Fans of steam-punk and Victorian adventures will love ANTI-ICE by Stephen Baxter. In this book, Baxter flawlessly combines many great SF themes. Victorian exploration, super science, alternate history, and the personal accounts of a minor functionary made this a delight for me to read.
The industrial revolution has come a little early and in an unexpected form. An Antarctic expedition finds a substance called anti-ice. So dubbed because if it starts to warm up, it releases incredible amounts of energy. Thus evolves a British empire like you have never seen. Imagine all the great creations of Verne being controlled by the British and available to the common man. Anti-ice becomes the new fuel of the empire. Its discoverer continually finds new ways to use its power. One such method was to power a flying rocket that he travels the world in. But after some sabotage, he finds himself in space and headed for the moon.
Besides fueling the empire, anti-ice can also be a terrible weapon. And wouldn't you know it, Bismarck is on the march and the French are out to stop him. Look out! If you like alternate history of the great voyages of Verne, this is a book for you.
One of Baxter's Best.......2002-06-27
I'd had a bad experience with Baxter (also known as Timelike Infinity) which had me prepared to ignore anything he wrote. But I'm a sucker for alternate history and Victoriana, so when I heard that Baxter had written an alt-history in which 19th century England gets its hands on antimatter (Kaboom!), I just had to give it a try. And I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.
This book works on a lot of levels. The use of the naive protagonist alongside the newspaper reporter and the professor allows for a lot of exposition without straining the plot. Once you accept the hand-waving explanation of how antimatter got to Earth in a form that 19th century tech could handle, the rest of the technology and history follows pretty logically. And the writing itself is a wonderful pastiche of Wells, Verne, and 19th century English novels in general.
But the aspect of it that I most enjoyed was the political allegory. The parallels of anti-ice technology with nuclear technology followed our own history in many ways: its first use followed by horror at the devastation that it wrought, then an attempt to harness it for peaceful purposes, and finally a cold war in which two super-powers hold weapons of mutually assured destruction. But more subtly, England's domination of France at the end of the book, and France's resentment, could be seen as analogous to US domination of Europe after WWII.
A wonderful science fiction story, but also a lesson on the dangers of the misuse of power, whether it be the destructive power of weaponry or the political forces of imperialism.
A nice piece of fluff - or as fluffy as Baxter ever is........2000-11-02
Not a bad story all round, though it sould be taken with a grain of salt. It is meant as a humorous light-hearted little tale, and as long as you read it in that vein, you won't be disappointed. Personally I found the "super" industrial revolution to be a very intriguing idea, and I really liked that Baxter wasn't afraid to depict man's more bestial side, in turning this "miracle" of Anti-Ice to violent ends.

I really enjoyed this book! Like all of Baxter's work it just seems to have a heck of a lot more meat on its bones than a lot of what I read. Good speculative SUBSTANCE, if you know what I mean. Yes, I had to pick up an encyclopedia and read a few paragraphs on the Crimean War. Took all of two minutes and added exponentially to the depth of the reading experience. Good book, good ideas and a whopper of a finale!

I love this book! Everything is easy to make. Lots of the ingredients are food most people keep as staples. I also like that there are plenty of photos which is always a bonus in a cookbook. I think kids will like most of the recipes. This is a must have for any one who has a family to cook for.

I highly recommend this book. I have tried 4 recipes so far and they really were easy and tasty. I wasn't able to make the crepes because my equipment wasn't very good but I just substituted tortillas!! It is a little more work than I am used to in the kitchen, but it is worth it because they food is so much more interesting with just a little more effort.

This was one of the first cookbooks I got when I was married five years ago and my husband and I really didn't know how to cook. It is a great cookbook for beginners, but really for anyone who wants a quick, tasty, healthy meal on the table very quickly.
Most recipes have very simple instructions, require few ingredients or equpiment, and are extremely user friendly. Plus, there is quite a bit of variety and plenty of great ideas. One thing I really liked was that the book provided cooking charts of ideal times to cook chicken, beef, and pork. As a beginning chef, this is very valuable, because you're pretty intimidated with meat and afraid you'll food poison yourself!
Not to mention, there is nutrition information for all the recipes, which I always find important. If you are health or weight conscious, you'll appreciate that most of the recipes in here are actually quite low in calories, and very healthy. You can simply replace some of the ingredients with low-fat dairy ones to make them even more so. Most recipes serve about four people, so you may want to double them if you have a large family.
Also, there are do-ahead recipes which I'm always on the lookout for, so you can cook a few up in advance and freeze them, and I've found these to be very reliable. It's a great cookbook for busy people, amateur chefs, and just anyone who likes tasty and quick meals. It's paid for itself many times over. You know those cookbooks you get home and there's only one recipe you can use and even with that one it asks you to use items you don't own and buy some spice you can't find? This is NOT one of those cookbooks, thank goodness. Most things can be made effortlessly.

I bought this book for my soon-to-be-married sister-in-law as part of her shower gift. She is a beginning cook with little time on her hands. I wanted to get her a cookbook that I knew she would use instead of letting sit and get dusty on the shelf (or sold in a garage sale for that matter). This is the perfect book for her. The recipes really are easy. They really are good. It is a terrific cookbook to get someone who is a novice and who doesn't want to take the time in preparing something that takes 2 hours. Many of the recipes call for already prepared foods (for example, jarred spaghetti sauce, Bisquick biscuit mix, etc.) Some food snobs may look down on this book for that very reason, but this book is a huge motivator to get new cooks cooking and inspired to try more adventurous recipes and move on to foods that are not pre-packaged. The book contains many tips that will help save time, make substitutions, menu planning, and even location of the food items in the groceries. I am an accomplished cook and purchased the book for myself after giving it to my sister-in-law. My husband even uses it - that has made the purchase worth it right there.

For a working mother of almost two year old twins, this cookbook is definitely great. I can plan out my meals for the whole week just using this cookbook, and what is really great is that the menu now varies. The title is appropriate the meals are good and easy.

I love cookbooks and am always looking at something new. Problem is, I never have time to try the recipes. Well, this book proved different. The recipes are so simple and quick, I tried it out the very first night. I couldn't believe my kids actually ate something that looked so exotic (& easy at the same time). Usually I'm lucky if I can get them to eat mashed potatoes. The recipes vary from simple meals like salads and sandwiches, too more complicated (at least that is the impression I want my husband to have) meals that you could serve to guests (they would never guess it only took you 20 minutes). They even have a prepare ahead section, for those days when you know you will barely have time to breath, let alone cook! I would recommend this cookbook to anyone, especially those Moms, like me, who are busy with soccer pratice, PTA, and other kid related projects.

I just started cooking and looking for new and easy recipes in the last few months.
This book was exactly what I was looking for! It actually makes cooking more fun, ...and easier. It really gets the creative juices flowing! I've already got many recipes marked that I wanna try. The recipes are simple,and can be adjusted to suit what you want. They're actually practical, too. This is stuff people actually eat, it's not just for looks, y'know?
Oh, and it comes in a binder-fashion cover, making it easier to look thru, since you don't have to hold your place. Every page has some sort of little hint or tip, too. Each recipe also includes the nutritional information; calories, carbohydrates etc. There are also several pages that list foods with a shelf life, kitchen gadgets(and what they actually do), 1-step recipes, microwave solutions, a glossary of cooking terms, and time-saving cooking tips.
I especially like that I can take the basics of a recipe, and make it into what I want.
I would recommend this cookbook to beginners and experienced cooks alike.

I picked up this book at my local library, and will be adding it to my collection. No, it is not Martha Stewart. But, included in this colorful cookbook are over 300 recipes to put dinner on the table in 30 minutes or less. Yes, the recipes do contain canned goods, frozen vegetables, and packaged side dishes. However, if you are looking for a quick meal with items from your freezer and pantry, give some recipes a try. Most of the recipes have full color photographs (a big bonus for any cookbook!), a spiral binding that easily lays flat, and information on prep time and bake time. Another thing that this book includes (which many cookbooks lack) is nutrient information including calories, fat grams, sodium, and Diet Exchanges.

I really love this cookbook! There are 11 sections of recipes, including pasta/pizza, chicken/turkey, fish/seafood, vegetarian main dishes, and grilling, and most (but not all) have full color pictures on the facing pages. Each section also has a list of 10 one-step recipes or variations, such as Honey-Citrus Topping for cookies or bananas, or adding fresh raspberries, almonds, and raspberry vinaigrette dressing to a grilled chicken salad.
The ingredients lists are manageable and the steps are simple and written clearly. I have been known to run for McDonald's when I open a cookbook with recipes that require pounding chicken to .78 inch thickness, or long lists of obscure and expensive ingredients.
The recipes provide lots of variety for our family, and they really are quick and easy to prepare. There is a nice range of healthy choices, and some indulgent options as well. Nutritional information, including calories from fat/saturated fat, is provided for each recipe per serving, in addition to Diet Exchange information (number of starches, vegetables, meats, etc.). Most of the recipes are marked for 4 servings.
The format is also user-friendly. Ingredients are listed at the top in bold, and cooking steps are clearly separated from each other, so you can quickly check directions as you go. Since the book has a 5-ring binder format, you get the benefit of having the recipe lay flat, no matter what page you're on.
The section divider pages, which list all the recipes for that chapter, are stored in the back, away from the actual chapters and behind the index, which is rather inconvenient. Fortunately, you can move them if you like, since it's a binder.
Also, while this book offers plenty of great family recipes that you could also use for entertaining, it's not about the unique and gourmet.
While many other books have similar recipes to these here and there, this is the best collection I've found. The pictures and steps make it highly accessible to busy families, and I recommend it!
