5 out of 5 stars My daughter's favorite!!.......2007-08-03

My daughter (14 months) loves this video, along with Volume 2. She signs along and I'm amazed how much she picks up without my prompting. She even now sings to the theme song, singing "Baby, Baby" and signing baby as well. I have to agree with the reviewer who wrote their baby crawl/follow Rachel anywhere because my daughter would too!

The great thing about the video is that there are so many signing babies in it. Plus the songs are very catchy! The only down side is that I wish there was more pictures of the actual object along with the babies signing it.

We started watching this 12 month and think it's a great age for it. It might be too fast for babies younger than 12 months.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Useful Book.......2007-01-11

I purchased this book (along with "Everyday Signs") for myself so I could learn enough to teach my six month old twins. This book contains 19 of the most important words for an infant (like milk, more, want, and ball). Now that I know all of these signs, I use them constantly with the babies and know that they will be imitating me very quickly. My three year old also really likes this book because it is very colorful and user-friendly. He is proudly using some of his new signs with the babies - which is such a sweet thing to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Start.......2006-08-29

I have been looking at other books and videos to start teaching my 14 month old child. Tried others and they just could not hold his attention. The video musical approach both holds his attention and allows him to easily mimick the other children. Then in our reading time, he remember the signs as we read the book. A great combination! After about two weeks, I am noticing him using some of the signs and He definitly responds to sign when I do it. I love having a way to communicate at this early stage in his life.

5 out of 5 stars Great starter book for new beginners.......2006-08-28

The Signing Times series is wonderful! I highly recommend the books and the videos. The pictures are easy to understand and very colorful for your baby to enjoy. My baby just signed his first word ("milk") after about a month of exposure to the books and us signing it with him. Very exciting to see your child communicate with you at an early age.

5 out of 5 stars My kids love these books!.......2006-05-30

These books are the perfect companion for the Signing Time DVDs. My 2-year-old twins love to pick up and read these books. My 2 and 3-year-old nephews also love to read these books. There is the picture, the sign, and the word for the concepts on the DVDs. I have no doubt that these books will help my children as they learn to read words without pictures by them.

Here's a genre you don't run into every day--a political time-travel novel. If you enjoyed A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, or Back to the Future you'll definitely want to give this a tumble. A brilliant physicist has discovered a time machine from the 22d century languishing in an obscure Paris technical museum, but is too old to try it out himself. Fortunately he meets up with a bored travel writer (our hero) who is up for the mission. The physicist, a political liberal, has only one request of him: when you go back in time, divert B-movie actor Ronald Reagan from becoming president. The writer makes the trip (several times), meets Reagan (several times), but ... well, let's just say changing the entire course of modern American politics isn't easy. And there's the additional problem of falling in love with a luscious blonde who's been dead since 1938.

Book Description

While in Paris, Gabriel Prince, a somewhat jaded but charming writer of high-end travel guides, is offered the chance of a lifetime -- a trip through time. There's only one hitch: the left-wing owner of the time machine, quantum physicist Jasper Hudnut, wants Gabriel to perform an errand. Gabriel must go back to pre-World War II Hollywood -- a time when Howard Hawks was in his prime and Humphrey Bogart was still waiting for his break -- and somehow derail a young contract actor named Ronald "Dutch" Reagan from his track to the Oval Office.

When signing on for the trip, Gabriel couldn't have imagined the strange turns his life would take. He wouldn't have guessed he'd fall in love with a starlet, or that after landing a job as a screenwriter at Warner Bros., he'd discreetly plunder the future for script ideas. And he certainly couldn't have guessed he'd become friends with Dutch Reagan.

Gabriel learns quickly that altering history isn't as easy as it looks -- especially when he must stay ahead of several sinister characters from the future. Yet, despite numerous decade-tripping detours, Gabriel still has time on his hands -- time to discover what the world would be like had Reagan never been President, and whether or not his own future should ultimately reside in the past.

5 out of 5 stars Best novel I've read in the last five years.......2005-07-03

Read this in 2000 or thereabouts and just finished re-reading it. Absorbing story, very intelligent writing. But it seems to me the ending is supposed to be a kind of cliffhanger. So, come on! Where's the darn sequel??

4 out of 5 stars Stopping Ronald Reagan.......2005-01-04

I enjoyed this book. The main charactter is sent back in time to alter events so that Ronald Reagan does not become President. The use of old photographs works pretty well throughout the book. Its tough to further describe what goes on here without giving away cool parts of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Very competent time-travel story.......2003-10-06

There's a whole sub-genre of science fiction dealing with time travel, often offering ingenious approaches to its paradoxes or deriving humorous consequences from them, and often of interest only to hard-core SF fans.

By contrast, this is a book that I can recommend to those who normally avoid SF, like my wife, as well as to SF fans. The premise is interesting: A man travels back from 1994 in an attempt to deflect Ronald Reagan from the path that led him to become President. The characters are well-drawn--both the real ones from Warner Brothers in the 1930s and the fictional ones--and as a reader I was drawn in to their stories. The storyline is compelling, and kept me up much of the night to see what would happen next.

I won't spoil the result for you, but I should note that if you think that Ronald Reagan was the best thing that ever happened to the United States, you probably won't enjoy the book.

5 out of 5 stars A likeable time travel novel.......2003-09-09

Travel writer Gabriel Prince, the protagonist of Peter Delacorte's Time on My Hands, spends a dreary afternoon in 1994 in Paris's Musée des Techniques. He encounters there the eccentric, 72-year-old Jasper Hudnut, formerly an academic physicist, who is intrigued by a jet-ski-looking machine he finds stashed in the museum's basement. Though Prince is a trifle unnerved by the occasional, near maniacal intensity of Hudnut's gaze, he accompanies his new acquaintance to a nearby café, where the conversation turns quickly to politics--specifically to Ronald Reagan's presidency in the 1980s. Hudnut would prefer a world in which Reagan had never been elected. But unlike your average embittered liberal, content to complain about Reagan's ascendancy, Hudnut means to prevent it.

So begins Delacorte's delightful time travel novel, which is at least as likeable as Jack Finney's classic Time and Again--even for readers who do not share Hudnut's political views. Told in the first person, the book is Prince's account of his journey, at Hudnut's urging, to 1938 Hollywood, where the likes of Humphrey Bogart and Errol Flynn, not to mention B movie star "Dutch" Reagan, can regularly be spotted in the Warner Brothers commissary. But changing history is not as
easy as it looks. Sometimes you don't get it right on the first try. Delacorte's plot becomes deliciously complicated as Prince attempts repeatedly to manipulate events to his satisfaction. The ending of Time on My Hands will leave you pondering the book's twists, and hoping that Delacorte means it when he says he'd like to write a sequel.

3 out of 5 stars Too Much Fluff.......2003-08-10

This was a 300-page novel that was 400 pages long. I mean, there was so much fluff that I often found myself skipping pages because, paragraph after paragraph, nothing was happening. With a good bit of editing, this could have been a very good read. Sorry to have such a minority opinion, but that's the way I see it.

I received the "Signing Time! Flash Cards Set 1" as a gift for my baby girl and she can already sign 12 out of the 19 signs (plus many other signs for animals) and she's only 18 months old! I started signing with her at about 9 months old. Her first sign was "milk." I would recommend the Signing Time! Flash Cards set over the "Baby Signs for..." books, as HALF of those signs are INCORRECT, or as I put, "baby-ified." I would rather have my girl signing the correct signs in public. Who knows, maybe she will be able to comunicate with someone else besides me and her dad when she wants or sees something!

    Book Description

When Grace Snyder, the matriarch of a pioneer Nebraska family, wrote these reminiscences in her eightieth year, she felt she had been blessed "by having no time on my hands." The story of her busy life begins on the high plains of Nebraska, where her parents homesteaded in 1885. She recalls her childhood in a sod house on a frontier that required everyone to pull together in the face of hostile weather, serious illness, and economic depression but that also held its full share of good times.

"As a child of seven and up," writes Grace Snyder, ". . . I wished that I might grow up to make the most beautiful quilts in the world, to marry a cowboy, and to look down on the top of a cloud. At the time I dreamed those dreams and wished those wishes, it seemed impossible that any of them could every come true." But she saw all of them realized.

No Time on My Hands is a remarkable chronicle of the sod house era and of Grace Snyder’s married life on a ranch in Nebraska’s sandhills. From there she finally flies above the clouds to exhibits where her quilts contribute to a worldwide revival of quiltmaking. Mrs. Snyder lived twenty years after the publication of these memoirs in 1963, to the age of one hundred. Her daughter, Nellie Snyder Yost, who helped to write No Time on My Hands, has added an epilogue to this Bison edition.

5 out of 5 stars Little House on the Prairie Uncensored.......2007-04-14

My sister lent me this book to read because it featured some of our relatives, the Holms. I thought this book would be kind of dry, but it turned out to be quite the good read. It's a love story, a story of hard-ships and a story of heart breaking loss. Like Little House on the Prairie it explains much of the techniques that were employed on the frontier to survive, but it also does not spare any of the raw and unpleasant details.

Snyder's desire to create beautiful textile art runs through her life and this book binding together the hardships she faced; helping her move forward. The book is also filled with wit and humor, insightful observations and most importantly hope.

4 out of 5 stars You think YOU have no time!.......2003-06-10

This book is an excellent history of how the midwest was settled - a little like House on the Prairie, but for grownups. From her childhood in a sod house to the Nebraska Sandhills as an adult, she accurately tells the story of what it was like to live in a rapidly changing world. It is amazing to think of how hard life was on the prairie, and yet she found time to make the most exquisite quilts. I read this book because I know of Grace Snyder as a master quilter, and enjoyed this book because of all I learned about the settling of my state, particularly the Sandhill region, of which I knew very little. She brings you into her family, and you rejoice in their accomplishments, and share in their sorrows. This book is a gem.

4 out of 5 stars The autobiography of a pioneer woman.......1998-08-04

As a little girl, Grace Snyder had three dreams: to marry a cowboy, to see the top side of a cloud, and to make the most beautiful quilts in the world. This book is about how her dreams came true. Grace lived at about the same time as Laura Ingalls Wilder, and her story is similar. She tells about her girlhood, her marriage and family, and making the quilts that earned her many ribbons and a reputation as one of America's finest quilters. She tells about good times and bad times, but throughout the book is the joy of a woman who lived the life of her dreams.

              Book Description

Recent years have seen unprecedented attention to faith-based institutions as agents of social change, spurred in part by cuts in public funding for social services and accompanied by controversy about the separation of church and state. The debate over faith-based initiatives has highlighted a small but growing segment of churches committed to both saving souls and serving society. What distinguishes faith-based from secular activism? How do religious organizations express their religious identity in the context of social services? How do faith-based service providers interpret the connection between spiritual methodologies and socioeconomic outcomes? How does faith motivate and give meaning to social ministry? Drawing on case studies of fifteen Philadelphia-area Protestant churches with active outreach, Saving Souls, Serving Society seeks to answer these and other pressing questions surrounding the religious dynamics of social ministry. While church-based programs often look similar to secular ones in terms of goods or services rendered, they may show significant differences in terms of motivations, desired outcomes, and interpretations of meaning. Church-based programs also differ from one another in terms of how they relate evangelism to their social outreach agenda. Heidi Rolland Unruh and Ronald J. Sider explore how churches navigate the tension between their spiritual mission and the constraints on evangelism in the context of social services. The authors examine the potential contribution of religious dynamics to social outcomes as well as the relationship between mission orientations and social capital. Unruh and Sider introduce a new vocabulary for describing the religious components and spiritual meanings embedded in social action, and provide a typology of faith-based organizations and programs. Their analysis yields a framework for Protestant mission orientations that makes room for the diverse ways that churches interrelate spiritual witness and social compassion. Based on their observations, the authors offer a constructive approach to church-state partnerships and provide a far more objective understanding of faith-based social services than previously available.
