3 out of 5 stars Pick it up for artwork alone!.......2007-03-25

This is one of my favorite trades simply because Skottie Young's artwork is so outstanding. Along with artists like Humberto Ramos (Check out Spider-Man: Return of the Goblin), his pencils are just dripping with incredible style.

The story in this arc is interesting, despite the space-overlord-nano-spider-bot conspiracy and all (I guess you had to be following the series to fully understand what's happening). It's just great to see Spidey and Venom going at it, especially with another symbiote and FF thrown into the mix.

My only complaint is that Young's layout could stand a few rules of cinematography to smooth out the transition from panel to panel.

4 out of 5 stars Finally! Daniel Way's Venom is...... okay, I guess........2005-01-26

The fight scene between Spider-Man and the original Venom MAKES this book, as well as the scene where Spidey tosses Thing off the Fantasticar in order to divert Invisible Woman. The latter is hillarious, but that fight scene is, at least to me, worth the price of admission alone. Why couldn't Way make this a Spider-Man vs. Venom title, instead of a "Venom's clone involved in a Bruce Jones' Hulk-style conspiracy" story? C'mon. Who cares about robotic clones from Shield and space-age tech-spiders and all that crap? Have Spidey fighting Venom, throw in the Fantastic Four (I always love it when the FF gets involved with Spidey & Venom's battles) and this would totally rock. Oh, and let Kyle Hotz draw it. YEAH!

    Book Description

You open the kitchen cabinet, reach for the jar of peanut butter, and there on its top are mice droppings. What's the safest means to be rid of the mice? In Ask the Bugman, Board Certified Entomologist Richard Fagerlund offers advice on pest control drawn from answers to commonly asked questions in his nationally distributed newspaper column. For mice, live traps are best, using oatmeal as bait. Never use poisons or glue boards. He also encourages preventive measures to plug the holes mice use as entrances.

With thirty-years' experience in pest control, Fagerlund offers suggestions for controlling nearly fifty common (and a few not so common) pests found in and around the home. The questions are divided into categories including disruptive pests, destructive pests, biters and stingers, reptiles and rodents, and garden and household bugs. But what separates Ask the Bugman from other such books is its environmental ethic, which is carefully laid out in the principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Typical IPM methods include habitat modification, improved sanitation, and the use of less-toxic, pest-specific baits. As alternatives to harmful chemicals, he counsels use of home remedies, provides a number of these, and includes others sent in by readers of his column. Ten original sketches of common household pests give readers an appreciation of their appearance.

How to control household pests in a more environmentally friendly way.

5 out of 5 stars Controlling mice, termites, bed bugs & more.......2002-07-07

Environmentally safe, effective ways of controlling mice, termites, bed bugs and other common household insects and creatures are revealed in Ask The Bugman!, a guide which uses a question and answer format to impart the basics, and a chapter organization by type of pest ("Biters and Stingers", "Ants") make answers quick to find. An excellent, basic guide to pest control options.

5 out of 5 stars Best book of its kind available.......2002-03-10

This is an excellent book on how to control pests without using toxic chemicals or pest control companies. It is full of great ideas and excellent drawings. It is also entertaining when people, especially the school children, list their least favorite bugs. There is even a great short piece on hemp which makes the book a little controversial. Informative, entertaining and controversial equals very interesting. It is worth every penny...

    Book Description

Every year Americans use a staggering five hundred million pounds of toxic pesticides in and around their homes, schools, parks, and roads--a growing health risk for people and the environment. But are these poisons really necessary? This book, appealing to the hunter in us all, shows how to triumph in combat with pests without losing the war to toxic chemicals. Tiny Game Hunting, written in a lively and entertaining style and illustrated with detailed drawings, gives more than two hundred tried-and-true ways to control or kill common household and garden pests without using toxic pesticides.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Goodbye Gophers!.......2005-08-25

Tiny game hunting was the only book that covered getting rid of gophers extensively. All other books had one sentence. I tried the tips they suggested and it worked. I felt better reading this book and knowing I am not alone.

I learned a lot about taking care of my front yard and when various pests come onto the scene. This book was suggested to me by the clerk at the library who also had good results in getting rid of a pest.

The book also has some cute drawings of the various pests. This is the book for anyone who wants to follow the healthy and environmentally safe way to keep unwanted pests from their lawns and gardens.

5 out of 5 stars Lose the Poisons, Gain Health.......2002-05-28

This book was just what I was looking for to keep my medium-sized yard and tiny garden in shape without adding to the chemical burden of my home town. I got accurate, easy advice that turned out in most cases to be more effective and less work than spraying with a chemical cocktail. Now I'm purchasing a copy for my neighbor, in the hopes that he'll see the light.

5 out of 5 stars Tiny Game Hunting... two thumbs way up!.......2000-03-02

This could be the most useful book I own. It gets more use than my dictionary. Tiny Game Hunting offers practical and effective methods of capturing or killing common household and garden pests; everying from insects and spiders, to lizards and smakes, and mice and gophers. It focuses on environmentally safe extermination methods. Many of the traps, repellents, and pesticides can be made cheaply with common items found in the kitchen or garage. More than just pest control, the book offers some basic information on the habits and history of the critters. Have a problem with a pest? I bet it's in here. It's honestly one of the best books I'll ever own!

Now able to change human hosts in the blink of an eye, he's on the run from mysterious clandestine forces, each with their own agenda for the deadly, elusive alien.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Uh...Well...........2004-07-30

As a fan of Venom, I'm a tad biased, so I don't totally HATE this book... in fact, if a few things were different, I might actually consider it pretty good.

First of all, the art is simply UGLY. It doesn't fit the tone at all. I've heard that Herrarra has done much better work on other titles... here his work looks like Humberto Ramos drew it while riding on a four-wheeler. And while I'm at it, I do NOT like how Venom looks as big as the Hulk. This is why I wasn't 100% satisfied with the art in Paul Jenkin's "The Hunger" storyarc (by Ramos).

And hey, why didn't Marvel collect this in digest form? Haven't they done that with their other Tsunami titles? Ugh. Hell, they could collect all 18 issues of this series that way, and I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Oh well. At least Mark Millar is reinventing Venom in his Marvel Knights Spider-Man title. The new costume is pretty cool... I'm out

1 out of 5 stars Oh, Marvel...what have you done?.......2004-06-22

Venom. The very mention of that word has many different meanings for many different people. But for most of us Spider-man fans, Venom is synonymous with a nightmarish, sadistic monster that nearly ended Spider-man's webslinging career on more than one occasion. But that was the past...unfortunately Marvel's trend of inking and penning less-than-stellar story arcs for its classic characters has hit Venom harder than it ever has.

Many fans thought Venom was ruined when he became the 'Lethal Protector' and received a short run of several limited series...a few of which were quite good, but most of which were rather ridiculous. However, Venom: Shiver certainly takes the cake. The combination of writer Daniel Way and illustrator Francisco Herrera simply do Venom no justice whatsoever.

For starters, the art is horrific. It looks like something out of a cheap Saturday morning cartoon...Venom is apparently a shapeless, amorphous blob that ranges from being about the size of a man to the size of a small elephant. The characters are all blocky and disfigured, with little detail save for the exaggerated bumpy and misshapen faces. Oddly enough, the cover art for each individual part, all included in this TPB, was rather outstanding. Why such great work wasn't applied to the actual comic is beyond me.

As for the story...well, if you've ever seen John Carpenter's 'The Thing'(1982), then you basically don't need to read this comic. To say it was inspired by it would be understating it...to say it blatantly ripped it off would be much more accurate. Everything from the arctic setting, military base with a 'secret project', to the mysterious dog, to the mistrust among the people...everything just seems completely ripped from Carpenter's cult horror classic. And to top it all off, Venom is apparently being chased by the Men in Black...except this lone agent is a robot from another planet. And it now seems that the Venom symbiote must survive by leaping from host to host, draining the host of all of its body fluids and killing it to survive, but also mimicking the host to keep itself disguised(again, a blatant rip off of The Thing)...funny, but that sounds more like a parasite than a symbiote. I guess Eddie Brock's bond with the alien that we've known for the past 2 decades didn't count? Or maybe this just happened over night...who knows what they're trying to do.

Overall this is one of the worst Marvel stories I have read in years. The Clone nonsense with Spider-man turned me off to Marvel back in 1997, and if I wasn't such a fan of the Punisher, Captain America and The Ultimates(Avengers retelling), then this garbage would once again completely turn me off to Marvel Comics. Shame on you Marvel, for ruining another classic character from my era. Bloody, bloody shame!

I've picked up a lot of children's books about Monarch Butterflies but this is by far the best. The scientific facts are skillfully woven into the story. The words are almost poetic, and the color illustrations are lifelike and breathtaking. The children will learn what flowers Monarchs are attracted to, how they journey to Mexico, what happens when they get there, and how the circle of life continues as the Monarch's offspring makes its way back north.

3 out of 5 stars Venom gets a tad better..........2004-10-17

Well for one thing we've got better art in this collection - why couldn't Paco Medina draw the whole series??? - but we've also got some dumb characters in the form of Frankie and Vic, and guess what... they're CLONES! Yuck. Anyway, we do however get the overly exposed Wolverine, who actually provides some comic relief every now and again in the "RUN" arc. All in all, pretty good stuff, if you ignore the clones.

Herrara returns in "Patterns"... Pro: we finally see Eddie Brock again. Con: crappy art. It's pretty cool to see Venom square off against the Fantastic Four and the scene where Spider-Man expresses fear of the symbiote in its captive state. Besides that, though, we get all this conspiracy crap that Bruce Jones seems to love doing over on "Hulk".

All in all, not too bad. The best of this series can be found in the next collection, "Twist", which has some classic moments between Spidey and Venom.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to religion.......2001-09-25

Concisely covering the history, phenomenology, psychology and sociology of religion, this is the best single volume introduction to religion on the market. Religion can be made to seem boring and uninteresting -- and it most often is by its scholarly observers. Ellwood, however, truly has the knack of interesting presentation -- if you want a quick intro to a reasoned understanding of religion, this is the book to buy.
