Book Description
Iditarod musher Jessie Arnold is being stalked and terrorized by an anonymous enemy. First, one of her sled dogs is badly injured in a steel trap and an ominous note leaves no doubt that the trap was set with malicious intent. Threatening phone calls and unsigned messages follow -- pressing Alaska State Trooper Alex Jensen to urge Jessie to go into hiding while he tries to track down the source of the threats. Finally, a near fatal car crash convinces Jessie to let Alex fly her to an isolated island more than two hundred miles away.
There on desolate, windswept Kachemak Bay, Jessie hikes the island trails with her lead dog Tank, marveling at the splendor of her solitude. But in a wilderness filled with hazards and hiding places, she soon discovers she is not alone. With Alex searching for a madman hundreds of miles away, Jessie is on her own...playing a deadly game of hide and seek with a killer.

Good premise, poor delivery.......2007-09-13
DEADFALL was my first exposure to Sue Henry's writings, and probably my last, as well. The plot was well conceived and the location interesting, but the execution left a lot to be desired. The author makes many glaring errors, and the heroine is rather foolishly displayed. Her moronic actions in confrontations with the killer were so frustrating that I kept screaming out loud, "Just shoot him, you idiot! Geez, how stupid are you?". Ms. Henry would do well to hire a ghostwriter to rewrite this piece. Then perhaps a worthwhile mystery would emerge. For a true master of the mystery genre, try Tony Hillerman's Navajo Mysteries. The audio tapes and CDs from Recorded Books are priceless; pass on the Books On Tape offerings.
Deadfall.......2004-07-10
This is an excellent book that is loaded with suspense. I've read most of Sue Henry's Alaska mysteries and loved them all.
Deadfall Falls Dead.......2004-03-15
Once again, the characters are weak; the plot is thin and this mystery has all the flavor of sidewalk chalk. A couple of the dogs surface momentarily but immediately disappear into the blank landscape.
Great Suspense.......2003-02-09
I enjoyed this book for the suspense - it had plenty. Jessie shines in this one. I was puzzled by the convoluted motives of the bad guy.I guess Sue Henry wanted to make the book as mysterious as possible. I felt the frustration that the main characters had, but went along with the story anyway. I felt strongly agitated when the bad guy went after the dogs. I would give a lot to have a friend like Tank.:) The ending was really a reach but all's well that ends well. Altogether it was a competent and enjoyable read. On to the next.
Reading this book was a pleasure, but there were faults.......2002-11-15
I have to say that the quality of writing, the setting, action and details in this book were excellent, and the story well put together. I guess I would give it 3 and a half stars really. I haven't read the other books in the series, and this book is prompting me to find the others to read. Dispite the problems with the book, the richly described setting and conflict pulled me in.
The book does something of a "time jump" in which every other chapter is devoted to charachters in seperate places, and are also seperated by a day. I think this was a clumsy, and somewhat confusing way to let readers in on some facts.
Like other readers, I found the motive too far fetched to involve the people it did. Why didn't the perp just go directly to the problem he had?? I would say more but I don't want to give it away. Jessie took some actions which I keept thinking "No! Don't do that!" at her in the final conflict. Also, Jessie's conflict of independance vs. commitment to Alex, was, I felt, an afterthought to the story which soured an otherwise good ending.
Product Description
Through the life stories of the author s grandfathers, father, uncles, and cousins, Deadfall documents the dramatic changes in the logging industry since the early 1900s. The book focuses on the influence of international timber giant Weyerhaeuser Company in the Pacific Northwest, yet its themes resonate from Alaska to the American Southeast wherever timber is king. While spurning nostalgia for logging s glory days, Deadfall attempts to view a future for today s timber workers.

Captures The Soul Of The Logger & Decline of the Industry.......2002-01-11
They say write about what you know...LeMonds knows the soul of the past and modern logger and writes with as unpretentious style as I've seen in a long time. He uses the language (always loggers...never lumberjacks) and shares with the reader the language and techniques of everything from falling, bucking, setting chokers, to trucking the logs. Furthermore, he does it based upon the real-life experiences of his family. You learn how they used to rig a spar tree and what went through the climbers mind as he accomplished this task 150-200 feet in the air. LeMonds also shares the future of forestry (hand-seeding, herbicides, fertilizer & thinning) to move the life span of high-productive crops like Douglas Firs from hundreds of years to perhaps as little as 35 years as well as what the modern equipment does now and probably into the future.. Perhaps you might find the short chronology of the work history of each of his family members in the logging business too detailed but it's more than worth the wonderful stories and perspectives that go with them. LeMonds acknowledges the scars on the landscape of the past but also the enduring scars on these tremendous men who contributed so much to this Country's development of the 20th century. I don't think one could ask for a more balanced view of this industry and have it written with such class. This is the best book I ever expect to read about this subject, which is so dear to my heart having been raised in a nearly identical community in Southern Oregon. Today I ordered a second copy to send to a dear friend still working in the woods.
Deadfall, an honest account of a changing industry.......2001-08-30
James Lemonds peels away the Bunyonesque macho image that has been falsely hung on the loggers of the Northwest and shown them as they are; broken down, disabled and discarded by the industry that exacted a terrible toll on both the workers and the forests.
Anyone wanting to research the human cost the industry extracted should start with this book. Death and disabilty rates beyond the range of nightmares were considered standard and acceptable, simply because the carnage took place outside the public view.
The hard work, honest efforts and caring that the workers brought to the job were repaid with lack of respect and now, lowering wages, no job security and disdain from the general public.
As bad as it is in Lemonds description, the list at the end of the book does not include all the co-workers of any current or former loggers that I have talked to who have read this book, nor co-workers of mine, who were killed on the job. The toll suffered by the workforce was at least equal to that suffered by the forests.
Lemonds tells the story in an even-handed, personal way through his extended family and community. This is a must-read book by any student of Northwest culture of the past century.
Sacrifices past, present and future.......2001-02-12
Logging in America's Northwest, an industry and occupation which arouses strong passions and polarizing viewpoints.
Jim LeMonds, though not neglecting the emotional and substantive areas of contention, focuses primarily on the human contribution and in some cases sacrifices of the loggers themselves.
This book should be read by anyone with even the vaguest interest in forest management and environmental issues. Although he is from a logging family, I feel that the author has been exceedingly fair in his description of todays industry and what the future holds for this industry and more importantly for logging communities.
To me the efforts and accomplishments of the people featured in this book, and the many thousands like them, are what has made our country great. It is ironic that their contibutions and in some cases sacrifices have not received the recognition that they are rightfully due.
Buy this book, regardless of your political viewpoint on the logging industry, and celebrate the spirit that has enabled all of us to enjoy the many privledges of being Americans.

Horses, England and Murder - a deadly combination.......2007-08-13
This is the second book I've read by this author. It's as good as the first one I read and I will read more. Like the books by Dick Francis, Stacey's books are keepers and definitely re-readable.
The absolute best equestrian author.......2006-04-12
Lyndon Stacey is by far the best contemporary author in the horse-related genre. I rate her even above Dick Francis, as her books show a greater degree of character development. Always well-researched with intriguing plot lines, the tales are highly entertaining. For horsepeople, Stacey is in a different league altogether from most authors when it comes to the accuracy of equestrian-related details. She not only knows the technicalities, she can convey the feel of what it is to live and work closely with horses. Add to that the thrill of well-written mystery plots, and the pages go by much too fast. I truly hope she becomes as prolific as Mr. Francis.

Customer Reviews:
Not his best writing.......2007-09-18
After having read several of Scott's books, I was greatly disappointed with this one. There are so many quotes from too many people that the storyline gets lost in the process. In addition, the pages upon pages of interviews with murderer John Annible are scripted verbatum, instead of being summarized. This made the reading process even more tedious. Scott usually puts out good text. He was way off on this one.
Great Book.......2007-01-09
the book is in detail of what the reader is looking for. This book hits home for many that live on the California Coast and slightly in land. Murders took place in and near my home town. If you are from this area, names of people in the book are very familar to the readers.
I couldn't put the book down it was a great book kept me at the edge of my chair.
My heart aches for Lisa and the other victims families!.......2006-08-10
Humboldt County just snubbed a woman trying to bring justice for the horrible and brutal murder of her beautiful sister whom she loved so much. Her sister was brutally strangled by this mad man John Annibel and they do nothing, not a dang thing to help her in this case. Blood found on hacksaws (still not enough proof for them) and all of the evidence and witnesses Lisa could have rounded up would have been not enough for Humboldt county.
This book broke my heart and made me sick. Sick that this jerk got away with so much. Sick that they gave the raped and strangled victims little if any respect by trying to get this guy and he is running free. Just so sad that to them all of this proof was just a lack of proof.
God bless Lisa for trying her heart out and God bless all of the victims of that sick jerk that got away with so much!
Enthralling.......2006-08-01
As a local Humboldt county girl, I had to read this since I know several of the folks mentioned in the book. My girlfriend's brother was even at the dance that Sherry was last seen at. Everyone I know at work is either currently reading this book or can't wait to borrow it. It is maybe not as well written as an Ann Rule book, but it is still great and the case itself is so amazing that the book is hard to put down!
Humboldt Co law enforcement should be ashamed........2006-07-31
I am the wife of DA Chief investigator Tim Kiely. I read the book because it was about his interview and confession obtained on the Annibel/Sloan case. The Pacheco homicide was his first one as a detective with the Sheriff's office and still bothers him that it has never been solved.
I don't understand how the police depts and DA's office of Humboldt county could be so unwilling to get resolution for these families.
If I was Lisa I wouldn't give up. EVER! There is no excuse with all of the physical evidence, circumstantial evidence and Annibels history of violence and subsequent confession that the DA's office should back away from prosecution. Technology today wasn't the same as it was when this evidence was collected. What is the harm of testing it again. If DNA from Annibel is found on Sherry Lynn or Andrea-they need to open up the investigation and do the jobs are paid to do.
I am frustrated and had a long discussion with Tim after reading it. He feels the same way. I mentioned another missing coast woman to him, I believe her name was Kristy Krebbs, but Tim doesn't think Annibel was involved, however it was arround the same time in Fort Bragg and she has never been found. Kind of makes you wonder.

Customer Reviews:
The title fits the "so-called" quality of the dialogue. almost. .......2006-05-24
If you have ever had the displeasure of picking up a book, wishing to be entertained, only to find yourself gagging and gasping at the amateur level of supposedly professional writing that you begin to ignore the plot, and worry more about the horrific misuse of ink, as well as the pointless waste of so many innocent trees?
To be fair, some of the plot actually held promise. Better yet, some of the descriptions came close to being interesting - for all too short a time, unfortunately.
I found myself wishing (very hard) that the authors finally found a professional, talented and patient secret coauthor or editor to instill some reality, life and creativity into the dialogue. As the pages turned, the wish grew stronger. And stronger and stronger still.
(A DISCLAIMER) I reluctantly admit that my wishes were denied. Now, I read fast, and I read a lot, no less than three books a week. It is exceedingly rare for me to pick up a book and NOT finish it. My spousette claims that it is higher, based on the growing piles of finished books adding (my description, not hers) to each room's landscape and decor.
Alas, this was just such a book. About halfway through, I found myself unwilling and unable to risk any more of my sense of taste, sanity and my general feeling of happiness - all of which would have been at serious risk if I dared read another page of this pointless, inane pap. I suppose someone might enjoy it. My heart goes out to them because of their pitifully low standards.
Plainly put, this is a bad, badly written, and simply offensive book. It is not so much that it wears the authors' religion on its sleeve, its cover page, and its - never mind. It is not so much that the plot is both ocassionally promising and totally disappointing all too often. It is not that the dialogue seems to be penned by an autolobotomized coke addict paid by the word, not by any rational thought. It is all of that and more. Well, less, to be accurate.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BOOK, unless like a hairshirt, you get perverse pleasure from self-abusing your sense of taste.
Great Mystery!.......2004-09-13
Another great "Mac Mystery"! I could not put this book down until I finished it. A great story that kept me guessing "who done it" until the very end. I would highly recommend this book!

Book Description
The doctor's back, and now she's curing dinner woes! Anne Byrn, the award-winning food writer and author of The Cake Mix Doctor and Chocolate from the Cake Mix Doctor does for dinner what she did for dessert-shows how to take common, convenient supermarket ingredients and turn them into meals that taste like they're made from scratch.
Making excellent use of the Crock-Pot and other labor-saving appliances, incorporating hundreds of shortcuts and tips, and cooking from a pantry of prepared foods--whether canned, frozen, jarred, dried, or fresh from the salad bar--the Dinner Doctor shows how to make over 200 fast and kid-friendly appetizers, salads, soups, sides, and main courses. Take, for example, a can of tuna, and think outside the sandwich: Add beans, tomato, and a vinaigrette, and it becomes a Tuscan Tuna and White Bean Salad. Turn that healthy mixture into a pasta salad with the addition of cooked penne. And make a speedy pasta supper by tossing the salad with sauteed zucchini and a generous shower of shredded Parmesan. Or, whip up a Tuna Noodle Casserole like mom used to make-but faster and healthier by lightening the traditional cream of mushroom soup with lemon juice and lowfat milk and using precooked pasta and frozen peas. There are dozens of ways to doctor deli-counter basics into stunning hors d'oeuvres. Five quick casserole toppers. Five zippy garlic breads and 30 ways to dress up frozen peas and frozen spinach. And the 15s--15 cold pasta sauces, 15 ways to doctor deli chicken, 15 meals made from summer tomatoes, and more.
Customer Reviews:
The Dinner Doctor is IN.......2007-09-18
I love to read cookbooks. Usually, that's all I do with them, thumb through them and set them aside, maybe making one or two of the recipes. When I got this cookbook, I took it to my son's football game and read it during timeouts, etc. Not only was it a good read, but the recipes are perfect for a family on the go who needs ideas here and there for something different. I'm also a cook who isn't afraid to try new things, so some of the recipes give me good ideas and I can adjust them to my family's taste.
One of my favorite sections is the appetizers. Our family attends many family social events, and there are several good appetizer recipes that are good to take to parties and get togethers.
I think some reviewers are a little harsh in their judgment of this book. If you want a cookbook that has recipes where the ingredients are all from scratch and are low in sodium, calories, fat, etc. then a book from the Dinner Doctor obviously isn't going to be for you! But, if you want a book that will give you a several easy, quick, friend- & family-friendly ideas for use every now and then, then this is the book for you.
The Dinner Doctor!.......2007-08-27
This lady can make a meal out of a mess!! She has wonderful ideas to throw together a good dinner, usually just by using the stuff around the house. Tastes like gourmet food. Gave me some new ideas for dinner, what every mother needs to spice up the dinner table. Easy, tasty recipes. Worth purchasing.
I REALLY like this cookbook!.......2007-08-06
When we moved into a house with a bigger mortgage and wanted to start eating at home to save money, I started cooking very regularly out of this cookbook. I do not have very much cooking experience and really liked the idea of being able to maximize the availability of boxed, canned, frozen, etc., foods in the grocery stores without losing the ability to serve a variety of foods. This book has definitely not disappointed!
Additionally, we like to eat foods from different ethnicities -- Thai, Indian, Italian, Greek, Mexican -- and the book has been great for that. Yes, you might have to buy a few ingredients you didn't already have, but if you plan well, you can use them again and again to make sure your money is well-spent. And of course you can adjust your purchases to fit your preferences (organic, low-sodium, low-fat).
Really, this book has taken an intimidating idea (really cooking for the first time in my life) and made it doable. We plan our week's meals in advance, buy the ingredients, then just come home after work to 15-30 minutes of cooking time before dinner. So far we have enjoyed the Not So Impossible Moussaka Pie, Thai Spaghetti, Curried Shrimp in a Hurry, the Bleu Cheese Stack and the slow cooker chocolate cake, among others.
Simple and delicious, seriously!
The Dinner Doctor.......2007-04-11
This is an excellent cookbook for full-time working women who need quick, easy recipes for dinners. I have tried several so far and everyone has been delicious and easy! The ingredients in the recipes are not exotic or hard to find and most of them are already in my cupboard. I have recommended this book to several friends who have ordered it and are enjoying it as much as I. My new husband thinks I am a great cook because of this book!
Dinner Doctor has tasty and easy meal ideas........2007-03-04
Anybody can cook using the recipes in this book. She makes it easy to create great meals without having to spend a whole lot of time preparing them. There is such a great variiety of recipes that there really is something for everybody. I have gotten a great deal of use out of this book and I can only hop she will write a second Dinner Doctor book!
Book Description
The first book on doctor dinner meetings in years.
The authors with numerous years of pharmaceutical and healthcare experience examine all aspects of doctor dinner meetings. The book provides an excellent overview of the "How To" of conducting doctor dinner meetings.
There is heavy emphasis on pre-meeting planning and preparation, and the AMA/PhRMA/FDA guidelines for doctor dinner meetings.
The actual conducting of the meeting itself is covered extensively. Issues such as the role of the moderator, using the group, probing and listening skills, handling disruptions, and common meeting problems and participants, are all reviewed. Different types of meeting closing techniques and follow-up procedures and forms are included.
The case study scenario for the book is on how to conduct a dinner meeting for an antihypertensive product. There is a very detailed sample guide for conducting antihypertensive therapy sessions.
"How To Conduct Doctor Dinner Meetings" is an ideal book for today's pharmaceutical sales representatives, especially in light of the new PhRMA guidelines. The book equips sales people with the knowledge and skills required to effectively conduct doctor dinner meetings. It is essentially a meeting planning guide.
Customer Reviews:
Basic, not much beyond common sense........2007-06-29
This serious of books would be helpful only to someone completely new to the healthcare industry. There are no real "insights" in the material for industry professionals.
How to Conduct Doctor Dinner Meetings.......2007-05-19
Would like a recommendation in finding a book that addresses this topic in depth. This book "How to Conduct Doctor Dinner Meetings" did not adequately do so.

50% Of Physicians Get Their Information From Dinner Meetings.......2004-03-12
Physician surveys continue to show that doctors consider dinner meetings to be a major source of information. This makes sense, since office access to physicians is becoming more and more restricted. Dinner meetings are thus another avenue of opportunity in pharmaceutical selling. How To Conduct Doctor Dinner Meetings shows sales people how to plan, organize, coordinate and conduct dinner meetings, which are a powerful communication vehicle. I highly recommend this book to everyone in pharmaceutical sales.
Provides the "know how," for Doctor Dinner Meetings Programs.......2004-01-04
This book teaches you everything you need to know from soup to nuts in organizing a physician speaker program. Every step is covered and supported with planning forms and step by step instructions on organizing a meeting. A great advantage of this book is that it also provides you with post-meeting follow up tools and guidelines. All of our meetings have become far more effective and productive since we started using it, and we are increasing our return on investment for meetings. The book has become a part of our sales representative training program curriculum.
Doctors Prefer Dinner Meetings For Learning.......2003-06-22
All the studies available show that MD's prefer peer forums and meetings over sales rep presentations. I recently read a report that showed that 65% of physicians surveyed preferred MD forums over sales rep visits.
As sales manager for a pharmaceutical company, I made the decision to purchase "How To Conduct Doctor Dinner Meetings," for all of my district managers and sales reps.
This book provides all of the latest AMA/PhRMA/FDA Guidelines, the "How To" of contacting physicians and other healthcare to set up the meetings.
This is a great book and it is standard issue to all of my sales reps.
