Book Description

This is Marisa’s true story, told by her mother Helen. Marisa was blind, and in order to help with her college expenses, she shared her apartment with the mysterious Raechel. Marisa became concerned when it appeared that Raechel had no past. Marisa had to confront her fears and face the consequences alone. In doing so she was exposed to an alien world existing behind the looking glass. This fantastic story, even its startling conclusion, reads like science fiction, but it’s true. It answers the two important questions of why aliens have not landed on the White House lawn and why they haven’t taken over the Earth.

4 out of 5 stars A Courageous Disclosure.......2005-01-22

Read this book for its content not its literary merit. It is what it purports to be - a personal account of an extraordinary experience and encounter with a person who did not originate on this planet. This is not a 'jump on the sensation bandwagon' book but a personal truth bravely told for the sake of Truth itself, much of which is suppressed by those who feel they can appropriate rights of power over the rest of us. If you think that reality is as you have been taught and is only what you can see and touch, then buy this 'easy read' and be prepared to change your mind. Book 2 explains a lot more.

5 out of 5 stars Significant Ground-Breaking Work.......2004-12-08

This book will blow your socks off. It is the true story of the author's now deceased blind daughter Merisa, whose college roommate Raechel was apparently an alien-human hybrid under government protection as part of a Humanization Project. This is the first book that deals so directly with the issue of whether aliens are cross-breeding with humans. It seems that they are. Not to be missed!

Book Description

This is space opera at its finest, packed with action, romance, drama, and political intrigue.  Llyn Torfinn is a virtual orphan, once found hooked to an artificial reality machine, drugged by sensation and wasting away, with no memories and no past.  Physically, she has made a long and painful recovery, but in a system at war, with a dreaded alien threat lurking in the wings, Llyn's greatest challenge may be to discover her own identity.  For if she cannot come into her own--and quickly--all of humanity may pay the price.

5 out of 5 stars Ring a Bell?.......2007-04-07

I have read and enjoyed Tyers' other work, including the Firebird Trilogy, her Star Wars novels, and Shivering World. If you enjoyed those books, you will like this one, though you may find some familiar content, including:

a psychic minority
a young woman who doesn't know her own powers
an emotionally scarred young woman
mental bonding
new sects of Christianity
an over-bearing mother
a deep appreciation for music

I was particularly impressed in this book by the characters; everyone has his own motivation, and none of them seem contrived. And, there is just the right amount of suspense. The ending was perhaps a bit too neat, and the male lead perhaps a bit too capable. But, I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless. Even if you are not interested in reading a Kathy Tyers book, this is a good Science Fiction book, so give it a try.

4 out of 5 stars Good characters and a good tale too.......2001-01-26

Kathy Tyers as per usual likes to set her characters in "interesting" times. In this story the larger political setting gives our main character Llyn a boost in her quest to find independence from her guardian/therapist when she is both a minor, and a committed mental patient. Despite continuing problems from a prolonged stint in a virtual reality tank at a young age, Llyn is determined to be herself, while her guardian is determined to keep her safe, protected, and controlled. In the end Llyn's problems turn out to be a great and necessary talent. Not as riveting perhaps as some of Tyers' other books, but a cracking good read nonetheless. It will make you think about the difference between protecting and smothering.

2 out of 5 stars An interesting story that doesn't quite come together.......2000-07-15

Llyn Torfinn is in an upscale mental hospital on the planet Antar, cared for around the clock by her therapist and adoptive mother, Karine. Discovered abandoned in an artificial reality tank years ago, Llyn is subject to strange flashbacks which have Karine convinced that the girl is incapable of surviving on her own. Llyn, however, yearns for a wider world, and when political unrest rises between planets, Llyn is finally given the chance to expand her horizons.

My main difficulty with the book is that while the summary I just gave is fairly accurate, Llyn's story -- which I found to be the heart of the book -- is mixed in with a more typical science fiction story of inter-planetary politics, scheming families, and strange aliens. Tyers handles both aspects of the stories well, but in the end I felt that the focus on other characters and their political struggles took away from Llyn's story. The ending was particularly unsatisfying, being predictable in case of the political subplots, and rather deus ex machina (literally, in my mind) in its resolving of Llyn's emotional issues. The emotional resolution might, however, work well for readers approaching the book with a strong religious background.

All in all, I wanted to like this book much more than I did. The political plotting and strange aliens were interesting in their own right; it was only the quick changes between Llyn's personal story and the larger external story along with the ending that dissatisfied me. I'll probably try another of Tyers' books to see if they hang together better.

The book touched on some subject that are sometimes considered taboo.
But, very important to look at them and understand them. Liked the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Reassuring Read.......2006-09-28

This book offers something for everyone. Whether you are new to learning about the near death experience (NDE) or have studied the phenomenon for years, this title holds a number of insights. Filled with multiple personal stories told from several points of view (including friends and relatives of the departed as well as those who've experienced an NDE), the stories are enlightening and comforting.

Many people question what will happen in the hereafter. Perry's book offers reassurance and comfort to those who've recently lost a loved one or are questioning their own existence.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful Read.......2006-06-06

I came upon this book at a time when I was looking for spiritual answers about Life/ Death and why we are here. The book spoke directly to some of the issues I was struggling with as well as areas of related interest. It is written in a manner that is easy to read without being condescending.
I appreciated the stories but even more the information about burial options, living wills and the commentary about how we handle death and the dead in our culture. I found the near death experiences and stories about contacting loved ones on the other side particularly comforting because they come from the experiences of average people, not folks preaching an ideology or trying to make a buck. I was also surprised to find my own experiences and developing beliefs validated by many of them.
My thanks to the author, this is one I'll hang on to.

5 out of 5 stars enlightening.......2006-06-04

The book was serendipity. At age 55, I realized that I was on
the downhill slide, and white knuckling it, on the way down.
My fear of death led me in search of reassurance, answers,
and peace. This book gave it to me. The stories were told by
every day people and by the author as well. I felt a great
sense of relief and peace upon finishing the book.

This is a very powerful book. It has more information than the cover indicates. If you are spiritual this is a MUST READ. Yvonne Perry has a terrific writing style. The book directs you to websites with additional information. Highly recommended.

1879. Volume One of Two. Harrison writes: My main object is not to add another to the already long list of books full of ghost stories, but to classify some of the authenticated apparitions of our own and past times, to examine the conditions under which the spirits of human beings are seen, to show that the spirit of man can sometimes temporarily leave the earthly body, and to seek to draw only those conclusions which well-proved facts warrant. Thus may laws and principles be deduced, to guide future explorers of the realm between the known and the unknown, in relation to spirit existence.

You cannot find these type of books in the Midwest.
This was a gift to my friend that lived in the midwest but has now located to Arizona that is fortunate enough to have these beautiful trees!
The rest of the book is excellent and comparable to what I already have, but this has figs! Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for those that want to learn to preserve food safely at home.......2006-06-09

A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry". This book is exactly what I expected it to be, a vast collection of information regarding canning, and freezing, curing, and drying food.

I purchased this book last year after I decided to eliminate all preservative, chemicals and dyes from our food and had difficulty locating reasonably priced products that were prepared naturally. I remembered that my parents had gone through a hippy phase when I was young and found an old version of this book at their house. Since they wouldn't give up the book I bought my own copy and have learned a lot on preserving food from this book.

The book is subdivided as follows:
                1. What is It?
                2. Why Foods Spoil
                3. Altitude and Metrics
                4. Fair Warning
                5. Common Ingredients and How to Use Them
                6. The Canning Methods
                7. Canning Fruits
                8. Canning Tomatoes
                9. Canning Vegetables
                10. Canning Meats
                11. Canning Seafood
                12. Canning Convenience Foods
                13. Getting and Using a Freezer
                14. Freezing Fruits
                15. Freezing Vegetables
                16. Freezing Meats and Seafood
                17. Freezing Convenience Foods
                18. Jellies, Jams, and Other Sweet Things
                19. Pickles, Relishes, and Other Spicy Things
                20. Curing with Salt and Smoke
                21. Drying
                22. Root-Cellaring
                23. Putting By Presents for Christmas

This book has been able to answer any question that I have had about canning and freezing food. If you are looking for specific meat preparations I would suggest that you purchase "Charcuterie" by Michael Ruhlman instead as it is much more thorough.

This book contains many recipes for jams and jellies, and includes a section on reduced sugar and no sugar fruit preserves. They have also included recipes and directions for fruit spreads with and without added pectin that is very helpful.

In the section on smoking they address both hot and cold smoking and give you directions for making your own smoker that reminded me a lot of the Alton Brown episode on smoking. I have not tried this, but it seems very straightforward and this might be on my agenda this summer if I can get my husband interested in the process.

Whether you are looking for how to make pickles, can tomatoes, or make jams and jellies this book has a little something for everyone. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to give home canning or freezing a try.

4 out of 5 stars Geat Supppplementary Resource.......2006-04-08

I found the book Putting Food Bye to be an excellent supplementary resource for the amiture food canner or dehydrator. I found it to be especially useful if you want to learn about canning food in metal cans. Few other resources cover this topic as well. The book is well written and easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Required classic for the kitchen.......2003-12-30

Home preserving is best done with a guide such as this; if you don't understand how acids, heat, cleanliness are involved in preserving food healthfully, you can get into some deep trouble.

If you garden, this is a good book to have to process your excess produce. Have you ever made ketchup? It's wonderful to season your own. Homemade relishes and pickles are great gifts if you are good at making them. Home-canned tomatoes taste great. This is a classic and a must-have for the home canner.

                5 out of 5 stars Food preservation bible--not just canning--for modern times!.......2003-11-14

This book takes you from knowing nothing to truly UNDERSTANDING not just how to preserve foods, but how each method works and the pros/cons of each method.

Most of the information is on canning and freezing (including different packaging and wrapping techniques), but they also go into salting, smoking, drying, and root cellaring. They don't expect you to live as if it were the 1800's either. They incorporate the use of vacuum sealers and microwaves--and trying to preserve food in the confines of the modern home. Likewise, they will also explain how to create the old types of environments or something that will work just as well.

To be honest, there is more educational information than there are recipes. And even the recipes they give are educational--covering jellies, jams, butters and pickling. These are prime opportunities for failure without appropriate instruction--and that's what they provide. Explaining how it all works--which is not common sense! It takes some learning!

They also explain the best preservation method for the food (often right down to a variety of fruit or veggie, or cut of meat) and how the preservation method used will alter the food. They also tell you what the food will be best used for after preserving. For instance, if freezing cabbage means it will never be crisp again they warn you about this and tell you not to expect it to be used for salads. Things like that make a difference--especially if you didn't grow up in a household where these were items of common knowledge!

4 out of 5 stars Natural Food Preservation.......2005-08-05

This book is a guide to preserving fruits and vegetables while avoiding processed sugar. Although the book refers to honey in the title, not all the recipes use honey, but they all seek to preserve food in natural ways, without sugar or other questionable additives. The book begins with a short introduction describing canning methods and equipment. Then there are chapters on jams, preserves, butters and conserves, canned fruits, pickling, and dried foods. An appendix contains useful charts with amounts of food to be grown and canned for a family of six, a calendar showing which produce items are likely to be in season when, and some tips for canning. Specific canning tips for different techniques are also included in each of the chapters. There is an index.

I've tried several of the recipes in this book and found them to be straightforward to follow, and the end results have been tasty. Geiskopf includes a nice selection of berry recipes and some for rhubarb as well. Her recipes for dips to be used with dried foods as alternatives to sulfur preservation are particularly useful. However, the introductory material about canning can be a bit confusing. The explanations and instructions are a little hard to follow. Fortunately, clear descriptions of canning methods can be found in numerous other books, so if you use this book just for the recipes and get your canning information elsewhere, you should have no problems.

                Book Description

Engagingly written and richly illustrated, Putting Meat on the American Table explains how America became a meat-eating nation -- from the colonial period to the present. It examines the relationships between consumer preference and meat processing -- looking closely at the production of beef, pork, chicken, and hot dogs.

Roger Horowitz argues that a series of new technologies have transformed American meat. He draws on detailed consumption surveys that shed new light on America's eating preferences -- especially differences associated with income, rural versus urban areas, and race and ethnicity.

Putting Meat on the American Table will captivate general readers and interest all students of the history of food, technology, business, and American culture.

American wasn't born a meat-eating nation: it evolved from colonial to modern times and was as much influenced by technological developments and processing and production advancements as by consumer tastes or meat availability. PUTTING MEAT ON THE AMERICAN TABLE: TASTE, TECHNOLOGY, TRANSFORMATION is a lively study which will also earn a place on the college bookshelf for its scholarly side in examining how new technologies have advanced American meat. Using consumption surveys, chapters provide lively insights into evolving American eating habits.

                4 out of 5 stars not a book for a vegetarian.......2006-01-24

Gosh, I got very hungry reading this book. Horowitz gives an engaging guide to how meat consumption has intertwined with American culture throughout its history. He discusses many aspects. Like the social ritual of a traditional Sunday roast. Which is now perhaps mostly a folk memory. You should get some appreciation of how cheap meat really is these days. When most families can afford to have meat at least once a day. The Sunday roast harks back a century or more, when meat at a meal was indeed an occasion to savour.

Horowitz explains how the increasing mechanisation of American agriculture has lead to ever cheaper meat. A huge amount of research and effort has gone into improving the yields of livestock. Especially chickens. The rise of the agribusinesses like Tyson's has been due in to small part to their success in optimising what are now factories for meat production.

Perhaps this is not a book for the vegetarian.
