The story of Mad Donna.......2007-06-12
Necromunda is an offshoot of the Warhammer 40K setting. I've never played the game myself but have watched it. That has little bearing on this series of books so knowledge of the game really isn't needed to read the books. This is the second book from the series I've read and it won't be the last. However, there's problems with this book. One is a large amount of editting errors which has little bearing on the story. The second is the story itself. Each current action chapter ends with a flashback segment in an attempt to clarify why Mad Donna nee D'onne Ulanti is in the Underhive and not in the Spires where she was raised. For me, the flashbacks were a momentum killer but I understand why the author wrote the book in this format.
Basically, we get a story about Mad Donna as she travels through the underhive dregs and pushes through the various gangs there. The whole book seemed based more on the author coming up with a bada** character and then trying to build a story around her. There's plenty of action but it's basically a journey from Point A to Point B before you find out what is really supposed to happen which is then cut too short. Love the character of Mad Donna and the cover art is inspiring for visualization (as are all the covers for this series) while reading the story. It's dirty, deadly, and full of lowlifes, crime, and the desire to survive (often leading to what is deemed more criminal activity). However, in a place of little law, what exactly are the crimes? It's social suppression by the few elitists while the 'lower classes' revert to gang mentality for survival.
Overall, great character, good action, too many flashbacks, and I would have rather dealt with a longer version of Dead Man's Hole than the trip from Glory Hole to Relli's manse. Big attribute is that you get a better understanding of the gang factions for the other books. I'd certainly read another adventure based on Mad Donna.
Dis iz great.......2005-10-19
Dis iz 'un uv da bestest books I 'as evva read, by da name uv da Great Green Unclean 'Un! Dis 'ere novel iz 'bout a fem pink skin who lives by 'er wit 'n 'er weapons, bit lik da ork boyz really. She's tuff as nails an just as mean too! She runs from 'er past but like it always does it comes back ter get ya 'n she must face wot she 'as done.
Ifin ya evva played Necromunda ya will remba 'er as "da psycobitch" 'an dat sayin' sumfing as da undahive is a nasty place where notority truely means sumfing!
Dis 'ere book is sumfing dat I'ze can't recomend enough fer anyone ta read sos read it er I'll 'ave ta thump ya 'n ya don't want dat now do ya?
Proof you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover..........2005-08-11
Forget the fact that it's a Warhammer 40k novel. It's a dark, fast reading, adventure with cool gadgets and a bloody heroine who doesn't mind getting her hands dirty doing the wet work.
Mad Donna is a noble daughter turned Escher gang member turned solo outlaw. After a crime committed in the elitist Spire, she turns to the Underhive where the only law is that which rests on your hip. Things are bearable and Mad Donna is at least feared enough to be left alone until a summons from her past makes her realize that her past crime has never been forgotten.
She's not all tough as nails and I would have loved to have seen a bit more depth to the characters but as with the other Necromunda novels take them for what they are, a fast read adventure in a dark grim bloody future where wits and a quick draw keep you alive.
Definitely better than I expected and worth checking out the rest of the series if they stay this good.

Good book.......2001-07-31
This book is different from the traditional martial arts manual.
It talks about what works in real fights.
The contents of this book will give the reader a different perspective of self-defense.

Things are not exactly looking up for Nina Fischman--recently split from her boyfriend, unemployed, back living with her mother in Manhattan, and at 40, feeling that perhaps her best years are behind her (and even those weren't so great). Quietly slipping into compromised complacency, she is suddenly jolted back to life by--what else?--a murder mystery. To add to the intrigue, a prime suspect is her brother-in-law, who not only worked with the recently departed, but just happened to be involved in a lucrative real estate deal with him, so guess who now owns the property? Motive? You bet. But there is also the animal-rights group who had targeted the late scientist for his treatment of lab animals, and even his widow had her reasons. At times funny and consistently quirky, Survival Instincts is a fun read that keeps the reader guessing.
Book Description
This is the latest mystery featuring Nina Fischman, that witty Upper West Side lawyer who's slipping out of her thirties, still on a diet and without a boyfriend. Just three months after Nina gave up everything to follow her boyfriend Jonathan to California, she is back in New York--single, jobless, living with her mother and ready to start all over again. But the doldrums quickly subside when her brother-in-law, the dermatologist, becomes a murder suspect. Ken was involved in a real estate deal with Andy, the dead man, a scientist whose researches involved animal experimentation, and he seems to have been poisoned--just what Nina needed. She and her equally irrepressible mother Ida can't keep their noses out of trouble and start their own investigation. Whodunit? The dead man's striking wife? Andy's lab colleagues? The animal activist? Ken? And can Nina figure it all out as the clues fall into place? You bet.

The Piesman series (#6) goes out with a whimper -- too bad.......2002-04-25
Despite a very weak plot (for a mystery), I enjoyed the 5th book in this series about a self-deprecating lawyer who solves crimes on the side. Our leading lady, Nina Fischman, spends more time worrying about relationships, being Jewish, being overweight, whether to have sex, etc., than on her job or detective work, so there's not much time or space left for chasing clues and unraveling puzzling cases.
In this last of the series, #6 written in 1997, it's almost like Marissa knew this was her last gasp, and gave in to fatigue. After an incredible change of heart between these last two books, Nina not only finally moved in with boyfriend Jonathan, but followed him in a relocation to the West Coast. After three miserable months of being a (Jewish) couch potato, she decides to move back to NYC. Being essentially homeless, jobless, and with little or no savings, she moves in with Mom (Ida -- who plays a pretty lively role) and proceeds to enjoy sponging for several months. Her more or less perfect sister, Laura (who 'longside her husband "Ken" sounded like a ringer for Mattel's "Barbie") talks her into chasing down the murder of a friend's husband, which for some reason, despite the most obvious motives and clues in the world, the police couldn't or wouldn't pursue...
So what we have here is really just an excuse to show us Nina's daydreams, her life dilemmas, and her ramblings with Mom -- both metaphysical and physical as even Ida gets into the detective work. We might quibble that there was a good bit of Yiddish passing between them that was somewhat difficult to follow, and somehow the humor we enjoyed from her earlier works seemed forced; while some of the good lines got us laughing, much of the stuff was so overt we either saw it coming or wished we hadn't.
In all, we felt Survival Instincts to be not representative of Piesman's better work, and thus a disappointment. In truth, these tales are really more dramas than mysteries; although light reading at best, they will do little to satisfy ardent detective fans, and this time the repartee just seemed a little stale....
Nina is my idol!!.......1999-10-15
Nina makes sluething very entertaining. If only Ms. Piesman would write quicker. She is my all-time favorite author. As far as I'm concerned, Nina is the best!
As usual, another wonderfully entertaining escapade by Nina!.......1999-07-30
I have read every one of the Nina Fischman series, and I have never been disappointed. My only problem is that Marissa Piesman does not write fast enough for me! I am looking forward to her next Nina Fischman. Oy, let her find true love already!

"Bombshell", indeed...........2006-05-06
Yes, you read the byline right; I am, in fact, a red-blooded American male who will admit to reading series romance books in public. (In both senses of the phrase, at that -- most of SURVIVAL INSTINCT went by while I was either riding on or waiting for buses. And no one even looked at me funny.)
Then again, the Bombshell line -- and Doranna Durgin's books in particular -- isn't the marshmallow fare we men have been led to believe prevails in the romance world. Like its predecessors in Durgin's "Hunter Agency" series, SURVIVAL INSTINCT is a sharply drawn, realistically edgy action yarn featuring a strong female lead and a likeable if stubborn hero. As in previous novels, Durgin gets points for creating characters who don't make Stupid Action Hero Mistakes[tm] -- well, for the most part anyway. And Karin's background gives her a better-than-average excuse for walking into trouble late in the book; she has good reason to give trust sparingly, and she takes sensible precautions.
Result: another solid read from Durgin, with more than enough groundwork laid for an even more compelling sequel. Don't let the series-romance labeling fool you; these books are high grade capital-S Suspense.
Another great book from Doranna.......2006-04-19
From the moment I opened the pages I was drawn into the world of Karin Sommers. Doranna has the ability to craft the characters so that you almost become that character. The opening scene had me on the edge of my seat. Would they get away from their step-father, and when the car came to a halt, it was almost like watching a movie, I actually flinched when the truck came up.
Living through Karin's adventures was a wild roller coaster ride and I didn't stop to breath until it was over.
Having Kimmer and the Hunter agency thrown in was the cream on the ice cream sundae. Yummy and I want more!
action-packed thriller .......2006-04-14
Karin Sommers decides to go straight after a life as a con artist, but to succeed she knows she must flee her stepfather, She also realizes she needs help so she turns to her half-sister Ellen, who gladly assists her beloved sibling. Alas a happy ending escapes them when Ellen dies in a car accident.
Karin becomes Ellen to hide from her stepfather and to avoid arrest as there is now a warrant out on her. One year later investigator Dave Hunter finds her and, thinking she is Ellen, demands she help him locate an abducted boy snatched by her former boyfriend, a probable child molester. Karin agrees to help him though it risks her cover. However, what she fears most is her attraction to the obviously intelligent detective who if she reveals the truth will surely take her in as he is ethical by the book.
The key to this action-packed thriller is Karin who feels guilt over Ellen's death, but shock once she learns her half-sister whom she placed on a pedestal had some dark secrets too. While the plot focuses on a desperate attempt to rescue the child and to a degree on the attraction between the sleuth and the woman in hiding, the tale's refreshing angle is the emotions of the heroine. Karin is a terrific center to an action-packed thriller.

Customer Reviews:
I am somwhat disappointed but not surprised. .......2007-09-10
I lived and worked in Korea for almost 2 decades and consider korea my second home. I also love to eat and cook Korean food. I also married a Korean and have some insight in day to day meal prep. I am disappointed that Bechu )korean cabbage) is compared to napa cabbage. It is not the same. Twice a year Koreans buy bechu for betchu kimche, winter and summer kimche. It is very similar, but not identical to a typical cabbage you get here in the US, heavy, solid. I am also disappointed in some of the ingredients / descriptions and uses. For example, ground red pepper - gochu garu versus ground chili paste - gochu chung. That was not really addressed yet is a mainstay in the Korean meals. Some Korean dishes are difficult to put into a recipe simply because some of the ingredients real take a lot of time to prepare. We are lucky here in Denver that there is a Korean market, Midopa, which imports the actual Korean vegetables including bechu, got to gi (turnip) and so forth so we can make authentic Korean dishes. However, you cannot obtain homemade, that is to say family made, soy sauce and sesame oil produced here in the US. There are some older agimas who keep to the old ways who make it but is for family use, not for sale. My inlaws will bring these items here when they visit. The difference in taste is like night and day. Be advised also that each family prepares their meals a little differently.
Excellent Recipes.......2007-06-26
This is another excellent Korean cookbook. The recipe for Pancakes is excellent and tastes just like my expensive local restaurant's. Highly recommend for anyone addicted to Korean food.
A good basic introduction to Korean cooking.......2007-04-10
Like a lot of Western fans of Asian cooking, I never am quite sure if what I'm eating in a restaurant is the real, authentic cooking of a regions, or an overly Westernized version. Korean food has not been homoginized to the extent that Chinese and Thai food have in this country, but unless you're dining with a Korean-born companion you can never know for sure. The same goes for cookbooks; is this the real recipe someone would serve in their home in Korea, or something that's been homoginized to a MacDonld's-trained palatte?
I bought "Eating Korean" after reading reviews both here at Amazon and at a few on-line bulletin boards for Korean expats and Korean-Americans. The general concensus was that while the recipes were toned down a bit in seasoning, they are indeed authentic. So far, my experience has been that carefully following the recipes in Celia Hae-Jin Lee's book will deliver something very close to what I've had in various restaurants. I've made her seafood pancakes (Pa Jun), kimchee pancakes, and various namool, and all have come out very close to what I expected.
Unlike some cookbooks for non-western cuisines, no special cookware or difficult techniques are required for most of the recipes presented here. A large pot and a skillet or wok should suffice for most any recipe. Grilled meats like Bulgogi can be made on a barbecue grill. You might want to buy a traditional bowl for serving the hot BiBimBop, or some large mason jars for making Kimchee, but that's about it.
Aside from the recipes, the author's stories of growing up Korean in Korea and America are very enjoyable, and provide a context for the recipes; I was greatly reminded of another favorite cookbook, "Every Grain of Rice: A Taste of Our Chinese Childhood in America", which, although about Chinese and not Korean cooking, has a similar narrative structure.
Great Background.......2007-01-14
This is an excellent cookbook, albiet one written by a Korean-American. Like most younger Korean-Americans, she has toned down the fire. This is not a problem because almost all of her dishes can be heated up or energized by adding ground Korean Chilli Pepper. She gives excellent background on the dishes and this book is one of the best Korean Cookbooks I have seen in English. The only other comment I have is that she like many young people adds a bit too much sugar for my taste in her recipes.
its great.......2006-12-26
I love this book not only because the author is my friend's sister, but because I am Korean too and know how the food should taste. The taste of food is regional, but the recipes in this book are very good. You can tweak it to what your individual tastes are, but I love the simplicity of how she describes everything and also that its not just all fluff and pictures. The stories are heartwarming. She also tells you the names of the food in Korean (written in English the way Koreans would pronounce it) and there are sooo many recipes! I think this is the best Korean food cookbook written in English by far.
Book Description
Flavorful and satisfying, Korean cuisine is a tantalizing balance of tastes and texturesfiery peppers are a counterpoint to mild rice, fragrant sesame oil adds a
hint of sweetness to meat and vegetables, and pickled kimchi adds zest with its tanginess and crunch. And, best of all, Korean food emphasizes vegetables and grains, making it as healthy as it is delicious.

Customer Reviews:
How am I supposed to do this?.......2007-09-12
So many reviews here talking about how wonderful this book is. I guess I agree with the fact that it looks real nice and is very loyal to Korean history and korean traditional food. But this is just not a down to earth cook book, it lacks so many recipes for the common everyday Korean food that my mom used to cook. Even familiar recipes like "bulgogi" look different in this book. Only get this book if you're opening a high class Korean cuisine restaurant or are entering a food exhibition show. NOT for the practical people.
Terrific book for those unfamiliar with Korean ingredients.......2007-08-15
I am an avid cook but have only tried Korean cooking in the past three years. I love this book! The introduction is great for those new to Korean cooking, especially the photos and Korean and English names of various ingredients. I have made about eight things from this book and all were wonderful except for the miyeokguk (seaweed soup), which called for "12 ounces dried seaweed, soaked in cold water for 30 minutes" -- this quantity is absurdly large, but being unfamiliar with dried seaweed I didn't realize this... kind of a fiasco. But do try the bibimbap, bibimmyeon, japchae, pyogojeon, dakgaseum gui... I am salivating just thinking about these. Enjoy!
Good introduction, but don't rely on this as the only Korean cookbook in your kitchen.......2006-03-11
This book is a great INTRODUCTION to Korean food. The book provides a history of Korean cooking, excellent pictures, and a brief glossary. However, I did find some problems:
- As far as diversity or recipes, I suggest buying this book and perhaps another as recommended by other reviewers. I live in California and therfore have access to Korean grocery stores as large as American grocery stores. I bought this book hoping to find recipes for the many items I see at the condiment bar as well as the selection of soups sold at the food court. I was disappointed to find this book did not have such varied selection.
- Don't buy this book if you are looking for vegetarian, fish, or shrimp recipes. Out of the 57 dishes (excluding desserts and drinks) there are only 6 vegetarian, 1 fish, and 1 shrimp recipe. The rest are mostly beef, chicken, and squid.
- Also, be careful about the measurements for salt. Aside from the kimchi recipes, most of the other recipes require almost twice too much salt. I suggest adding less than half the amount stated, then adding additional to taste.
I use the recipes all the time.......2005-05-17
I'm not Korean, but I love spicy food, and I've visited Korea 20 years ago. This book is the best. I have purchased about 5 Korean cookbooks from Amazon, and this book runs circles around them. If you want to cook Korean at home, buy this book. If you need Korean ingredients and you don't have a store nearby, there are a few websites you can order from: kgrocer.com, ikoreaplaza.com and koamart.com. Try it, it is so delicious!
I think most of the commenters are in agreement........2004-10-18
I like this book alot, too. It gives great pictures that allow you to push forward and cook without much hesitation.
This is my first korean cookbook, the other cookbook I own is a sushi book. I'm not sure which one I like better. But the last meal I cooked, "Fresh vegetable Bibimbap", is the best meal I've had in a long time. I even got the bulgogi to taste like the restuarants I visited in Boston, with my Korean friends.
I like this book alot. I must cook more.
An addition:
The cultures that I have received have blessed me greatly. From food to principle, I have grown a lot.
Now, if someone gets a hold of this truth, it transforms them. Accepting other races, and other cultures or communities is the way to riches.
