Book Description

This study investigates the major theories of the origins of life in the light of modern research with the aim of distinguishing between the necessary and the optional and between deterministic and random influences in the emergence of what we call ‘life.’ Life is treated as a cosmic phenomenon whose emergence and driving force should be viewed independently from its Earth-bound natural history. The author synthesizes all the fundamental life-related developments in a comprehensive scenario, and makes the argument that understanding life in its broadest context requires a material-independent perspective that identifies its essential fingerprints.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting book about a fundamental question.......2004-11-08

How did life originate? Well, it's a wide open question. As Popa tells us, an explanation that is missing a critical step won't do. There are plenty of clues. But Popa shows us that there are still many approaches to putting the clues together.

There are plenty of approaches that are being pursued today. Popa tells us about many of them. Still, let's remind ourselves of some of them. One is to look for fossil evidence and DNA evidence of our earliest ancestors. Say that these turn out to be hyperthermophiles. Use that information, as well as the stability properties of RNA and DNA, to deduce the environment life originated in. A second idea is to look at the way we synthesize RNA (or DNA) today. Use that information to speculate about how the first RNA and DNA evolved. A third idea is to look at the self-assembly properties of entities for clues. A fourth idea is to note the similarity of ATP and the nucleic acid adenine. Assume this is no coincidence! A fifth idea is to do all sorts of experiments with collections of monomers and see if they arrange themselves into replicating strings. A sixth idea is to concentrate on computer simulations of all this. Computer simulations of the origin of replication show that there are some dangers, such as the "selfish RNA catastrophe," the "short-circuit catastrophe," the "population collapse catastrophe," and simply the risk of too many replication errors. Draw conclusions from the fact that these hazards were successfully avoided. A seventh idea is to at least answer the question of what came first, replication, metabolism, or cellularization. And so on. It seems that there is a great deal we aren't at all sure of.

Popa starts with the issue of the issue of the development of cellularization, metabolism, and replication. He asserts that since all are needed for life, they must have evolved together, not serially. He states that the ATP coincidence probably is unimportant, with ATP's use as an energy carrier being a late development. And he takes on the mathematical modelers by stating that they generally omit first order effects by not tracing the energy flow and the degradation of the evolving entities.

The issues Popa dwells on most are the energy sources, bioinformation, chirality, and the origin of specificity (as opposed to "metabolism" or "homeostasis"). Of these, the part on chirality was the most interesting to me. Popa discusses the implication that life's chirality implies the existence of some large-scale chiral driver, such as rotating vortices or asymmetries in right and left circularly polarized light.

There's also quite a bit of useful material about the definition of life. Popa is right to make the point that "life" and "living entities" are not at all synonymous.

Anyway, it is an interesting book about a tough problem: I'm glad I can just read about it and don't have to solve it!

Book Description

In Let There Be Light, Howard Smith, a research astrophysicist and traditionally observant Jew, explores how modern scientific understandings of the cosmos complement Judaism’s ancient mystical theology, the Kabbalah. He argues that science and religion are not only compatible, but that a healthy, productive dialogue between the two sheds light on ethics, free will, and the nature of life, while at the same time rejecting fundamentalist misinterpretation and the pseudoscience of creationism. Written for a general audience, yet supported by the most current and accurate scientific research, the book discusses topics such as modern quantum mechanics and mystical notions of awareness; how Kabbalah’s ten sefirot mirror the developing phases of an inflationary universe; and the surprising parallels that exist between the Big Bang theory and Kabbalah’s origin theory. Smith delves into complex ideas without resorting to jargon or mathematical equations, creating an intelligent, authoritative work accessible to all readers.

5 out of 5 stars God and the Big Bang.......2006-10-26

"Let There Be Light" provides a sophisticated and lucid account of the physics that underlies scientists' current understanding of the origins of the universe. Indeed, Smith's discussion of cosmology is the best I have ever encountered in the popular science literature. For this reason alone, the book merits a place at the top any thoughtful individual's reading list. However, this book is much more than a soon-to-be-acclaimed popular science classic. For beyond the physics and cosmology, Smith introduces topics from Kabbalah/religion and, with the skill of a poet, weaves together concepts from these oft-opposing disciplines (i.e., science and religion). From the complex tapestry that emerges from these efforts, Smith demonstrates how the perspectives and analyses of each of these disciplines can in fact complement, illuminate, and shed light upon the other. The result is nothing less than an intellectually and spiritually uplifting experience. It will leave you trembling.

The publication over a decade ago of Stephen Hawking's runaway bestseller A Brief History of Time triggered a flood of more or less comprehensible books about the frontiers of physics and mathematics. And to judge by most of their authors, we are on the brink of finding the theory of everything, or the key to the cosmos, or some other Holy Grail of science.

Rarer are authors such as John Barrow, professor of physics at Sussex University, a genuine expert in these fields who writes coolly and clearly about the current state of play. Between Inner Space and Outer Space is a collection of Barrow's writings about the frontiers of science dating back to 1980, and is remarkable for the number of fresh twists and insights it brings to many now-familiar debates. For example, are scientists really close to a theory of everything, uniting all the fundamental forces in the universe and all the particles on which they act? Barrow shows how the quest may be stymied by fundamental limits to knowledge that have emerged from 20th-century mathematics. Are scientists really close to understanding the birth of the universe? Again, Barrow shows that a whole set of limitations--not the least of which is the fact that light travels at a finite speed--forever stops us from knowing for sure if our ideas are right. As in any collection, there is a modicum of repetition and a few ill-judged selections. Even so, any reader seeking thoughtful, sophisticated, and above all original writing about the cutting edge of physics and mathematics need look no further. --Robert Matthews, Amazon.co.uk

Book Description

In this superb collection of essays, acclaimed cosmologist and writer John D. Barrow explores the issues that perplex and amaze us as we cast our gaze around the Universe. Starting with a consideration of the (to some) astonishing popularity of Big Science, and physics and cosmology in particular, Professor Barrow moves on to the key questions concerning the Laws of Nature and the Universe and the vexed issue of life occurring in other planets, as well as the key issues of time and space, and quantum reality. He looks at the ancient foundations of science, mathematics, and their most modern expression - complexity theory. Finally, he considers how science relates to religion and to aesthetics. Each chapter consists of carefully selected essays, many never previously published, and all written in Professor Barrow's clear and engaging style. Each chapter is introduced by a short piece, setting the essays in the context of current focus in the area. Taken together, they form a rich introduction to contemporary debate in science.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Marked by Originality of Ideas.......2000-10-28

This book is a collection of John Barrow's 42 essays mostly published between 1980 and 1998, but none of the topics treated has become out-of-date. Each piece of essay makes a chapter, and all the chapters are grouped into 10 parts. A short introduction in each part clearly sets the theme common to all the chapters of that part as well as the specific subjects of the chapters.

The title of every chapter is quite attractive to those interested in the fundamental problems of physics and cosmology and in their relations to, or a physicist's view of, other disciplines of mathematics, aesthetics and religion. Barrow's writings are sometimes not easy to follow, but are marked by originality of ideas.

For example: In the chapter "Why is the Universe mathematical?" the author first mentions that the sorts of answers depend upon what we think mathematics. Then he puts a puzzle, which is more fundamental in the laws of Nature, symmetry or computation. In the final paragraphs, Barrow states that the science is the search for algorithmic compressions of the world of experience, and comes to the conclusion that mathematics is useful in the description of the physical world because the world is algorithmically compressible. I have difficulty in finding how the earlier paragraphs are related to the last ones. However, the conclusion seems to be simple and persuasive, and would be paraphrased as follows: Mathematics is useful in the description of Nature because she has the characters of orderly complexity.

Only if you haven't read other books by Barrow and want to know his ideas, this would be a good buy.

2 out of 5 stars rehash of his earlier fine books.......1999-05-26

I'm a fan of Barrow's, but this book is repetitive, repetitive, repetitive. It's a collection of pieces he did for various publications and everything in it is said more clearly in Impossibility or Pi in the Sky or others of his stimulating books. Save your money and buy one of those rather than this deflationary rehash.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book as a teenager.......2004-01-17

Back when I was a teenager, (in the early 1980's), I loved this book. It was my favorite sci-fi novel. Really good stuff. parallel universes, and a girl with violet eyes...

    5 out of 5 stars ALAN E NOURSE'S BEST BOOK!!!.......2002-07-19

For several years in Jr High and High School, I was a SF junkie. I just couldn't get enough. And Nourse was my favorite SF author (with the exception of the Foundation Trilogy).

The Universe Between had some almost bizarre ideas about transporting between two universes. But the very strangeness was part of the fun. If we ever actually do get to travel to another universe, the method used may end up being just as strange as the method presented herein.

One of the things that I appreciated most about Nourse was that he was able to tell a story and keep your interest without pandering to sexual innuendos like some other popular SF writers sometimes do. I would be completely comfortable letting any of my young children read Nourse's science fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Unique ideas; Great blend of adventure, science, philosophy.......2002-01-26

Like several reviewers, I discovered this book around age 12 in a Junior high school library. It was my favorite novel for about 10 years, and remains in my top 5, even 30 years later.
The author, Alan E. Nourse was a physician, who wrote SF novels and short stories as a hobby. Given that, the combinaton of qualities that shine forth from this novel are very impressive, in my opinion.
First, Nourse uses some unique ideas, based on speculation about scientific questions of the day (the short stories which this novel sprang from were first published in 1951, in short stories called "The Universe Between" and "High Threshold", per my searching on the internet).
An example: Using the highly adapatable "blank slate" of a young child's brain to imprint/adapt/learn an environment which is incomprehensible and even dangerous to a "rigid" adult mind - utilizing the normally unused parts of the human brain. (I hate to give others, because they would be plot "spoilers" to some extent - but most of these utilize hard science concepts and are explained in a way that entertains and teaches too).
As I've reread and rethought this book as an adult, it also occurs to me that Nourse is most likely writing on multiple levels and sending multiple messages. Such as:

    1. An exciting adventure appealing to the young, young at heart, and both the hard and the fantasy SF lover.
    2. A commentary on the difficulty of meaningful communication between people of radically different cultures/backgrounds.
    3. A commentary on the surprising number and nature of the wonderful discoveries about our universe the pursuit of science brings us.
    4. A reflection/reminder of the precious nature of life, and how close/uncertain death can be at any moment - a reminder not to take anything for granted.
    5. Commentary on how important it is not to squander our natural resources, and the critical need to plan ahead for humanities' resource needs - given the inevitiblity of population and technological expansion throughout the globe over time.
    6. And finally, repeatedly, a reminder of how little we know, and how little our limited perception allows us to grasp the true nature of reality.

This novel should leave you thougtful; hopeful, yet challenged. An exciting, interesting and unique children's SF novel? Yes! But also quite a bit more - very commendably written by this "hobbyist" for the thinking adult SF fan, in this reader's opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Solid science fiction.......2001-07-20

Dr Alan Nourse didn't write much sf -- though he had a prolific career writing non-fiction, esp. with a medical bent -- but what he did was solidly plotted and exciting. Most of his fiction is out of print now, sadly, but it stands up well with the contemporary works by Del Rey, Bova, Norton and Asimov.

This is a collection of ten short stories.

5 out of 5 stars A star course that set me on the path to sci-fi.......2001-01-05

This book whetted my appetite for science fiction at a very young age and I still remember its wonders 35 years later. I kept checking it out of the local library so it would stay in circulation and I would always have it available. Time got ahead of me and we moved away. When I returned, I headed for the library to follow my same pattern and found it was no longer in the system. It was a science fiction book, with a poet's soul, for young readers and older ones who have yet to loose the excitement of what fantasies await in the future.

    Book Description

Between Copernicus and Galileo is the story of Christoph Clavius, the Jesuit astronomer and teacher whose work helped set the standards by which Galileo's famous claims appeared so radical, and whose teachings guided the intellectual and scientific agenda of the Church in the central years of the Scientific Revolution.

Though relatively unknown today, Clavius was enormously influential throughout Europe in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries through his astronomy books—the standard texts used in many colleges and universities, and the tools with which Descartes, Gassendi, and Mersenne, among many others, learned their astronomy. James Lattis uses Clavius's own publications as well as archival materials to trace the central role Clavius played in integrating traditional Ptolemaic astronomy and Aristotelian natural philosophy into an orthodox cosmology. Although Clavius strongly resisted the new cosmologies of Copernicus and Tycho, Galileo's invention of the telescope ultimately eroded the Ptolemaic world view.
By tracing Clavius's views from medieval cosmology the seventeenth century, Lattis illuminates the conceptual shift from Ptolemaic to Copernican astronomy and the social, intellectual, and theological impact of the Scientific Revolution.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The beginning of the scientific revolution.......1998-03-11

Lattis' biography of Christoph Clavius tells the story of a man once well-known and influential in science, although virtually unknown today. It tells about the birth of modern mathematics and astronomy. And it tells about how medieval and modern attitutes collided in around the time of the birth of the scientific revolution.

The book appears well-researched, it has numerous footnotes, and I felt that it gave a good description of an interesting period, an attitude and an environment. I recommend it for those who what to know more about the period of the birth of modern science, and in particular to those who want to know more about the views of those that opposed Copericus, Kepler and Galileo.

      Book Description

The relationship between the human soul and the stars has been central to the spiritual and esoteric traditions of Western thought, and many other cultures, for thousands of years. Medieval Christians thought that heaven was located above the Earth and beyond the stars. Our modern society, however, has largely severed the relationship between the human spirit and the sky. This book explores ideas, beliefs, and practices which meet at the boundary of psychology and cosmology, the universe, and human imagination. This book addresses this special relationship from a variety of challenging and inspiring approaches.

I borrowed the book from the library. This was the only cookbook that I borrowed from the library that I use practically everyday. After renewing the book three times, I think it was time to purchase it. The instructions are easy to follow, the ingredients simple, and I've only had something come out bad once due to a missed ingredient on my part. This book is really great for a beginner to intermediate - where fanciful is not necessary.

It works well in that role. I have noticed a number of recipes that would've had sun dried tomatoes as a unique flavor in previous recipes now have roasted red peppers.

The ability of the cookbook to stay open on it's own is a real bonus.

While it won't tell you how to boil an egg, Lukins and Rosso's The New Basics has proved itself a modern classic, fit to reside on your shelves next to The Joy of Cooking and The Fannie Farmer Cookbook. Aspiring chefs can use this 850-page tome to plan their next cocktail party (try the Raspberry Dip with Crudites), make brunch for the in-laws (how about Smoked Salmon and Leek Frittata and a Chicory and Bacon Salad?), or even bake up a batch of Pinwheel Cookies for the office. The "basics" include tips for entertaining, a glossary of cooking and wine terms, suggestions for a well- stocked pantry, and instructions on how to pick the best seasonal ingredients. Menus and delightful culinary quotes are sprinkled throughout the book, and the chatty tone will inspire confidence in every kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars It's still THE Basic Cookbook.......2007-08-26

I've had this since it was first published and it immediately became MY basic cookbook. After all these years it still is. It is what I pull from the shelf to look up just about anything about cooking. What makes this really 5 stars for me is the engaging style of the authors, their friendly and charming style actually make the book entertaining. I have enjoyed every recipe I've tried.......and I'm still trying new ones.

5 out of 5 stars Best cookbook for people who love to cook........2007-07-24

I've had this cookbook for so long and used it so much that it's falling apart. The meatloaf recipe is the best meatloaf I've ever made. Not only do I love the recipes in this book, but the very first Silver Palate cookbook actually taught me to love cooking by making it fun and beautiful. I can't believe it's been 25 years. I was still in college when I first received that book. Cheers to Sheila and Julee!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook.......2007-06-17

I recently bought the hardcover to replace my paperback that had fallen apart after 20 years of heavy use. My favorite recipes are Rattlesnake Ribs, Baked Beans and the northwest Salmon. Enjoy...this is basics gone semi-gourmet.

4 out of 5 stars Good BASIC cookbook.......2007-05-22

This book is a good cookbook to own, since even the best cooks can benefit from a general "BASIC" cookbook.

I love to cook and qualify myself as a "pretty good cook" with quite a bit of experience. And yet, I refer to this book often... For example, when referring to a special tool, or a special food item, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2007-01-12

I already own this cookbook and recently purchased one to give as a gift. It is a great cookbook for beginners. It has all the basics; from the various ways to cook an egg to cooking fresh vegetables, It even has complete meals that are easy. Definitely a great book for beginners and a great reference for experienced cooks.

5 out of 5 stars one you'll take down from the shelf.......2002-06-30

Sunset's "Easy Basics Cookbook" is one that you'll reach for often when mealtimes roll around or when you are looking for a good party dish. It's a great starter book for beginning cooks, with interesting recipes that experienced cooks will enjoy also. The pasta recipes are especially good. The mac and cheese recipe, an excellent comfort food, is the easiest, most delicious one I have found in years. Unlike some of the recipes which appear in the monthly magazine, these offerings are not labor- and time-intensive; yet they are satisfying to make and to eat. Also you will not be asking your grocer about exotic products as the recipes here draw on pantry staples instead of hard-to-locate ingredients. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great beginning cookbook.......1999-12-14

This is one of my favorite cookbooks. It's the perfect gift for someone just starting to cook. The recipes are good and a little more upscale from Better Homes & Gardens for instance, but not so upscale as to be overwhelming. As a more experience cook, I still find it a useful reference.

This is a first rate basic cookbook and a staple in any kitchen.
It has your recipes for all occasions and is great for beginners and experienced cooks alike. I had my Mom send it to me in the USA since I was missing some of the traditional Canadian cuisine I took for granted before leaving Canada.
It has my beloved Nanamio Bar recipe, Tourtiere (meat pie),Lemon Squares and other recipes from my childhood.

It is well written with many handy charts and sidebars explaining certain food history or tips for a recipe.

It is a modern cookbook updated for the way people cook today.
I plan to buy two more for my daughters to have for their cookbook library.
