Book Description
Throughout human history, mankind has turned its goals and dreams toward exploration. With wagon trains, ships, satellites and starships, humanity has chosen to seek out the new frontier, to explore new worlds, and to go where no human has gone before-even to the furthest reaches of the Delta Quadrant. There, Captain Janeway and the crew of the Starship Voyager have discovered many strange and wondrous civilizations...but few as alien as the Chiar.
An advanced and scienti?c people who have made great strides with nanotechnology, the Chiar expanded internally rather than externally. Every inch of their planet is crawling with the tiniest bits and pieces of arti?cial intelligence imaginable, working in concert as the new lifeblood of this mechanical world. The people themselves are inseparable from their nanites, which layer their skin and provide extra limbs or senses as required.
Caught up in a bitter civil con?ict, some Chiar will try to take advantage of their meeting with the crew of Starship Voyager. They imagine that their homegrown nanites can harness the incredible power of the deadly Borg, and instead set in motion an experiment that goes devastatingly out of control.

A Very Good Read!.......2004-05-25
I think this book was probably one of the better Voyager books I have read. It took me about 2-3 days to read completely, but once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. I strongly suggest this book to anyone who likes Voyager or just Star Trek in General.
Nanotech Rocks!.......2004-01-26
I thoroughly enjoyed Star Trek Voyager Nanothech War! The suspense and deep emotion of this book kept me coming back for more. The characters are very likeable, and I also think that the book was very well written. I won't ruin it for you by telling you exactly what happens, but I think it's safe to say that the emotional developement of Seven of Nine was very well played out in this book. I rate it five stars. Read it! Nanotech Rocks!
Enjoyable Science Fiction.......2003-08-15
The starship Voyager, in need of repairs after an ion storm, arrives at the planet Chiar, which has just aquired warp drive technology. The Chiar use nanotechnology in every aspect of their lives, it is ubiquitous there, and they seem peaceful enough. They are willing to help the Voyager crew with repairs, in exchange for minor software items, but it is soon learned that the Chair are in the midst of global strife, and several factions want the Borg nanotechnology that Seven incorporates in her body, to supplement their own nanotechnology and aid them in their war effort. The characters of Seven of Nine, Tom Paris, B'Elanna, and Chakotay are highlighted with good character development inside a superb storyline.
I would classify this as a light summer read, great for Star Trek fans and sci-fi readers in general. The story has an interesting twist near the end as well.
Charming and relaxing!.......2003-08-07
I enjoyed reading about Chakatoy and Seven's relationships at the holdeck.Tom and Seven are held hostage. Tom's memory had been erased by the nanties. I felt sorry for Tom. A lovely touch at the end. It was very relaxing to read.
Fun Read!.......2003-07-07
Piziks does a fine job with the VOYAGER crew. You can hear them saying these lines in your head! The aliens are way cool, and the plot kept me turning pages.
I also found out he writes "regular" science novels under the name Steven Harper. I don't know why he uses a pen name for these books, but they're also great reads!

The best glossary for students.......2007-01-10
Other reviewers have given comments on the lessons. I would just like to add some observations on the lengthy glossary that Lambdin includes (pp. 210-363). The last few pages (359-63) are a dictionary of the Greek words used in Lambdin's reading selections. These are a welcome oasis in the sparsely populated desert of the lexicography of Greek as used in Coptic.
What I most want to praise in Lambdin's glossary is the inclusion of copious lists of variant forms of roots, which abound in Coptic. At the end of the regular entries for each letter, there is an alphabetical list of variant root forms beginning with that letter, and each form is followed by the root you should look for in the main list of entries. Most of the time it starts with the same letter, but sometimes it doesn't. This listing of variant roots is a godsend for beginning students!
A lucid and enjoyable textbook.......2006-07-03
Thomas Lambdin is one of the very few people who writes language textbooks so clear and enjoyable that they read almost like a novel. This book, like his textbooks of Biblical Hebrew and Ge'ez, is clear and well-organized. It presents enough information in each chapter as not to leave the student wondering but not so much as to overwhelm. The student who works dilligently through this book will emerge with both a good understanding of the structure of Coptic and the ability to read original texts so long as they do not present excessive philological difficulty. That is as much as one could ask, since the reading of obscure texts is a subject for more advanced study, not an introductory course. This is by far the best textbook of Coptic that I have encountered, and indeed one of the best textbooks of any written language.
Excellent Textbook.......2006-05-04
I highly suggest this book. Unlike many introductory grammars, this text moves systematically from the least complex sentences to the most complex, introducing idiomatic expressions as one goes along. The effectiveness of his progression was very helpful for myself, as my class only had a semester to cover the bulk of this book (the first 25 lessons). The book focuses, rightly, on the various uses of the Coptic verb, but does not neglect a thorough explanation of Coptic grammar, and an introduction to the linguistic peculiarities of the language. It seems to be written for someone who has at least some background knowledge in Greek, however this should not prevent an absolute beginner from being to pick up this book and learn the language. Finally, the book uses common phrases in its exercises, such as one might find in apocryphal or canonical gospels, so that the reader develops a catalogue of phrases (vastly important in Coptic).
My only criticism is that the texts which he uses and the way he writes Coptic are far too edited and standardized, compared with the nature of the originals themselves. Had he risked having a more anomalous text, the students might be better prepared for studying manuscripts themselves.
A Stand-Alone Introduction into the Language.......2001-03-27
Lambdin's textbook is really unique in its presentation; he divides the book into three parts: the first is broken into 36 lessons with vocabulary, grammar and practice exercises to assist the student in the study of Sa'idic Coptic; the second is a collection of Coptic writings (all religious) for the student to work on once he has finished the lessons in Part One; and the third part is a brief lexicon for those who don't want to spend $90 for Crum's Dictionary (although I highly recommend any serious student of Coptic acquire Crum's dictionary, which was reprinted last year by the Oxford University Press). When you finish this course, you really are ready to read original Coptic texts with the assistance of a dictionary. The E.J. Brill Press has put out a number of books with Coptic texts, including the Nag Hammadi library (see my review for more information) and a catalogue of the Coptic texts in the A.S. Pushkin Museum in Moscow, and there are other publications aimed at the Coptic Christian community, though many of these are in Bohairic, which you will need Crum's dictionary for.

Bit by Bit we learn about african faiths.......2004-06-24
This is THE starting point for inquiry into African Religion. Its written with enough familiarity and distance to make you feel comfortable...that is it wont scare you away while you're deciding if "african religion is for me".
its actually written as a classroom text, complete with Q&A sections. i have read it at least 5 times over the years and i thoroughly enjoy it each time. i recommend it to any that is presently considering practicing an african religion.
A Well Organized Book Dealing With The Religions of Africa.......2002-10-25
Mbiti has done a great job with the organization of this book. This book is very easy to just sit down and read for anyone, not just students. There is not a whole lot of texts that can provide insight into the world of African religions but Mbiti has put together a text that allows one to study the riches of the African hertiage. When a book like this is written it helps to put down the numberous stereotypes about the way Africans live there life. He does not go into great detail about any one culture specifically but shows how religion functions in their daily life.
Great Guide to African Religion South of the Sahara.......2000-11-06
If you have ever wanted to know about the religions of Africa in general, this is the book for you. This is sort of the beginners guide to African religions and spirituality. Its worth noting that this book focuses on the religions native to Africa, but does give some brief mention of Islam and Christianity as well as the role that other religions play in Africa today. Mbiti certainly knows what he is talking about, and gives us a overviews of some of the common themes and ideas that are widespread in African religion, and the ceremonies and customs that are still present in Africa. And, as he points out, almost all African religions are monotheistic. However, the part which I liked the most was the section of African proverbs at the end. If you would like to learn more about African religion, I suggest that you look at this book.
Book Description
A concise and accessible history
A brief history of black Christian churches in the United States has long been needed. Larger sociological and historical studies have enhanced the picture of the historically black denominations. At the same time, black-church members need a handy introduction to their own religious homes, as do college students of American history and religion.
This volume, co-authored by a black minister and a black theologian, provides an overview of the shape and history of major black religious bodies: Methodist, Baptist, and Pentecostal. It introduces the denominations and their demographics before relating their historical developmentfrom the eighteenth century to the end of the Civil Rights Movementinto the groups we know today. A final chapter sketches the state of the black Christian church bodies today and their ongoing contributions to a more just American society.
The Pinns' book will help a new generation of black Americans assess its religious legacy and the larger society to gauge its social import.

The God of Slavery.......2006-02-25
I like this book because it is very informative on religious instruction of slaves and the formation of black churches. I like the format of the book and it's accuracy. It tells the suffering of African Americans to gain freedom of religion. It shows their faith in God for the journey and His hand of mercy, grace, and justice. It is rich in black history.
Book Description
This book is a comprehensive survey of African American Christian Religious Education (AACRE). It addresses historical, theological, and ministerial issues. The book defines concepts and explores history, considers the diverse voices that are addressing AACRE, and then focuses on educational theory and practice. Religious Education in the African American Tradition considers a diversity of voices, including those of evangelical, Pentecostal, liberation, and womanist theologians.

First of it's kind.......2007-05-17
Hill's text is an excellent and thorough precis on the pedagogical, theological, and historical variables in African-American Christian Education. It is a must read for any student who is interested in understanding what, why, and how the African-American Church teaches the operational and confessional affirmations of black religiosity.

African Traditional Religions in Contemporary Society
ASIN: 0786418354 |
Book Description
African traditional religion is a spiritual lifestyle followed by millions of people around the world. Some scholars argue it is related to the religion practiced by the African Egyptians during the Dynastic period. The Yoruba, Dagara, and Ibo cultures, particularly as they relate to cosmology, symbolism, and ritual, are fundamental to the traditional religious system.
This study examines the nature of African traditional religion in an effort to determine the common attributes of the religion of the continent, focusing on the West African experience. This study analyzes concepts in African traditional religion by isolating key elements in the Yoruba, Dagara, and Ibo cultures. Principal elements isolated include sacrifice, salvation, revelation and divination, as well as African resilience in the face of invasions, colonization and various outside religious assaults. The study also considers the influence of Christianity and Islam.
