A high body count.......2006-04-23
When Quark inadvertantly activates an alien signal device, invaders infiltrate DS9 and slaughter ensues. Although badly written, this book features a tight, creative plot that would have made a fine episode (albeit a very bloody one). I expect sloppy prose in a Trek novel, but it's important for the author to get the dialogue right, and Dafydd ab Hugh succeeds for the most part. The central characters are Quark and Odo; their interaction is handled well. At this point in the series, Odo's nature and backstory had not been developed very well, so ab Hugh has him doing some things that don't quite jibe with the way he would be developed later, but that's forgivable. In particular, the climax requires him to withstand some impossibly harsh environmental conditions. All in all, though, it's a good read if you like Trek.
Loved it.......2006-03-31
I can't put this book down. Basically "K. Wyat" took the words right out of my mouth. Just wanted to leave a review so I could put my five stars in.
Good Trek book.......2005-06-18
If you want to know more about Odo and Quark relationship this is a good book. Also if you want to know about the wimp O'Brien this also the book.
SPOILER:
I wish they developed Colonel Hata some more. Why was she so good and revered?
The bits on the Ferengi cringes were good.
I didn't understand why they didn't figure out the Bekkir weakness earlier in the book. I mean come on! Use their own weapons against them.
The references between Odo and Luxwana I didn't understand because I didn't know if they came from a book or an episode.
Overall it's a good story.

Quark and Odo open Pandora's box and are teleported into the future to see firsthand the results of the evil that they have unleashed upon the station. You have to make allowances for the fact that this novel was written when Deep Space Nine was still in its infancy - and it shows. A lot of the character development that would occur throughout the television series is absent here. This novel is distinctive in that it is one of the most (if not THE most) violent Star Trek novels ever written with lengthy descriptions of terrible battles and the grisly toll that they take on the station and its inhabitants as well as graphic depictions of cold-blooded executions. On the whole, not a bad read although the graphic depictions of wanton violence can be disturbing. What ever happened to the Bekkir?
Interesting plot, poorly written.......2004-05-30
This book is a good example why the Star Trek series accept story ideas from outside the writing staffs, and an equally good example why the scripts themselves are written by the experts. The plot is truly interesting, and in the hands of someone with a better grasp of the characters, this could have been dynamite. However, unlike the Avatar books, for example, there were far too many examples of characters saying or doing inappropriate or uncharacteristic things. An apparent attempt to capture some of the popular give-and-take between Odo and Quark from the early seasons of DS9 is badly handled, and the mood swings wildly from somber to silly. Unnecessary sexual dialogue during the story's climax (no pun intended) is just an example of the type of thing that jarred me out of the plot. This is a book with a neat plot idea. I wish the author had collaborated with someone who could write the characters in a more believable way. Somewhat interesting read for the plot but ultimately not satisfying for me.
Book Description
Near the end of the Apollo 15 mission, David Scott and fellow moonwalker James Irwin conducted a secret ceremony unsanctioned by NASA: they placed on the lunar soil a small tin figurine called “The Fallen Astronaut,” along with a plaque bearing a list of names. This book enriches the saga of mankind’s greatest scientific undertaking, Project Apollo, and conveys the human cost of the space race – by telling the stories of those sixteen astronauts and cosmonauts who died reaching for the moon.
Many people are aware of the Apollo launch pad disaster in which three men lost their lives, but few know of the other five fallen astronauts whose stories this book tells as well: among them, Ted Freeman and C.C. Williams, who died in the crashes of their -38 jets; the “Gemini Twins,” Charlie Bassett and Elliot See, killed when their jet slammed into the building where their Gemini capsule was undergoing final construction; and Ed Givens, whose fatal car crash has until now been obscured by rumors. The extraordinary lives and accomplishments of these and other fallen astronauts – including eight Russian cosmonauts who lost their lives during training – unfold here in intimate and compelling detail, supported by extensive interviews and archival material. Their stories return us to a stirring time in the history of our nation and remind us of the cost of fulfilling our dreams.

Fascinating reading.......2007-08-23
Another excellent book from Mr. Burgess. I especially enjoyed the great level of detail in this book. Mr. Burgess even provides the astronauts' mothers' and wives' maiden names, their childhood addresses and many obscure yet interesting facts about their early careers. It was also interesting to learn how many of the astronauts had interacted with each other in the years before they joined NASA. While you know the eventual outcome of each chapter, I still found myself hoping it would somehow turn out differently.
I had just started working for McDonnell Aircraft on Gemini 9 a few months before the crash of See and Bassett into the Gemini manufacturing building in St. Louis. This book clarified several details of the accident that had become fuzzy over the years.
The epilogue was of interest to learn how many of the relatives and colleagues have moved on.
To Charlie, whose place I took.......but where is Robert Lawrence?.......2007-07-03
I read this book about three years ago, and enjoyed learning more about Elliot See, Ted Freeman, C.C. Williams, Ed Givens, Charlie Bassett, and Roger Chaffee. I didn't know that Freeman graduated from Annapolis in the same class as Ross Perot (1953), and I didn't know that both See and Chaffee were both Eagle Scouts. See is often noted as a "civilian", but he was a Navy Reservist, and stayed that way throughout his time in the Astronaut Corps.
It was nice to learn about the Russian Cosmonauts, since I was familar with the deaths of Vladmir Komarov and the Soyuz 11 crew only. However, I was disappointed that Robert Lawrence was omitted. Lawrence was a MOL astronaut who was killed in a plane crash in October 1967. MOL was cancelled around the end of 1968. There were two other former MOL astronauts who were killed in plane crashes, but not while they were part of the Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) project.
The gravesites of Freeman, Williams, Chaffee, See, and Bassett can be found at Arlington National Cemetery. A few years ago, I found them and put flags on their graves. There's also a section of the Electrical Engineering Building at Texas Tech University named for Charlie Bassett. The library in Clear Lake is named for Ted Freeman. Colleagues of Freeman and Bassett have said that these men would most likely have had moon missions if they had not succumbed to early deaths. Buzz Aldrin dedicated his first book Return to Earth to Charlie Bassett, saying "to Charlie..whose place I took."
An Outstanding Wokr.......2006-04-01
If you grew up in the 1960s and could name every astronaut and recount the details of each Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo mission (or, if you didn't), this outstanding work is a very important milestone and accurate record that enables us to remember the sacrifices made to reach the Moon. In great detail from the impressive research conducted by the authors, this book provides very rare insights into the lives of Astronauts Freeman, See, Bassett, Grissom, White, Chaffee, Givens, Williams, and the cosmonauts from the former Soviet Union. The book also dispels some rumors with respect to the accidents that took the lives of these skilled pilots and astronauts, as many of those rumors have been reported, merely repeated, and accepted in other accounts unfortunately as facts.
Thank you for reminding us of a time when America tackled a monumental challenge, and allowing us to be more fully grateful for the lives lived and lost so that we could meet that national challenge and extend the spirit of exploration to the heavens.
WOW, the missing stories.......2006-03-11
This was an EXCELLENT book!!! A lot of things history missed,,, we know most of the Grisson, White and Chaffee story but, I knew nothing about,,, Freeman or Givens (For example). The part about the Russins was good, didnt know about them as much.
A Fitting Tribute.......2005-10-29
"Fallen Astronauts" is a long overdue book on the astronauts and cosmonauts who died during the race to the moon. Colin Burgess and Kate Doolan (with assistance from the remarkable Bert Vis in the area of the Soviet space program casualties) have written a magnificent book, which serves as both a tribute and a historical accounting of the astronauts who died in the space race. The book is full of rare facts and biographical insights which were in danger of being lost forever, but thanks to these authors and the University of Nebraska (Bison Books), they are now preserved for future space historians and enthusiasts.
The book covers all the fatalities in the US space program up through the death of C. C. Williams on 5 October 1967, plus the Soviet fatalities from the same era. Bert Vis has done extraordinary work uncovering the history of the Soviet space fatalities, which were (and to a degree still are) hidden in secrecy. The passing of Valentin Bondarenko is especially painful to recount, not only for the tragic circumstances and disturbing details of his death, but for the realization that had the USSR been more open about the hazards of working in a pressurized 100 percent oxygen atmosphere, the deaths of Grissom, White, and Chaffee might have been prevented.
This book is both detailed and concise. It provides genuine insight into these men who paid the ultimate price for space exploration, and recounts their lives and deaths with compassion, accuracy, and a sense of gratitude. The book easily deserves five stars, and I recommend it without any reservations.

Book Description
On the court and on the field, they are the world’s winners, exhibiting a natural grace and prowess their adoring fans can only dream about. Yet so often, when off the field, our sports heroes lose: their perspective, their balance, their place. In a work as timely as the latest fracas on the basketball court or the most recent drug-induced scandal in the dugout, Stanley H. Teitelbaum looks into the circumstances behind so many star athletes’ precipitous fall from grace. Why, he asks, do these sports heroes who seem to have it all also seem, increasingly, to have a superhuman proclivity for self-destruction?
In his psychotherapy practice, Teitelbaum has worked extensively with professional athletes and sports agents—work he draws on here for insight into the psyche of sports figures as well as the off-the-field challenges they face. Considering both historical and current cases, he shows how, in many instances, the very factors that elevate athletes to superstardom can contribute to their downfall: the adulation of fans and obsessive attention of the media and the distorted self-image and personal demons that often accompany a headlong drive to succeed. An evenhanded and honest look at athletes who have faltered, Teitelbaum’s work helps us see past our sports stars’ exalted image into what that image—and its frailty—says about our society and ourselves.

It didn't start with Barry Bonds or the Duke lacrosse players.......2006-07-09
This book is one of my favorites, though I wouldn't recommend you sit down with it if you want mindless chuckles about what kooks athletes are. Teitelbaum spares none of them, not even the good ones, for as he points out, some have estimated that 40 per cent of major league ballplayers have tried cocaine at least once, and when you go through this book and recall that most of these felons were among the highest paid "entertainers" in the world, and you figure that for every one that gets caught, there's probably at least one or two who didn't, well, your respect for professional sports sinks to an alltime low. I'm expecting next for there to be a sequel showing the crimes and misdemeanours committed by animal athletes like Seabiscuit or Man o' War. They can't have been the sweet, innocent go-getters they've been cracked up to be.
Speaking of crack, your eyes will pop when you read Teitelbaum's facts about crack cocaine and the men (it's mostly men) in professional athletics who abuse it, often striking out and attacking the women in their lives.
Stanley Teitelbaum, you know where all the bodies are buried and you dig up scandals that I had only forgotten by great willpower, as well as some that will live in infamy for the rest of our days, like the 1919 Black Sox scandal. "Say it ain't so, Joe." But nowadays, do boys and girls have any role models to look up to? It must be plain as pitch that athletes are gods and they can do whatever they please, plus the huge sums athletes earn now make the salaries of troubled stars like Ted Williams or Mickey Mantle seem pathetic as they were (as human beings).
But sports gambling, even by those in denial like Pete Rose, who took 14 years to confess to something he didn't even consider a crime, then he whines about he'll never be elected into the Hall of Fame (for what, for making a bundle off his teammates' backs), sports gambling doesn't seem as bad as some of the other crimes. Pervasive violence against women is endemic in the sports world, and just plain vehicular homicide is rampant. In a bit of devil's advocacy, Teitelbaum argues that sometimes athletes have bad things happen to THEM, and he rehearses the case that inspired the movie MUNICH, the kidnapping and murder of Israeli athletes by terrorists at the Munich Olympics (1972). What came to be called "Black September" was--so far--the "most violent assault ever inflicted on athletes." But as he shows, the culture of athletes is thoroughly embroiled in violence so you almost feel that this is the reductio ad absurdam of the whole spectacle.
It's gripping, but, at the end off the day, perhaps there's not enough meat here to make a whole book. Soon enough it just descends into a Homeric litany of "once he was the brightest star of the Yankees" (or whatever) "then he went to the dark side." Maybe it should have been a magazine article or two. As it is, it feels endless, and some won't mind that. You get your money's worth of self-destruction.

Beautiful Tribute to Heroes.......2007-09-13
This book is a beautiful tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. When Rebecca Pepin became an American citizen a couple of years ago, she accepted the judge's challenge to "make a difference." Through her efforts and those of various writers from around the country, fifty-two heroes are profiled. These stories offer just a small sampling of the outstanding men and women who serve in our military. Sadly, our daughter's profile is included as the South Carolina entry. Both Rebecca and the writer, Chuck Walsh, have treated us and Kimberly's story with the utmost care, dignity and respect. Every home should have this book and pass it on for future generations so they will be aware of those before them who have given their lives to help preserve our way of life.
Wonderful Tribute to Our Heroes.......2007-09-13
This wonderfully crafted book profiles one fallen soldier from each of the states. This is truly a remarkable tribute to the brave men and women who paid the ultimate price for Our Freedom. The project is also a wonderful way to raise money for the injured soldiers returning home to resume their lives.
Faces of Freedom.......2007-09-13
A truly magnificently book containing profiles and photo's of 52 of America's fallen warriors that have paid the ultimate price for our freedom during the war on terrorism with proceeds from this book going to 2 outstanding charities. One very special 'brother' 1stLt Ryan McGlothlin USMC(VA) is profiled in this book. But I am honored to call each and every one of our Fallen Heroes a 'brother/sister'. I wholeheartedly recommend this MUST read book.
In memory of all.......2007-09-11
I believe that everyone should have this book. I am the best friend of Holly A. Charette and she was the first female marine to be killed in Iraq. she is from Rhode Island and is featured in this book. this book gives an inside to all who have fallen. If we can do something for our fallen we can at least buy this book. IN MEMORY OF ALL WHO HAVE FALLEN
America and its finest.......2007-09-11
This a beautifully produced book. It is a coffee table-type book, large size, high quality glossy paper, sturdy binding, and a paper cover. The photos of the heroes and their families are large and you can see the faces of those touched most deeply by the war. There are quotes by famous people throughout the book and they were selected and placed very carefully. My son's profile is in this book, and Rebecca has treated his story and all the others with care. The two charities that will receive the proceeds from the sale of the book are noteworthy. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Inspired by the popular, award winning radio series on NPRs Morning Edition, Hidden Kitchens explores the world of secret, unexpected, below-the-radar community cooking across America: a midnight cab yard kitchen on the streets of San Francisco, a secret civil rights kitchen tucked away in a house in Montgomery, freighter food from the galleys of the Great Lakes, the most unexpected hidden kitchen of the homelessthe George Foreman grill. The Kitchen Sisters travel the nation in search of unsung kitchen heros, legendary meals, and cooking rituals in this wild, poignant chronicle of American life through food.
Customer Reviews:
More than just the chronicle of the beloved National Public Radio Morning Edition series.......2006-04-03
Recipes pepper Hidden Kitchens: Stories, Recipes, and More from NPR's The Kitchen Sisters, but Hidden Kitchens is more than just the chronicle of the beloved National Public Radio Morning Edition series. As part of the Hidden Kitchen project, two women called The Kitchen Sisters put forth an NPR hotline and asked listeners, "What food traditions are disappearing from your life? Who glues your community together through food? What should be captured and documented before it disappears or changes beyond recognition?" The response came like an avalanche. Hundreds of humorous, profound, wistful, and heart-rending true stories were submitted; the best of them are presented in Hidden Kitchens, along with recipes, color photographs, and illustrations. From food in the galleys of Great Lakes ships to a secret civil rights kitchen in Montgomery, Alabama, the stories Hidden Kitchens all have in common the zest to create great food, and through taste, help human beings connect with one another. Highly recommended.
Hidden Kitchens: Stories , Recipes and more from NPR's The Kitchen Sisters arrived fast and in excellent condition........2006-03-09

A cookbook worth owning.......2005-11-16
This is definitely a cookbook worth owning. And great for gift giving.

PURE DELIGHT !.......2005-10-21
Someone has said that a kitchen is the heart of a home - it's certainly the heart of this delightful audio book splendidly read by Academy Award winning actress Frances McDormand. Few who saw "Fargo" will forget her command of the screen; few who listen to "Hidden Kitchens" will not be enchanted by her command of the stories, whether they're funny, moving or absurd.
Renowned chef Alice Waters contributes a special commentary in which she notes: "The curious and wonderful thing about the stories in this book is how much they resemble good things to eat. They can be surprising and they can be reassuringly familiar and they can be comforting and they can be outrageous."
How true!
The audio is taken in part from NPR's Hidden Kitchen Hotline, which hundreds of listeners have called with a plethora of messages regarding recipes, kitchen happenings, and cooking successes and failures. There is also a good deal of new material which Nelson and Silva have gathered from a variety of sources.
Listeners will be amazed to hear of the doings in a San Francisco cab yard, or by the lakes of Minnesota, or in a NASCAR kitchen paralleling a race track. And, there's more.
"Hidden Kitchens" is pure delight.
