians who will not touch upon the irrational elements behind the Third Reich, this book is to be highly recommended.

Book Description

New Dreams for Old is a collection of science fiction and fantasy stories by Mike Resnick, showing the depth and range that has not only made him a popular seller, but also placed him fourth (and climbing) on the all-time award list of all science fiction writers living and dead (as compiled by Locus).

This book contains award winners and nominees. It contains two stories that are currently in development by Hollywood. It contains stories that have won readers polls, that have won foreign prizes, and a few that are just out-and-out hilarious.

Most of these stories constitute recent work. One of them—"Travels With My Cats"—was a 2005 Hugo Award-winner and a Nebula nominee, while another —"A Princess of Earth"—was also a 2005 Hugo nominee. The story "Robots Don't Cry" was a 2004 Hugo nominee the previous year. Also included are the Hugo and Nebula nominee "For I Have Touched the Sky," Hugo nominee "Mwalimu in the Squared Circle," and Hugo winner "The 43 Antarean Dynasties." This collection also includes two novellas that have never seen print outside of the members-only Science Fiction Book Club.

Are there really elephants on Neptune? What does Old MacDonald of nursery-rhyme fame actually grow on his farm? Is there much difference between pruning elderly flowers and elderly people? A trio of award nominees, "The Elephants on Neptune," "Old MacDonald Had a Farm," and "Hothouse Flowers," provide the answers.

This is a collection of enormous range and the highest quality. More to the point, every story will not only make the reader think, but feel.

The collection is introduced by Nancy Kress, herself a multiple Hugo and Nebula winner, and a monthly columnist for Writer's Digest.

5 out of 5 stars One of our Greatest.......2007-05-24

"New Dreams for Old" is a delightful joy to read. Mike Resnick is truely one of our greatest living writers. Certainly on par with Bradbury, Asimov and even Mark Twain. He writes with deceptive ease and clairity in a truely orginal and American voice. This is an awesome collection and I hope Pyr collects more of his short works.

5 out of 5 stars A particularly notable feature of a diverse, satisfying collection demonstrating Resnick's prowess........2007-01-04

Mike Resnick's NEW DREAMS FOR OLD is a diverse short story collection which challenges the notion that science fiction collections can be dry and predictable. Here are funny stories juxtaposed with hard science, novellas that have previously been available only to members of the Science Fiction Book Club, and ten Hugo nominees. The author's introduction to each story which describes its inspirational foundations makes for a particularly notable feature of a diverse, satisfying collection demonstrating Resnick's prowess.

5 out of 5 stars A great, underrated writer.......2006-12-11

Resnick is a great writer. At his best, he rivals Asimov and Bradbury. Even when he's not at his best, he's a solid, thoughtful artist. But anyone interested in Africa, women's rights, technology, should read his Kirinyaga stories. And Elephants on Neptune presages, and updates, Gaiman, Gibson, and all the other G's. Really a wonderful treat.

Book Description

A modern retelling of A Midsummer Night's Dream, this story of a 15-year-old American girl's experience studying abroad in the Irish countryside borrows elements from Irish folklore and escapist-fantasy fiction. Adjustment to life with an Irish family is hard at first, but she forges a bond with her new school friends when, late one night, they slip out into the surrounding woods and revel with fairy-like creatures at a magical wedding party. Real settings in Ireland provide the backdrop for the story, and the Shakespearean storyline serves well to depict an adolescent's breakthrough from outsider status to membership in an enchanted society.

        3 out of 5 stars IT'S OKAY.......2007-06-21

I have tried a couple of recipes out of this book and the spaghetti meat sauce was excellent. However, the layout of the book itself is terrible. It's a paperback book and I prefer cookbooks that will stay open on the counter such as spiral bound. I also like slick, glossy pages in cookbooks as they stay cleaner. It really bothers me that the size of crockpot needed for each recipe is not stated. Some cookbooks state which sizes are necessary. I just have to figure it out based on the number of servings, but I wish it were stated in the recipe. The center of this edition has some color pictures that are on glossy pages, but they are staring to fall out of the book. The book is not very well-made.

Of all my slow cooker cookbooks, this is the one that basically gathers dust on the shelf.

3 out of 5 stars Lousy size !.......2007-03-20

I bought this book because I couldn't find my original after moving. It's a great cookbook except for the size, it is a pocket book. WAY too small for a kitchen cook book. My fault for not looking at the discription closer, guess I will check out the used ones, maybe I can find a decent original. It rates 5 stars but I gave it 3 because of the size.

        3 out of 5 stars Crockery Cookery.......2007-01-04

Was somewhat disappointed in this book. I had ordered it to replace one I previously had and it has been revised. Several of the recipes that were in it before are now gone. I also don't remember the print being so small.

        5 out of 5 stars surprisingly great.......2006-03-03

I got this based on recs at another site. honestly, I was underimpressed when I read the recipes. I've been using a crockpot for several years and consider myself a relatively good cook without using recipes much...the recipes to me appeared to be very similar to what I already throw together. but...the minor changes have helped me to make the most delicious food...in fact, yesterday I made the brisket with picante sauce (I really didn't want to make it but had already purchased the ingredients) oh my gosh, it was delicious. I would highly recommend this everyone - even get it for people as a wedding gift. I am so glad I gave this a chance...

2 out of 5 stars You Will Learn Basic Crockpot Skills.......2006-01-23

Hoffman's recipes sound delicious, but in fact are often flavorless. If you use her recipes, you WILL learn slow cooking tecniques (stacking meat in the pot, thickening sauces, etc). But after 7 years of using this book, my notes on the recipes have a continual refrain: "Needs more pizzaz"; "Add vegetables"; "Flavors need more depth".
