Book Description
Through the tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs, generations of readers have thrilled to the adventures of Lord Greystoke (aka John Clayton, but better known as Tarzan of the Apes). In this biography Philip José Farmer pieces together the life of this fantastic man, correcting Burroughs’s errors and deliberate deceptions and tracing Tarzan's family tree back to other extraordinary figures, including Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes, the Scarlet Pimpernel, Doc Savage, Nero Wolfe, and Bulldog Drummond.
Tarzan Alive offers the first chronological account of Tarzan's life, narrated in careful detail garnered from Burroughs’s stories and other sources. From the ill-fated voyage that led to Greystoke's birth on the isolated African coast to his final adventures as a group captain in the RAF during World War II, Farmer constructs a comprehensive and authoritative account. Farmer’s assertion that Tarzan was a real person has led him to craft a biography as well researched and compelling as that of any character from conventional history. This definitive Bison Books edition also includes Farmer’s “Exclusive Interview with Lord Greystoke” as well as “Extracts from the Memoirs of ‘Lord Greystoke’” first anthologized in Mother Was a Lovely Beast.

Super Reader.......2007-08-07
This is great. Almost mind-boggling the effort that Farmer has put in, here. Try and find the men with grey eyes. :) G-8 became schizoid after a breakdown, becoming The Shadow and The Spider. That is just fabulous.
The House of Tarzan.......2007-05-26
Edgar Rice Burroughs put out 24 books on the adventures of Tarzan. I enjoyed most of these and would recommend them without a doubt. What we get here from Philip Jose Farmer is the 'biography' of Tarzan written as if he were an actual real person. The bio looks at ERB as a novelist given a 'based on actual events' type of writing with embellishments added when needed. PJF looks into the life of Tarzan and the novels letting you know what are 'true events of Tarzan's life' and what is 'completely made up by ERB'. The best part of this book is that PJF chronologically orders the multitude of books put forth by ERB which has always been a concern of the readers with the time frame inconsistencies.
PJF, using the Wold Newton Meteor theory also gives an extension of the Greystoke family tree to include the likes of Sherlock Holmes, The Shadow, Doc Savage, James Wilder, Nero Wolfe and many many other literary characters. The addendums help to attempt to clarify this convoluted ancestory. I think an actual Family Tree Graph could have been included to help visualize the genology put forth which still gets a bit confusing after the addendum pieces. Addendum 5 is particularly nice as it goes through and again summarizes the timeline for Tarzan based events.
If you have the 24 Tarzan books, this is well worth including with them. After reading 'Tarzan Alive', you will have a different perspective on the ERB books should you reread them. A must for the Tarzan fan, but you may scoff at some of the things and people that PJF includes in this biography.
Good book... but..........2007-02-09
I greatly enjoyed the tales of Tarzan as presented in Tarzan Alive. The problem I have is this... I haven't read the original source material. I thought the Definitive Biography would include a real biography, when instead it often just contrasts events with the original stories. Thus, it would have been helpful if I had read all the original stories before delving into Tarzan Alive. That being said, this book was a very good read, and I look forward to someone reprinting Phillip Jose Farmer's His Apocalyptic Life so I can see the true life of Doc Savage as well. Thank you Bison Frontiers for helping me find this book that I had heard so much about!
Fun biography, even for casual fans of Tarzan and/or Farmer.......2006-10-05
Farmer's direct tribute to Edgar Rice Burroughs is a fictional biography of Tarzan. It is probably not going to be interesting to those who have never read one of Burroughs' Tarzan books, but those who have will find "Tarzan Alive" a treasure of entertainment. It is nice to see that this book has returned to print, being an important reader's guide to the most famous fictional character of the 20th century.
It would be very easy to dismiss the Tarzan books as simple entertainment saturated with ignorant descriptions of Africa. Farmer takes on the task of making the reader regard Burroughs more seriously, by insisting the Tarzan is a real person and Burroughs a biographer. All the inaccuracies and obvious fiction are attempts by Burroughs to protect the still-living Tarzan. Farmer never uses a cheap "you're in on the joke" device and saturates the book with meticulous research. Instead of annoyance, the errors in Burroughs' narratives becoming interesting in their own right: soon the reader is drawn into Farmer's quest for the "real" story behind the Tarzan books. Burroughs' theme of the nature of man vs. nurture by man's environment is more appreciated. Farmer insists that he has interviewed the Ape-man himself, and this edition contains that interview.
This is a nice companion to any of the Burroughs Tarzan books, and a key to appreciating Farmer's own Tarzan-spired fiction ("Lord Tyger," "Dark Heart of Time," the Opar books, etc.).
Uniquel!.......2006-08-19
"Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street" is out-of print and so is "Doc Savage and his Apocalyptic Life". Almost all other works are either out-of-print or are simply not available. Hence, at least in the current state of the market, this work stands alone unchallenged in terms of all the aspects. A reader who knows only the name of the most famous creation of Edgar Rice Burroughs, can also enjoy this book to the fullest extent. Go ahead and enjoy this book.

Other Books.......2007-09-03
This is great. Almost mind-boggling the effort that Farmer has put in, here. Try and find the men with grey eyes. :) G-8 became schizoid after a breakdown, becoming The Shadow and The Spider. That is just fabulous.
Wolde Newton begins.......2007-08-30
At this point, Farmer's (among others) Wolde-Newton Universe is well-established, with a strong fan base. For those not in the know, the Wolde-Newton Universe chronicles the connection between almost every pulp fiction character ever created, in real-world terms, as if the fictions we know are based on a true story. This book, while centered on Tarzan, of course, is a cornerstone of the Wolde-Newton idea. The idea of Lord Greystoke as still alive and kicking today (thanks to friends and family like Doc Savage and Sherlock Holmes), and the attempt to reconcile his pulp chronicles with a real life person makes for a pretty exciting read. Farmer is always good for a read, anyway, but he is a tireless student of the pulps, and has made a strong tapestry of their characters and situations in a real-world reference. Bottom line: i dug it. That having been said, Jane's measurements are a bit hard to swallow. Seriously.
Farmer having some fun.......2007-08-11
The book is pretty silly, really, but it's also pretty fun, with Farmer trying to explain how Tarzan is related to Bulldog Drummond, Doc Savage and just about every character he read while growing up. Too bad he didn't toss in John Carter of Mars! Nothing great, but it's a pleasant read.
The straight poop on Tarzan of the Apes.......2003-09-13
Philip Jose Farmer has a lot of fun with the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs character. This book is a "biography" which supposes that the Tarzan novels tell the story of a real figure, albeit much fictionalized to protect his true identity. Farmer seperates the "fact" from the fiction and also traces the jungle lord's kinship with such other notable figures as Sherlock Holmes, Doc Savage, the Shadow, and the Scarlet Pimpernel. An entertaining read, although often very poorly written.
The Lowdown on the Earl of Greystoke.......2000-05-30
The author once indicated that the title was imposed upon him, but outside of the title, the book is thoroughly enjoyable. As with "Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street," this book is a biography of the title character.
In Farmer's case, he had to explain, among other things, how the young Tarzan learned how to speak, when the known great apes don't. Reconciling the history of Tarzan with what was known then, and at the time of the book's writing, was an exercise that took a lot of time and effort, and Mr. Farmer was up to the task.
A family tree, linking Tarzan to other famous literary figures, is included.

A Great Cook Book for the working girl.......2007-01-10
This is a wonderful cookbook for a working person. I found I had almost all of the items already in my kitchen and the receipts are so easy and quick to put together.
Good book, Great food!.......2007-01-09
I really like the recipes, and the food is very tasty. My family loves anything I make out of this.
GREAT PRICE.......2007-01-09
I LOVE THESE COOKBOOKS AND THIS IS A GREAT PRICE. I PAID MORE FOR MY OWN THESE WERE ACTUALLY GIFTS. I HATE THAT I BOUGHT MINE AT FULL PRICE.
Good for Inexperienced Cooks.......2006-06-28
After seeing the rave reviews, I was excited to try this new book. Unfortunately, upon receiving it, I was disappointed. I'm an experienced cook who likes a wide variety of foods; this book offers easy recipes, but the variety is limited. At one point, I felt like I had read 10 ways to recreate instant rice!
This book would be excellent for new cooks who are unsure of how to combine foods or don't want to take the time to experiment. The recipes are quite easy, healthy and include ingredients almost everyone will have.
This book is NOT useful for those of us who know our way around a kitchen, though, or who understand common sense ways to cut down on fatty foods.
Good, easy cooking.......2006-02-05
I own two cookbooks in the "Busy People" series, and both of them are well-thumbed and often-used. I'm a bachelor with limited cooking skills (and with even less patience when it comes to kitchen chores), but this book offers simple, easy recipes that can be quickly prepared with very few ingredients. The directions are concise, and each recipe is printed on a separate page with a graphic that clearly gives preparation and cooking time. Nutritional information for each dish is also listed. The recipes are generally low in fat, but they don't have the long-as-your-arm list of exotic ingredients and spices that I find in many low-fat cookbooks.
Of course some of the recipes are better than others, but almost everything I've tried has been very good. There's nothing fancy here: if you want to impress someone with a virtuoso kitchen performance, there may be better collections. For plain ol' weeknight cooking that's healthy, fast, and inexpensive, this book is a worthy standby.

Disappointed.......2007-06-08
Some of the recipes are too specific, too bland or too hard to find the ingredients. The deserts were serious failures for the most past. However, there are some good recipes in this book.
Beware the Chicken & Angel Hair Pasta.......2007-02-12
I was shocked when I opened the crock pot at the end of this disastrous recipe. I thought that I must have made a mistake as I frantically read the recipe again. Turns out I did make a mistake....buying this book! In short, this recipe turned out to be dry chicken and pasta in bitter water with white flecks from the sour cream. It was completely inedible. I'm afraid to try anything else. If you review this book, please list what worked for you.
GREAT COOKBOOK!.......2007-01-09
I LOVE THESE COOKBOOKS AND THIS IS A GREAT PRICE. I PAID MORE FOR MY OWN THESE WERE ACTUALLY GIFTS. I HATE THAT I BOUGHT MINE AT FULL PRICE.
Quick preparation and delicious!.......2006-03-22
Love the binding on this book. Very good recipes. Ingredients you usually have on hand. Will suggest it to friends.
Busy People should eat better than this!.......2005-11-18
I own a lot of cookbooks and have honestly never purchased a more ridiculous book. Seven ingredients or less, yes - it's easy when you're using canned soup, prepared chili or bottled marinade. The recipes feature a lot of processed ingredients too like non-dairy creamer for potato chowder. And I don't need a slow cooker to make tea - 8 teabags, water, mint extract and splenda - 2 hours in the old slow cooker and voila, you have something that should take ten minutes to make. Convenient - maybe, Easy - yes, Delicious, no way.

Low-Fat, but high sugar and junk.......2007-07-12
The recipes use a lot of processed food ingredients and sugar. It's very deceiving. You usually equate low-fat with healthy. The front even says it's healthy for your heart. I beg to differ. I wasn't able to find one recipe in there that I wanted to make.
Low-Fat Cookbook.......2006-11-03
This is the second recipe book written by Dawn Hall that I have bought. It has a lot of great, easy, healthy recipes in it. My family has enjoyed the meals and these are so quick to fix. Great Books!!
Bland, boring recipes.......2006-05-08
Dont waste your money. This book is full of tasteless, boring recipes that are just plain awful. The author praises herself in describing each one like you have never tasted anything better. While reading the intro, I found it quite funny how she states that she has no education, but decided to home school her kids. I wouldn't run around bragging about that.
Recipes are okay.......2006-03-24
The recipes are quick and easy, but they tend to use a lot of the same ingredients - chicken, rice, noodles, etc. There are also not a lot of vegetables involved and I love vegetables. If you're a "meat and potatoes" kind of person, though, the you'd probably like the recipes. I prefer the AHA low fat, low cholesterol cookbooks even though the recipes take a bit longer. There's more variety.
Very Good!.......2006-03-20
Just a quick review, I have made several items from this cookbook and everything has been delicious! Looking forward to making more!

Misnomer.......2006-06-16
This "cookbook" is not so much a cookbook as it is a directory for fastfood restaurants in every state and city in the country. My high hopes were quickly dashed as we opened the book, only to find the numbers and addresses of inumerable McDonald's and KFC's. The only thing fat-free about this "book" would be the pages, in my estimation.
Ferris Robinson cooked for me.......2004-07-12
And it was terrible...she's like school on saturday...no class
- Trey Anastasio
Why does low fat always mean bad taste?.......2004-07-04
I bought this cookbook for my mother as she is an avid cook and vegetarian. After a week of trying many of the recipes we gave up! Nothing in this book was remotely edible! This cookbook reads like a cross between a bad anecdote and a hodge podge of contrasting ingredients. Save your money, there is not even a sparkle of inspiration in its pages.
Eye catching title...Stomach turning content.......2004-07-02
You might guess from the title that this is just the thing for busy people to eat well. Unfortunately it is only the title.
The contents of this cookbook are not gourmet...and what is the point of saving time with a fast to prepare meal if you have to spend twice as much time on the toilet?
Bad cokbook for Moms.......2004-06-29
My Mom got this cookbook recently...unfortunately for me and Dad. The recipies she tried so far were either tasteless or full of bad tastes. Yuck! I don't think Mom cared much for them either because she stopped trying new recipies. Save your money and try a different cookbook.
