5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2007-08-15

This has got to be one of the best books regarding the business side of movie/film production that I've read in a long time. It is very candid, no punches being pulled. It is just straight up! This book really opened my eyes to the distribution side of the business, and I really appreciate the distributors list at the end. If you are serious about getting your movie out there, read this book! Then read it again!

5 out of 5 stars One book indie filmmakers should not miss.......2007-06-07

After years of watching movies and perhaps having friends, family, and acquaintances tell you that you should write a screenplay or make a movie, you've decided that that's what you want to do with some of the months or years ahead. First, don't panic. Lots of people have had this epiphany before. It's a long journey, but the rewards can be rich if you remember that it's step by step, and not javelin leap by javelin leap. It takes time and much effort, and even more patience.

You'll need a few things before you even begin to direct. Obviously, you need a camera, a screenplay, some actors if necessary, and locations where you'll be allowed to shoot. But besides all that, you'll need some books too, some guides to show you how indie filmmaking is, and what you can do to make your experience an enlightening one, perhaps even more exciting than you might have imagined. That's where Phil Hall comes in.

You pick up a copy of his book, Independent Film Distribution, and prepare to read Phil's educated, calm prose that I'm confident will get you through any worries you might have. It might not solve them all, because an indie film production still has lots to be concerned about during it, but you'll look at how Phil sees independent film and not only perhaps see even more names you might have not recognized at first, but see how to market your dream film, see what it takes to shout at the world, "See my movie!"

Phil's greatest quality in his writing is that he's aware of the filmmakers like you who might read this book. To make an indie film is hard work, but to get people to see it is even more difficult, and he makes sure you know. He does not discourage, but rather guides you through what's out there, also covering what film festivals are all about, and the pros and cons of it.

But it's not only him! No, no. You'll be fortunate enough to read interviews with various, esteemed indie filmmakers, and quotes throughout the chapters from countless others who have been entrenched in indie filmmaking and other aspects of filmmaking and film distribution for years and can speak from where you might want to be one day.

This is where you go for all you'd want to learn. And Phil, being the understanding, considerate writer that he is, he includes a list of distributors in the back, for you to see who is in the business of getting indie films out there. Believe me, there are many books you could possibly have on your shelves about indie filmmaking, lots of authors talking up the history and perhaps also the distribution, but Independent Film Distribution needs to be one you keep close at hand and heart. You'll learn more than you ever thought possible, even if you know a whole lot already.

5 out of 5 stars Vital for the Filmmaker.......2007-02-27

Phil's book is a vital source for understanding the current landscape of independent distribution. I wish that I'd read this book two years ago before I'd started on my first feature. He's an excellent writer, but it's not just the writing that shines through - it's the interviews. He gets the salient questions in and avoids the starry eyed fluff that has a tendency to creep into industry interviews. I highly recommend it!

3 out of 5 stars Like overhearing parts of a conversation..........2007-02-24

I didn't know what to expect when starring at the front cover of this book and thumbing through its list of contents, but I hungered for knowledge on this topic and bought it with reservations.

After reading the book, it left me with a sense that I merely overheard parts of a conversation, wishing I caught all of it. Although the interviews were pretty decent and sort of acted like conversations at a festival's kick-off party, it didn't fulfill me the way I needed it to.

I can say there are a few things I did learn, which - I guess - made it worth the read, but I won't keep this book.

I don't know... I think I could have learned more by a few hours of reading articles on the Internet, but that's just me.

I give it a C minus.

5 out of 5 stars Series for adults now rewritten for teens.......2004-12-26

I have always enjoyed the adult series of Left Behind books. The kids books are just as good. The kids interact with the characters from the adult series, experience the same events, etc. However, since the main characters are teens, these books can appeal to younger readers. So far, the stories haven't had the ups and downs that the adult series has had. The adult series has books that are a lot more boring than others. The kids series seems to be good in every book. These are not for really young kids, but would be appropriate for young teens. I enjoy them and I am an adult.

4 out of 5 stars Still Reading.......2001-06-07

I cannot rate this book any higher as I am still in the process of reading it. So far the book is great. Have been reading the youth version to see how closely Mr. Jenkins and Mr. LaHaye have come to match the Left Behind series. So far, pretty good. Also like the way they intertwine the trib force with the youth.

Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye 160 pages

This story follows the adventures of Judd, Vicki, Lionel, and Ryan. The Young Trib. Force is trying to regroup after the global disaster of the bombing in suburban Chicago. The terrible loss of Bruce leaves the group in a state of terror. After leading them so far, his life ended when the bombs blew up the hospital. The group, however, can't take the time to mourn, because Ryan is missing. While the group is looking for him, Ryan befriends the daughter of a rich, important Global Community leader, while they both were kidnapped in the confusion of the bombings. Ryan tries to fight for his life in a clever series of events, and lead his new-found friend, Darrion. The rest of the gang follows some clues left by Ryan and tries to save him. But will they be too late? Will the Global Community get rid of Ryan, or block the search? To find out, read this great, faced-paced, book; which is the ninth in this awesome series.

Meet Drew Gavin, former college football star, now a wisecracking sportswriter who claims his drunken rut as a life. But that life changes at his class reunion when his old college sweetheart, Helen, lures Drew into trouble.

Helen is married to a wheeler-dealer lawyer named Freddie, imminently in danger of having his knee caps broken for gambling debts. Helen pleads for Drew's help. Playing the sucker, Drew goes to a bookie named Three Eyes to plead Freddie's case. Soon after, Freddie is found dead and Drew becomes the prime murder suspect.

"Smooth, swift and sure prose, diverting personal and locker-room intrigues, and easy-to-hate villains make this first title in a new series by the author of the Bubba Mabry series an exciting read."-Library Journal

5 out of 5 stars Characters with Depth.......2000-11-25

Brewer once again shows he knows how to titillate the reader with a wondrous menagerie of characters. His "bad guys" are fantastic. Not only are their personalities unique, but Brewer's ability to describe them so that they jump off the page at you is what sets him apart from so many mystery writers. And his protagonist, Drew Gavin, so much like Bubba Mabry in many ways, is a sympathetic character who somehow gets it right--despite his weaknesses and tendency to barge into all sorts of trouble. I look forward to the next Drew Gavin book. Brewer keeps me coming back for more.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing mystery.......2000-09-19

Albuquerque Gazette sports columnist Drew Gavin hates watching his alma mater University of New Mexico Lobos playing football as they almost always lose even at home. This year's homecoming game, a sure defeat at the hands of nationally ranked BYU, includes a ten-year reunion that is his graduating class. Though not intending to go because he feels like a failure next to his alumni peers, Drew cannot stop himself from entering the class tent where he sees his college girlfriend Helen.

Bookie Three-Eyes plans to make an example of Helen's spouse, Freddie Graham, who owes the bet taker a fortune. Knowing his sports connections, Helen wants Drew to ask Three-Eye for an extension. Drew tries, but Three-Eye refuses to budge. Drew heads to the nearby mountains to talk with Freddie, only to find Freddie's dead. The police suspect the murder, done with a fire poker, is a crime of passion, which leaves Drew as the prime suspect. Rather than wait for further damaging evidence to surface, Drew begins his own inquiries starting with an END RUN with no blockers in front of him and plenty of defenders waiting to tackle him.

The first Gavin amateur sleuth mystery is a powerful modern sports noir that provides a glimpse into the deadly political side of major college sports. The story line is crisp, often outrageous, but always fun. However, the plot belongs to its faded star, a has been jock found seeking to connect his short glory days with his failed present by using self deprecation and interesting "soliloquies." Steve Brewer provides a tale that will send readers seeking his other series (Bubba Mabry) while wanting Gavin sequels.

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-06-21

This was the first Wing Commander book I read and I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed it. It tells the story of mission conducted by a new light carrier, Tarawa, and its pilots and marines as they conduct a suicidal mission on the enemy homeworld. The main body of the story, dealing with the light carrier Tarawa, was exciting, fast-paced and a great ride. A brief prologue wasn't necessary but still set the story up well, and I enjoyed reading it.

Even though some aspects of the story, whether dialogue or relationships, seemed a little cliche, they were written with enough heart and emotion to feel genuine. Main character Jason "Bear" Bondarevsky had enough depth and introspection to avoid becoming a fighter jock sterotype. He often questions the barbarism he sees in war, especially compared to the Marines that bunk aboard Tarawa who do things like collect Kilrathi ears as trophies. The book does a good job of showing that the Marines see the dirtier and more personal impact of war compared to the pilots, without being too heavy handed in its stance on war in general.

This book is great pulp science fiction with some heavy issues discussed in an way appropriate the tone of the story. You'll be cheering on the Tarawa as it tries to survive its mission.

4 out of 5 stars A brilliant collaboration! [NO Spoilers].......2001-12-25

Stasheff sets them up, while Forstchen knock's em down. This book is a one-two punch for any fan of the PC video game, but also simply as a tale of science-fiction. It is broken up into two parts, a short story which acts as a 'prologue' (Milk Run, written by Stasheff) that will just rip your heart out with deep characterization and plot; the title 'novel' portion, written by Forstchen, follows up the result of the short story with continuation of the character Jason 'Bear' Bonderevsky aboard a slapped-together escort carrier _Tarawa_. Where Stasheff rips your heart out, Forstchen stomps on it with character interaction and the tragedy that is war. The last scene in this book always brings me to tears. I highly recommend this novel, and urge you to hit up one of the auctioneers or go to a used book store. This book is sadly out of print!

5 out of 5 stars A scifi novel to make all fans proud.......2001-11-08

I have read all the Wing Commander novels even the horrible ones written for the movie, which in and of itself was a horror, and I believe this is the best book of the series. Yet, I wonder of all the books why this won hasn't been reprinted? None of the other books in the series are as complening and captivating as this book.Without giving to much away, the plot seems to be a combination of the World War Two Dolittle Raid, and the Battle of Midway and like the US Naval the Confed fleet is outnumbered, out gunned, and the Kilrathi like the Japanese are winning the war, but out numbered and stretched to the limit the humans in the ConFederation have to take an all or nothing through of the dice on a plan that has almost no chance of success. Read the Book and Find out if the Confederation hits the heart of the Kilrathi, their homeworld, or we lose? Find the book, the answers will surprise you, the cost will be high, and don't stop reading to the end.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-05-26

I know this probably won't help those who are looking for this book, but all I can say is that it's worth it in the end. It's one of the best Wing Commander novels that I have ever read, and I really hope that you find the book. So don't give up. You'll find it. I did...

5 out of 5 stars Took me a while, but I found it..............1999-10-12

I finally found this book on my own at a local used book store and, needless to say, I was excited. This book was great. Well, the first part, "Milk Run", was a little stale, but the bulk of the story, "End Run", was masterful. There was a lot of great action and interesting characters. I liked how Kevin Tolwyn transformed from a spoiled rich brat into a mature soldier of the Confederation. Though not as good as Fleet Action, End Run was a superb novel set in the Wing Commander Universe and I, for one, am glad I found it.

A common theme in millennial prophecies is the appearance of a bright comet in the heavens. Tom Kay's When the Comet Runs attempts to divine what this celestial event might bring with it. Kay does not claim to be a prophet, but he is adept at interpreting and integrating the prophecies of the Bible, Nostradamus, Edgar Cayce, and contemporary prophets like Gordon-Michael Scallion. Kay weaves this potpourri of prophecy into an illustrated tapestry of the future, revealing a variety of images from earthquakes--like "the big one" due hit California--to an approaching spiritual transformation of the entire human race. --Brian Patterson

Is there more to Russian cookery than beets, cabbage, and sour cream? Please to the Table, a comprehensive guide that takes readers and cooks from the Baltics to Uzbekistan, should absolutely bury that question. Russia alone is bigger than the U.S. and Canada combined; its people claim more than 100 different nationalities and languages. Throw in the other 14 former Soviet republics, cook a feast, and you'll sample everything from Moldavian marinated peppers to cold yogurt and cucumber soup to Uzbek lamb stew to crawfish boiled in beer to open cheese tartlets, Russian tea, and, yes, beef stroganoff--nearly every major culinary style is represented here. Anya von Bremzen and John Welchman capture the soul of Mother Russia in 400 recipes joined together with a literate overview of each culinary piece in this magnificent jigsaw puzzle of a nation. The cook will be amply rewarded, and readers will travel far and wide through flavors and feasts only dimly imagined in the West.

          Book Description

From the robust foods of the Baltic states to the delicately perfumed pilafs of Azerbaijan, from borscht and beef stroganoff to the grains and yogurts of Georgia, Anya von Bremzen and John Welchman take Westerners on a spectacular tour of the many and varied cuisines of the fifteen former Soviet republics.

Anya von Bremzen, a native Muscovite, grew up on regional cooking and has traveled extensively throughout the former Soviet Union, visiting professional chefs, touring markets, and sampling and gathering dishes. Covering eleven time zones and hundreds of recipes, Please to the Table brings to light the astounding culinary diversity of this corner of the world-and the similarities between the cuisines, too.

3 out of 5 stars Poorly organized, poorly edited.......2007-08-18

This is a book that I really really wanted to like, but which has so many irritating quirks of format, editing, and omission that the overall feel is that of a good book ruined by a bad editor.

          STRENGTHS:
          * Unlike all too many books out there, the author(s) went to the commendable effort of discussing the regional differences in cuisine amongst the many countries that used to comprise the USSR, and they provide recipes for each in separate chapters. Major kudos for that. I wish that other all-in-one type books on Chinese, Italian, Indian, and (to a lesser degree) American cuisine were as diligent. Such nuances add clarity and focus to one's comprehension of foreign cuisines.

          GRIPES:

          * First of all, as was pointed out by another like-minded and observant reader over on Amazon, the title is totally wrong. This is a book about SOVIET cooking, because it covers many regions within what (at the time it first came out) was still the USSR (of which Russia is was only one country among many). Just a guess, but I'm sure the authors knew better, but the editor/publisher probably forced the issue. If so, how ironic that 'russian' style management should come into play regarding the title of a cookbook on "Russian" cuisine.

          * FORMAT/LAYOUT: Just like some other notorious books I've criticized (re: alton brown and steve raichlen), the publisher went hog wild in trying to gratuitously stretch the page count to make the book appear far more encyclopedic than it actually is. Through a combination of recipe headings printed in grotesquely oversize fonts, creative use of wasteful margins, a plethora of useless and annoying sidepanels that add little of value, not to mention overly generous line spacing, the publisher managed to stretch this book to 659 pages. In actuality, if they'd used the same layout and font size used by Julia Child, this book would probably be well under 250. Can you say RIP OFF ? Good. A page count of 659 in order to cover 400 recipes, most of them fairly modest in length and complexity, is ridiculous. The New Joy of Cooking, for instance, has almost 4x as many recipes in roughly the same page count. In this book, a recipe that SHOULD be less than 1 page is gratuitously stretched out to 2 or 3. It's annoying, and it makes the book less readable. Pity all the trees that died needlessly, just for the sake of annoying readers and collecting dust.

          * TABLE OF CONTENTS: There doesn't seem to be a conveient list of recipes anywhere in the book - I flipped through it again briefly last night, and there's only the table of contents (which merely overviews each chapter in general terms), and the index (which is arranged by searchable ingredients). A recipe book without a list of recipes. Duh. If their goal was to render an otherwise interesting book as difficult to use as possible, they succeeded.

          * GAPS: Despite the commendable efforts by the authors to cover many of the provinces of the old USSR, there are still some gaps - some small, some gaping. Some of the smaller gaps involve having dedicated too little space to pickled dishes (only 17 pages, and grossly inflated at that), and dressed cold salads (19 pages), both of which are FAR more prominent and commonplace in working-class Soviet cuisine that the book would have you believe. A particularly glaring gap is a total void regarding caviar. Uh, hello ? The caspian sea is THE homeland of all things caviar ... but all that you'll find in this book is 3-4 call outs for cooked or smoked sturgeon meat, and 2 recipes that call for salmon roe. It boggles the mind. Picture if you will a book on American cuisine that omits apple pie, and you'll understand my disbelief. At least the authors remembered to spend a few pages covering staples like borsht and infused vodka. Sheesh.

The authors of this book desperately need to get it re-organized and re-printed under a different publisher, in a leaner, meaner, easier to read and better indexed format. In it's current form, it's gratuitously padded and poorly indexed to the point of near uselessness.

          5 out of 5 stars I LOVE BORSCHT!!! .......2007-07-01

This is THE cookbook for spoiled, Americanized Russians who never paid any attention to what went on in the kitchen because their mothers were such great cooks. Turns out we didn't need to...

5 out of 5 stars No pictures but one of the best cookbooks.......2007-01-09

After visiting Russia, I decided to order this cookbook. I use this cook book on a regular basis. As a frequent traveller, I seem to collect a variety of cookbooks and most of them collect dust. I am constantly using recipes from this book.

4 out of 5 stars Please to the Table.......2007-01-04

I bought this book as a gift for my boyfriend. I have the same book in my home and use it often as my mother was Russian and I remember all the wonderful food she used to make. It has good recipes and since my friend is of Swiss and Russian origin and a good cook he really appreciated it. The most often used recipe by me is during Easter when I bake Kulich (Russian Easter bread) and make the cottage cheese spread called Paskha. Thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars one of the best cookbooks ever!.......2006-07-26

I loved nearly all the recipes I tried from this cookbook. It has all the classics like Borscht, stuffed cabbages, varenekis, beef Stroganoff, plus other dishes I'd never heard of previously. This book also contains a great deal of information about the history of different cultures within the Soviet Union. What I love best about this book is how authentic the recipes taste. I'm half Ukrainian and the aromas that fill my kitchen when I use this cookbook remind me of being back in my Ukrainian grandma's house.
