3 out of 5 stars Return of Marvel's Western Heroes?.......2005-06-23

For anyone thinking they will see the old Marvel Western heroes of yesteryear, think again. These "new" versions of the old standbys are quite different from the originals of the 50',60's and 70's. Kid Colt (my old favorite)has an anger management problem and shoots defenseless enemies. The other characters also have different slants. They are basically new characters with old names. Once you get past that, Ostrander's story can be viewed in a different light. This story is a recycled Magnificent 7 at best. The art on the other hand is outstanding. If only someone would bring back the old characters with a fresher more original story.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding art coupled to a middling story........2004-06-11

Once upon a time, comic books used to follow the same genre trends as other popular media. Marvel Comics, these days a company synonymous with the superheroics of Spider-Man and the X-Men, had its share of WWII comics...and westerns, too. BLAZE OF GLORY is a collaboration between prolific writer John Ostrander and Argentinian artist Leonardo Manco, and collects a handful of Marvel's long-disused western heroes in a miniseries that promises much more than it actually delivers.

It's 1885 and the Old West has begun to pass, replaced by railroads, miners, ranchers and the trappings of civilization. Already the myth building of the frontier is underway in such places as Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. When a small town in Montana, it's population made up predominantly of ex-slaves and Indians, falls under siege by KKK-styled night raiders, it's up to one man with a violent past to find defenders willing to risk everything for a bunch of strangers.

The basic storyline of BLAZE OF GLORY is certainly clichéd. Anyone who's seen THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN or ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST knows exactly where this tale is going and how it got started. Of course the little town in question is of value to a crooked man with a lot of money in his pocket for hired guns. Of course the night raiders want to run off the inhabitants at the bad guy's behest. And, of course, things are going to end with a lot of gunfire and heroic deaths.

It doesn't help matters that there are six major characters and just 88 pages to introduce them all. Four of these six have the word "kid" in their names, too: Rawhide Kid, Two-Gun Kid, Outlaw Kid and Kid Colt. Ostrander clearly has a fondness for Rawhide Kid (he returns in a sequel, APACHE SKIES), and consequently we learn more about Johnny Bart than we do about any of the other gun fighters that form the ostensible core of the miniseries. The stories of these other heroes are conveyed almost by footnote, and with the requisite number of shootings and chases there's little time to do much with any of them before the big climax.

Where Ostrander's story fails on several levels, Manco's artwork succeeds admirably. Manco uses heavy inks and shadow to give his pages amazing texture. This is the best these characters have ever looked; Manco's vision has given even the corniest hero - these characters almost all come from the '50s, remember - a post-Leone appearance that makes them seem all the more plausible as authentic gunslingers.

Manco's art is so good, in fact, that one wishes there was more to Ostrander's overstuffed script. With so much going on, there's no time for Ostrander to do more than pay the briefest amount of attention to any given plot thread. The villain of the piece is uncovered in the space of two pages with no explanation of how it happened. Subplots appear, vanish and reappear without warning. A limited page count, just four-issues originally, generally focuses a story, but BLAZE OF GLORY is all over the map.

Regardless, there's a certain kind of atavistic response readers will have to the story. Decades of westerns where heroes make a desperate last stand have conditioned us to react in certain ways, and BLAZE OF GLORY is no different, thanks largely to Leonardo Manco's outstanding, and evocative, art.

4 out of 5 stars Recommended For Fans of Westerns or Good Comics.......2003-08-26

Many former western heros return to join forces for one last time to defend a small town in this western shoot 'em up.

Although the story is nothing new or innovative, this is still a good comic book. The dialogue is passable in this tale, but the artwork is where the book really shines. Manco's artwork conveys the action scenes and gunfights nicely and his gritty style fits the story well (keep in mind though that his work here is not the painted art style seen in the sequel "Apache Skies").

This book is recommended for fans of old time westerns with many gunfights and comic fans who like an action-oriented story with good artwork.

4 out of 5 stars Shoot 'em Up!!!.......2003-03-02

I have to admit, I'ma sucker for Westerns. These days, not a lot of good movies or books come out about them, other than cliched stuff we got a long time ago. Now I don't remember any of these character of the days gone by, but I do know that this collection is marvellous. I was recommended Apache Skies by a comic bookstore owner during my stay in Toronto, but I couldn't read a sequel without reading the original. Boy, what fun it was to read through this, I might say.

The story, I'm afraid to say, is cliched. But then all Westerns are. This one is different, however in terms of how these characters of the past were brought together by a common goal. To help people in need even when their life was at stake. The cast is eclectic and everyone seems to be called Kid this or this Kid. If kids could actually shoot like that in the old days, good thing we're in the 21st century. Ostrander provides a no hassle, origin free story of the characters and takes them off one by one by the end of this 96 page collection. He does so ith style and with respect to these legends.

Leonardo Manco was born to draw this. His grim style and shadowy outlines make this story come to life in ways, no artist could. He's really good when compared to his early days on Hellstorm. You don't want him to draw spandex. This guy is a method artist and he'll give you reality in its grimmest. With each project, his hand seems to get more and more at ease with making the reader used to his style at a first glance.

Great book with a nice and very sad ending. For a reader who has hardly known these characters, it's very hard to say goodbye in such a short notice. Then again, do people actually die in comics? Better check out the sequel to see where the story was heading when the sun was setting on our heroes at the end.

3 out of 5 stars A good read for anyone who rememebers the old western comics.......2002-10-13

John Ostrander ( Grimjack, The Spectre) says goodbye to the Marvel Western lineup of the sixties and early seventies. In bringing a Spaghetti western sensibility to what were essentially Roy Rogers clones he puts a new spin and fitting ending to these forgotten heroes.

      4 out of 5 stars Well-written, enjoyable book........2007-01-07

There isn't much to really make this book stand out in the general run of Star Trek books, but it's an enjoyable read and well put together. The writing is both competent and enjoyable, with the characters and plot devices well-handled and smooth. Not a book for someone in the mood for deep thought, or even the kind of introspection that the best Star Trek books provide, but an enjoyable action-adventure space opera.

3 out of 5 stars Brinkmanship Without the Brink.......2005-05-17

This was a fun read, and especially a quick one. Simon Hawke's political negotiations are well thought out. Actually, Hawke spends more time writing out these negotiations than he does concentrating on plot. This slows the book down considerably for summer-breeze readers (like myself), but will definitely keep those intrigue-loving bookworms on the edge of their seat.

The story is simple enough and there are several twists, only one of which caught me off guard (and it wasn't at the end). Probably my favorite part was when Riker leads a covert away-mission to the planet, and everyone has to have fake names and history. Hawke's idea of keeping everyone's names similar sounding (to avoid confusion among the away team) is actually a very intelligent thing to do. Riker thusly becomes Stryker, and a sharp Trek-phile will recognize this name from the annals of Roddenberry's early mindset.

Hawke's largest flaw is the title and its connotation. I found no humor in an alien named Blaze helming a ship called Glory. His second largest flaw is that Blaze is one of the coolest characters to pass through the Trek universe, and Hawke hardly utilizes him. Even his major scenes seem like those of Frozone in the film "The Incredibles": huge potential, vastly under-developed.

On the flip-side, Hawke's dialogue is dead-on believable, but not quite on par with Friedman or David. His only other TNG book is "The Romulan Prize," which I hope to read soon.

      4 out of 5 stars Recommended........2004-06-28

Picard & Co. investigate a pirate (named Blaze) using a refitted Constitution class starship (named Glory - get it Blaze of Glory?) to raid federation shipping and wreck havoc within the Federation member K'tralli Empire. But all is not as it seems with the K'Tralli...

A good read. The author does an admirable job depicting political intrigue within the K'tralli Empire and between the K'Tralli and the Romulans. I especially liked the cybrid (think cyborg, vampire, sports model with an illegal pharmacy onboard) character concept.

Too bad about Lieutenant Dorn though...

5 out of 5 stars Just like the NG episode "Gambit Parts I and 2" only better!.......2004-02-24

A great adventure that uses the Gambit plot elements to make what could be a good episode of NG. It starts out with a constitution class vessel with Romulan technology. A pirate has taken over the ship with less than admirable aliens to pilot it. Riker and Geordi lead the away teams to disable his ship and stop his rein of terror...all in all a good novel..today it would be a two or three part saga...

      4 out of 5 stars Good action-thriller.......2004-02-08

This is a Cold War style espionage thriller, with a lot of action. The Enterprise is brought in to, on the surface, capture or destroy a pirate ship. The real situation is far more complex: the new ruler and his cronies are corrupt and power hungry and doing deals with the Romulans. There are two story lines: Picard and the Enterprise investigate the situation, which becomes protecting political figures from attack, while Riker, Geordi and the local Lt. Dorn infiltrate the pirate crew. The descriptions and action scenes are quite good, although the space battles are overly simplified for my taste. Picard's story is an intricate political adventure that was quite intriguing to follow, both in terms of the details of the scheme he unravelled and how he did it. Picard is unusually adventurous in this book. Both his and Riker's stories involved vivid and, for this author, unusually distinctive characters. That can also be a bit of a drawback, because Lt. Dorn is not a very likeable character, and it is very hard to sympathise with her issues. In general, there is a swashbuckling feel to this book, both in Riker's story and also a bit in how Picard behaves. I found it quite entertaining, both in terms of the complexity of the political schemes and style of the general action.

A brand-new, heart-pounding tale featuring Catherine Mann's heroic Special Ops unit

Air Force captain Bobby "Postal" Ruznick wouldn't consider working a job that didn't occasionally scare him to death. But nothing gets under his skin like sexy profiler Dr. Grace Marie Lanier. Not that Dr. Uptight Lanier could tolerate his risk-taking ways when they'd struck sparks off one another on assignment a year ago. Now it looks as though the two of them are stuck with each other once again.

Being paired with Bobby's Special Ops crew sends Grace Marie's calm, collected existence into a tailspin. Not only does she have an assignment of utmost importance to complete . . . but she's got little recourse except to turn for help to the one man who threatens her orderly world the most -- Bobby.

Now with one week to stabilize a situation that could destroy the lives of countless others, Bobby and Grace Marie are about to learn that to save the world, they'll have to risk their hearts.

3 out of 5 stars Over populated but good storyline.......2007-07-23

Dr. Grace Lanier is in the odd position of having to call on an ex-beau to aid in the recovery of her father and a covert agent who has skipped communication with the handlers. Bobby "Postal" Ruznik can't forget the way she broke his heart while traveling on a bus in Bagdad, just before he piloted their bus to safety after a landmine tried to take them out. While never having consummated their relationship, Grace and Bobby are very hot for each other, and being together in the jungle has them both willing. Dr. Matthias Lanier is a genius currently working on weapons in the jungle of Cantou. He has become catnip to the sexy new recruit Felicia, who may be more than she appears. Diagnosed as bi-polar, if Matt forgets to take his meds, the whole project could be in jeopardy. Grace has always maintained a caretaker role for her father; now is no different.

When Grace's team rolls in and recovers her father, she's in shock, as he and Felicia are in a very compromising position. They are forced to take on another duo that happened to walk in on them. Back at the camp, sparks continue to fly between Grace and Bobby, as well as the other couples, while Grace and Bobby share a little of their childhood with each other and Grace discovers there is more to her flyboy than what meets the eye. But danger is still lurking in the jungle...

I didn't realize that this was one in a series of books until I got well into the storyline. Mann uses well written dialogue and lots of chemistry to tell the story of two people who had to grow up really fast and are only now learning to love. She does a great job in telling their histories, and I also liked the bantering between the other "wingmen" in Bobby's unit. With two other romances tossed in, something's gotta give, and unfortunately, readers are shortchanged on further insight into the primary couple.

        3 out of 5 stars good.......2006-07-28

I would have like to have seen grace and bobby's story expanded and less of the other characters.

5 out of 5 stars Blaze of Glory is another keeper.......2006-07-24

Blaze of Glory by Catherine Mann soars with the love and valor of our men and women in uniform.

Profiler Dr. Grace Marie Lanier could not get used to Captain Bobby "Postal" Ruznicks over the top personality so she ended their relationship months ago. Now her genius father nuclear scientist Matthias Lanier is in deep trouble in war torn Candou. Grace Marie turns to Bobby and his special ops team for help.

Captain Bobby Ruznick is still harboring feelings for Gracie. He is shocked to see that she is an integral part of his current mission. Bobby has always felt he wasn't the right man for Gracie but something about her keeps drawing him back into her world.

Even though this mission is full of danger and intrigue it brings Bobby and Gracie closer. They both realize there is more to each other then what appears on the surface.

Catherine Mann really delivers the high voltage war story along with a searing romance. The lives and loves of Bobby's crew will touch your heart. The secondary romance regarding Gracie's dad is tender and moving.

Blaze of Glory is another keeper from Catherine Mann. Looking forward to the next story in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Catherine Mann's Blaze of Glory is a great read!.......2006-07-06

Catherine Mann does it again! She brings all of her flyboy characters to life with warm memories and exciting scenes!

Finally, I found out what makes Bobby "Postal" Ruznick tick and how he got that cool call sign. Not to mention meeting the woman who brings him to his knees. Bobby and Grace Marie chemistry sizzle throughout the pages. Not only does their story rock, so does the second storyline with Matt and Felicia.

Ms. Mann brings to front some of today's issues on mental health and does a great job showing how people struggle, and achieve these hurdles on a daily basis.

Can't wait to see more from her Wingman Warrior series, especially Rodeo's story.

        Thanks for the great read!

5 out of 5 stars Catherine Mann is back with another heart-stopper!.......2006-07-06

If you think "Postal" doesn't sound like the name of a bigger than life hero, you haven't picked up Catherine Mann's latest military romantic thriller BLAZE OF GLORY. Wow, what a page-turner and the characters are as endearing as the action is exciting. Grace and Bobby's relationship spins, dives and shoots to the heavens in a spectacular romance woven amidst a daring mission. Mann peels back the human psyche in poignant layers, exposing emotional challenges in a way that will touch the soul of every reader. With so many interesting secondary characters, I can't wait to see whose book is next. Any hints?

              Book Description

Mich Turner, whose critically acclaimed catering business designed wedding cakes for Madonna, Pierce Brosnan, Paul McCartney, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, has created a step-by-step guide to creating spectacular special occasion cakes that delight the senses and are exceptionally impressive.
There is no better guide to the art of cake decoration than Mich Turner, who outlines her basic philosophy that a special occasion cake should reflect four key variables-the personalities in attendance, the venue, the time of year, and the number of guests. This authoritative primer demonstrates how to design and decorate the perfect cake and guides the reader through the many layers of decision-making necessary to achieve crowd-stopping results. The one common denominator of every one of Mich Turner's designs is that it is guaranteed to add that "wow" factor to any celebration.
Spectacular Cakes is a versatile sourcebook of cake decoration styles and techniques from the traditional to the cutting edge. It also includes cake recipes and a portfolio of incredible designs that can be copied step-by-step or adapted to suit any formal or informal event. Spectacular Cakes will make your next celebration an unforgettable event.

4 out of 5 stars Really spectacular cakes........2007-05-22

Some great ideas for all sorts of celebration cakes. Well laid out, photographs excellent and instructions easy to follow. I will use this book a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Loved This Book.......2007-04-10

I am new to Baking and Cake Decorating. I just started baking from scratch, having usually opted for Duncan Heinz or Pillsberry cake mixes (which are not really suitable for carving). The recipes in this book are easy to follow and are really wonderful. I made the Carrot Cake (with the crystallized Ginger)- Which was moist and wonderful!
There are clear descriptions with photo's that are easy to follow or adapt to your own ideas for decorating cakes. I've already purchased over 20 books on cakes and decorating and along with Colette Peters' books, this is one of my favorites!Cakes to Dream On: A Master Class in Decorating

              5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Cakes.......2006-11-04

This cake baking book was purchased as a gift for my daughter-in-law's birthday. I selected it from her Amazon wish list. How could I miss? The gift was a success. A few weeks later a recipe was chosen and presented at a wedding shower held at our home. The guests loved the cake and demanded the recipe. Therefore, one can assume that SPECTACULAR CAKES deserves an A+ and a 5 on the ratings scale.

4 out of 5 stars Techniques for advanced decorators.......2006-07-10

This book is especially inspiring to those who have been decorating for a while and want to fine-tune their techniques. The majority of the cakes use piping techniques. The biggest plus about this book is that the author has lots of pictures and step by step instructions on how to create the cakes in the book.

              4 out of 5 stars Beautiful cakes.......2006-03-22

It has some beautiful, unique designs which are great for show stoppers. I would not recommend it to beginners, although there are some cakes which look pretty basic (i.e. the children's section). However, the focus is on wedding cakes. Mich Turner has fantastic piping skills and some lovely ideas. This is one for the serious cake decorator and would make a great addition to any collection.
