5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone coping with Alzheimer's.......2003-11-09

I first became aware of this book when it was published on a smale scale for people that the authors and their colleagues encountered in their clinical work at an Alzheimer's center in New York City. I urged the authors to share this important book with a wider audeince and I am most pleased that they have done so with the publication of this paperback.

Health care for persons with Alzheimer's disease is a two-edged sword. If there is a coexisting medical condition, there is potential for great good or great harm at the hands of medical practitioners. The authors offer loads of advice about how to ensure that good is done and harm is avoided. This is a guide book that should be read once and then kept close at hand, in case of an acute illness or some other unforseen condition that requires medical attention. Mary Mitteman and Cynthia Epstein are to be commended for helping individuals and families navigate their way through the increasing complex health care maze.

    5 out of 5 stars Who? You!.......2005-09-21

All Doctor Who readers should check this book out. Other reviews complain about the confusing time travel in this book. Guess what? Doctor Who travels in TIME! Get used to it. This book dealt with it in a confusing way, but by the end I understood what was going on. Well written, this book was less about the villian (forgettable) as how people around the doctor are affected by the adventures he has. I feel like the charecter of Michael should have been more fleshed out, as well as other minors in the book. Perhaps some Who novels need to be longer. This one was rushed at the end. This easily could have been a 500 page novel. A great Who novel, and a good book in general.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, but a little clumsy.......2004-07-11

The BBC Doctor Who book series can be a bit of a lucky dip. While the series as a whole often achieves a high literary standard, it also seems to function as a proving ground for rookie sci-fi writers, to whom there is great value in a captive fanboy audience.

That isn't to say that the series cheapens itself by this practice, nor that Mark Michalowski is not talented as a writer. Michalowski is obviously genuine in his involvement with Doctor Who, and has the skill to pull it off. There are some very well handled ideas in the book. I especially liked the idea of the UNIT soldiers' resentment towards the Doctor - that was particularly well executed as part of the seventh Doctor's characterisation.

Where the book ultimately fails is in assuring the reader that he or she is in sufficiently capable hands to gain the trust that is required in the last third or so of the book. As part of the plot, the narrative suddenly becomes somewhat paradoxical. My experience was of turning back pages, wondering if I had missed a vital point, or if the chapters were numbered out of order. I hadn't and they weren't, but I simply wasn't happy to take that on faith and read on, so I had an uncomfortable few chapters until I saw what the author was getting at.

Quibbles aside, "Relative Dementias" is a good read, with a well characterised Doctor, and it was good to see Ace behaving in a more believable fashion. I was never at all convinced by the TV scripts she was given, with embarrassing "Street talk" and a "tough-girl" cliche that succumbed much too often to the usual Who Girl screaming and running. Three stars, maybe three and a half.

4 out of 5 stars The Missing New Adventure.......2003-11-13

Now that the Past Doctor Adventures no longer feature that little back cover blurb telling you in between which televised "Doctor Who" stories the book took place, it's fun to play that game at home. "Relative Dementias", a rookie effort by Mark Michalowski, is almost definitely set during the TV show's 26th and final season -- witness a reference to that season's premiere, "Battlefield", and the Doctor wearing the dark-brown coat he sported only in that season. Ace fails to recognize alien technology she'll later meet in a novel set during the putative "Season 27" (the linked PDAs written by Mike Tucker and Robert Perry). So, most likely, "Relative Dementias" takes place before the New Adventures happened.

However, this book IS a New Adventure. In tone and texture and content, it's as close as we've seen to an NA since that series lost its "Doctor Who" license early in 1997.

And yes, by being an NA, "Relative Dementias" is far better than many of the PDAs (or EDAs) that came before it.

Although the majority of the book is set in Scotland in 1982 (a year characterized solely by references to the Falkland Islands... with one "Star Wars" in-joke that could also have worked in 2002), there's an intro sequence and a coda set in the London of 2012. Overlaying the book is a moderately nifty time paradox involving this other time zone.

"Relative Dementias" also touches on deeply personal issues, apart from the science fiction. The novel's early thrust is Alzheimer's Disease -- much of the book takes place in a home for Alzheimer's patients. Another character is revealed, late in the book, to have a rare genetic disorder. The book's "main" character, a UNIT scientist named Joyce Brunner (like the NAs, this book partly shifts focus off the Doctor in favor of an original character), is introduced as an old friend having family issues of her own -- involving not just her aging mother, but also her rebellious son -- a UNIT cadet.

So, here's a book that begins nicely, and ends nicely. In between, there's the author's-first-novel sin of.. well, just too much running around. A chase around the Alzheimer's home, a dash through the woods, a detour to a deserted island (seemingly inexplicable until you get to the end), and, hey!, since this is "Doctor Who", a fight in a seemingly abandoned church.

The other sin is the conflict. Joyce's son is mad at the Doctor; Ace gets mad at the Doctor. You get the picture. I'm not sure why, though. The Doctor's final gambit is rather clever (and laugh-out-loud funny). Ace's negative reaction, however, sours the book, and I'm not quite sure I sympathize with her. Then again, gratuitous Ace angst was par for the course in the NAs, so you'd expect to find the problem here too. Even though there's a happy ending, and a party over the last 15 pages (a technique well pioneered in the NAs by Paul Cornell), there's a foreboding cliffhanger, of sorts, involving a frightening new memory plaguing the Doctor.

On the whole, if you want to remember what compelling "Doctor Who" fiction used to look like, "Relative Dementias" (while certainly not on the level of "Festival of Death") is a good place to start. It's also the best 7th Doctor PDA I've read to this point.

    4 out of 5 stars Scottish Who.......2002-06-18

Relative Dementias is a Past Doctor novel starring the 7th Doctor and Ace

Mark Michalowski has written a very good first book that's marred only by trying to pack too much into the story and some dodgy character motivations. All in all, though, it's a very interesting story.

The Seventh Doctor and Ace stop in 2012 to pick up the Doctor's mail. There are a couple of interesting pieces, though, and it sends them back in time to Scotland in 1982 to help an old friend. Unfortunately, that old friend is missing, and the search leads to Greystairs, an Alzheimer's clinic. There, some of the patients seem to be responding very well to treatments to restore their memories. However, some memories can be dangerous, not only to the patients, but to others.

In the course of the story, many questions are asked. Why is the Doctor being so secretive about his actions before they arrive in Scotland? What are the strange disappearances that have taken place locally? Who is stalking them as they explore the area? Just what is Michael's secret, and why won't he talk to Ace? What does he have against the Doctor?

The book comes complete with weird time-travel activities, a manipulative Seventh Doctor (which is his usual characterization, for those who don't follow the series) and Ace, who is a tough young woman, slightly out of her element, but determined to do the best she can in the situation. I've always found this team to be an interesting one, even more so in the books than in the TV series. Ace doesn't quite fit the typical "companion" role in the Doctor Who series: she's often more of a partner than most of them are. She doesn't scream, for instance. She's a "take-action" kind of girl. She's well-served in this book, taking on a large portion of the action. It's a good thing that Michalowski writes her so well.

The other characters aren't served quite as well, though. The minor characters are fairly forgettable, especially the patients at the clinic. I found it hard to tell them apart sometimes, and when the ultimate revelation about what's going on happens, I still couldn't tell the difference. Claire, the barmaid, is a little better, but she's also fairly one-note. There's an attraction between her and Michael, but it's only mentioned in passing and nothing is ever made of it.

In fact, that sort of thing is one of the problems with the book. Too much is mentioned and then never developed. There's a murder at Greystairs that the Doctor discovers, but it's never mentioned again. Sure, the murderer gets his/her comeuppance, but only because of what happens in the plot. It has nothing to do with bringing the murderer to justice. It just sort of hangs there and is never mentioned again.

Then there's a conflict between Ace and the Doctor that grows out of nowhere. The reason for it, though stated at the time the problem happens, has no preamble whatsoever and I was actually surprised that all of a sudden, these two characters are fighting. Why? Supposedly, the Doctor has broken a promise that we've never seen him make, so it comes completely out of left field.

The final thing I want to address about character is Michael, and his motivation. He goes through most of the book hiding his real reason for being in the area, and hiding why he's so antagonistic toward the Doctor. When he ultimately reveals it, I was left with a skeptical feeling. I just didn't believe it. I won't reveal what the problem is here, but I will say that I can see no way that events would happen as he says they did. It's just not logical. People don't act the way he describes them. To me, it brought his whole characterization to a crashing halt.

The story itself is fascinating, though. There are a lot of twists and turns, and the ending is a mad dash to the finish line with a wonderfully Doctorish solution to the problem. The only problem is that it's a little too packed. While the book plods a little bit in the middle, the end is so full that the reader doesn't have time to take a breath. There's revelation after revelation hitting the reader in the face. The author has said that he cut a huge amount from his manuscript to fit the required word count, and it shows. The time travel antics were interesting (I won't say who's involved in them, because the revelation of that is actually part of the fun of the book) and I didn't find them confusing at all.

This past Doctor adventure is definitely worth picking up, especially if you're a fan of the Seventh Doctor/Ace partnership. With the exception of the conflict at the end, they are characterized beautifully. It's also a good book to introduce a non-Who fan to. It's well-written, and most of all it's fun.

3 out of 5 stars Good Ideas, Poor Execution.......2002-05-09

I approach all Dr. Who novels as entertaining but not meaningful reads - I read a great deal of literature and consider these a guilty pleasure. For the most part they're well written and provide some genuine fun for Who fans. Relative Dementias is no exception, finding the 7th Doctor and Ace in yet another precarious position. Unfortunately the author bravely tries to pull off some time-travel surprises but only succeeds in making the last third of the book choppy and confusing. It was a good idea but the execution wasn't great. And if I see the Doctor described as "diminutive" again, I'm going to scream. This must be some directive from the BBC as Relative Dementias is not the only book to describe the character this way.

All-in-all, decent story with ideas that exceeded the author's abilities or effort.

5 out of 5 stars "I chose this as one of the 3 best when I had to teach Revelation!".......2005-12-11

When I was asked to teach Revelation, I was given the choice of any commentaries I wanted to study in preparation. I knew my audience would include teens, mature adults, and new believers. After much research, I decided on 3--each, the best at it's particular audience.

For young people (teens) and new believers, I used "Dragons, Grasshoppers, & Frogs!". It gave me the practical, reflective questions to include in daily life. I especially liked the Love Letter from Jesus based on the hidden messages from Christ in the book.

For my mature audiences, I used a serious work entitled "Revelation" by John MacArthur. This gave me technical background.

But for general excellence, this book was everything I could have hoped for! Mr. Duck writes in a simple, humerus manner. He never loses touch with either the reader or the bible-centered interpretation of Revelation. He also includes some reflective questions (though not nearly as good as 'Dragons'), and provided the best bibliography of them all.

I would highly recommend this book unless you deny the premillennial, pretribulational viewpoint.

This isn't Mark's best work but it comes close. The read was a bit choppy but still it's one of the better outlines.

5 out of 5 stars Biblically Inept is by far the best study books written.......2003-01-14

The Biblically Inept books are a fine complement to your bible. I am so impressed with the Revelation and Life of Christ Biblically-Inept books that I intend to collect all of the Biblically-Inept books. I was so shaken about the Revelation book in the past it was one of my most hated books in the bible. When I got the Revelation Biblically-Inept book it had really open my eyes to things and that there was nothing scary or mind boggling about Revelation. After I got through reading the Revelation Biblically Inept book. I feel even more content, joyful about gods plan, and completely understand the book of revelation where it doesn't scare the day lights out of me, instead I rejoice in gods plans. Biblically-Inept are wonderful complementary study guides to your bible.

5 out of 5 stars "Makes Revelation not only easy--but actually fun to study!".......2002-07-06

***This review would include the DANIEL work by the same author**

Revelation is, without a doubt, one of my sixty-six favorite Bible books to study! I've probably studied (and taught) this book more than any other, and there are very few Revelation commentaries I haven't used. This commentary though, is unique.

The author is dispensational, millennial, and pre-tribulational in his approach. Let's get that straight right now! If you're not, you might not fully 'appreciate' this work.

He cites many of finest authors on Revelation, and does not consider his work alone as the final authority. But unlike other commentaries, Duck includes a broad array of contemporary 'radio' type personalities such as J. Vernon McGee, Noah Hutchings, Jack Van Impe, and even a few Pentecostal experts as well.

This book is the easiest to read of any Revelation book I've ever studied, and includes very helpful references to the Old Testament. This author understands that the key to Revelation is in the Old Testament, and NOT in wild, personal speculation! Kudos, to you Dr. Duck!

If there is a weakness in this series, it might be the 'handwritten' timelines in the Appendix. They seem just a tad inferior in quality to the finely formated balance of the rest of the book.

One can get a wonderful and adequate grasp of Revelation using this book alone. However, the real meat of study here is in finding which of the many authors cited appeal to you most, and then checking out their full work on Revelation. This book serves up a sampling of the best in the field. Best of all, it seems to be readily available, and inexpensive 'used' on the Internet.

Revelation was written to be studied, as it tells us in its opening verses. Yet, Revelation comes last in Scripture; God assumes we've grasped the fist sixty-five books FIRST!

Dr. Duck's guide for the 'inept' will provide a great deal of help for those who only know Psalms, a few Proverbs, and '...the words of Jesus in red'! If you're not new to Revelation, this book is somewhat limited, but not a waste. Something always seems to pop up that you really hadn't thought of!

I look forward to the rest in this series. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

            5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2000-09-09

When I first saw this book on the shelf I laughed! Another 'idiot' type book was my first thought. Then I picked it up and flipped through it - ok, so it had some good diagrams etc. I decided why not - I have heard/read what different experts have said in their books and quite frankly for the average person their explanations were more confusing than the original book of Daniel. This book compiles all the experts views of prophesy with little insets of exact quotes, shows clearly any disagreements by bible scholars on interpretations and includes all the fasinating historical material related to this time in history. Easy to read! Easy to understand! And if you want to study more in depth it has given you dozen of resources to consider. You may not want to though -- it is all here, you can set it down and actually picture it and feel it.

            5 out of 5 stars Astonishing!.......1998-10-29

I can't believe how well the Bibically-Inept books are done. As a 20 year old formerly agnostic man, these books have affected my life in a way I would never have expected. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the next installment, the Bible for the Bibically-Inept. I only hope that Larry Richards can maintain Mr. Duck's outstanding pace. Once again, the design of this book is amazing. What a peice of work!

This book series is so easy to read and the excellent design uses reference icons to help the reader navigate the thorough material.

I can hardly wait for the next book in the series! Great writing, terrific design, learning the Bible is fun again!

5 out of 5 stars I loved this study guide on ALL the women of the Bible........2003-05-28

I never realized just how many women there are in the Bible until I bought this book and read it. Every woman and I mean EVERY woman mentioned in the Bible is in this book. I learned soooooo much and learned of women that I had never heard of before this book. The Biblicaly inept series are great, this is the second one I have done and I love them! I take my to work to study before my shift begans and I don't have to carry my Bible because the scripture is listed before every study paragraph. Every verse is explained in easy to understand language and to see how much you have learned at the end of each chapter are a few study questions. Each chapter has a section at the end of the highlights of each chapter. Difficult words are defined and explained. Excellent bible study. This book is for both the beginner and the advanced believer.

4 out of 5 stars Women of the Bible.......2002-01-27

This book is a quick, easy read, review of the women of the Bible. As well as being informative it is also very inspirational. Miller had an interesting way of including in the margins, Bible references, word meanings, and icons to perk interest. The author's rendition of Bible text at times was a burdensome repeat of material.

When you lack a framework it's very difficult to understand anything. The interesting decorations of a home would mean nothing if there were no framework to attatch them too! This is what this book has done for me, given me a framework to attach these stories too. Many of the stories in the bible come to life when you know and understand what happened before and after and how the people who had the experiences might have thought. It really has brought to life the power of God for me and his complete plan from the beginning of the Bible to the end! I would recommend this to any level of Christian. I have been a Christian for 15 years and this has been an excellent tool for both learning and better equiping me to witness.

Cute icons, study questions, direct verse references, and opinions from the top Bible experts in the world all add together to equal one of the greatest Biblical-study and reference texts ever. No other book that I have seen can match The Bible: God's Word for the Biblically-Inept for it's insight on confusing areas of the Bible and its easy-to understand language and design. This book has been a marvelous addition to my Bible-study group. We just can't wait to get started on Revelation and Daniel.

5 out of 5 stars "A treasure chest of knowledge and wit".......2003-12-10

I am a youth pastor at a Calvary Chapel and I want to teach the students about the Kingdom of God. So I pulled out the book of Mark and I am teaching through the entire book as every good Calvary Chapel pastor would. I have a few commentaries and I used them to do the introduction. I then looked into my book collection to see what else I could find that would be helpful - I found your book I got a while back. I pulled out a treasure chest of knowledge and wit in your book.

As I prepare for the next section, it is now unnecessary to open all of the other commentaries I have, so it has come down to using yours, which uses a plethora of resources to bring the Word of God alive. The humor in your writing style perfectly fits my teaching style and it is a joy to "listen" to you speak these words to me as I read them. Thanks Scott!

                5 out of 5 stars Sharp!.......2002-11-27

Despite its rather silly title, I've never had so much fun reading a commentary! I can't vouch for any of the other titles in this series (in fact, the others I've seen were pretty awful), but this one rises from the clichéd ashes of populist Bible books and delivers. Pinzon presents complex concepts with a witty one-two punch that makes his writing as enjoyable to read as a novel. Not only a good introduction to the Bible, but a refreshing review for those of us whose Bibles have gathered a little dust. I've been reading it to my kids on the long drive to church. Even when I think they're sleeping, they always wake up to answer the questions at the end of the chapter. (This book'll get to you, even comatose.) Lively and informative.

5 out of 5 stars You must read this book.......2002-11-22

This book is absolutely awesome and will open your eyes to the Gospel and Book of Mark like nothing you've read. Our Bible Study group all decided to take one chapter each out of the book, review it and present a study to the group. The comments from each presenter was the same........ IT WAS WONDERFUL !

I encourage every Bible teacher, student, lay person and Pastor to read this book. It is full of insight, humor and teachings that will bless you beyond belief. You must read this book !

                5 out of 5 stars A Fresh , User Friendly Commentary.......2002-03-08

I went to theological seminary 25 years ago. One of the reasons I went to seminary was to learn how to use the tools for studying the Bible. I took Greek and Hebrew and read lots of books with dense type. It wasn't easy for me but I am glad I spent the three years it took to acquire the tools.

However, I recognize that most Christians, even if they were so inclinded, can afford neither the time nor the expense of Seminary. But they are interested in studying and knowing more about the Bible. This book on the Gospel of Mark will be helpful to such people. Persons who have never owned a commentary on an individual book of the Bible will find a wealth of information about the history, language and culture of the New Testament that will enable them to better understand the teachings of Jesus.

The combination of good biblical scholarship along with the helpful tools, outstanding quotes and fresh, humorous writing makes this book very readable and accessible as a Bible Study resource.

                5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2001-11-24

I have been a pastor for over 18 years now and have had to wade through many a commentary. I can tell you that this one won't bog you down! It's clear and concise, yet deep, thoughtful and practical. If you have read any of Scott's other books you know he is a gifted writer. But now you can discover his greatest gift, teaching God's Word! You can tell that Scott Pinzon has really done his homework as explores the Gospel text. And in his "what others say" sections he tells you what many of the greatest Pastors and commentators have said about various passages. If your looking for a commentary that gets to the point yet stimulates your thinking, this is it. Where was this book when I was a youth pastor!?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Book!.......2003-12-22

I didn't quite know what to expect when I ordered this book. But I am very glad that I did. It is an excellent study book. Very enriching and well-thought out. I recommend it for anyone who is planning to do a study on John with a group or for personal study. It is exactly what it claims to be, user friendly and full of clear teaching. There are many good quotes from biblical scholars (Leon Morris, Craig Keener, D. A. Carson, et. al) that introduce the reader to deeper insight of the passages. The best thing about this book is that it leaves no passage aside, and covers every part of the Gospel. The helps are good, especially if you are introducing the material to new, or young Christians, even those who are "church-ed" will get some new insight in this study. Also the study questions and chapter wrap up are benefical to reminding readers what was covered in that chapter. I hope all the biblical books in this series are as well written as this one.
