Customer Reviews:
I enjoyed reading the book........2006-03-09
I gave this book to my 8 yr old as a B-day gift and although she has not read it yet (She got about 20 other books and it'll take a while to get to all of them.) I have to admit that I did read it and I loved it. I liked Curious George as a child and I was so excited to see that he was making a come back. I could hardly wait to introduce my curious little lady to him. She has enjoyed the other Curious George books and I know she will like this one too. We can't wait till the movie comes out on DVD.
A wonderfully entertaining story - can't wait to see the movie.......2006-02-17
The publisher's description of the level this book is deceiving; it is described as a baby-preschool level book. Perhaps the story would appeal to that level (would have to read short passages to hold their attention), but the literacy level to read this book is around 7-11 years I would say. My son who is 10 and has always adored Curious George, read this book and considered it a little below his grade level of reading. It made the book a quick but enjoyable read for him. The title given as well as the spine of the book even indicates that it is a 'Junior Novel'. There is a small section of colorful photos from the movie but the pages of the book are primarily text with a few black and white sketches. My son thoroughly enjoyed this new 'George' adventure and hopes for more (can't wait to see the movie!). It was a real page turner for him.

Wonderfully captures the movie better than most movie novels.......1997-10-06
"12 Monkeys" is an excellent movie that tells a very fragmented, eclectic science-fiction tale. Part time-travel story, part rogue disease tale, part world-gone-mad, the main concept is this: somewhere in our future, something went wrong. A disease was released that almost destroyed humanity. Because no cure can be found, the only solution seems to be to send people back in time to try and find the moment at which the outbreak hit. If that bit of history can be found, perhaps it can be changed.
As a film, this is not to be missed - Bruce Willis makes a good malleable action-hero, but Brad Pitt steals the show with his half-insane role. But here we're discussing the novel.
Movie adaptations usually seem lackluster and play-by-play to me, but Elizabeth Hand was the perfect choice for this book. Her writing style is sardonically strange, and she seems to capture the spirit of Gilliam's dark vision of the future. For similar material, check out Gilliam's movie "Brazil" or Hand's novel "Winterlong" (recently reprinted in trade paperback form).
Put simply, Hand's voice is exactly what you need to read this tale: she tells it with the same atmosphere that Gilliam tries to convey in the film. Recommended reading, and the movie is definitely recommended viewing.
Unusual enough to be called science fiction!.......1996-05-17
The imagery and spectacle created in your mind by this excellent novel is comparable with that of Robert Hienlin, Author C. Clark and Ray Bradburry. It provides a truly unique picture of a possible future of todays society

More Misogynist Wackiness.......2007-10-02
Still no sign of Goemon but Jigen plays a much larger roll in volume 2 than he did in the first. The formula created in the previous book continues although Lupin is perhaps even cheekier than before. In one story Lupin is in a race to the top of a mountain. When he inexplicably manages to beat two girls to the summit, despite being well behind, he explains his rapid ascend by saying, `I skipped a page'. The next story is even more blatant in breaking the fourth wall with Lupin giving Monkey Punch a tour of his criminal operation as the author/artist omnisciently observes from outside the comic pages.
In another story Lupin shows his softer side allowing himself to be blackmailed into committing crimes in order to protect a woman he's never even met. Of course in the end it turns out that the woman was in on the scam and Lupin disposes of both.
My only complaint in the series is the same one I had with volume one. Sometimes it is very difficult to figure out what is going in. At one point in the book Jigen ends up trying to kill Lupin. Jigen gets the drop on Lupin on the top of a construction beam when all of a sudden what looks like a tiny rocket flies at Jigen's face and then it appears like Lupin flings a tire at the back of Jigen's head. Seriously, it's impossible to discern what's going on. So Lupin grabs Jigen's gun and fires but it appears that the gun has been designed to fire in reverse and fires back into Lupin's face putting a bullet through his head. Next thing you know Inspector Zenegata is complimenting Lupin on his trickiness and the last frame has Jigen hanging from a girder in his underwear. This is an extreme example but I haven't the slightest idea what happened in this sequence.
Despite some occasional sloppiness I found volume 2 to be at least as good as volume 1 and I highly recommend it for fans of Lupin III.
Lupin the 3 is a 10.......2003-12-21
Lupin the 3rd is such a great anime character. This book is grat along wiht the other 7 series. It is hilarious and Lupin is a good comic.
A Forgotten Pleasure.......2003-11-04
Lupin has been around for a while. Today, some might not identify so well with his sexist humor and his immoral ways. But, if you can get past your modern PC world, Lupin is genius. Lupin has no soul. That is what MAKES him the best theif in the world! This manga is well written, the characters beautifully developed, and the cartooning gritty enough for his exploits. Lets face it, Lupin is the James Bond of Japanese anime. If you want crazy action, sharp wit, and other ridiculous foibels, Lupin is for you. Extra points to those who steal this book...Lupin would be proud!
Execrable. Unlike the anime........2003-10-07
The protagonist of this first comic--the one you might remember fondly from the vastly superior anime--gleefully rapes women (who are always sultry spies or vapid bubble-heads, and who always come around to their passionate nature afterwards,) uses toilet humor without ever evoking humour, and acts without valour or wit. The themes which threatened to wear thin in the Anime at times (such as the cliche'd everpresence of the perpetually and uncomically incompetent detective) are tedious before you've even trudged half the way through the amateurish artwork and uninspired writing. If you find yourself unmoved by my words, I urge you to visit a bookstore and read a few of the pages at random. Then, if you find you actually want to endure this tripe, my copy--among others--will be available used from this page. At a dollar, you'll still be paying too much.
Lupin the III.......2003-02-18
Lupin the III is a wonderful book, full of ingenuity and mischief, this book is a must have for your book case. These succesful books are now animes shown on Cartoon Network at midnight on weekdays. These books show us the adventures of a the world's gretest thief, Lupin, and his comrades, Jigen, Goemon, and Fujiko.

Book Description
At last, a cookbook that brings Mexican food within easy reach, companion to the all-new PBS series.
In his previous books, Rick Bayless transformed America's understanding of Mexican cuisine, introducing authentic dishes and cooking methods as he walked readers through Mexican markets and street stalls.
As much as Rick loves the bold flavors of Mexican foods, he understands that preparing many Mexican specialties requires more time than most of us have. Mexican Everyday is written with the time sensitivities of modern life in mind. It is a collection of 90 full-flavored recipeslike Green Chile Chicken Tacos, Shrimp Ceviche Salad, Chipotle Steak with Black Beansthat meet three criteria for "everyday" food: 1) most need less than 30 minutes' involvement; 2) they have the fresh, clean taste of simple, authentic preparations; and 3) they are nutritionally balanced, full-featured mealsno elaborate side dishes required. Companion to a thirteen-part public television series, this book provides dishes you can eat with family and friends, day in and day out. Color throughout.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2007-07-30
I was disappointed when I received this book from Amazon and searched through for something to cook that night. The recipes have too many ingredients (involving an extra trip or more to the grocery store) - and just not realistic for the working people of the world. Mind you, the food was good, but I don't have time in my life for a majority of the recipes in this book.
Wow, just incredable and great tasting recipes!.......2007-07-07
I've learned so much from this book! The recipes aren't only delicious but also healthy and affordable. It feels like a real treat with every new meal and even the regulars! I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn how to cook mexican with everything from the herbs and spices to where to find some of the hard to find items. I read the book from front to back and really got the full lesson you wouldn't normally get just jumping from recipe to recipe like I did for a while. I'll never look at Mexican the same!
Tasty, very tasty.......2007-06-08
This is what I call traditional mexican food, for real, I am mexican by the way, and the flavor of the real mexican food has been captured in these recipes, although I must say that using masa harina in some of the recipes is not such a great idea, I know in some areas of Mexico it is used, but its taste overpowers everything else, so I would not use it, I would use corn starch instead, plain and simple. Besides that detail, the book definitely is worth it, if you like traditional mexican food; some dishes brought me back to my childhood years.
Just Like The Homeland, same taste but less work!!!!.......2007-03-28
A must for your collection of Mexican cooking. You will re-live the mornings at home when the aroma chocked you to death but when you sat and ate it was all worth it!! If you truly love Authentic Mexican food will you understand what i am saying.
To easy to be this flavorful.......2007-03-22
Full of flavor and easy to make dishes...if you cant find ingredients locally check out the riffs for substitutions and alternate preparations. If you don't like this book write your own.

Rick Bayless is Mexican cooking's great American voice. An award-winning chef and author of bestselling Mexican cookbooks like Authentic Mexican, he's found a way to present honest recipes in a friendly, relaxed fashion that nonetheless touches every technical base. One Plate at a Time takes his approach a step further. Bayless offers more than 120 recipes, providing traditional versions of much-loved classics like Green Chile Chicken Tamales, modern renditions of the basic repertoire, and dish "anatomies." These detail what a given dish should taste and look like, when it's best served, and how American cooks should approach its preparation. This goofproof strategy will appeal to old cooking hands and culinary gringos alike.
Ranging from soups and starters to entrees, light meals, desserts, and drinks, the chapters present a wide range of dishes, from the simple (such as guacamole, updated with roasted poblanos, garlic, and tomatoes) to the more complex (a classic red mole with turkey, for one, followed by Roasted Cornish Game Hens with Apricot-Pine Nut Mole). Other winning recipes include Seafood in Mojo de Ajo (with toasted, slow-cooked garlic), Smoky Chipotle Beans with Wilted Spinach and Masa "Gnocchi," and, for dessert, a definitive vanilla flan with instructions for preparing it in three versions: light, creamy, and rich. Throughout, recipes are followed by paragraph-long "postmortems" (is Mexican vanilla worth searching out, for instance) that further extend reader understanding. With 32 pages of color photos and an extensive glossary, the book is an inspired place to start or continue a Mexican cooking journey. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
Rick Bayless has been acclaimed widely as America's foremost proponent of Mexico's thrillingly diverse cuisine. In this companion book to his 26-part Public Television series, he takes us, with boyish enthusiasm, through Mexican markets, street stalls and home kitchens to bring us the great dishes of Mexico, one "plate" at a time. And each "plate" Rick presents here is a Mexican classic. Take guacamole, for instance. After teaching us the essentials for a perfect, classic guacamole, Rick shows how to spin contemporary interpretations, like his Roasted Poblano Guacamole with garlic and parsley. Rick's cuisine is always lively, but rooted in strong traditions.
Always the teacher, Rick begins each "plate" with some never-before-found features: traditional benchmarks (Rick's idea of the best guacamole), when to think of the recipes (weeknight dinners or casual party food), and advice for American cooks (Rick's insight into the ingredients that make the dish). He rounds out each "plate" with suggestions for working ahead.
To complete the journey into the Mexican mindset, Rick, with help from his testers, ends each "plate" with a question-and-answer section detailing just about everything a home cook might want to know: What are the best cuts of beef for grilled tacos? The best cheeses for quesadillas? Is one grill better than another? Rick draws from his years of living in Mexico, pulling us into the Mexican kitchen, to teach us how to create authentic Mexican dishes in our American kitchens.
Rick is an Indiana Jones of the stove, a Julia Child of Mexican cuisine in black jeans and a T-shirt. Rick's goal: to enable folks all across the United States to create dishes that weave in the rich tapestry of Mexican flavor with ingredients that are widely available. He always provides ingredients that make the dish authentic, but he also delivers with the right substitute if an ingredient is hard to find.
Experience food you can't wait to make in a new and user-friendly cookbook that contains the full range of dishes -- Starters, Snacks and Light Meals; Soups, Stews and Sides; Entrées; Desserts and Drinks. Rick serves up such classic Mexican plates as Tomatillo-Braised Pork Loin, Quick-Fried Shrimp with Sweet Toasty Garlic, Chiles Rellenos, Cheesy Enchiladas Suizas, and Mexican Vanilla-Scented Flan.
And for an exciting taste of the unexpected, try Rick's contemporary interpretations of the classics -- Crispy Potato Sopes with Goat Cheese and Fresh Herbs, Grilled Salmon with Lemon-and-Thyme-Scented Salsa Veracruzana, Broiled Flank Steak with Tomato-Poblano Salsa and Rustic Cajeta Apple Tarts with Berry "Salsa."
Food and friends, food and family. Good cooking, for Rick, is the unspoken animator of friends and family as they gather to share a meal. Rick's recipes lend themselves to weeknight family meals or celebrations. Take part in a tamalada, the tamal-making party before the party, or the ritual of a barbacoa, an earthy experience that Rick has made possible with a kettle grill in the backyard.
24 color photographs of finished dishes Photographs of Mexican location shots throughout

Great Recipes, Full Instructions etc........2007-09-26
Bayless knows his Mexican food. I bought this book for delivery to my daughter's in the States prior to a visit. Lots of local Mexican supermarkets. I thoroughly enjoyed cooking every one of recipes I tried and the assembled company were very appreciative on being served authentic Mexican cuisine. And this is Mexican cuisine NOT simply Mexican cooking. The problem in the the UK (at least outside of London perhaps)is sourcing the ingredients. If you can find a source, this book and a little application will provide appreciative guests and hours of fun experimenting with a much neglected source of culinary excellence.
Beautiful Book.......2007-09-14
This is a wonderful book for those wanting to learn about true authentic Mexican gastronomy. Its just so well done. My only reason for not giving this 5 stars was the fact that some recipes did not come out as well as I hoped even though they were still good. I had to tweak them for heightened flavor. For research this is great, but for the actual recipes you might want to try Diana Kennedy's versions or Mexico, The Beautiful Cookbook or do your own thing.
Finally..authentic Mexican at home.......2007-07-17
Growing up in Los Angeles, as well as being a well-traveled student of Mexican culture, I was lucky to been exposed to fairly authentic Mexican food for most of my life. I never attempted to cook it myself because it was so readily available down the street or around the corner. Then we moved to Las Vegas...
...the town where Taco Bell, yes TACO BELL, was voted by the readership in the local papers as "Best Mexican Food". Yikes.
Lucky for me, I just found Rick Bayless' Mexico One Plate At A Time at a local used bookstore (for less than half price for a mint copy). Tonight I made a three-course dinner - Shrimp Ceviche, Arroz Rojo, and Creamy Enchiladas with Chicken, Tomatoes, and Green Chile - all of which were fairly simple (albeit time consuming), and restaurant quality!
Bravo.
Very authentic and informative.......2007-06-09
My parents are both from Mexico and I lived there as a child, so I always look for authenticity in my food. I've loved this book. All the recipes I've made turned out great and very true to what I would expect.
Mexican Flavor Lovers Stop Here.......2007-03-30
There is a great deal of information in this cookbook, both concerning cooking and concerning Mexico in general. It is both interesting and informative. The recipes are varied (both traditional and contemporary), easy to follow, and delicious. I personally find it difficult to obtain a great many of the ingredients he calls for, but then I live in a very rural area far north of Mexico. All in all, if you have an adventurous palette and enjoy Mexican flavors, you will enjoy this cookbook.
