I really enjoyed this book. Both stories were great but I especially loved the story of Corrigan and Dorie. I really hope Diana Palmer writes the story of the remaining brothers.

4 out of 5 stars Good story as only D. Palmer can tell them.......1998-06-09

It was good reading. It also makes you hope that she will write something in the future relating to the three remaining bachelor brothers.

4 out of 5 stars Typical Diana Palmer.......2005-09-20

This is a book with four short stories in it. The Joan Johnston ones are boring and not worth reading. My advice for the doctor who finds a pregnant woman crying in a closet - leave her there. The two Palmer ones are unrealistic in thier plots, but are fun to read. They are written in typical Diana Palmer style. If you like her style, then these two stories are for you.

3 out of 5 stars :|.......2001-02-17

I have to admit that I was disappointed with this book. The stories were supposed to be short and sweet, but to short in my opinion. I specifically bought this book because I love the Hawk's Way series and wanted to read A Hawk's Way Christmas. This featured Rolleen Whitlaw, one of Zach and Rebecca's adopted children. Also featured is Galvin Talbot who was first introduced to us in Rolleen's sister Jewel's story 'The Virgin Groom.' In this book we learn that Galvin is a widowed father and Rolleen is an unwed pregnant woman afraid to tell her parents the truth. Rolleen and Gavin decide to pretend to be engaged over Christmas. Rolleen figures at least that way Christmas is not spoiled for her family. Gavin also has his reasons for helping Rolleen. The whole story covers about a two week period. I love the Whitelaws and was disappointed that there was not more to this story. I still would not have missed reading this story about another Whitelaw child.

The rest of the stories are short and sweet as well. For a short story they were still good. I loved reading about Stony in 'Taming the Lone Wolf.' The best parts were when he interacted with Rose. I thought that it was hilarious when Rose told Stony that she did not like him and he said thats okay because I don't like you either. Of course, Stony ends up falling in love with her.

If you have no expectations for in-depth stories, if you go into this book expecting short stories than you will probably enjoy reading this book by two great authors.

3 out of 5 stars These Texan Men Come Alive.......2000-02-02

I really enjoyed Stony Carlton in "Taming the Lone Wolf." The electricity flies in this story, although the heroine switches from gutsy to helpless a little too much for me... but give me a man like Stony - yum! I also like Hank, our football pro turned ZZTop band leader - what a contrast! In Diana Palmer's "Redbird," these two thrown together by mistake have a relationship that is sweet fantasy, although I have no idea how she didn't give in (Diana Palmer's two heroines don't consummate their relationships without a wedding ring). But, who would name their daughter, Poppy? I had a tough time with that. Quick reads, all four, enjoyable!

This is a great anthology but what you are not told is these stories are all reprints from the early 90's.

We think of the star of Bethlehem - the star that the wise men followed so patiently and so hopefully and so faithfully - as a phenomenon in the heavens, and so it was. But the star in the heavens was not the only star or the most important star. The wise men had a star within that enabled them to see the star without.

Bestselling author Chieko Okazaki sheds new light on the familiar Christmas story in her insightful new book, Stars. In her warm and distinctive style, she shares stories, scriptures, and personal memories of Christmas to testify of her deep feelings about Jesus Christ, the babe of Bethlehem who was born under a shining star. "Christ waits to be born anew in our hearts," she testifies. "His star is in the heavens. Wise men and women seek him still."

Let a star guide you this Christmas season.

I can't believe this book is out of print! It tell the story of an angel who sacrifices herself to be the Star of Bethlehem. The ending is so touching, so beautiful, that it makes me cry every time I read it. It is a book for children and grown-ups and should be on everyone's shelf to share during the holidays. Why oh why did it go out-of-print?! I hope the publishers reconsider and republish it next holiday season!

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Gift: A Christmas Story.......2002-12-11

This is really a wonderful book not just for children but for adults also. It's the story of an angel named Grace who gives up her heavenly life to come to earth to help Jesus Christ from his birth to his mortal death. If you are really on the fence about organized religion this is the book you need to help you explain to young children about the Savior's mission. It will also help explain selfless love and caring.

The illustrations in the book were great, really help kids and adults stay interested. This book is a Christmas Tradition in our home!

4 out of 5 stars Agatha Christy Christmas stories.......2007-03-29

This is not a bit of Hercule Poirot about a murder or something. This is a little book of Christmas poetry and short stories, from Agatha Christie Mallowan. In the first story, Mary looks upon her babe and an angel says she is allowed to see into the childs future, and seeing that future, is told that God has said she has the right to say if the child will live or die....it is up to her, the conversation gets very interesting.
Martyers are in another story, having suffered horribly they wonder, was it enough? Did they suffer enough for the Christ? The story of the Naughty Donkey, these will all tug at your heart.

5 out of 5 stars The Way to Heaven.......2006-09-18

Agatha Christie published the stories and poems of STAR OVER BETHLEHEM during her very late, in fact penultimate period, one which has been widely derided but one in which in my opinion, she was still capable of pulling off tremendous successes as well as the puzzling flops. Of all the different decades of her writing, the 60s is the one in which I would have liked most to have known her, and even though her development had taken a different direction, she was still very much at the top of her game at certain moments. She had long ago left off writing the Mary Westmacott novels, and the great days of her playwriting career had recently come to a halt with the superlative RULE OF THREE in 1962. And yet some of the mystical, as well as the shrewdly observant, the qualities we read "Mary Westmacott" to enjoy in bulk, still clings to the material of STAR OVER BETHLEHEM, and in fact in some ways it's Christie's most nodernist, fragmented, and yet far-reaching work.

The poems aren't much, and really if these poems are new then she hasn't progressed much since her very first book of poems from back in the 1920s--a remarkable case of intellectual paralysis if you ask me. But the stories seem very much of a piece, and very much contemporary--even to such internal details as the talk about the "ban the Bomb" marchers, or the Japanese sci-fi structure of "In the Cool of the Evening," in which water contaminated by a nuclear power plant accident has mutated the animals and plant life of a small English village into innumerable new monstrous yet beautiful species.

One story, "The water Bus," doesn't do it for me, it's a little too contained and foreshortened. A typically self-satisfied English bourgeoise, like Joan Scudamore in Westmacott's masterpiece ABSENT IN THE SPRING (1944). goes for a cooling ride in a London water bus and finds herself jostled by a variety of loud, shrieking lower class peasants. At first they repel her, then under Christ's influence she comes to accept them as wholly human.

The remaining stories, from the Nativity themes of "The Naughty Donkey" and the title piece, all the way through to the modern pageantry of "Promotion in the Highest," are superbly satisfying, testaments to Christie's magnificent storytelling abilities.

She was to write, as far as I know, only one story after these, the Mr. Quin adventure of "The Harlequin Tea Set." She was like Prospero, tempted to break her own rod, a master storyteller now giving it all up for the pleasures of silence. She is, I think, our very greatest writer, and this book a puzzling sidelight to her genius.

      2 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2005-12-27

There may be good Christmas books out there, but this isn't one of them. I bought it for my grandson to go with the Little People manger set. It doesn't really tell the Christmas story, however. Concentration on the star and not the baby Jesus. The text isn't suitable for a young child either--too many big words.

      5 out of 5 stars Simply Told.......2004-09-05

(original review: Sept. 4, 2004) I looked high and low to find a Christmas book for my nephew's first Christmas. Several of them had fine points. Whether it was the lush illustrations, funny stories about Santa or that they told truly heart warming stories. The problem was that I wanted a children's book that focused on why we celebrate Christmas, without adding "characters" or being told from an animal's point of view. This book does just that. I think younger children will be drawn to the glittery stars and the Kings treasures and it will be a nice read for them as they get older.

(update: January 30, 2006) I would like to clarify that my original review was based on the hardcover edition of this book ISBN: 1-55858-203-7, not the board book. I am not familiar with the board book version and do not know if it contains the same text as the hardcover version, which is intended for children 4 - 8 years of age. The title is "The Christmas Star" but the star is not the focus of this book. The Star of Bethlehem is on most of the pages but that is because it is leading everyone to the Holy Child. This book is not about Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem, instead, the focus is on the pilgrimage that took place because of His birth. Not sure if this book is for you, check your local library for a copy....then buy five copies, as I did!

      5 out of 5 stars The Christmas Star-Pure elegance.......2000-05-23

This book is a fluent read about the birth of Jesus. The pictures add a touch of dreamy take me back in time feel. This is a must have story for the holiday season.

        Book Description

Earth ovens combine the utility of a wood-fired, retained-heat oven with the ease and timeless beauty of earthen construction. Building one will appeal to bakers, builders, and beginners of all kinds, from:
      • the serious or aspiring baker who wants the best low-cost bread oven, to

      • gardeners who want a centerpiece for a beautiful outdoor kitchen, to

      • outdoor chefs, to

      • creative people interested in low-cost materials and simple technology, to

      • teachers who want a multi-faceted, experiential project for students of all ages (the book has been successful with everyone from third-graders to adults).
Build Your Own Earth Oven is fully illustrated with step-by-step directions, including how to tend the fire, and how to make perfect sourdough hearth loaves in the artisan tradition. The average do-it-yourselfer with a few tools and a scrap pile can build an oven for free, or close to it. Otherwise, $30 should cover all your materials—less than the price of a fancy "baking stone." Good building soil is often right in your back yard, under your feet. Build the simplest oven in a day! With a bit more time and imagination, you can make a permanent foundation and a fire-breathing dragon-oven or any other shape you can dream up.
Earth ovens are familiar to many that have seen a southwestern "horno" or a European "bee-hive" oven. The idea (pioneered by Egyptian bakers in the second millennium bc!) is simplicity itself: fill the oven with wood, light a fire, and let it burn down to ashes. The dense, 3- to 12-inch-thick earthen walls hold and store the heat of the fire, the baker sweeps the floor clean, and the hot oven walls radiate steady, intense heat for hours.
Home bakers who can't afford a fancy, steam-injected bread oven will be delighted to find that a simple earth oven can produce loaves to equal the fanciest "artisan" bakery. It also makes delicious roast meats, cakes, pies, pizzas, and other creations. Pizza cooks to perfection in three minutes or less. Vegetables, herbs, and potatoes drizzled with olive oil roast up in minutes for a simple, elegant, and delicious meal. Efficient cooks will find the residual heat useful for slow-baked dishes, and even for drying surplus produce, or incubating homemade yogurt.

4 out of 5 stars wood fired ovens.......2007-10-10

I went to a major bookstore looking for information on wood fired ovens and got nothing......the book I bought at Amazon was just what I needed. Maybe next year we will have a wood fired oven in our back yard. Service was good and promt.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed and Complete.......2007-09-12

If you are looking to build an outdoors oven, you must read this book. Even if your goal is not an earth oven. Besides detailed information about the techniques to build an earth oven, Kiko describes very clearly the process of baking with wood and goes thru all the alternatives. His insight in using different types of materials is very valuable and his opinions are explained thoroughly.

The book is also very well written and engages you from the beginning.

4 out of 5 stars Ready to do it!.......2007-07-16

I found this title on a recommended list for cob building, and since I love to bake bread, an outdoor oven seems like the next logical step to take. This turns out to be an inspiring book, filled with pictures and instructions and enthusiasm. My only complaint is the limited recipe, especially since I am not fond of sourdough. I am now ready to make an oven though, and try my own recipes.

5 out of 5 stars Bread baked out the back door!.......2007-04-07

Kiko's new book presents a more in depth discussion than the previous edition, of clay ovens one could build in their backyard, from their backyard. The use of hand drawn illustrations and photographs leave little mystery as to designing, creating and using these ovens, with a great deal of freewill fanciful inspiration captured and relayed to the reader. From 'engineering' to trouble shooting, a down to earth (literally) guide to getting in touch with our true nature of living simply.

Kiko Denzer's gifts as an artist and teacher shine in this 3rd edition. Building an earthen oven is the perfect project to satisfy many desires and "Build Your Own Earth Oven" speaks to many of those desires eloquently and practically. With Kiko as a guide you can make something that is fun, useful, artful, cheap, practical and beautiful. And then, thanks to Hannah Field's expertise as a baker, you can enjoy delicious and healthy artisan breads, and so much more.

I especially enjoyed the simple explanations of the physics of building with mud and baking in earth. The numerous illustrations beautifully support the clear instructions on building and finishing an oven, and the thorough and practical advice about using the oven well, troubleshooting and baking make this book a very useful tool.

As a natural builder I've found that building an earthen oven is the ideal first project to gain experience, insight and enthusiasm for the beauty and benefits of building with natural materials. If you use the lessons offered in "Build Your Own Earth Oven" you just might realize the innate wisdom you already possess as a human being - engaging your hands, heart and head to create, to engage life, to do something useful. Or, as Kiko has also wisely pointed out, you can "...just make a mud oven so you can bake your own bread."

Beatifully illustrated, well-written and immensely useful, I heartily recommend this book.

I was wondering what could possibly be better than the first book.
Well, this is it! Thanks. The diverse experiences, solutions,
repairs, ideas and generally useful updates make this a much better
book. The first one was a classic, and this outshines it. Melt, ye

I found the book to be not only user (and Earth) friendly, but really inspiring. The author's illustrations and supplimental photographs reinforce the clear directions. I'm really excited about involving my family in this marriage of art, sustainance and practicality.
