Stanley.......2007-07-10
My three-year old nephew recently brought home this book back from his pre-school. Stanley is a caveman who is different from the rest of his community. He does not like living in a cave, likes planting and flowers, is courteous to people and kind to animals. The book teaches kids the values of individuality, tolerance, kindness and common courtesy, stuff which might not quite be all too comprehensible to a toddler yet. I plan to read him this book again in a month or two though.
Individuality, Ingenuity, Forgiveness... Stanley Has It All!.......1999-04-23
This is the first book I ever remember reading and it's cute messages have stuck with me all these years. Stanley wasn't like the other cavemen, he liked flowers, didn't like sleeping in cold damp caves and so he did something about it! It's a sweet little story about the merits of being your own person and following through with your ideas and forgiving those people who take a while to come around.

In humorous words and toons, ABC's Kising Coach helps the single gal by stripping the glam from frogs posing as princes.

A dating guide for the mentally retarded.......2007-01-25
I bought this book because the reviews made me think it was clever and funny. It is neither. It is a collection of ultra-short stories about the author's dating experience. Most men "featured" are so ridiculous that I don't think anyone intelligent enough to buy a book online would ever consider dating them. The style is tedious and borders on irritating; every story is forced into a metaphor involving frogs and princes.
I am perplexed by the 5 star reviews. Clever sayings? Cute illustrations? All the tricks needed? Which planet are you gals from? Are there really women out there who need to be told that mobsters, the homeless, or violent men with multiple personalities are not dating material no matter how romantic and cute they are? I am not kidding, there is a "chapter" devoted to each of these categories. Or anyone above the age of 6 who thinks that words like "toadally true" and "Frogopoly" are funny?
Maybe the real purpose of the book is to make women feel better about the men they are dating. I mean if only half of these stories are true then Ms. Anderson must be the unluckiest woman on the dating scene today. She somewhat reminds me of that (fictional) character in one of Douglas Adams' books who never made a right choice in her life and thus became the most sought after advisor in the universe because people could just do the opposite of what she suggested and success was assured. Unfortunately Ms. Anderson doesn't explain how she picks her dates so you won't learn the secret of her failure.
My "favorite" part was where the author lists some euphemisms that married men use to avoid directly admitting that they are married. This list would surely help the esteemed reader to recognize such a "frog." And then she goes on to tell you that she kept dating a married man even after it became clear to her that he was married. Later on, she clarifies: "I'm a normal, healthy woman. I wouldn't want a man who didn't want to jump my bones. But usually I'm not ready without at least a dinner and a movie first." Usually! With high standards like these, it's a miracle that she isn't married to an actual prince and a stable of white horses!
At last, I'd like to share with you the 2-step program I developed for dating (which incidentally works pretty well in other areas of life as well):
1) Be decent.
2) Think.
It doesn't guarantee immediate success but it's surely more useful than anything you will read in this book. And about as funny.
Toadally Ribbeting Reading! .......2006-01-22
This is an extremely clever and creative "take" on the singles scene. Informative, clever and funny. It's fast-paced and fun reading with stories and advice tips that both women and men will enjoy. The author deals with universal situations that every single person can completely relate to - but she does it with style and humor. Lots of laughs, and cute illustrations, too. Unique amidst the myriad of dating books, this one is special.
I loved this book! A Ribbeting read........2006-01-14
A fun look into finding the right man without being preachy. I loved the frog humor and the illustrations are great. I laughed and related to a lot of the dating experiences. I've already found my Prince but this book could have saved me from kissing a few unnecessary frogs in my search.
I have suggested this book to all my single friends.
Toadally Fun, Funny... and True!.......2005-02-26
Some people don't have a sense of humor. If you're one of them, don't read this book... because it is ABSOLUTELY FUNNY and true at the same time. The author nails the traits of guys we've gone out with - and should get rid of fast, but too often don't. If you liked "He's Just Not that into You" - you'll love "Never Kiss a Frog." It's got the same theme, but is presented in a unique way... this time naming the different kinds of guys.... as frogs.
There are clever sayings and cute illustrations - and the names of the frogs are a hoot! Such as Sir Frogalot, Count Frogula and The Godfrogger. And one I've met all too often - The Really-Nice-Guy-But-Really-Bad-Kisser Frog! Every girl who's ever had a bad date can relate. The stories are fun to read and provide many laughs. Sure, it's not a lonnnng book, but hey, neither was "The Rules" - and that didn't provide any chuckles. If you're looking for "deep" and heavy psychological relationship babble - find something else. But for a fun, quick and laugh-filled romp - this is a "ribbiting" book to enjoy and share with your girlfriends!
Perfect Reality Check Book.......2005-02-21
Marilyn Anderson cleverly composes a book that gives us a reality check on that prince charming we have so desperately been in search for. With her tips and recommendations women can now spot a loser miles away. With an array of characters and stories Anderson reveals all the tricks needed to unmask those frogs and focus on the men that are truly worthy. This book makes a great gift for any female regardless of their age. Its easy and fun to read. The best part of it all is the opportunity to enlighten your self and finally stop dating those worthless frogs.
Book Description
The most recent Ice Age is the period during which modern man and mammals appeared.
Prehistoric World Books combine dramatic, scientifically accurate color illustrations with a wealth of factual details based on archaeological findings to give young readers a vivid picture of the exotic succession of animals that inhabited the Earth in the prehistoric era. Dating back to perhaps 300 million years ago, with the earliest-known life forms, the six titles in this series carry the history of animal life forward to man-like creatures such as homo erectus, and finally to prehistoric homo sapiens, or human beings like ourselves, whose origins date back an estimated 200,000 years. Individual species are presented on two-page spreads that show large illustrations of the animal when it was alive, photos of reconstructed fossil skeletons, and a list of descriptive factual details. These books are great sources for elementary school class projects, or simply for fun reading.
Book Description
Before creating humans, God said, "Let us make humans in Our image, after Our likeness." In this playful new twist to the Genesis story, God asks all of nature to offer gifts to humankind--with a promise that the humans would care for creation in return. Then, woman and man were formed from the dust of the earth, in the image of God, and in the image of all of nature. And it was very good, indeed. Whether you're large like the whale, small like the ant, lazy like the lizard, or busy like the bee, this spirited story with its lively illustrations celebrates the interconnectedness of nature and the harmony of all living things.

D & Buggie's Mommy.......2005-06-28
In Our Image: God's First Creatures is a wonderful book for children of all ages and religions. I have read it several times to my daughter preschool class as well as to my son's religious school and grammar school classes. Ms. Sohn Swartz makes the story of the first creatures fun, informative and enlightening for children and parents alike.
In Our Image.......2003-01-21
In Our Image, God's First Creatures, is simply beautiful, and beautiful in its simplicity. What a lovely story to read to children and what delightful pictures accompany it! In this fanciful tale, God asks all of nature and the creatures of the earth to each offer a gift to humankind. We see all creation, including the sun, moon and stars, becoming involved to offer their gifts. Young children will love the ideas voiced or called, chirped, snapped or drawled by the various animals. This could lead to a conversation about even more gifts from more creatures, or a talk about humane treatment of our animal friends. It is pleasing to know that this book is nondenominational and nonsectarian. I highly recommend In Our Image as a perfect book to share with a child.
Beautiful story gives animals an important place with God.......1999-10-03
Spirituality too often dismisses animals and the blessing they are too us. We are taught they are just there for us to use and to eat. I think children are hurt when they are taught that their animals cannot get into heaven, or that they have no souls. This book does not touch on those issues in particular, but it does show God talking to the animals, loving and honoring them, and allowing them to give suggestions for the qualities that humans could have. This book is endorsed by the leaders of the Christian, Jewish and Islamic faiths, so it is a safe gift. Humans are given a challenge toward the end of the book to treat animals in such a way that they need never to be afraid of us. The artwork in this book is exceptionally nice.
Exceptional primer for discussing creation with children........1999-09-07
This book would make a great gift for parents of young children. I used it to help answer the age old question asked by every child, "where did we come from?" The illustrations and the story were captivating to both my children. I highly recommend this book!!
Book Description
This book is a dramatic true account of close encounters with the wild animals of our planet and the surprising events that unfold when one man talks to the animals and stops to listen to their response.

An Interesting Tidbit about Talking With a Raven........2005-09-11
This environmental activist and music composer had one of his essays on nature writing included in THE GIFT OF BIRDS. Not only does he talk and communicate with whales, he also had a relationship with a 'touchy' raven in Northern Canada at the Arctic Circle. Together they took a hike over the Delta plain of the MacKenzie River, the raven leading half the time and serving as a sentinel at his tent in camp.
One of my favorite writers, Poe, felt far more vindictive about his own raven which he considered as a symbol of Death, going back to the Middle Ages where ravens were companions to witches, like the bird which counseled the evil queen in 'Snow White.' The Catholic Church maligned the raven because this midnight-black scavenger has a keen intellect. But talking to one out in the middle of nowhere?
Ravens possess a great variety of calls like parrots, mynahs, and mockingbirds. They are mechanical, like Whitt, the engineers of the avian world. Their calls correlate so closely with social behavior that it could be the rudiments of their own type of language. This underfed one purred like a housecat from a parallel universe down in the baritone range, at half the speed of a normal contented housecat like Star. They had a cat and mouse game on a treasure hunt for walrus ivory one thousand years old. I do believe Mr. Nollman has a good imagination.
First, they made eye contact which was difficult as birds have eyes on each side of the head and humans on a flat plane. He moved his head in concentric bird-like ways, cocking his long beaked face in differing positions. His long, intimidating scimitar beak which was three inches long and black as coal, started making sounds: croaking, squawking and cooing in a whispery, soothing tone. Together they made music with Jim using a Japanese Jew's harp (my dad called it a French harp) -- really a harmonica in syncopated four-four time.
"Immanuel Kent wrote that the human hand is the most visible aspect of the human sensibility." He's right, some hands are more slender and sensitive; in 'The Last Supper' the culprit who turned Christ in at the Garden where he prayed, was pictured as having one female hand.
According to raven protocol, there will be no touching. Human touch is taboo, the kiss of death among wild animals, and showed disrespect' thus, causing a rift. Like E. A. Poe's 'The Raven,' he squawks "nevermore" in Raven language, then forgave the indecent affront and continued to be the human's 'sentinel,' with his black silhouette stooped in a submissive pose. "Both of us striving to cultivate the novel 'camaraderie' that binds us to a middle ground of our own invention." Their relationship was elevated to a new level; "Let bygones be bygones."
Generic man is the meanest-spirited and most dangerous species in all of creation, a personification of evil. Some used birds for target practice. Sometimes a raven makes like a rooster escaped from the coop, sometimes considered a trickster, a comedian of birds. They were the first shamen, a true grodigy among animals. He claims that they had a good talk about the meaning of life, and the raven had written a sentence in his journal! Now, what could a raven write but "Nevermore'?!
Jim Nollman has also written SPIRITUAL ECOLOGY, THE BLEUGA CAFE, DOLPHIN DREAMTIME, ANIMAL DREAMING and THE CHARGED BORDER: WHERE WHALES AND HUMANS MEET. This essay is as good as any Brothers Grimm fairy tale, and as believable. What about ravens?
A singularly fascinating read!.......2002-03-29
The Man Who Talks To Whales: The Art Of Interspecies Communication is the revised and updated edition of "Dolphin Dreamtime," a serious, meaningful, and true account of wild animals and a man who "talks" to them and carefully takes in their responses. Author Jim Nollman is a charter member of the Participants School of zoology, and has gotten physically and emotionally close to grey whales, buffaloes, dolphins, and much more in his search for direct communication between human and animal. A thoughtful book about dialogues and reaching out to better understand who we share this world with, The Man Who Talks To Whales is a singularly fascinating read especially recommended for all who have tried to see and understand the world from an animal's point of view.
Book Description
Man-eating creatures roam, stalk, crouch, wait, leap, slither, swim, crawl, perch, and attack in the pages of this gripping Mammoth Book. Drawn from newspapers and autobiographies, the compelling real-life stories in this volume begin with “Danger in the Home,” which includes not only accounts of attacks by domestic pets and farm animals but also shocking tales of cougars invading towns in Montana and polar bears terrorizing Alaskan suburbs. After exploration “Out on the Plains”—with riveting narratives of big cats from nonfiction adventures like Beryl Markham’s West With the Night as well as of buffalo, bison, dingos, and rhinos—editor Alex MacCormick, herself the author of Shark Attacks, surveys the perils presented by marine predators like orcas, octopi, jellyfish, and giant clams “Beneath the Waves,” including a gory meeting between a shark and a member of the British royal family in the Caribbean. MacCormick then travels “Up the Creek” among alligators and terrifying varieties of river snakes. An extract from David Fletcher’s hair-raising tale with a vengeful 1200-pound grizzly in Hunted highlights the treacheries that lie “In the Wilderness,” while “Jungle Stories” takes the reader into nail-biting accounts of man meeting man-eating enemies ranging from tigers to soldier ants.
Book Description
Man Creatures bridges the gap between two seemingly opposite theories of how the world began. Discover how the story of creation, as found in the Bible, actually supports the theory of evolution. Author Daniel R. Williamson takes the reader on a journey through the days of creation according to the Book of Genesis. By examining the words and asking us to question our standard interpretations, Daniel shows us how to look to Scripture to interpret Scripture. If you are searching for a deeper understanding of God's Word, or if you are one of the many Christians who have struggled with reconciling Biblical interpretation with the evidence of science, this book is a must for you.

Allrecipes taught me to cook..........2007-03-02
I have used a lot of the recipes in this book and I have loved most of them. The thing I like about allrecipes is you can go online and read reviews and suggestions for each recipe you want to make. I will normally choose one that I like and add my special touches and check out the reviews and add some of other peoples touches. When my husband and I first moved in together I was only 21 and could only cook macaroni and cheese. It was before the cookbooks came out and I searched for any recipe that looked good that I could see the nutritional info for. It helped me so much to not only make sure I was eating healthy but really taught me how to cook and experiment. I can't say that I'm a pro now but I never hear my husband complain. The ways I have learned to experiment using the allrecipes postings, reviews and suggestions has been absolutely priceless. If I ever need anything I go there first. I love having the cookbooks so it cuts down on a lot of the searching, I already know these have the highest ratings on the site...so I just choose and look it up and make notes on the reviews. Wonderful!!
not my kind of recipes.......2006-02-04
after reading the previous reviews, i thought it would be safe to order this book. i finally bought a crock pot and am looking for interesting recipes and information on adapting my regular recipes.
there are a few recipes i will probably try, but i was appalled at the number of recipes calling for canned vegetables--for crock pot use--canned soups, dry soup mixes, etc. i was also disappointed at the number of recipes that are very very similar to those in the two other slow cooker books i've bought.
i found the organization of the book annoying. the chapters are based on type of meats, and the slow cooker recipes and the casserole recipes are in each chapter. i would have found the book more convenient if it had been divided by slow cooker/casserole. that, of course, is a personal preference.
the one good thing about buying this book is that now i know that i will not be interested in the other allrecipes cookbooks that are now showing up in my recommendations.
Perfect for "let's make it simple tonight".......2004-09-18
I found this cookbook when I was searching on Amazon for crock-pot and casserole cookbooks because I wanted some new EASY recipes. Voila! Two books in one! Since this book is a compilation of the best rated recipes from the site Allrecipes.com, it's like getting each family's absolute best and favorite recipe. Lots of "secret ingredient" finds! Unlike most cookbooks, as I flip through this one, EVERY recipe is a "winner" that my husband and I would like to try. Since each recipe is from a different cook, the cooking styles vary widely throughout the book, unlike a standard book of recipes written by one or a few cooks. I find that in most cookbooks, all the recipes tend to draw from the same set of ingredients and/or always use the same cooking style, so you've really only paid for a few good recipes.
The only drawback to this book is that there are no pictures, since there aren't any on the website either. But reading through each recipe it is very easy to "picture" the dish. The instructions are clear and concise.
Another thing: Some of the recipes are very similar, i.e. a few different lasagna recipes, a couple crock-pot rib recipes. The good part about that is if you don't quite have everything on hand for the first one, you might for the second one! Knowing that now, I still would have purchased the book anyway. This might have bothered me except I think there are actually a few dozen more than the advertised 200 recipes in the book.
The book is divided up into chapters based on the main meat ingredient (i.e. beef, chicken, pork), including a "Meatless Mains" chapter and a side-dish chapter. The chapters are then further separated by crock-pot cooking or oven-baking. Some recipies are maybe only 4 ingredients (for the VERY busy day) and others might be over 20 and a little more complicated, but unique and tasty as a result!
I'm positive this cook book will be used MUCH more than the others that are collecting dust on my kitchen shelf.
Every Recipe is Wonderful!.......2004-03-17
This has been my most used cookbook. The meals are easy, have few ingredients, and tast fabulous. My husband has even tried to cook from this book--the first time ever. It's a must have.
Husband gives thumbs up!.......2003-11-27
It is time to get out your crock pot/slow cooker and get cooking. Think of the time you'll save. Dinner is ready and (ha) on time! Oh, the delightful smells in our kitchen. Just ordered this book recently. Have only made a few recipes (for example: Easy and Delicious Chicken p. 111 and Slow Cooker Cranberry Pork p. 68), but all were delicious and husband approved. (We have a rule at our home: thumbs up - make it again -or- thumbs down - don't even think about it.) Looking forward to more wonderful slow cooker adventures. One concern is that some don't appear to be low fat or low calorie (I would take off 1/2 star for that), so approach with caution and possible adjustments for health's sake. Yes, it has some very delicious looking casseroles too -- it's just that I'm into slow cooking right now. I agree with previous reviewer that nutritional information would be most helpful. By the way, don't need pictures...just a fork -- yum!
