Book Description

The Third Millemium, an unusual novel by Paul Meier, paints a blood-chilling picture of the chaos and confusion of the end times as witnessed by one american family as unforgettably narrated by their guardian angel, Michael.

1 out of 5 stars Why not zero stars?.......2007-09-23

I'm half way through this book and don't know if I can finish it. Please people, don't 5-star rate a book just because it happens to align with your form of religion. This book is terribly written, the characters are wholly unbelievable, and Meier is now on my list of authors never to read again.

I'm actually quite intersted in the subject of this book, but the writing is simply too bad to enjoy. I continue to read it simply for the "car wreck" phenomenon... i just can't look away. Do yourselves a favor and read the actual bible, not this drivel.

1 out of 5 stars An Awful Mix-Up.......2007-09-01

Do not confuse this author (MEIER) and his innocuous but juvenile work with the well-researched and well-written work of Paul L. MAIER. Skip Meier's stuff and read the novel "Pontius Pilate" by Paul L. MAIER.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Meier's Third Millennium.......2007-08-16

One of the most impressionable books I have ever read. My copy is worn almost beyond recognition; having been read so many times. Paul's characters are real and fresh. He knows how to describe them so the reader feels intimate knowledge. That is a prime sign of a good writer.

Spine and spiritual chills are usually generated by the movie or tv media, but this book doesn't need other media to do it. When the Rapture occurs, many Christians believe it will happen just as written, thus the spiritual chills. Another scene I could relate to was the appearance of Moses and Iasiah and their calm demeanor as the world went to hell. While this book must be classed as fiction (aren't all novels?) I keep it on my Praise shelve with Billy Graham, Corrie tenBoom, Lucado, Lewis, Stanley, Bevere, Crouch, etc. etc.

A must read for any "Friend of God".

1 out of 5 stars The only Great Tribulation I've endured is reading this book........2006-01-28

"The Third Millennium" can only be described as a monumental event in the annals of crud. On a literary level, this puppy manages to be even worse than the Left Behind books. As "Left Behind" was one of the most purely awful bricks ever foisted on the book-buying public, that's no mean feat, but undeniably Paul Meier has accomplished it. All I can say is that "The Third Millennium" is the worst children's book I've ever read. I label it a children's book precisely because it's written for children. Characters are cardboard, personalities are told rather than shown, and nearly identical sentences are repeated over and over. Reading Meier is like reading stories by fifth graders; he knows the rules of the English language but can't grasp how to write effective sentences:

"Even though he congratulated himself on being an avant-garde psychiatrist, Larry couldn't supress a conservatism that more than occasionally popped out. His religious Jewsih ancestors had made their indelible mark, which was reflected in the white trim on his gray house. Knowing that he could close the shutters anytime he liked similarly comforted him."

(How many times did you have to read that final sentence before you understood it?)

"The Third Millennium" follows the standard formula of Christian potboilers. A middle class family is minding its own business when suddenly neighbors get raptured, Israel is attacked for no reason, and the United States renames itself "the New Roman Empire". The President does suspiciously anti-Christian things, such as defending the right to privacy and balancing the federal budget. He also announces a plan to implant credit card numbers in everyone's right hand, and invites people to share their comments by dialing 1-800-666-6666. (No, I'm not making this stuff up.) Of course there are long chapters of folks reading the Bible and no shortage of instantaneous conversion scenes worthy of Chick tracts. For the most part, however, the main characters do nothing but sit around watching TV until almost the end of the book. Continuity also slips. Leading man Larry Feinberg is first described as a psychiatrist but later as a physician. His son Ben starts out as a medical student but later we're told that he's a math major. Ben's girlfriend Cindy is supposedly blind, but that doesn't stop her from seeing a hippy-like classmate who turns out to be an angel.

Of course complaints like these miss the point, as even fans of "The Third Millennium" admit that the writing is pretty nasty. The appeal lies in the supposed fact that this stuff is all biblically kosher and will be coming true any minute now. In fact Meier tacks on an Acknowledgment section where he congratulates himself for his "compulsive quest for accuracy and feasibility". Hmmm, let's see here. Meier has Jews performing animal sacrifices in Jerusalem, apparently unaware that even the Orthodox halted ritual sacrifice centuries ago. He mentions "the ancient Muslim Empire of Babylon"; Babylon came and went thousands of years before the founding of Islam. One character claims that Hitler started the extermination of the Jews on 1942 on Av 9 (Av is a month in the Jewish calendar). Unfortunately for him, the Holocaust actually started years earlier, in 1939.

Then there's the prophecies. Practically half the book is devoted to having a dude named Jimmy lecture us on how many biblical prophecies have come true. (The fact that Jimmy is a used car salesman, a profession not known for honesty, makes this unintentionally apt.) Debunking every claim in the book would frankly tax my patience and exceed amazon's 1,000 word limit, but I'll give a small sample. Consider this from page 79:

"Turn to Ezekiel 4:4-6 and note what God had the prophet do. He lay on his side for 430 days to signify that Israel would be in another exile for 430 years. ... Because of their lack of repentance, their punishment was multiplied sevenfold, as Moses had warned it would be in the Torah in Leviticus 26. Sounds strange until you add it to 536 B.C. I'm going to translate this into the modern calendar. Anybody recognize the significance of this date? May 14, 1948, the date modern Israel was founded."

Let's see here. The number of years between 536 B.C. and 1948 A.D. is 536+1948=2484. On the other hand, a 430 year punishment multiplied by seven is 7*430=2910. Now I think 2484 is not the same number as 2910, unless conservatives have decided to replace math with 'intelligent arithmetic'. I would submit that most of Meier's other claims fall apart in a similar manner.

To give credit where credit is due, Meier's predictions are not totally off the mark. Describing the President of the United States, he says the following: "There were no restraints on his pursuit of his own ends." If that doesn't perfectly capture the attitude of our current chief executive, I don't know what does. Other than that, however, Meier's attempt to fortell the future seems to have hit a bum steer. How it is that garbage like this hogs the spotlight while great Christian authors such as R. A. Lafferty and Gene Wolfe languish in obscurity, I don't know.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-08-12

I first read this book a few years ago. I gave my first issue to a member of our church. I wanted so much to read it again, I purchased another one. Believe it or not, I gave this one to someone also after I read it again. Now, I'm getting another copy to keep in my library. I have the desire to read it and the sequel "The Fourth Millenium". Even though it is written fictionally, there are many truths in it, regarding the end times. If you read your Bible along with it, it may just answer some questions to him or her who is seeking God. Excellent book.

      Book Description

Francell Lee Schrader has read and studied the three hundred and sixty-four impressive letters of this fourteenth century saint still extant and has included many beautiful and poetic quotations from them in this volume. Saint Catherine of Siena was born in Renaissance Italy in 1347. She was not only a person of great goodness, but she was really the first lady to use her own brilliant intellect and Divine Light in the world of men and actually bring about many changes. Her correspondence with King, Pope, Prince, and Military Leader achieved amazing things, and as an International Peace Negotiator she prevented some wars and brought Peace in others. All this in an age where no lady had ever before attempted such things.

Saint Catherine of Siena is one of only three ladies to have the Title "Doctor of the Church." The author sees in Catherine, who has been one of her favorite saints since childhood, a forerunner of all the marvelous brilliant lady leaders doing great things in the present day, and she hopes readers will find her story a joy and perhaps an inspiration for their own lives.

This book is a work of art containing vivid descriptions of many beauties of the Renaissance, which the reader will treasure always.

      Book Description

Tony Griffiths' Scandinavia is a compact, sharp, and accessible introduction to the history, politics and culture of Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark, from the Napoleonic era to the present. His lively narrative brings to life the modern history of the region, demolishing national stereotypes in the process. No other book illuminates so tellingly the salient events and personalities of modern Scandinavia, including artists, musicians, and intellectuals such as Ibsen, Bergman, Kierkegaard, Munch, and Sibelius. This combination of a detailed look at Scandinavian culture and politics within a concise and thorough history makes this book the first and only of its kind, and unravels the mysteries and misunderstandings of this region and its people.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not quite outstanding.......2006-04-26

This is a useful, competent, and satisfying, but not quite outstanding overview of Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish history since 1800. It covers all the main events, introduces the main artistic and political personalities, and is written in a direct and easy-to-read style. I was pleased that the author is not among the pedants who insist that Finland is "Nordic but not Scandinavian." He ignores this distinction completely and gives Finland plenty of space in the book, as it deserves. I was surprised that he often seems a bit cynical about Scandinavia and sometimes presents its history in a slightly defeatist tone -- perhaps his intention is to be tongue in cheek but I wasn't always sure.

The book falls short in a few areas. It contains not a single photograph or illustration. While the author writes fluently, one wishes more work had been put into creating a truly pleasant experience for the reader: paragraphs are long, the narration sometimes loses track of what the reader knows, and the use of metaphor gets a bit stretched sometimes. There are a few editing errors (the story of Krueger matches repeats in two slightly different versions, and the Danish section of the bibliography seems to have been omitted). This is too bad because the book is basically pretty good and a little more work could have produced a book that readers would really savor.

2 out of 5 stars Frightening portrayal of the future.......2004-05-09

The first time I read this book was for a social studies project in ninth grade. At the time, I found it disconcerting for its view that religion and traditional values are futile, and that humanity will eventually become God-like in its ability to surmount nature. Looking back now from the perspective of another ten years of education - I can see that this book is a late 20th century manifestation of the deterministic narrative of perpetual progress through reason alone that was perfected by Hegel, Toynbee and Marx in the last century. History has shown that human progress is not always inevitable, and that both traditional values and religion are resilient in the face of change. Jefferson believed we would all be Unitarians by the second American century. Evangelicalism is on the rise in America in the early 21st century. All in all, this book is interesting but frightening - if only for what it says about the "progressive" movement's grand design for humanity.

3 out of 5 stars A thousand years of history..........2002-09-05

...that should have happened within only a few hundred years. Scientific development, political trends, changing social issues and even developing philosophies happen so slowly in this book, that you wonder why the cockroachs haven't taken over by the end of the book!
Lets skip the fact that the English used in the book should be totally different by the end of the 30th century.
But the book is FULL of interesting ideas and details about the future and, if not taken too seriously, should be enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting Look At The Next 1000 years of Human History.......2002-05-11

I originally picked this book up back when it was published in 1985. Stableford and Langford have put together a futuristic history book looking backwards from the year 3000 A.D.

The book it broken out in sections that cover 200-300 years of time. For example, the years 2000-2190 are called The years of Crisis, as civillization is taken to the brink of conventional, nuclear and biological war. The predictions are presented like news articles. They cover global events, economic stituations, entertainment, and medical advances.
Its interesting at some of the future concepts that the authors posed back in 1985 in retrospect of the present.
"The Third Millenium" theorizes that more 3rd world-like countries will have nuclear weapons. Countries like Brazil, Argentina and Iraq or all places will have nuclear weapons. Its interesting, since when the book was published, Iraq was friendly toward the United States. In no way could the authors predict the current world situation.

Same goes for medical situations in 2050 A.D. as a AIDs-like virus is prevalent and cured in the span of 10-20 years. AIDs was still relatively unknown when the book was published.

Later centuries cover the "Age Of Recovery", as civillization start to merge into one world governments, and strides are made in peace and prosperity. The UN is speculated as contributing a large role as the peacekeepers of the world and humanity.

The final three centuries deal with "Age Of Transformation", as science prevails in curing most diseases, discovering immortality, to creating new life-forms.
The approach takes on that no other intelligent "alien" life has been dicovered, implying that perhaps we are alone in the universe.
I did, however, have a problem with the Christianity bashing the authors sprinkle in their book.
The year 2000 has come and gone. Christ hasn't returned, so people have lost their faith in Christianity. They discover that religion is just pablum for the masses, which in this day and age after Sept 11th, is the direct opposite. Stableford and Langford selve Christianity with Maxisim, saying they are both doomed belief systems. In their universe, in the 1000 year span they cover, Christ has never returned. So therefore if Chist never returns, then Christianity is false. I couldn't disagree more with that assumption. If they disagree with the bible that is one thing, but at least know about your subject matter before making an attempt to invalidate it. Jesus never gave a date when he would return. "I will come like a thief in the night" he said. Do you know when a thief will strike your house? No, I think not.

4 out of 5 stars An amazing future history! But progresses much too slow..........2001-05-14

Unlike many books in this genre, "The Third Millennium" succeeds in conveying the illusion of a real historical account. In fact, this is the only book I've ever seen which truly deserves the name "a fictional future HISTORY".

The steady progress from the turmoiled 21st century to the utopia-like 30th, is portrayed with incredibe realism and vividness. If I'd want to give this book a rating solely as a work of fiction, I would have given it 6 stars...

But "The Third Millennium" is not a mere work of fiction. As the authors point out on the back cover, it is a serious attempt to portray a realistic future of the real World. And in this respect, the book suffers from one fatal flaw: In terms of absolute dates, the progress of events is agonizingly slow.

A few events and their dates would make this complaint clear. In this book, fusion energy is harnessed only in 2054 AD, and becomes dominant near 2180 AD. Genetic engineering in humans begin after 2227 AD. Unmanned probes to nearby stars, powered by nuclear fusion, are launched only in the 26th century...

      Very slow indeed.

A more understandable glitch is the failure to predict the fall of the USSR. In this book, the cold war continues well into the 22nd century.

Since no one in their right minds thought in 1985 that the USSR is going down in the near future, I do not hold this particular mistake against the authors. But the agonizingly slow progress of technology in their scenario is something I will not forgive that easily.

It is this sluggish pace of progress is what turns this book from "a perfect masterpiece" to "a great idea ruined by one bad call".

And what a masterpiece it would have been! After all, there aren't many works that get a rating of 4 stars after being ruined, are there?

4 out of 5 stars my impressions of this book........1997-06-22

The authors of this book, while not getting every little nuance of the future correct (I am writing this 12 years after the book was published and have read it several times, the first time 4 years ago) have presented a very plausable and believeable future that people can look forward to. This story of the future is not glorious like star trek, or bleak like the road warrior. It is the story of humans learning and fumbling there way through life, as they have always done. It is the most believeable picture of the future I have read even though it is so old. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in what challenges lie ahead for us, and how we will respond. I have often wondered if the authors will update the book, including new findings and ensights, but have not heard anything yet. enjoy!! I can be reached an proc@pacbell.net.

Publisher Description: Modern evangelical theology is flooded with conflicting viewpoints. Many of these disagreements arise between denominations, while others permeate denominations and individual churches. The apparent hopelessness of reaching theological unity has even led some Christians to deny the value of theology altogether. With so many different ideas competing for our loyalty, how are followers of Jesus to determine what to believe? And how committed should we be to specific doctrines and traditions? In this four-part series, Dr. Richard L. Pratt, Jr., discusses the foundations for Christian theology and describes a responsible, scriptural method for believers to use in developing their own theological convictions. Book Description

Like Helen Schucman of A Course in Miracles, Mari Perron followed a process of inner dictation whose source was Jesus. The result of that channeling -- this series of teachings -- continually returns to a central theme: the heart knows more than the mind. The book challenges the idea that people are isolated individuals, arguing that everyone is integrally connected with each other and with the universe and that answers lie in union rather than separation.

                  5 out of 5 stars A beautiful Gift.......2006-04-07

Mari Perron's "A Course of Love" is exquisitely beautiful, a true gem.
I was led to this after years of intensely studying"A Course in Miracles" and will be forever grateful for having been guided to this next, all necessary step.
I see it as a most important complement to the Course because of its focus on the heart, while it can certainly also stand completely on its own and guide one into Awakening to the Christ Mind. I have given this to lots of friends and have without fail experienced a wide opening of the Heart Chakra. If you are not into a mere intellectual approach but ready to experience the 4th dimensional consciousness through a gentle, tender opening of your heart, then this gorgeous book is for you.
Make yourself a great joy and add to your library a book you will eternally treasure!

                  5 out of 5 stars definitely lfe-changing!.......2005-01-22

A friend gave me a spiral-bound manuscript of this work, a pre-publication version, which I have been savoring...a few pages each day. I have found myself "selling the praises" of this incredible work on a one-on-one basis. Today I realized that I could increase the audience for my praise by posting a review here. So here goes:

The truths and principles in this work can be life-changing if one allows oneself to take it in slowly, without getting hung up on how it came to be or the authorship. Wear the words for yourself without pre-judgement and your life can be enhanced.

I've been around the block a few times when it comes to self-help, personal development and spiritual literature. Hey, I've even authored some! THIS WORK IS TRANFORMING ME.

It truly is a "must read" for anyone who claims to be seeking enlightenment.

5 out of 5 stars The next step beyond "A Course in Miracles". . ........2004-10-09

I interviewed Mari Perron, who channeled this work, for this book review. She is a genuinely humble individual who is articulate and very attuned to the values of ACIM. Much about the initiation of ACOL can be found on her web site (http://www.acourseoflove.com). Those who have studied "A Course in Miracles" were identified to her as the best audience of the Course of Love series, because they are ready for it. Indeed, the works, three in all, were presented to Mari as "another Course of Miracles." It is true that others have believed themselves to be channeling for Jesus in the years since ACIM; I make no judgment about any of these works, but do encourage you to check out ACOL.

                  5 out of 5 stars Profoundly Insightful..........2002-07-02

I have read "the course" now twice with each time bringing me new and life changing instights. As a Sun Dancer, I am always looking for Spirit to manifest continually in my life. This book has greatly increased my self awareness and assisted in bringing movement to still-stubborn areas in my life.

It truly is time to "Get on with it!" Let this book help you.

No accompanying books are needed to help you complete the lesson activities. Why can t learning be fun? It can! Linguaphone has chosen to present the allTalk 1-2-3 in an entertaining, soap-opera format. No dry old teacher with a monotone voice putting you to sleep, you follow the adventures of a visitor to a Spanish-speaking country as she interacts with individuals in a variety of interesting situations, learning the language and beginning to understand the culture. Actually learn the language Tired of spending money on language courses that don t work? Did you ever think the problem could be with the course and not you? With Linguaphone s unique learning sequence: Listen, Understand, Speak, you will find yourself actually using the language in no time at all! You are presented with a unit of the language, it is then broken down and explained to you, then you put it back together with greater understanding than just repeating what you may not have understood in the first place. You don't just study the language--you gain real proficiency in using your new language! . . . and learn it well! The allTalk methodology not only teaches well, but will take you to full intermediate level in speaking and understanding spoken Spanish. Other popular all-audio courses require three times the cds, three times the money and three times the time to do what Linguaphone s allTalk does with 16-one hour cds.
