Book Description
Born was a child of the rain forest that covered Midworld, part of the primitive society that the peaceful jungle planet had sustained for hundreds of years. He was wise in the ways of his world, and he knew well the precarious natural balance that governed all things.
Then one day the aliens came. Giants. They knew nothing of the Upper or Lower Hell -- and they cared less. Born had risked his life to save them, to guide them through the myriad tangled boughs, past unseen, unsuspected dangers lurking in the underbrush. But worse than their ignorance of how to survive, the aliens had plans for Midworld, plans that could utterly destroy the globe-spanning forest that his people called home.
As the days passed, Born realized his mistake. And as he had once hunted only to live, he knew now that he would be forced to live only to kill...

Wonderfrul Creatures.......2007-06-16
No one describes a creature like Alan Dean Foster! Hands down, the very best. His silverslith sent shivers down my arms. I've read it many times, and I even use it to teach my students how to write a descriptive paragraph. His mind knows no bounds when inventing animals, plants, and humans. Probably my favorite fantasy book of all times (though Mid-Flinx) comes in a close second.
Excellent !.......2006-03-06
Midworld (1975) by Alan Dean Foster - 179 pages - rating: 8.5/10
One of Alan Dean Foster's earliest and most enjoyable novels.
Compelling , straightforward and exciting. You will find yourself immersed both in the jungle world of the plot as well as in the story itself.

You'll read this one again and again........2005-08-15
This book, like Heinlein's Starship Troopers, is a book I keep reading again and again over the years, and for similar reasons. As previous reviewers have stated, this book is quite compact, yet rich and complete, and operates on several levels. It's the description of a fascinating world. It's an adventure story. It's a character study. It's a parable. The concept is intriguing, and the characters are multi-faceted. It's a compact classic, and until today I hadn't realized that Midworld had shown up in any other books. Those books (all of them) are going on my Amazon Wish List today.
Read this book, and read Starship Troopers. Both are SO much more than bugs-in-space. They're worth far more time than they actually take to read.
Amazing world-building.......2004-12-22
No one intended to settle the nameless planet covered by seven levels of steaming tropical forest. A colony ship wound up orbiting it by mistake, giving the stranded passengers no other option except to land and try their best to survive. A few of them did that for long enough to have children. Now, generations later, their adapted descendants include a hunter named Born. He's a curious young man, so much so that his people call him mad. For what good is curiosity, in a place where seeking to see the sky involves going to a place called Upper Hell?
When two giants drop out of the sky, only Born cares enough about the mystery to climb down through the trees and rescue them from their crashed flitter. Although they know less than the smallest child about surviving in this perilous place, Born manages to keep them alive long enough to reach the relative safety of his Home Tree. His tribe thinks it's seen him for the last time when he sets out to guide the strangers to the "station" from which they say they came - no one ever traveled that far before. As Born learns more and more about these fellow humans whose thinking is so very unlike that of his own people, and as he discovers how they mean to use the awesome power they've brought to Midworld, the young hunter's curiosity turns to horror. These invaders have to be stopped from carrying out their plans. But how?
The world-building in this book amazes me. Parable and adventure tale, it works well on both levels; and it ends with a chilling twist that turns what had looked predictable squarely onto its head. Followers of Foster's Flinx books - the more recent ones, especially - will find some delicious foreshadowing in that twist.
Fantastic classic.......2001-04-27
I've read nearly everything Foster has written and this book is my absolute favorite (Into the Out of is a close second) The flora and fauna of this world is what grabbed my imagination and the different levels of the rain forest is very well thought out. I'd love to see Jim Hensons production company make this into a movie

Customer Reviews:
The best sandwich book I've purchased!.......2007-08-05
From the book, "Great sandwiches start with great ingredients, homemade mayonnaise..." The condiment recipes are my favorites (Oven-Roasted Tomatoes (I can eat these everyday), Hot Mustard (awesome), Roasted Garlic Mayonnaise, Lemon Mayonnaise, Balsamic Roasted Garlic--just to name a few). They add so much to the sandwiches.
In addition to the great recipes there is a chapter called "The Basics" in which they explain all the different breads, cheeses, meats, oils and vinegars they use in their recipes. It is quite informative.
I think this would make a great gift for anyone interested in cooking or eating :o)
Great Taste !.......2007-06-29
I just got a Panini maker and was looking for more recipes than what came with the unit. I purchased this one - have made 6 varieties of panini and overall, they were all great ! The book also introduced me to various cheeses as well as to some fantastic accompaniments such as Sun-dried tomato pesto; pickled onions; Peperonata to name a few. In addition to Pananis', there are also recipes for antipasti, salads, tramezzini and bruchetta. This is a book well worth having.
Recipe didn't work.......2007-06-12
The first item I made from this book, Oven-Roasted Tomotoes, didn't work at all. I would be glad to change my rating of this book if someone knows what went wrong. It said to roast at 275 degrees for 20 minutes, baste again with Balsamic (for a total of 1/2-cup), then cook another 20 minutes. Nothing happened after the first 20 minutes because the temp was too low. My oven was pre-heated. I checked for a recipe on Epicurious, and it had baking at 350 for 1 hour... not sure what happened, but it doesn't instill confidence in the book.
Living la dolce vita.......2007-05-29
I would not have thought I would be persuaded to purchase a "cook book" with the abundance of recipes available to me for free on the internet, but I'm glad other reviewers convinced me. I read it cover to cover as soon as it arrived-and my mouth watered the entire time! It really is lovely and full of easy, delicious recipes that exploit the fact that simple ingredients really are the basis of good cooking. I don't think any foodie would be disappointed to add this book to his/her collection.
Make Your Own Panini - Just Like you Found in Italy..........2007-04-16
Oh, if you could smell the heavenly scents emanating from my kitchen right now, you would know why I'm so enamored of this latest addition to my cookbook collection !
I first fell in love with panini during an escorted tour to Italy two years ago that involved several hours in the bus on alternate days. The highlight of the bus trip was the mid-day stop at the ubiquitous roadside restaurant chain known as AutoGrill - far more varied and satisfying than the typical fast food chain restaurant choices that you find on the interstate in the U.S. Every AutoGrill featured fresh-made panini, assembled with just a few fresh and simple ingredients, quickly melded together by a press in the hot grill. I tried unsuccessfully to find comparable sandwiches back in California. Many delis offered sandwiches billed as "panini" but they lacked the authentic flavors and construction of their Italian namesakes.
I received a panini grill as a Christmas gift so that I could try my hand at making panini at home, but was disappointed with the meager cook book that accompanied the grill. I researched specialty cookbooks dedicated to the subject of panini and discovered that "Simple Italian Sandwiches" fit the bill exactly. I was delighted to read in the foreword by Mario Batali that his favorite place to eat in Italy is also the AutoGrill which he called "temples of gastronomic magnificence".
The authors, Jennifer and Jason Denton, also fell in love with the little toasted sandwiches during a trip to Italy and established a tiny Greenwich Village restaurant called `ino that featured the foods they had come to love in Italy. Their recipes offer "maximum flavor and minimal cooking" allowing the cooks to spend more time with their guests.
Before I delved into the panini recipes in "Simple Italian Sandwiches" I purchased warm, soft ciabatta rolls, fresh mozzarella, a wonderfully aromatic wedge of Parmigiano Reggiano, Asiago, Prosciutto di Parma, campari tomatoes on the vine and extra virgin olive oil. You're probably thinking by now that I spent a fortune and traveled far and wide to collect these essential panini ingredients. To the contrary, it required just one trip to the local Costco and cost far less than if I had gone to the expensive Italian deli nearby. As suggested by the authors, I shopped for top quality ingredients and prepared the condimenti myself from scratch. These included fresh basil pesto, balsamic roasted garlic, oven roasted tomatoes and peperonata - diced bell peppers slowly roasted with balsamic vinegar and herbs in olive oil.
The cookbook includes 6 sections:
Basics - the list of suggested top-quality ingredients - breads, meats, cheeses.
Condimenti - including pesto, mayonnaise, roasted garlic, oven-roasted tomatoes, etc.
Panini - 19 recipes
Bruschetta - 15 recipes
Tramezzini - 9 recipes
Antipasti, Merende and Insalate - interesting accompaniments to the sandwiches
I had been expecting a cookbook entirely consisting of panini recipes, but the bruschetta and tramezzini recipes are an enjoyable bonus. I hadn't thought of bruschetta as a type of sandwich, but it's essentially an open face sandwich with delicious fresh ingredients piled on a small slice of crusty, toasted bread. Tramezzini, which means "little something in the middle", are crustless, petite sandwiches made on moist, fresh white bread. The fillings are simple and flavorful, just as with the panini, but the sandwiches are not toasted.
The recipes are very simply presented, one per page, with a nice, crisp typeface and plenty of whitespace to allow you to make your "cook's notes". A column of ingredients and quantities is printed on the left side of the page (reinforcing how few ingredients there are in most of the recipes), with the instructions in step by step form on the right side. Full color photos (46 in total) accompany many of the recipes, helping you to select the recipe that appeals to your appetite and available ingredients and offering attractive serving suggestions.
Panini (and the other Italian sandwiches featured in the book) are an excellent addition to the repertoire of a busy cook, perfect for families on the run and working cooks with little time and energy for cooking after a long day at work. And "Simple Italian Sandwiches" provides a sufficient variety of enticing and practical recipes to ensure that your panini grill earns a permanent spot among the most useful appliances in your kitchen.

Still love it........2007-03-25
I bought this book over ten years ago, after I saw the chocolate sandwich on the cover. Tried it and LOVED it, as did my son. From there I just worked my way through the book and I can't remember being unhappy with anything I made from it. Surprised by the negative reviews posted just under mine but I guess if its not what you're expecting, then you're going to be disappointed.
That said, it's a fabulous sandwich book.
What was the point ???.......2007-03-09
I could of gotten better recipes off the web and for free.
Not what I expected.......2007-02-12
This recipe book was recommended with the panini grill - but it has very few grilled recipes. Not what I expected at all.
Not a good italian panini cook book.......2007-01-10
This book is not quite what I thought it was going to be. If you are interested in more dinner/lunch panini (italian) sandwich type cookbooks look elsewhere.
Hot sandwitches.......2007-01-04
A lot of good recipies to try, not what kids would like

good for the price.......2007-04-10
I was a bit disappointed. "Simple Italian Sandwiches" costs more but has a better selection and more information.
The Best Panini Book I've Found.......2007-01-19
I searched for a good panani cookbook to compliment a Christmas gift of a panini press/maker. While it's a small paperback, it has great recipes and it's all panini recipes. I looked at several books in the brick-and-mortar book stores and most gave panani sandwiches a passing glance and moved on to other recipes. At least McAuley stayed with the title of her book and didn't go astray. You'll also find a good mix of breakfast, lunch and dinner offerings and even some tasty all-veggie recipes. It's the best all-panani book I've found so far and well worth the small price.
The perfect sandwich!.......2006-03-13
Jo McAuley's PANINI surveys the grilled Italian sandwich which is becoming so popular in bistros and delis in North America. You'd think panini sounds too exotic to produce at home, but quite the opposite: McAuley demonstrates it's the perfect sanwich for producing in a home kitchen and packs her cookbook with recipes for vegetarian, meat, and even dessert sandwiches to prove it. Color photos face nearly every page and encourage cooks to sample.

Delicious!.......2006-02-21
A fantastic book to use with your panini press. The recipes are bold and delicious. Say goodbye to boring sandwiches!
Book Description
Nick Stellino revels in his love of good food and infuses each new book with the kind of zest for living that has become the hallmark of his television shows and personal appearances. This all-new collection is no exception, with more than one hundred recipes celebrating the quintessential Italian comfort foods that have such enduring and universal appeal.
Yet this is more than just a sampling of Italian classics. Nick's recipes for pizza, pasta, and panini are imaginative and contemporary interpretations. He enlivens traditional pizzas-baked, fried, or stuffed-with unusual ingredients and makes pasta from scratch as simple as 1-2-3. And in Nick's hands, easy-to-make sandwiches and breads, for which Italy is famous, become works of art.
Nick Stellino's Passione speaks as much to the heart as it does to the taste buds. It draws on the rich culinary history of Nick's native Italy, shares the secrets of Italian home cooks, and features unique touches that could only come from this charismatic personality.
Customer Reviews:
Wow!.......2005-10-16
I own all of Nick Stellino's books but had used this one least b/c of my fear of pasta, pizza, and panini--in other words, the ever-dreaded carbos! But it's fall now, and I was ready to throw my fear of carbo-loading to the wind...first stop, PIZZA. Today was my 'maiden voyage,' (and I had hoped it wouldn't end up like that of the Titanic!). I couldn't believe what smooth sailing it was. Nick gives alternate kneading methods, by hand or mixer--I chose the easy way out! I made enough dough for four 12" pizzas. (I got carried away with myself b/c it took no time or effort at all). Didn't have mozzerella to make pizza, so Nick conveniently had flatbread recipes--and that was where I began. With some fresh rosemary, garlic, a hint of red pepper, a sprinkle of parmesan cheese and olive oil, it was so simple and came out of the oven looking like...well, bread! Like it was supposed to...not a 'wannabe,' but the real thing. I impressed myself, I must say. I'll make it for a dinner I'm planning to give next weekend. Dough is easily refrigerated or frozen to use whenever. Another pleasant surprise--Nick tells you how to make pizza sauce, no need to buy it--using canned, jarred, or homemade as a base, then adding a few extra ingredients, blending in processor, done. That's another item crossed off my pizza grocery list. It was like he was leading me by the hand. I am so glad I had this book in my kitchen library. I'm getting ready to dive into pasta, and I know I'll be using this book again.

For Locals and Visitors, Alike.......2001-07-06
Informative and interesting guide to local geography. Much more than a tourist guide for kids, this points out local attractions plus a bit of history and legend. Attractive captioned illustrations enliven each page and at times add a touch of humour. Some of the vocabulary may be difficult for youngsters, but the format lends itself to reading aloud. Ms Kaupuiki also includes a glossary and pronunciation guide for many of the Hawaiian words, although it seems to be taken for granted that readers will know that Peter and his dog are wearing helmets that ancient Hawaiian warriors wore, though why they wear them, I don`t know (because he is skateboarding?) I grew up in Hawaii, with local history lessons and all, but even I learned a thing or two from Peter Panini. My two boys enjoy hearing about places they know, as well as finding out about the other islands and some basic history and lore. I wonder if other states have as interesting geography books for kids about their region.
Book Description
Panini sandwiches are just as healthy and convenient as their American cousins, but the ingredients revolve around luscious breads topped with healthy Mediterranean staples such as olive oil, garlic, vegetables, fish, low-fat ham, and tasty cheeses. Ingredients are available at any local supermarket, and these tasty combinations can be made in minutes. Try a new panini sandwich every day!
