Pattern formation in physical systems is one of the major research frontiers of mathematics. A central theme of this book is that many instances of pattern formation can be understood within a single framework: symmetry. This book applies symmetry methods to increasingly complex kinds of dynamic behavior: equilibria, period-doubling, time-periodic states, homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits, and chaos. Examples are drawn from both ODEs and PDEs. This is an advanced book in two-phase flows. It is an excellent reference for researchers in gas-solid processes. The book can also be used as a textbook in a graduate level course. Although there are many practical correlations and examples throughout the book, I found its approach more theoretical than applied.

When a dynamical system has a large number of parameters it is not possible to get a completely comprehensive picture of all the types of behavior that it may display and one must be content with surveying the system along various corridors of lower dimension. Using an example with three differential equations and six parameters it is shown how the available methods of singularity theory, bifurcation analysis, normal forms, etc. can be used to build up a picture of varied and interesting behavior. The model is a generalization of the Gray-Scott reaction scheme in a single stirred vessel to a two-phase reactor consisting of a reaction chamber and a reservoir communicating with each other through a semi-permeable membrane. Two forms exist according as to whether A is fed to the reactor and B to the reservoir or vice-versa, and show interesting differences of behavior. Both models undergo Hopf bifurcations, pitchfork transitions, have homoclinic orbits, take the period doubling route to chaos and one gets there by intermittency. Besides being of interest to mathematicians as an ecological study of a differentiable system, it is hoped that, though idealized, the fact that it corresponds closely to a real type of reactor will make it attractive to control engineers and others as a testing ground for their various methods and devices. This book will be of particular interest to students and researchers in mathematics and engineering , particularly those working in bifurcation or chaos theory.

Differential pressure along the axis and local solids concentration in the fully developed region were measured in a high-density downer (0.025m i.d., 5m high). Chaos analysis was used to study the non-linear and multi-scale flow behavior in the downer. Local solids concentration measurements and global differential pressure measurements in the fully developed region were used to estimate the correlation integral. Pressure fluctuations in the fully developed region of the downer showed bi-fractal behavior. Large-scale behavior corresponded to a low correlation dimension, and small-scale behavior corresponded to a high correlation dimension. FCC particles showed more significant bi-fractal behavior than glass beads. Local flow dynamics from solids concentration measurements were contributed by solids flow of many different scales, namely dispersed particles and clusters of different sizes, so that there was only one scaling region in the log-log plot of correlation integral versus distance. Solids flux was found to significantly affect the correlation dimension.

Single phase chamfered-edge zeolite 4A samples in pure form with a high crystallinity were synthesized by applying step-change of synthesis temperature during hydrothermal treatment of coal fly ash. The calcium binding capacity of these zeolite 4A samples (prepared from coal fly ash) and the commercial detergent grade zeolite 4A were tested for usage as a detergent builder. The results show that these zeolite 4A samples behaved similarly as the commercial one in removing calcium ions during the washing cycle. Moreover, from the leaching tests (evaluation of toxicological safety), the results show that these zeolite 4A samples leached the same elements (Sb, As, Se and Tl) as the commercial one with the concentrations in the same order of magnitude. This shows that the toxicological effect of the coal fly ash converted zeolite 4A was not worse than that of the commercial sample. Finally, economic and environmental aspects of converting coal fly ash to useful products were discussed.

This is one of the best cookbooks using fresh fruits and vegetables I've seen in a long time. I've been cooking and collecting cookbooks for years and to find a gem like this one really excited me. I have purchased several for my store as my customers love natural. The recipes in this book are 'dinner party' quality and outstanding! I'm sure you won't be displeased!

I received this cookbook in December 05. It is now Spring, 07 and I have cooked my way through it. I love it. This book has given me so much more confidence in my cooking abilities. I don't fret when friends come over for dinner because I know I have my SIS Cookbook in hand.
The recipes are simple, easy to prepare with not a lot of ingredients. Typically, they are pretty quick to put togehter. I love that they use in season ingredients and that they are healthy recipes.
The Maple Parsnip Soup and Red Lentil Coconut Curry are two of our favorites! Enjoy!
Great Cookbook!.......2007-04-19
For anyone interested in healthy recipes that are in sync with the seasons I highly recommend this cookbook. I bought it in winter so thus far I have only cooked meals out of the winter section and they have been great (ie. sweet potato black bean burritos). It feels good to be cooking with produce that is in season, I feel like I am doing what I can to help my local economy and also decrease the amount of pollution from my food being flown around the world. There are some religious undertones to the book, I think the authors are Mennonites, I personally don't mind it because it is just a quote or two, but some people may not like that. All in all, great cookbook; buy it!

I like to teach my three school age kids about what produce is in season and how to cook to take advantage of this. These recipes are simple and tasty with great pictures. The only complaint would be that there are not enough recipes!

I was looking for a resource to provide project ideas for children to make as gifts or as art projects for home school kids that really like making crafts. This book is exactly what I hoped it would be. The ideas are simple yet elegant, the instructions are complete and all material needs are clearly outlined. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys making crafts and especially for those that have kids that enjoy making crafts along with them.

I have to agree with a previous poster that most of the projects in here are pretty tacky. Examples- decorating a pumpkin with mardi gras beads, or putting glitter on coin rolls to hand out for Halloween. And there must be 7 or 8 diferent examples of the same painting of candle holders, just for different seasons of the year. In all I found 3 or 4 itmes I may be interested in making. Not very creative. Not worth buying in my opinion.
Great variey of easy projects.......2003-06-25
There is a reason that the words "simply" and "easy" are in the title of this book. The crafts are easy to do. For someone such as myself, who is just begining to learn about the world of crafts, this is a good thing. So really, what you get out of this book will depend on your experience level and how well you can extrapolate from the projects in the book to your own, perhaps more advanced, projects.
As for the style of the projects, they are predominantly country and kitschy, but most of them could be made more sophisticated by choosing other colors or materials. However, there are some elegant projects in the book that can be made without any changes. One such project describes using foam leaf stamps to decorate glass bottles. The examples in the book look handpainted rather than stamped. I was glad to see the project on how to create and add "festive" bows and other embellishments to presents. I especially like the wooden box that was covered with sheets of music. I also like the project that describes how to sponge paint and embellish a tray with pressed flowers.
Most of the projects have step-by step instructions and photos. Some projects are just listed because you don't need in-depth instructions to do them. All the projects are listed by season, but some projects can be changed to fit more than one season. The book also gives you two variations on every major project.
As a bonus, the book has quotes scattered throughout its pages, such as "No one was ever great without some portion of divine inspiration."
If you are interested in learning the basics of a variety of crafts, this book is for you. If you are a more advanced crafter, the ideas within the book might still be inspiring, but you probably already know the basic techniques presented in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone, but realize that not everyone will derive the same amount of enjoyment from its pages.

This book is so good its hard to describe. It is a must read especially when your feeling depressed or down. I was given this book at a time when i thought nothing could help me feel better, but I laughed and cried as a read the pages of this truly wonderful book. I saw myself in so many of the pages it was almost scary. This is the story of a truly wonderful and remarkable woman. I hope she knows how much she has given to women everywhere by writing this awesome book.
