The Truth, Pratchett's 25th Discworld novel, skewers the newspaper business. When printing comes to Ankh-Morpork, it "drag(s) the city kicking and screaming into the Century of the Fruitbat." Well, actually, out of the Century of the Fruitbat. As the Bursar remarks, if the era's almost over, it's high time they embraced its challenges.

William de Worde, well-meaning younger son of reactionary nobility, has been providing a monthly newsletter to the elite using engraving. Then he is struck (and seriously bruised) by the power of the press. The dwarves responsible convince William to expand his letter and the Ankh-Morpork Times is born. Soon William has a staff, including Sacharissa Cripslock, a genteel young lady with a knack for headline writing, and photographer Otto Chriek. Otto's vampirism causes difficulties: flash pictures cause him to crumble to dust and need reconstitution, and he must battle his desire for blood, particularly Sacharissa's. When Lord Vetinari is accused of attempted murder, the City Watch investigates the peculiar circumstances, but William wants to know what really happened. The odds for his survival drop as his questions multiply.

The Truth is satirical, British, and full of sly jokes. Although this cake doesn't rise quite as high as it did in previous volumes, even ordinary Pratchett is pretty darn good, and those who haven't read a Discworld novel before can start here and go on to that incredible backlist. --Nona Vero

Book Description

Terry Pratchett's acclaimed Discworld novels have been number one bestsellers in England for more than a decade. In fact, this prolific author sold more hardcover books in the United Kingdom during the 1900's than any other living novelist. Critically recognized as one of the most celebrated practitioners of satire and parody -- in the company of Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, and Carl Hiaasen -- Pratchett, with his unique brand of irreverent humor, is at last being embraced across America.

In this, his twenty-fifth Discworld novel, Pratchett turns his pen on, well, the pen. Or, rather, the press, and its power to disseminate and create the truth. The lesser son of one of Ankh most privileged families, William de Worde a struggling scribe, hits on the brilliant idea of producing his upper-crust newsletter with a newfangled printing press.

Truer to the family motto, Le Mot juste, than his disapproving father can ever realize, de Worde soon finds that his Ankh-Morpork Times is a success. So big, in fact, that certain nefarious factions would like nothing better than to put him out of business. They begin their own rival Ankh-Morpork Inquirer--full of salacious bits -- to do just that. Soon, though, de Worde has more than just the competition to fret over. Lord Vetinari, the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork, is accused of a serious crime in a seemingly airtight case. But William de Worde knows that facts aren't always the truth. Along with a much too prim and proper assistant, a roving photographer vampire with a nasty reaction to his flashgun, and a talking dog who holds the key to the mystery, William de Worde will stop at nothing to get the truth.

And that's the truth.

A dead-on look at the revered fifth estate, the nature of news, and bareknuckled political intrigue, The Truth shall make you free. From everything else you'd be doing instead of enjoying it, that is.

5 out of 5 stars Terry Pratchett does it again.......2007-09-04

I love Terry Pratchett books. This one was read in one night...laughing my head off.

4 out of 5 stars Funny as always.......2007-07-24

This book was very funny, and as usual when I read a Pratchett book, I find myself laughing aloud as I read it.

This particular book is about the creation of the newspaper industry in the fictional Discworld. It reminded me a lot of "Going Postal" (the first book in this series I read) which traced the beginning of the Postal service in Discworld.

Also thrown in is a parody of the Watergate/ Deep Throat story, and some light parodies of Nixon era conservatism and conservative values:
"Apparently he says he's looking forward to a new era in our history and will put Ankh-Morpork back on the path of responsible citizenship, sir....Apparently he wants a return to the values and traditions that made this city great."
"Does he know what those values and traditions were?" said Vimes, aghast.

The photographer for the newspaper is a vampire with a fascination for flash photography. And if you think a vampire is the last person who should be playing with bright lights, perhaps you can see where some of the humor is going.

Also like the other books in the discworld series, Pratchett does a clever job of explaining away potential anachronisms in his sword and sorcery era fantasy world. For example, there are cameras and tape recorders in this novel, but they are all powered by magical imps. (It is kind of similar to the old Flinstones gag of having all the modern appliances performed by dinosaurs.) Some of it boarders on corny, but mostly its good fun.

5 out of 5 stars Shades of Watergate.......2007-06-16

"The Truth" details the forming of the Discworld's first newspaper. It also features two Tarantino-style bad-guys in the forms of Mr Wint and Mr Kidd... er... rather... Mr Pin and Mr Tulip, a major political scandal, the excitement of editing and "Deep Bone".

William de Worde, scion of the de Worde family and general lay-about, has a good thing going. He writes up an informational letter which he sends to the nobles of the Disc. They pay him in money, or, occasionally, figs.

One day he gets the brilliant notion of publishing this sheet for the consumption of the general population. And so we have the birth of "The Ankh-Morpork Items", or rather, due to a printer's error, the "Times". The "New York Inquirer" it's not. Before long our hero is embroiled in a massive scandal involving the Patrician and a lot of money.

The book, like all the Discworld novels, is set on the Disc, but takes place in our world. Pratchett makes his usual wry observations on the state of humanity (especially when the Patrician comments that what people think they want is news, but what they really crave is olds), and throws in some amusing slapstick ("Spit or swallow? The eternal question").

Really, this is quite a well-rounded novel. It works both as a crime novel and a slight history of the early days of the newspaper industry. You'll also, as is often the case with a Discworld book, learn quite a bit. Where else will you find out what a tosheroon is?

Though newcomers to the series might find some of the references to other characters (the Patrician, Vimes, etc), a little confusing at first, don't worry. You'll figure them out soon enough.

And remember: the truth shall make ye fret!

4 out of 5 stars THIS IS A PLAY.......2006-10-14

Just wanted to note that this is the stage adaptation, not the novel. The reviews coming up on this page seem to be reviews of the original book, not the play. I'd hate for anyone to buy the wrong version.

5 out of 5 stars Discworld.......2006-08-27

I've decided he's too good and too prolific for me to write a brand new review every single time I read one of his books. Discworld currently has 34 titles and every one of them will probably knock your socks off. His mind bubbles and flashes like a boiling pot of electric eels, and I simply can't get enough of his writing.

A reviewer has compared him to Geoffrey Chaucer. He reminds me more of Douglas Adams, or perhaps S Morgenstern. Great company, isn't it? He's an extremely skillful and imaginative writer, damn funny, clever and observant to boot. He's also very easy to read. A master of characterization, and if there's anything else you like about reading that I didn't mention here, assume I simply forgot. He's awesome.

Another reviewer mentioned Jonathan Swift and PG Wodehouse. Why such hallowed company? Because Pratchett belongs there! Truly, I'm enjoying my quest to read every book in the series. You should do the same, and begin your quest at the library because he's got to be there. He's awesome!

Yet another reviewer said Jerome K Jerome meets Lord of the Rings. Yeah, that works too.

Why do we, as reviewers, compare authors to other authors? Because it's easier than thinking. In the case of Terry Pratchett, it's probably because we'd otherwise wind up quoting the guy. He's so unique that we just don't know how else to cope with his greatness. Even this paragraph sounds like foamy drool raving, doesn't it? That's how all readers react to Pratchett. Reviewers simply don't have the good sense to keep it to themselves.

I could call his writing fantasy, but I could likewise call what Douglas Adams wrote science fiction. In both cases, I wouldn't be wrong, but I'd be neglecting so much and just totally missing the point. A rare few authors transcend a genre to such a degree that you know they're shouting out, loud and proud, a big fat "Bite me!"

I love Terry Pratchett's writing, and I completely understand why some folks refer to him as their favorite author. Or favourite, I should say, since we're being British. He's one of those authors that makes you want to grab whoever's in hearing range and start reading passages aloud. I'm simply thrilled that there's such an extremely talented and prolific author who's been working for years without me being aware of him. Now I have much catching up to do, and I will love it.

Book Description

William just wants to get at the truth. Unfortunately, everyone else wants to get at William. And it’s only the third edition. William de Worde is the accidental editor of the Discworld’s first newspaper. Now he must cope with the traditional perils of a journalist’s life – people who want him dead, a recovering vampire with a suicidal fascination for flash photography, some more people who want him dead in a different way and, worst of all, the man who keeps begging him to publish pictures of his humorously shaped potatoes.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The truth is a nuisance.......2005-09-02

And William de Worde sets out to become the very finest nuisance that Ankh-Morpork ever knew. You know it's true, because you read it in the newspaper. The paper that he writes.

This whole book is a tangled story of who is in power, and who wants it, and wouldn't touch it with somebody else's stick. There are good guys, bad guys, and misunderstood guys - but people cross lines in a heartbeat. (Well, not all of them actually have heartbeats, and some of the heartbeats get beaten heartily, but you know what I mean.)

This is standard Pratchett goofiness, but that is a very high standard. He builds his story around a few new characters, but builds it within the framework of the established characters. The current book refers to all the previous ones, but welcomes the new reader anyway.

This is high-grade silliness. It's one more very enjoyable chapter in the Discworld's ongoing saga, but also a good story without all the others. For me, another Discworld book is almost a little vacation.

3 out of 5 stars Not his best.......2004-06-28

Terry Pratchett Discworld novels are always a great and funny read. This one, though very funny at times - Otto the vampire who dies everytime he takes a photo, was great - on the whole I found it a fairly forgettable book. Nothing really new in the plot and some of the more difficult situations that the characters found themselves in seemed to have been gotten out of too easily, with no real suspense.

4 out of 5 stars Terry Pratchett is brilliant - but this book isn't.......2004-06-04

There is always a certain joy in reading any Pratchett book which features familiar places and faces. This book is consistent in style and content with most of his other Discworld novels.

However, at the end of my second reading of this book, there were no particular jokes or paragraphs that I felt like re-reading. Nothing really memorable. As always, there was a large dollop of pop-philosophy, which in some of his books is more amusing/interesting than in this one (c.f. Small Gods, for example).

The introduction of "dark light" to the story seemed to be superficially thought out and unnecessary to the story, adding neither plot nor humour (or "humor" for american readers) nor depth to the reader's understanding of the Discworld.

However, as can always be relied upon, there were some new and unusual characters to enjoy (the vampire who is enthralled with flash iconography) and enough of a plot to retain my interest.

Many of Mr Pratchett's books would get an enthusiastic 5 stars from me; this one barely achieved 4.

5 out of 5 stars In a word . . ........2004-05-21

William de Worde's at loose ends. Scion of a Discworld aristocratic family, he's disdained both their money and their lifestyle. Drifting into the city of Ankh-Morpork, he needs employment. Since he's neither a Thief nor an Assassin, let alone a Seamstress [hem! hem!], he must find employment. Inevitably, it must have to do with words. Not a spy nor a gossip, he generates a newssheet for selected clients - the aristocrats known through his family connections. An encounter with a runaway machine ["Stop the press!"] on the street launches him into a new career. Pratchett's account of de Worde's subsequent history is his finest work. He draws on his own ancient stint as a journalist to provide a story both entertaining and insightful.

There's a rumour about that the dwarfs have learned to turn lead into gold. The printing press is unknown in Ankh-Morpork. The unknown is always fearful, but the dwarfs lust for gold overrides silly superstition. They have a press and only require words to apply their magic transmutation. William, initially reluctant, is there as the catalyst. All he needs is input and it arrives with ferocious intensity.

There has been a crime - always the best news. The Patrician [City Manager], Lord Vetinari, has assaulted his secretary and attempted to abscond with heavy monies. This event brings out the City Watch in the guise of its Commander, Sam Vimes. Most crimes are clear-cut, but this one seems meaningless. We learn a plot's afoot, possibly perpetrated by two strangers in the city. Mr Pim, dedicated and articulate, is accompanied by Mr Tulip, a man of chemical affinities whose language skills are indeterminate. A man whose words are mostly "---" remains difficult to comprehend. As strangers, these two become gradually aware of the forces Ankh-Morpork can unleash.

One of the leashed forces is Gaspode. A scruffy, nondescript canine, Gaspode resides at the end of a piecemeal string borne by Foul Ol' Ron. Ron, whose command of language is more limited than even Mr Tulip's, is a derelict. He and his unsociable companions, however, become the purveyors of Worde's words. That puts them in ideal places to observe. They become almost reporters for The Ankh-Morpork Times. Solving the mystery of Vetinari's assault, plus keeping the Times afloat against competition, plus . . . Well, there's a great deal to this story. No writer matches Pratchett's skill at keeping the reader moving through a book. At the same time, there are necessary pauses for reflection at his revelations. In a word, this book is "priceless"! [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

5 out of 5 stars The Truth about The Vampires' Temperance Union.......2004-01-16

When dwarves smuggle a printing press into Ankh-Morpork, the citizens don't know what to make of it at first. They figure the dwarves are up to their old trick of turning lead into gold. The "Ankh-Morpork Times" ('the truth shall make you fred') is born almost by accident and soon it has a rival in the "Inquirer," which publishes stories like 'Woman gives birth to codfish' and 'Elvis ate my gerbil.'

"The Truth" is a strongly plotted fantasy with serious messages about freedom of the press and ethical journalism. Of course, you're going to have to chuck your sanity out the window when reading one of Pratchett's Discworld books, most especially this one. It might be a good idea to chuck your theology, too. Who knows? If the Universe is infinite, maybe there is a Disc-shaped world somewhere, supported by four elephants on top of a turtle. Maybe their lawyers really are zombies (some excellent characterization here), and the "Ankh-Morpork Times" really has a teetotalling vampire as its press photographer---a vampire who turns to dust every time his flash goes off, and has to be revived with a piece of blutwürst, a bit of dog meat, a drop of blood---whatever is at hand. Hopefully not blood since our Vampire, Otto has given up the b-word.

There is also a pair of very nasty villains named Mr. Pin and Mr. Tulip, who assume the disguises of Brother Upon-Which-the-Angels-Dance Pin and Sister Jennifer of The Little Flowers of Perpetual Annoyance in order to pursue a dog who might blab out what really happened on the morning when Ankh-Morpork's First Patrician was kidnapped by said villains.

(Apology to readers: Pratchett really does induce long, complicated sentences from reviewers who are trying to describe his plots).

So, forget the plot. Read this book because it's hysterically funny and because you can be the first to entertain your friends with songs from the Vampires' Temperance Union.

    Book Description

Many people obstruct their innate potential through repeated patterns of emotional struggle and suffering. This practical, hands-on guide explains why and how people habitually fall into this trap and provides a program, easily incorporated into everyday life, that frees them from this destructive behavior. Using a simple mandala, the book illustrates the four places humans go when they feel threatened, uncomfortable, or aren’t fully centered or grounded in the present moment. Like a trail of pebbles left behind on a hike, it helps trace the path back to the authentic self. Drawing on his three decades of teaching consciousness, Richard Moss plays the role of wise shepherd, accompanying and encouraging the reader on a journey toward the genius within and away from fear and other limitations. Most importantly, he offers an always-available compass that directs readers back to the true self, and into the magic of the present moment.

Dr. Moss brings awareness to all of us. In these chaotic times, I respect him greatly for speaking to the "fear factor" that has been created in our culture. He gives structure to consciously choose to become more "awake" in our own life. If we want a better world, we can not live in fear. I challenge readers to become informed.

5 out of 5 stars Conscious living and innertransformation.......2007-09-12

If you are interested in living more completely in the now then this book is for you. Richard Moss,MD shows us why and how we habitually obstruct our innate potential for what Richard calls radical aliveness as said by Deepak Chopra.

If you want to take a close look at yourself then this book is for you. How simple and direct Dr. Moss is.

5 out of 5 stars The Mandala of Being: Discovering the Power of Awareness.......2007-07-19

Spend just a single day being completely aware of where your thoughts lead you. How often does your mind wander? How much time do you find yourself recalling or analyzing things that happened in your past? How much time do you spend worrying about what might happen in the future? What stories do you make up about yourself in your wanderings? Are you self-sacrificing, underappreciated, and undervalued? Are you hardworking and eagerly climbing the ladder of success? Are you bitter that everyone else seems to catch a break but you get nothing?

Anyone who has ever tried this exercise knows that the majority of our time is spent anywhere but at the present moment. We fixate on the past, we fantasize about the future, we create self serving stories in our minds, and we judge others. Very little of our time is actually fully focused on what we are doing and feeling in this exact moment. So in essense, we rarely focus on the here and now, on the moment.

The Mandala of Being guides the reader to a better understanding of this very human process explaining that these seemingly harmless distractions actually color the way we see ourselves. Basically, all of these stories do two things. They either feed our ego so that we feel that we are somebody special (hiding the underlying feeling that we are not enough as we are) or we opening berate ourselves. The end result in both cases is the same, it reinforces the notion that somehow we have to be, act, or have something specific in order to be valuable human beings.

The simple solution is to have our thoughts stay in the here and now, to see events for what they really are, and to get in touch with our true selves. This may be easy to say but it is extremely hard to do. The Mandala of Being teaches us how to make a start in this attempt and how to counteract some of the major obstacles on this path.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly recomended.......2007-07-17

I have given away 5 copies and just ordered more. Regardless of one's spiritual path this book provides the basic tools to confidently proceed on. I continue to reread this book and get more out of it each time.

    5 out of 5 stars landmark work!.......2007-07-01

So glad to see that all of the reviews here, so far, are positive. I own the book as well and can't recommend it enough to anyone who is serious about being on a spiritual path.

    Book Description

Coloring these mandalas is a soul-enhancing act. Each one is connected to a chakra, a form of life-energy, or a higher power. It aids meditation, brings calm, and opens up your spirit. Gaze at them and feel their force—then fill in the mandalas to access healing energy; knowledge; limitless love; community; friendship; restfulness, and the root and sacral chakras. Every one has mantras, color suggestions, and ideas for drawing.

    4 out of 5 stars nice info.......2007-04-04

I have been mostly pleased with this book. The quality of the paper is good - not the newsprint type that some books have. The designs are on one side of the paper. There are explinations of each mandala and colour suggestions. My only complaint is that some of the designs are very simplistic

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the money! POWERFUL fun too!.......2002-10-22

I am awed by the designs in this book. Each design comes with a short meditation as well as a description of what it is for exactly (such as crown chakra or power) and a suggested coloring sequence (but rules are meant to be broken, the author is the 1st to say). One design to a page so they are suitable for framing--if you don't mind having fewer designs to use & color, but I believe there are 42 or 46, plenty! These are HIGH quality, super powerful designs meant to get the reader out of one's head, and body for that matter. While coloring, I transcended all concepts of time. I suffer from chronic pain and almost immediately upon starting the 1st design, my pain faded away until I no longer even felt the discomfort of sitting in a chair.

This particular book has a design for each chakra, one for power, energy, 2 for healing and so on. A few are bewitching to the eye just to look at in B & W! The concept is to color from the outside in to focus inward and concentrate, or color from the inside out to open oneself up and expand one's awareness outside of self.

This book is well worth the price and I hope it is just the first in a long series of such books by this author. WARNING: Coloring mandalas can be addicting--in a healthy way :-) Especially using TomBow(R) brush markers (they are like a paintbrush in a pen, with a fine-line marker on one end and a TRUE, high quality brush tip on the other, colors FLOW like an extension of the soul...). Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars thorough and handy.......2005-06-08

I have used this book for all sorts of different projects. The images are a big enough size to be re-proportioned for large projects or shrunken down for smaller ones. The source of each image is listed, with a story if applicable. I like this book better than my Mandalas of the World by Rudiger Dahlke. I use it more for artistic than meditation purposes.

The Mandala Astrological Tarot is a beautiful and profound tarot deck that bridges tarot wisdom and iconography and the traditions of astrology. Both disciplines resonate with each other in interesting ways. The square cards contain circular mandala images that resonate and carry the many traditions and cultures embedded in classical tarot: Egypt, Freemasonry, Medieval Europe, India, Rosicrucian and Golden Dawn magical societies. Enjoy the book and also the deck.
