4 out of 5 stars Chandler-light.......2006-09-16

This book is a good sequil to The Big Sleep, and is much easier to read. You can picture Bogart (albeit 6 foot tall and 190 lbs) trouncing around southern California in search of the missing Carmen Sternwood, with Bacall having a bit part as sister Vivian. Parker is faithful to the characters, and does a nice job. This was a fun read.

4 out of 5 stars Sequel to "Big Sleep" 50 years later: fun and true to form Philip Marlowe !! .......2005-10-10

We really admire Parker for having the knowledge and creativity to "dream" up a new Philip Marlowe some fifty years after the original "Big Sleep" {1939} was published. We may be influenced by having just recently read Chandler's original first novel (so it was fresh in our mind), but we thought Parker did a great job. First, his use of literal quotation from the original made an effective prologue as well as effective transitions for the plot line that continued in his sequel. Second, his replication of Marlowe, with which he had prior experience in finishing Chandler's last work, Poodle Springs {to which Chandler only contributed the first four chapters}, was so credible we barely missed the masterful prose of the series creator.

In the story, the younger of (now deceased) General Sternwood's daughters, Carmen, is missing from a sanitarium to which she was committed as part of the outcome of "Sleep". Her sister Vivian, with whom Marlowe eventually became infatuated enough to bed, wants her found, but turned to another of her friends from the first book, Eddie Mars, to find. Meanwhile Norris the butler hires Marlowe to do the same, and ironically he and Eddie form an unlikely alliance at times to pursue matters. Before it's over, a scheme to make a millionaire out of the sanitarium founder, in cohorts with a wealthy land baron recluse, is uncovered; as is the perpetrator of a couple more killings along the way. Naturally the urbane but dogged Marlowe finds time in between drinking, smoking, and wowing attractive women, to unravel all and ride off into the sunset as a hero.

Some might quibble that Parker is a mediocre substitute for Mr. Chandler, but who might be up to the task of stringing wordcraft in that author's stead? We found Parker's plot quite entertaining in its own merits and his ability to credibly bring Marlowe back to life after fifty years quite remarkable. We enjoyed the book immensely, and found it no unworthy companion to his main man Spenser. Indeed, we commend this book to Chandler and Marlowe devotees!

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not best, by Parker..........2002-07-24

If you know have ever read a book by R.B. Parker you will find yourself in a familiar environment in this book. Parker sets himself a brave task in writing a sequel to Raymond Chandler's "The Big Sleep" and succeeds in pulling it off superbly. Parker is one of the rare modern writers who still believe that characters can have principles, and live by them even in extreme circumstances. Although this is not Parker's best work, I still recommend this book in which, in my opinion, Parker surpasses one of the legends of detective fition, Raymond Chandler.

4 out of 5 stars The Big Almost........2001-08-08

Robert B. Parker comes the closest to the attitude of Phillip Marlowe. Stuart Kaminsky writes his Toby Peters stories more for laughs. Andrew Bergman (The Big Kiss-Off of 1944) had flashes where he nailed the speech, but was more in keeping with Spillane overall. William Nolan (The Marble Orchard) copies some of the dialogue- and I do mean copies- in his enjoyable Chandlerian mystery. And there are others, myriad others. But none of them get it quite right.

Neither does Parker, but he comes the closest. He matches the world-weariness, the cynicism and the reluctant romanticism, finding the knight in tarnished armor that is Marlowe. Yes, he very nearly matches the attitude. But he falls short with the style.

Chandler nearly ruined literature for me, because everything about every line of his writing'- the dialogue, the descriptions, the societal observations'- is so incredibly entertaining. Nothing can meet its rarified level. So I try to make due with 'close-enoughs.' When I finish a Chandler novel, I am depressed it came to an end; when I closed Parker's Perchance To Dream, it elicited a 'That's all there is?'

In P2D, the narrative is much too straightforward. The villain was clear from the first quarter of the book and there were few mysteries to solve. No convoluted Black Mask motives, no people impersonating other people. Marlowe doesn't even get sapped until distressingly late in the story. There is only one real subplot; then that ties in with the other so they can both be too-neatly wrapped up. It becomes clear what Marlowe must do and he sets out to do it. Then, very abruptly, the novel is over. It is strenuous but not complex. There is no last minute twist because the story followed a Spenser-like plot; it more resembles the structure of the first Lethal Weapon movie than it does that of The Big Sleep.

And as 50 years have passed between the publishing of the original novel and this one, some subtlety has been forsaken. Parker shows welcome restraint given the subject matter, but Carmen's decadence seemed in Chandler's novel somehow exotic and vague. In P2D, as postmodern psychology and sensibilities are applied, it seems cold and open and dirty.

Still, there is a lot that is great in this book. The flashbacks and tips-of-the-hat to the original novel come off better than they might have. We root for Marlowe and hiss the villain, as we should. Parker has penned an abundance of juicy wisecracks and has figured out how to end his chapters in the bittersweet tone much like Chandler accomplished. And the story, despite what I said above, is furiously-paced and viscerally entertaining. It just isn't Chandler.

Perchance To Dream is a good novel; but when someone slaps the words 'Sequel to The Big Sleep' on the cover of anything it had better be blackjack-to-the-head *great*. The fault isn't really Parker's' he came close, and his was a nigh-impossible task. After all, who can be as great as Raymond Chandler?

P.S. Poodle Springs was a more accurate tribute, if a less actionful read.

3 out of 5 stars half-hearted romp through the mean streets.......2001-06-23

a little background is in order (as I understand it): the heirs of Chandler approached Parker to finish the Poodle Springs manuscript, and part of the deal was that he had to write one more Marlowe story. 'Dream' is that one more. The job was almost impossible to begin with (Chandler's drinking had taken the edge off his talent by that time, and the Poodle manuscript got off on the wrong foot to boot), the Chandler fans ripped it for not being up to Chandler's prime (which even Chandler himself wasn't, towards the end), the Parker fans ripped it for not being true Spencer, and Parker felt the strain of wearing another man's shoes. So by the time he got to this one, my guess is, his heart wasn't in it. He's said he'll never do another Marlowe book. That said, it's still good to have Marlowe back, cracking wise and cruising the mean streets again. I liked it better than Chandler's "The Pencil", and better than some of the Spencer books! I just wish Parker would reconsider, and do another Marlowe book without the pressures and constraints of a contract. Marlowe, like Sherlock, is a detective who deserves to live on after his progenitor, but the return of L.A.'s hard-boiled prose-poet is, perchance, just a dream.

4 out of 5 stars Finally a good "Nightmare" book besides the first one!.......2006-09-28

I really enjoyed this book. I think Natasha Rhodes knew the material and at least gave a dman about the characters she was writing about. i really liked that they brought some of the characters in from the movie series (Nightmare 4 and 5 respectively). There were a few starts and stops and some small editing errors, but all in all and enjoyable book. I was glad that the series got its darkness back, because I wasn't impressed with "Dreamspawn" which took the book to California (?!?!) and Protege was interesting but the books still lacked what makes "A Nightmare on Elm Street" interesting. I recommend "Perchance..." to any Freddy fan!

3 out of 5 stars Perchance to a Mild Dream.......2006-04-11

Natasha Rhodes creates some interesting characters, and has a flair for the Kreuger character (which has been missing in a few books from this series).

While she writes an excellent book, this novel (like it's predecessor Protege) tries too hard to reinvent the series.

Nightmare on Elm Street is Nightmare on Elm Street is Nightmare on Elm Street. That fact seems to be lost on some of the Authors in this series. I do respect the obvious effort Rhodes puts into this book, it's overall feeling was far from the NoES story.

My major issue may come from Kane. A character who could have shown quite a bit of potential, only to end up at a very predicatable ending.

FK deserves more than this book or Protege was willing to give, and hopefully, the line returns to the root of the NoES Dream. Run your sidestories, have your interesting plots, the fact is, Kreuger is a one trick pony.... and some of us still enjoy that trick!

5 out of 5 stars Worth it!.......2006-03-13

Very worth every penny it was great it had charector development and still alot of kills too never boring a sort of glued to the pages type book you can never stop in between a chapter and never stop after a chapter for curiosity and incase you didnt know one of the main charectors is Jacob the child from "Dream Child" his mother is of course mentioned once or twice but he never really get her "in it"

5 out of 5 stars Dream Child.......2006-03-05

Since reading Protege, which I thought was the best Nightmare novel yet, I had high expectations for this one. I absolutely love this novel. It is well written and has a nice slow pace so you won't get lost or bored.

If this was made into a movie it would go great between Nightmare 5 and Freddy's Dead. The story has to deal with Jacob (from the Nightmare 5 - The Dream Child movie) and what happened to him years after the events of the Dream Child. I don't want to give away any spoilers but it does mention his mother (Alice) and father (Dan).

This book has some surprising twists added to it making it a more interesting read.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting if imperfect story........2003-10-21

Some readers of Star Trek fiction might find the lack of action in this story objectionable; I'm not one of them. It is a fascinating story about the Enterprise crew doing exactly what they're supposed to be doing: exploring and making first contact with new races. I dock it one star mostly for the rather tiresome and pointless subplot involving Wesley Crusher and two of his peers; the less I see of Wesley, the happier I am, but other than that, this story was nearly flawless.

4 out of 5 stars STNG #19 Perchance to Dream - An engaging tale!.......2003-09-08

"Perchance to Dream is author, Howard Weinstein's seemingly third and final Star Trek The Next Generation title. I say seemingly final since he hasn't written any STNG novels since 1991 and his last Star Trek novel altogether was 1994's Star Trek "The Better Man." This to me is a shame as I've enjoyed the Star Trek stories of his that I've read so far and it would be nice to see him make a return to either the twenty third or twenty fourth centuries.

        The premise:

The author sets up an interesting premise in which the Enterprise is sent to Domarus IV which is an M Class planet but with no indigenous intelligent life. Data, Troi and young Wesley Crusher launch in a shuttle to the planet but are captured by Tenirans, who have claimed the planet for themselves. While attempting to negotiate for the release of his crew, Captain Picard himself disappears, quite spectacularly. He suddenly finds himself on the planets surface with the Tenarin captain. They both soon realize that they must work together as they find that they're not alone on the planet.

        What follows from there is an engaging story that I found to be a quick Star Trek read. I recommend this Star Trek The Next Generation novel to any and all fans of the genre. {ssintrepid}

        4 out of 5 stars ST-TNG: Perchace to Dream.......2003-06-23

Star Trek - The Next Generation: Perchance to Dream written by Howard Weinstein is a lighter Trek novel... Oh, there is some suspense and intrigue, but it doesn't come out and grab you by the ears and makes you want to read this book in one setting.

In this book there is a planetary life force which can move mountains and dig valleys in a single day, make new oceans and change the course of rivers. With all of this said, this race is rather a benevolent and what they really want is to communicate with the humanoid species that are now claiming the planet for their own the Tenarins.

On a rountine survey of the planet Domarius IV, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the Starship Enterprise crew encounter the Tenarins as they try to hijack an Enterprise shuttle with Data, Troi, Wesley Crusher and two of his friends as they leave the planet with some interesting soil and rock samples. Caught up in the Tenarin tractor beam the shuttle is about to break up when it disappears in a flash of colorful light and is transported to a subterranian location.

Now, with the Enterprise closing in, the Tenarin captain and Jean-Luc Picard also become missing in a flash of colorful light and are transported to the planet's surface. All of the time under the watchful eye of the planetary intelligence which are diamond shaped with light of different colorsul coursing though them.

Until the planetary intelligence discovers how to communicate with the humanoids things become quite mystifing. Data is the link by which the planetary intelligence gains the knowledge to communicate. All along the planetary race that can move mountains is preparing the planet for humanoid life and as they begin to wake-up from their one-thousand year sleep, their mission is about to become complete as the Tenarins looking for a home are invited to stay.

This was an interesting read and kept my attention, but it wasn't one of the best TREK novels as the mystery, intrigue and action-adventure was rather lacking and some areas of the story bogged down to a near halt.

All in all, this story is a good 4 stars it could have been written with more action-adventure and intrigue to carry the reader to the ending.

4 out of 5 stars A "Second Tier" Star Trek novel with a reasonble plot.......1998-05-12

Not the worst Star Trek novel I've ever read, but not the best either. It lacked tension. There was never a feeling that anyone was really in danger. I felt the inclusion of Wesley's young friends superfluous. It felt flat though not entirely boring.

        4 out of 5 stars Metaphoriclly speking........1997-06-17

I must say there our times when the book is better than the show. This is one of those times. It's a good thing Picard does alot of reading or the show and the book would have had unhappy endings. I enjoyed this book so much I read it twice in the same week. After which I brushed up on my Shakespeare. This book is very good reading for all

In travelling the world to photograph his favorite type of image, Magnum photographer Ferdinando Scianna seems to have had little chance to do much sleeping of his own. Over the course of three decades, he has snapped thousands of images of sleepers--a Balinese farmer in her fields, a napper on a rocky crag in Bolivia, a dog in the shade of a laundry line in Egypt, a barefoot man along an Italian pier, an infant on a woman's lap in India. Looking at the faces of all these sleeping people--rich and poor, young and old, comfortably ensconced in beds and arranged awkwardly on the ground--one can't help but wonder where their dreams transport them.

Scianno's rich black and white images are reproduced in warm sepia tones alongside aphorisms and phrases about sleep penned by such writers as Ernest Hemingway, Dante, Edgar Allen Poe, and Christina Rosetti. One phrase in Sir Philip Sydney seems to capture the spirit of the collection:

Come, Sleep! Oh Sleep, the certain knot of peace, The baiting-place of wit, the balm of woe, The poor man's wealth, the prisoner's release, The indifferent judge between the high and low.

His book of Religious Festivals in Sicily is truly phenomenal, abundant with transcendent photographs, giving a real feel for his subject. This book has beautiful photographs, but goes nowhere.

4 out of 5 stars Well rounded anthology all about dreams........2002-12-06

This was a terrific fantasy anthology all about dreaming. Most of the stories are 4+ or better with only a dud or two. I bought this one because of the stories by Josepha Sherman & Susan Sizemore but ended up enjoying many of the other authors too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent macrobiotic cookbook.......2005-10-05

I own multiple macrobiotic cookbooks, and this one is the one I come to time and time again. Learning about the specialty ingredients in macrobiotic cooking is tricky, but once you have found a source of these ingredients, the recipes in this book are simple and tasty.

The thing I like most about this book is the simplicity of the recipes. Most of the recipes call for the same 4-5 cooking styles, with the same 4-5 condiments. Many of the recipes in this book have become staples of my diet.

I am not a 100% practicing macrobiotic, but when I feel the need to eat healthy and lose weight, I always turn to this book as a refresher course to how to eat healthy.

This book is an excellent companion book to "The Macrobiotic Way" by Michio Kuchi. Another book I highly recommend is "The Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics". These three books are used more than any other in my cookbook library.

5 out of 5 stars The authoritative reference on macrobiotic cooking .......2005-02-25

From the teacher herself comes a huge book which distills more than 35 years of macrobiotic cooking and teaching. This book covers everything on the subject, from food preparation prior to cooking (an area most American cooks know little or nothing about) through "Medicinal Cooking and Home Cures."

Menu planning is included to incorporate acid/alkaline balancing which is so critical to the macrobiotic practitioner's path to total health.

I predict that those who study macrobiotic cooking will never again be able to enjoy fast foods such as meat burgers, french fried potatoes, sodas, chips, etc. They will KNOW when food is creating an imbalance and why. They will understand at what point disease kicks in and how to reverse it.

This book is required for all who seek health, harmony, and peace. We develop an appreciation and understanding of the role which whole foods, organically grown and properly prepared, play in our physical, mental, and spiritual health.

I might point out that prescription drugs, refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, dairy, and meats (other than fish) are huge contributors to imbalance and have no part in macrobiotic health. In a diet consisting of 50% whole grains, 25% vegetables, and the remainder made up of beans, sea vegetables, fish, and soups, it is amazing to see how many creative recipes are included in this 414 page book.

Buy it. Everyone needs this education.

2 out of 5 stars Macrobiotic cooking does not necessarily cure cancer.......2003-04-10

I bought Aveline Kushi's "Complete Guide to Macrobiotic Cooking" after reading another book called "Recalled by Life" about a doctor who claimed to have been cured of cancer by following macrobiotics. This book does a good job of explaining macrobiotic cooking, but it is important to note that the author Aveline Kushi died in 2001 from cervical cancer which had spread to her bones. While I do believe that diet can help in the fight against cancer, Ms. Kushi's death makes me wonder whether macrobiotics is the proper diet to follow.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-06-03

Proper macrobiotic cooking unlike some other books which mix the pure foods with junk food. So many recipes...very thorough

5 out of 5 stars The Best There Is!.......2000-01-15

Aveline Kushi's COMPLETE GUIDE TO MACROBIOTIC COOKING is the BEST book available of its kind. What distinguishes it from other books on the subject is its emphasis on explaining the philosophy behind the macrobiotic approach to cooking and to eating. In reading the background information, I learned a great deal about the WHYS and HOWS of macrobiotics. With regard to the recipes, they are simple and well-explained. There is a detailed explanation of utensils and of ingredients, as well as of the differences among different food types and their nutritional value. Insights into the health benefits of a macrobiotic way of life are also very well explained.

When I took a brief summer class on macrobiotics, the instructor said that this was the best book on the subject. Five years and about twenty-five books later, I would have to agree with him. This is the book that I ALWAYS come back to, and the one which I buy for my friends.

Another good book on the subject is Kathleen Turner's THE SELF-HEALING COOKBOOK. It was actually the first book I read on macrobiotics, and it was the one that drew my interest to this area, and is now also one which I regularly purchase for my friends who have an interest in this area.

While not totally macrobiotic, the books by Annemarie Colbin are also excellent and address similar cooking/eating topics.
