Wonderful Pictures / Amusingly SlantedText.......2000-08-02
This slim, oversized paperback is well worth owning. The color and b&w photos of Tibetan people, practices, places and art are wonderful and include ritual items, statues, stupas, giant hillside paintings, prayer wheels, prostrating pilgrims, monks, thankas, the Dalai Lama using phurbas during a sacred sand-painting ceremony, the Potala Palace, colorful lama dancing, and other historical and contemporary depictions of Tibetan Buddhist life. The text is another matter. Hopefully, readers will look elsewhere for an informed introduction to Tibetan Buddhism. One photo of a "mani stone" is upside down, suggesting the editor might have been unfamiliar with the appearance of Tibetan writing. Despite its limitations, it is worth every penny for the unique collection of photos.

A Stellar Book for A Stellar Collection.......2000-11-07
While most authors of Tibetan art books confine themselves to the religious art of Tibet, there is another, fantastic, aspect of Tibetan material culture--the luxury goods for the clergy and nobility. Through the good fortune of having been selected as the recipient of a massive collection formed in the early part of the 20th century and augmented by various gifts and purchases over the intervening years, the Newark Museum of Art has accumulate a stunning collection of these kinds of materials. In her catalogue, the curator, Valrae Reynolds and her collaborators, have made a very impressive contribution to knowledge about these objects. Indeed, these objects that she illustrates make the whole Tibetan culture much more alive and vital. Tibetans did not sit around all day and discuss the best way to meditate on some deity or another. Rather, like people all over the world, they tended their herds or crops, traded (all over Central Asia) they even went on picnics using the tents of the type in the catalog. If the potential reader is interested in the whole of Tibetan culture and not just the religion, this book will make the traditional culture clearer and more understandable than any other previous contribution that I am aware of.

A wonderful juxtapostion of travel and information.......2002-05-28
I highly recommend this book. Clearly, it will resonate
with anyone who has ever been to Tibet, but even more so,
with those who care about the Dharma and about the
treasures associated with it. The book is well written,
balanced -- a marvelously crafted tale of adventure and
caring.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF RESCUE.......2002-04-21
Normally, art conservation is not high on my list of exciting subjects to read about. Pamela Logan has changed my mind. This personal and dramatic story about her commitment to the preservation of a small, remote monastery in the Tibetan region of Kham is unique. Interwoven with short paragraphs on the Buddhist interpretation of the major paintings that "protect" the temple, she tells us a story of how a small group of dedicated "experts", led by a woman who would not give up, and accompanied by an eclectic band of monks, government overseers, and trainees gave new life to the ancient murals of a monastery that were almost forgotten. Filled with the challenges of bringing technical expertise to a remote region where much needed materials are brought in on the backs of horses and supplies mysteriously disappear, the book inspires, entertains, and educates. There are very few books about the mysterious land of Kham. Logan once again takes us there and gives life to a people and a place that few of us will see, but all of us will remember. I give it five stars.
Excellent book about Eastern Tibet and its art treasures........2002-03-07
This book is about an enormous effort by someone who has devoted many years in helping Tibetans in the eastern part of Tibet called Kham. She is Pamela Logan, who could easily have enjoyed a comfortable life with her Ph.D degree in physics, but chose to spend many months per year in her cause, including disaster relief, schooling of rural children, bringing wheelchairs to remote villges, and restoration of Tibetan Art. This book is about the challenges in restoring art in a remote area where travel had to be done by horseback and supplies are very limited, not to mention the bureaucratic problems with the officials.
It's a fascinating book for anyone interested in that part of Tibet, and not just about the art, but about the daily life of Khampa Tibetans, and the land. The author also included some history of that area . There are very few books about this part of the world, which was opened up for foreigners travel only since 2000. I myself travelled there that year and the trip was an eye-opener.
The author's writing is easy to read, even when it comes to technical things about the preservation of murals. If there is anything I have to wish for better, it would probably be that some of the photos are not as clear as it can be, but that just demonstrated one of the challenges the author had to deal with. She did not even have freedom to document the restoration project. Many of her films were confiscated by the police for the silliest of reasons.

Illustrated Atlas of the Himalaya
ASIN: 0810959445 |
Book Description
With nearly a hundred exceptional watercolor illustrations and a comprehensive text, this book unveils, for the first time, Tibetan architecture in all its splendor. Fluent in Tibetan, author-illustrator Michel Peissel spent 45 years investigating the remotest regions of Greater Tibet, embarking on 29 expeditions on foot and horseback to reach the lesser-known fortresses, chapels, and monasteries that he sketched and painted for this exquisite volume.
As we observe in these pages, the Tibetan nation and culture remain very much alive even though the land has been petitioned and appropriated by China, India, Pakistan, and Nepal. From ancient monasteries and palatial fortresses to the new, elegant buildings that are still being built across occupied Tibet, Michel Peissel's magnificent watercolors cannot but foster a heightened appreciation for the subtle beauty and grandeur of Tibetan architecture, confirming the extent of its influence and its remarkable originality.

EXCELLENT.......2001-06-18
This is a hard to find book. If you can get your hands on a copy, you won't regret it! I LOVE THIS BOOK. Full of color illustrations, easy to follow text. Explains rituals and beliefs about Tibetan Buddhism. A must have, even for long time practioners. If not for anything, then for the wonderful photos. I would give more stars if I could.
A tourist's guide to Tibetan Buddhism.......1997-04-20
Even before the Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, Westerners have looked upon Tibetan Buddhism as a source of timeless wisdom and inspiration. Unfortunately, many of us who participate in the practice of the religion find themselves as lost as a deer that stares with confusion into the headlights of an oncoming car. Robert Thurman has been through that already. In 1964, he became the first American to be ordained a Tibetan Buddhist monk, by the Dalai Lama no less! Four years later, he left that life to pursue an academic career; he now chairs the department of Religion at Columbia University. Having lived in both cultures, (not to mention the fact that he is literally a genius) qualifies him as our guide for this magical mystery tour. If you read this book, you will then recognize at least some of what is going on in any Tibetan Buddhist ritual or celebration which you will ever witness. As an added bonus, reading this book will give you gobs of insightful trivia for interesting dinner-table conversation. The pretty pictures make this a suitable coffee-table book for illiterates; this book has something for everyone

Please --- Envy Me!!!.......1998-11-28
Lucky me. I spent the better part of today at the Metropolitan Museum of Art standing before fifty-five incredible 11th through the mid-15th century paintings from one of the great Buddhist civilizations of Asia. I've got to go back tomorrow. Luckily, in the meantime, I have Sacred Visions. If you can, see this exhibition and do not leave the Museum without the accompanying catalogue with wonderful reproductions and essays by noted scholars such as Steven M. Kossack, of the Met, Jane Casey Singer, Tibetan Art Historian, and Robert Bruce-Gardner, from London's Courtauld Institute. One will learn how Buddhism spread from India through Tibet and the effect the religion had on Tibet's people and, hence, its art.The details of the beautifully reproduced works of art are chosen to help illustrate the subtle and important aspects of the Tibetan artist while diagrams, such as for the Vajravarahi Mandala, further explain the iconography. I brought the book into the exhibition to gleen as much information as I could while standing before each work.If you have any interest in Tibet, rush to this exhibition (it closes 1.17.99) to see some beautifully presented mandalas, book covers, etc. If you cannot, you are not "settling" by any means to peruse the catalogue as you will witness Taras, portraits of Lamas, that are not only unique for their beauty and intelligence, but for the remarkable fact that we have them to admire.

Book Description
Guatemala is one of the few places on earth where traditional textile arts from ancient cultures survive: Mayan spinners and weavers still produce the traditional motifs developed by their ancestors, but modern dyes add brilliant, luminous color to their textiles. This book presents 150 superb photographs by Gianni Vecchiato, providing a magnificent view of the textiles people, and daily life of Guatemala. It is truly a feast for the eye and spirit.
Customer Reviews:
beautiful photos !.......2006-03-13
this book has gorgeous photos of Guatemala.
we wish, however, that the photos had better captions to describe them.
Documentary photography.......2006-01-23
I bought this book for my girlfriend who is going to Guatemala for an 8-week field study for her master's degree in anthropology. The pictures are in no way artistic photographs, I would classify them as documentary photos. There are a few that have some drama or depth to them, but most are simply documenting the Guatemalen culture through thier famous colorful weavings and how they use them.
My girlfriend and I wish that the pictures had lengthier captions to explain what we were looking at, as most of the images only have the name of the city they are from. There is a brief and simple introduction at the beginning of the book about Guatmalen culture, the weavings and Mayan history, but the rest of the book is all pictures.
I gave it to my girlfriend to get her excited and motivated for her coming field study, and in that respect I guess the book was a success!
Stunning!.......2002-05-01
I bought this book for my family as we are adopting a child from Guatemala. This was one of the only books with pictures of the culture that I could find, and I am SO glad that I did. I can be rest assured that my son will feel pleasure and pride in his birth-country after looking at the pictures in this book. It is a beautiful, colorful, and rich culture that deserves to be displayed vividly for all to see!
Pot of Gold.......2001-07-13
Stunning images, true to Guatemalan life. Not just "pictures". A window into a beautiful land with colorful people. !EXCELLENTE!
A pot of gold.......2001-06-13
Guatemala Rainbow is just what I hoped it might be and more- the photos are stunning and full of local color. They portray the personality of the Guatemalan people. Having lived in Central America, I can say that they authentically document the typical lifestyle of those outside the capital city, free from United States' influence. This will be a real gem in my collection for Spanish classes as I introduce the students to the culture. The images will help them get a feel for being there.

Now I understand the backlash.......1999-05-28
After reading I Rigoberta, Crossing Borders, and Stoll's account detailing the inconsistencies (lies??) of Rigoberta's life story, I wondered why it was so important to Stoll to undermine her credibility; after all, it seemed in doing so, he might hurt the Mayan people further... Even if she HAD made her account a composite of all poor Mayan women, these things did really happen. The Mayans needed her voice; they were most certainly oppressed. What has opened my eyes to Stoll's motives for discrediting her, however, is the near sainthood conferred upon her by the Left... ...the ease with which the Left, even when they knew her account to be false, continued to perpetuate the lie, even to our children. NO ONE has the right to rewrite history falsely. We DO need to be honest and not let the ends justify the means. We need to admit the truth regarding Rigoberta, get past it, and likewise admit the value of her existence in helping to open the eyes of the world the the Mayan plight. The TRUTH about Rigoberta, really about her PEOPLE, is compelling enough. Honesty will only accentuate it.
