Outstanding take on a familiar scenario.......2007-01-24
An affair with the police chief's wife leads to murder, and to an innocent man being blamed.
Paul Kessler is hardly the first protagonist to be involved in a messy affair, or to be framed for a crime he didn't commit. What separates this book from so many similar titles, however, is the way in which he works his way towards proving his innocence. Instead of having to turn into a superhero to outsmart his ingenious enemies, Kessler simply turns the tables on realistically drawn, average cops-gone-bad. Through simple, clear thoughts and actions, Kessler is able to turn the tables in his favor.
The writing is sharp, with little in the way of unnecessary detail. Kessler is an interesting character, and the bad cops are fleshed out well. There's a fair amount of action, all of which is realistic, with Kessler never turning into a Bruce Willis film character to win a shootout against ten baddies.
Fast, well-paced, and well-written. This is a winner, one that I'd recommend to any crime fiction fan.
superb thriller.......2006-11-19
Thirty-five years old Paul Kessler is attracted to forty one years old Judge Carol Macy, who happens to be married to Police Chief Sam Clay. Circumstances soon lead to Paul and Carol having an affair. When Sam confronts Carol, she tosses in his face the knowledge of the young whores he visits complements of Police Lieutenant Greg Vannison. An angry Sam hits Carol who falls just as Greg arrived to witness the squabble; Carol is dead.
Greg arranges for Carol's lover Paul to be considered the prime suspect. One of his goons, police officer Ray Miller, tries to kill Paul with the intent of making it look like suicide, but instead the rogue patrol officer is killed. Other incidents occur with Paul knowing that someone is trying to insure he take the fall for Carol's death without him having an opportunity to tell his side of the story.
Though readers will empathize with Paul, the story line is owned by Vannison, an interesting protagonist who keeps one foot anchored inside the police precinct and another inside the criminal world. His actions whether allowing the mob to kill an informant or set up Paul for the fall while also being a family man makes him a unique character who brings freshness to a superb thriller.

Book Description
Shota is a young Lakota girl who lives in a contemporary American city. When the block that her family and friends live on is threatened by development, they use long-standing Lakota traditions to find a solution that saves their homes. In working together, they create a beautiful quilt that resolves more than just their problem. This story weaves together traditional folktale values with modern concerns for the urban environment and green issues. In addition to the beautiful folk-style native art illustrations, the complete text of the story is presented in Lakota as well as English.

Beautiful; a must-have for any children's lit collection!.......2005-08-04
This is a wonderful book. Whereas most children's literature dealing with Native themes show Native people as existing only in the past, this book shows modern Native people in both urban and reservation settings. The relationship between Shota and her best friend, Esther (who is white), is nicely presented, as are the parallels between the two grandmothers. The drawings are wonderful. The text is presented in both English and Lakota (Sioux), which is very important not only for speakers of Lakota, but so that non-Native children understand that Lakota people have a Lakota language.
What is so outstanding about this book is that it shows adults taking the children seriously. It empowers even young children because it shows that children are capable of finding solutions to problems even when adults are unable to do so. My children also really liked that all of the tenants in the apartment building where Shota and Esther lived were able to band together against the landlord who was threatening to demolish their building.
We are a Native family with dozens of children's Native titles, and this is consistently on our "Top Five!" It has been an honor and a pleasure to be able to share this title with other families and with my children's classmates at school.
Book Description
A multiple-award winning author's relentless classic adventure of deceit, flight, terror and destruction.
The Kyben demolished Deald's World and their armada was heading for Earth. All that stood in their way was a man on Deald's World named Benno Tallant, about as lousy a candidate for hero as one could imagine: junkie, looter, coward, betrayer. The retreating Earth forces decide to make him the last man on Deald's World. They surgically implant a cataclysmic bomb in his body, turn him loose, and let the Kyben hunt him down.
See Benno Run. Run, Benno, Run Like Hell.

See Harlan Run..........2007-07-22
Harlan Ellison fiction is a treat for those who enjoy imaginative and speculative. Here, Ellison dusts off an old manuscript and gives it the audio treatment. It's quite well done. Harlan admits that as he was performing the narrative that he improvised and made certain edits, though I could not tell where these instances occurred. RUN is one of Harlan's classic science-fiction stories, and even though Harlan will protest that he is NOT a science-fiction writer (just listen to any of his recorded lectures), it is clearly science-fiction. But it is good science fiction and smartly done. The price is amazing. I purchased a used copy through Amazon sellers for under $10 bucks and have already listened to the disks several times. We need more recorded Ellison stories and they should be recorded by Harlan himself. He may not be a "professional" actor per se, but no one reads his work in the same style as Harlan. It really makes the experience complete in my humble opinion.

Fireworks, Nudists, and Murder.......2006-08-11
In the 11th book in the Lucy Stone mystery series, the town is up in arms about several issues as they near the annual 4th of July celebration in Tinker's Cove, Maine. It seems that the annual fireworks display will have to be cancelled now that a rare plant is found near the site of the fireworks. The citizens of Tinker's Cove are divided on the issue, and when the town selectman vote to cancel the show, turmoil begins in the small town. This upheaval continues as another large issue is raised...a group of nudists (or naturalists, as they call themselves) finds nearby family swimming area, Blueberry Pond, and publishes it in their newsletter as one of the best places to congregate. Soon, Tinker's Cove is overrun with nude sunbathers, and the usually serene family pond is taken over by naturalists. One of the loudest critics to the nudists turns out to be Lucy's next door neighbor, Prudence Pratt. Pru has had words with Lucy lately over Lucy's dog, Kudo, eating her chickens. Pru has taken Lucy's dog to "court" to have the animal destroyed, and Kudo narrowly escapes with a final warning about his behavior.
The morning after the court appearance, Kudo escapes once again, only to be ruthlessly run over by Pru's son, Wesley. After taking the dog to the vet and finding that he has died, Lucy goes to Pru's home to make sure Wesley's truck was not damaged. When Lucy finds Pru dead, the Stone family quickly becomes prime suspects in the death of the town menace.
I have enjoyed all of the Lucy Stone mysteries in the past, and was disappointed in both the identity of the murderer and the seemingly uncaring attitude toward the dog's death. I heartily agree with previous reviewers regarding how strangely Lucy handled the death of her dog...since Wesley seemed to speed up as he drove away after killing the dog. In my mind, there is no excuse for speeding away after an "accident", and in this case, I felt that Wesley deliberately ran over the dog that had caused his family so many issues. And Lucy's reaction was silly...why should she panic thinking that she would have to pay for damage to his truck? I also found Lucy's reaction to her daughter's nude sunbathing a bit blasé. I expected her and husband, Bill, to be furious about it...but instead they simply shrugged their shoulders and let her continue behavior that bothered them.
I also found the identity of the murderer to be implausible. I was waiting for something more to happen with the lobstermen, or even to have one of the members of the nudists end up as a suspect, but it turned out to be someone who was rarely mentioned in the story and the motive was thin, at best. Normally, I love this series and look forward to future installments. I am hoping to see the next book improve immensely in both plot and in the overall storyline concerning the Stones.
The first book in the series is called "Mistletoe Murder". Enjoy!
Callous Treatment of Animals.......2006-04-03
One star was the rating I gave this book for that was the lowest choice available.
I have read every book in the Lucy Stone series up to this one. "Star Spangled Murder," I read halfway and threw it in the garbage. I have Ms. Meier's next book ordered; if I can't return it I will throw it away unread.
I was first disturbed by this kind family keeping the family dog in almost a cage outside. This paled to the "heroine's" callous reaction to the death of the family pet, worrying that the driver of the car who hit her dog would sue her and going to make amends. I truly was disgusted when I read this.
No more Leslie Meier books for me.
Is 3 stars being too easy?.......2005-12-23
I am giving this book 3 stars but I am not sure it deserves them. This was a pretty lame attempt at telling a cozy story. I have bought other books in the series but this one was the first one I have read. I hope the others are a lot better.
The writing was boring and trite. The murder didn't come til after a 150 pages in or so. And Lucy was not a very proactive protagonist. She stumbled onto the killer. No one would guess who the killer was because they were barely mentioned in the rest of the book.
I would save my money and buy another mystery. Get this one at the library.
Another great Lucy Stone book.......2005-09-02
Leslie Meier's description of life and characters in small-town Maine is entertaining. The dialogue between characters is interesting and often funny. She also usually manages to educate her readers a little bit about the issues that Maine faces today such as expensive heating oil, lobster poaching and the rough economy, but not in a way that drags the stories down. The author's books have been compared to "The cozy", an apt description, because her books invoke a cozy feeling. She never gets too gruesome in her murders, which in my opinion is a plus. Her writing ability, like Lucy Stone's family, grows as the years go by. If you read her entire series of books, you will get to know and like her regular characters; her family, Ms. Tilley, Barney Culpepper, best friend Sue, and more. The Star-Spangled Murder was interesting, full of conflicts, and I had no idea how she was going to wrap it up. It kept me guessing til the end. I wish she wrote more than one book a year and I'll be sure to to buy her next one as soon as it comes out.
Not the greatest.......2005-08-14
I've been disappointed with the last couple of books in the Lucy Stone series. This was by far the weakest of all Meier's books. The plot was thin, the new characters underdeveloped and exsiting characters barely present. I'm glad I got this out of the library and didn't pay for it.

Book Description
The Missouri Bootheel, a six-county region tucked away in the southeastern corner of the "Show-Me State," boasts a unique and intriguing history involving railroad strikes, mob lynchings, and earthquake scares, but what Mike Mitchell, who called the Bootheel home for eighteen years, remembers most is the basketball. Show-Me Kings is Mitchell's tribute to the local legends who made life in rural Missouri and the game of basketball a thrilling and memorable experience.
Customer Reviews:
Mitchell Bangs a Three Pointer!!.......2006-04-05
Being from the Southeast Missouri region and being familiar with many characters of the book made it a "must read" for me. I will admit, my expectations were high, but Mitchell exceeded them with Show-Me Kings. An excellent book about small town Southeast Missouri baketball and how the sport brings a cohesiveness to a community. But, it is more than a book about small town basketball dynasties led by SEMO small town legendary coaches, Ron Cookson and his older brother Carroll Cookson, it is a study into the history of that little region of the state commonly called "the bootheel". It is a great book to share with those you love.
Smalltown Life and Basketball.......2006-02-04
When I ordered this book, I expected to receive a "Hoosiers" type story regarding another small, out of the way, high school basketball team that overcame long odds to win a championship. I would have been very happy with that. But I was even more pleasantly surprised to find that the book served as more of a study of smalltown life and high school sports in America.
Having never been to the Bootheel area of Missouri, I came to this book with no history, no background, and no roadmap. But Mike Mitchell masterfully led me through the ups and downs of the region... weaving stories of families and floods, civic pride and civic strife into a fine collage of Sports Americana.
I had never spent much time thinking about the ways in which local sports affect a region... and the ways that a region affects its local sports. This book was an eye-opener.
Four stars for making me want to do a little research into the sports history of my OWN corner of the world.
Mitchell Madness!!.......2006-02-04
Excellent book. Mitchell truly takes you inside a small town and shows you how SO many different aspects of life can change the way a town thinks, feels and treasures life.
I am already buying copies for friends and family.
A well thought out book that nailed a three pointer!
Bottom of the net.......2006-02-02
Show-Me Kings is a hard-to-put down fast read for all high school hoops junkies and a special treat for fans of small-town Missouri ball. The book focuses on the teams that put Scott County Central High School on the high school basketball map by winning 12 Missouri championships in 18 years in the late '70s through the early '90s, an accomplishment unparalleled in state history.
Mitchell obviously put a lot of work into researching this effort and it shows in his dribble-by-dribble re-creations of Scott County's key contests. He relies heavily on press reports of the games, but he also draws skillfully from interviews of players and coaches to add color, insight, and emotion to his descriptions. Many of his game accounts have a real you-are-there feel to them.
One of the book's more intriguing aspects is the relationship of Ron Cookson, Scott County's demanding country boy coach, and his players, most of whom are black descendants of Missouri Bootheel sharecroppers. The strong bond between player and coach became a seemingly limitless source of energy for Scott County Central's teams, and it carried them to title after title.
Mitchell provides context by presenting a brief history of the Bootheel, one of the state's most distinctive regions. He delves into the checkered race relations of its past, dirty laundry for some but a key to understanding the significance of Scott County's triumphs and Cookson's reciprocated love for his players.
Basketball has long been the #1 sport in southeast Missouri, and Mitchell incorporates the exploits of some of the area's other prominent teams and coaches of the period. A real bonus is his tracing back the basketball lineage of Scott County and other great southeast Missouri teams of the recent past to the legendary fast-breaking, full-court pressing teams of the early '50s from Puxico High School, probably the most renowned high school basketball teams in state history and among the best in the nation during that era.
It is clear that Mitchell believes that basketball in the Missouri Bootheel has been much more than a recreational activity. It has become a source of pride for the area, changed the perceptions of many of its residents, and perhaps even altered the fabric of its society. Show-Me Kings is a very good basketball book, but it's even more than that.
More Than A Regional Story.......2006-01-31
Fantastic book. While the chronicles of a high school basketball dynasty is riveting, I was more amazed at Mitchell's examination of history. He makes you realize how everything is connected. I never thought about how hundreds of years of earthquakes, floods, boll weevils, railroad building, civil rights and religion could explain where everyone lived in Southeast Missouri, and how little decisions, like a man I had never heard of 50 miles from my home town coaching basketball for the first time in 1945, could explain why my high school would never defeat a smaller school just 12 miles away for 50 years. I like books that make you think, and this book makes you think.
Book Description
Constable Jinx Porter is in a fight to keep his elected position against an opponent with power and money. His only ally is his girlfriend, Raven. But Raven, a Reserve Deputy Constable, has problems of her own, and when Jinx betrays her in the worst possible way, Miss Let's-Play-Fair is replaced by Miss Let's-Get-Even-Texas-Style, and Raven knows both roles equally well.
Customer Reviews:
Cops, gypsies, loyalty, betrayal and revenge--Texas style!.......2003-04-15
Actor Larry Hagman endorsed this book, and so do I. In a "He said, she said" format, we see the relationship between Constable Jinx Porter and his loyal Reserve Deputy Constable, Raven, go from loyalty to betrayal to revenge. Jinx is running for re-election after sixteen years as Constable, and his opponent is unworthy but financially well-backed. The only one to help him is the beautiful, politically connected Raven, but when Jinx betrays her with an indiscriminate rendezvous with Loose-Wheel Lucille, Raven turns the tables on him. This is a fun, can't-put-down read that will have you laughing by page two. I loved this book, and would also recommend Moore's second book, THE LADY GODIVA MURDER. I understand the sequel, CONSTABLE'S APPREHENSION has an October 2003 release date. Pick these up. You won't be sorry.

A great feast.......2007-07-25
Delicious recipes and tips from Carmela and the family on planning and hostessing confirmations, graduation parties, weddings and, yes, funerals too! Written in a lively, conversational style with luscious pictures of the food and colorful comments from the story characters.
Classy Kitch.......2007-07-12
As someone who does give a lot of parties, and I am totally at one with the style of Amy Sedaris (I like You, Entertaining under the influence) and always aspired to Carmella's style, I love this book! I like Amy's hilarious book too. They are QUITE different.
I just started watching the Sopranos and having the cook book is cute and fun. I am enjoying the humerous characters giving advice. It is actually very good advice!
As a cook book; it has party menu plans and recipes and they are doable and quite good. Plus, I never would have thought of putting a white serving plate on a white tablecloth with white flowers...really! I am not joking. It never would have crossed my mind! It really does make things look pretty. I think that the photos and menus are great.
I like the review question # 4; I am over the age of 13, hee hee...I am 50 and I have given a lot of parties. I have party anxiety everytime! I especially liked Doctor Melfi's advice on that.
A must for Sopranos fans! ... and here's a good recipe..........2007-04-17
As others have said, the book is a hoot. I especially loved the interview with "Uncle June," who can't stay focused and keeps wandering off on tangents. I did not find too many recipes I wanted to make, but I did try the Pizza Rustica (Easter Pie). I took quite a few liberties with the recipe, including using a ready-made Pillsbury crust, and using only prosciutto and a little bacon instead of all the capicola ("gabagool") and other meats that are suggested. I also didn't use cubes of mozzarella, but did include two cloves of minced garlic which I sauteed with the bacon and prosciutto. The pie was easy, tasted FABULOUS, and looked very pretty and professional when it came out of the pan! It will definitely become a staple in our house.
