3 out of 5 stars meaning of flowers - not really.......2006-03-15

It's a cute book, but not as comprehensive as I would've liked.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!.......2002-03-22

...This book states very clearly that it is written about PLANT LORE, and that is just what it is about. Persons not interested in this subject will not like this book, plain and simple. Those who are enlightened, and collect books on harmless myths and superstitions will enjoy it. Those who yearn for the magickal associations of flora, fauna and fae will also love it, of course!

1 out of 5 stars Note to Parents.......2001-03-01

Even though the illustrations are lovely and interesting, parents should consider the contents of this book. If you wish to teach your children that spells and witchcraft can lead to more than just innocent fun...do NOT buy this book!

4 out of 5 stars real cool for kids like me who like magic and simlar stuff.......1998-07-20

i thought this book was really great! me and my friend went through it and saw some really cool spells we wanted to try. like me, i wanted to try the one to remove freckels. or the one to become the same size as a fairy. the only thing i wish it included was if you could accually try the stuff and if anything was poisionsous. over all it was great for kids like me who like magic and stuff like that

Like books, some flowers are merely pretty to look at, while others are pure romance. The Meaning of Flowers presents flowers not only as messengers of our deepest feelings and desires, but as repositories of powerful myths and histories. Lilacs, for example, "express the beautiful sadness of love, the feeling--always available to the lover--of impending farewell.... Potently fragrant, the flower was once thought capable of warding off the Black Death itself." Ann Field's collages strike the perfect mood in this beautifully designed book, ideal for those who love flowers and symbolism.

Book Description

Should you send a rose of crimson or of white to the one you love? What gift of flowers best expresses thanks to a dear friend? From ancient days, long before words complicated what we say to one another, flowers have been our messengers, invested with our most cherished feelings. Illustrated with luscious collages by acclaimed artist Ann Field, this enchanting tribute to the power and symbolism of flowers offers a contemporary introduction to an age-old tradition. The text draws on botanical, historical, and mythological sources worldwide, from ancient Rome to Victorian England, from Asia to the Americas, presenting portraits of almost 50 blossoms favored for all time. In Persia, for instance, the black medulla of the red tulip was said to represent the lover's heart, burnt to a coal by love's passion. To Victorians, lavender signified a broken trust, hollyhocks fertility, and nasturtiums a jest or whimsy. Blending fact, folktale, natural history, and original art, The Meaning of Flowers explores the language and lore of nature's most intimate and beautiful gifts.

4 out of 5 stars A useful starting point for the non-specialist.......2001-06-02

While I must bow to the expertise of the first two reviewers, who seem to have done much more research on the topic of flowers and their meanings than I have, I found the book to be a useful initiation into a subject I previously knew nothing about. I am currently online looking for other books on the subject because I found it so compelling.

I think the book is more likely to serve as a resource for an artist--as a source of inspiration or ideas--than for a researcher. If you enjoy the study of symbols and tradition, and if you are looking for a jumping-off point for further investigation, or for some creative enterprise, this could be your book. If you are a serious researcher, you will--apparently--be badly disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Think of it as an art book, not a reference........2001-03-14

If you are looking for something to lay on a table & look pretty, you may find something worth buying in this book: The cover is very pretty, and the subtitle, "Myth, Language & Lore" gives a suggestion of depth and sensitivity. If, however you have any intention of cracking the cover in search of useful information, go find something else.

Consider the following entry for heliotrope (quoted below in its entirety):

HELIOTROPE [Heliotropium Arborescens]

The sun-loving heliotrope suggested DEVOTION to the Victorians.

These pale mauve flowers have a strong sweet sweet scent of almonds or cherry pie. Thomas Jefferson once referred to heliotrope as "a delicious flower. One of its varieties has been known in Europe since the dawn of the West, though the variations brought from Peru in the eighteenth century stirred public amazement.

(End of entry.)

The entry, by the way, does not include a picture. In this book, which bases its appeal far more on the quality of its visual presentation than its insight into floral culture, almost half of all entries are without pictures.

I cannot even recommend this book as a starting point for further exploration, since the author has not seen fit to document any of her observations or facts: There are no footnotes, no bibliographic entries, and no hints to further reading. In short, I found it to be a substanceless work. I'd give it zero stars if that were an option, although I suppose it deserves credit for interesting pictures, where pictures have been included.

5 out of 5 stars A unique view of flowers, an enjoyable experience.......1998-11-10

This book is not to be bought as a reference book for a complete history of flowers and their names. It is a synergistic combination of pictures and words. It is to be experienced as a greeting card from the flowers to you, a photographic essay about flowers and the way they can touch you. The words and pictures are witty and inventive. See this book not as a reference work, but as a special gift for a flower lover and you will be pleased.

1 out of 5 stars Fourth Grade, Sunday Night.......1998-09-14

I am extremely disappointed in this book. I expected to be enlightened to the symbolic nature of flowers, but instead encountered a book that reminded me of a fourth grader's book report written late on a Sunday night. The symbolism discussed was largely limited to one word per flower with little or no explanation as to why this word found itself attatched to the flower in question. I cannot express strongly enough the lack of depth in this book.

To make matters worse, there were not even pictures to accompany every entry! The sparing use of words, one might imagine, would require brilliant pictures to drag the book into respectability. The pictures that *are* included in the book do nothing to justify the purchase of this book. In short, I am sorry to be out my fifteen bucks :-(

Book Description

Japanese masters have developed the techniques of ikebana over centuries and, while many different styles have evolved, they all share the same fundamental principles. The art embodies aesthetic considerations, knowledge of the natural forms of plants, and a profound understanding of the space around them. This book explains these principles by describing the lessons learned from master arranger Bokuyo Takeda and the underlying Zen symbolism in the art of ikebana. Readers will learn that training in ikebana is a process of achieving spiritual enlightenment and that the craft of arranging flowers is a form of meditation. These lessons provide a perfect escape from the stresses of everyday life and the incomparable satisfaction of creating beauty in the home.

4 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-02-14

Although this book is not at all what I expected (it is what it says it is: "an account of the meaning and symbolism of Ikebana" which I somehow missed before I ordered the book), it is well written and offers excellent information. If you want a greater understanding of the art form, then this is an excellent book. If you're hoping for illustrations to go along with that understanding, then this is not it.

    Book Description

This gift book brings together watercolors and poetry in a celebration of one of the most enduring topics-flower symbolism. Chinese artist Fu Ji Tsang, painting with an unconventional mixture of watercolor, Chinese ink, and calligraphy, unites the traditions of East and West with the influence of such masters as Matisse and Monet. The pages spring to life through the bamboo, lotus flowers, irises, orchids, plum trees, cypress trees, and other plants rendered in an explosion of color. Organized by season, the flowers are accompanied by inspirational poems, personal reflections, historical references, and myths surrounding and explaining their symbolic significances.

        Book Description

Based on five years of close observation of students, writing and collaborative planning—the practice in which student writers take the roles of planner and supporter to help each other develop a more rhetorically sophisticated writing plan—foremost cognitive composition researcher Linda Flower redefines writing in terms of an interactive social and cognitive process and proposes a convincing and compelling theory of the construction of negotiated meaning.

Flower seeks to describe how writers construct meaning. Supported by the emerging body of social and cognitive research in rhetoric, education, and psychology, she portrays meaning making as a literate act and a constructive process. She challenges traditional definitions of literacy, adding to that concept the elements of social literate practices and personal literate acts. In Flower’s view, this social cognitive process is a source of tension and conflict among the multiple forces that shape meaning: the social and cultural context, the demands of discourse, and the writer’s own goals and knowledge.

Flower outlines a generative theory of conflict. With this conflict central to her theory of the construction of negotiated meaning, she examines negotiation as an alternative to the metaphors of reproduction and conversation. It is through negotiation, Flower argues, that social expectations, discourse conventions, and the writer’s personal goals and knowledge become inner voices. The tension among these forces often creates the hidden logic behind student writing. In response to these conflicting voices, writers sometimes rise to the active negotiation of meaning, creating meaning in the interplay of alternatives, opportunities, and constraints.

Beginner, amateur or professional; "Photography-Focus on Profit" by Tom Zimberoff is a must have for all photographers. Tom provides a written road map that is invaluable to not just the individual, but to photographers as a whole. He guides you from the basics of starting out; continues through the do's and dont's on up to maintaining profitability in this tight market.

That's not all. He also includes the "PhotoByte" program. This amazing software keeps track of all assignments from birth to conception. It guides you step by step.

Want to know how much profit you have made from a particular image? It does it! It keeps track of all profits in general and by individual photographs (it even displays the photo). Want to know which customers still owe money, which one's pay on time and how much profit (or loss) from a particular customer? It does that as well.

Don't want customers seeing the markup on your services? Enter the item(s) and Photobyte shows it on the screen and calculates everything for you... automatically. It even add's the sales tax for you! Keeps track of equipment (with serial numbers), customers, jobs...

This program is heaven sent which means Tom is an angel. If you need direction then this book will give it to you. The program is just icing on the cake.

As a former photographer for the military in Hawaii; I moved to Puert Rico to start anew due to the economic slowdown caused by the 9/11 tragedy. I've worked for many people but never on my own (photography). I had the practical photo experience. But the business side was a stretch and I could only go by "general" business practices.

Tom's book showed me that "general" does not apply to photography. "Focus on Profit" is exactly that. "Focused".

Thanks Tom. This is the best Photography business book I have ever read. It stays on my desk at all times.

5 out of 5 stars An Unbeatable Resource.......2003-06-24

I would consider this book required reading for anyone interested in ensuring their photography career is a profitable one! Focus On Profit is a sensible, easy read with a wealth of information about running a successful business.
The computer software "Photobyte" that is included with it has streamlined my business more than I can say.
                I highly recommend this book.
