Book Description

Telzey Amberdon was only in her teens when she discovered that she was a telepath. Not only a telepath, but a xenotelepath, able to communicate mentally not just with humans, but with alien intelligences. And she turned out to be one of the most powerful telepaths in the history of the galactic civilization called the Hub.

First she had to deal with an alien race that humans hadn't realized were intelligent, and who were about to eliminate those troublesome humans who thought they were colonizing an uninhabited world. Then, she had to fend off the secret psi agents of the Psychological Corps who took a dim view of any telepath, let alone one with Telzey's powers, operating outside of their control. Next, she stumbled across a telepathic serial killer, who used an unstoppable predator, under his mental control, to hunt and kill his victims -- and Telzey was to be the catch of the day.

It was fortunate for the human race that she survived, since she next found herself in the middle of a secret war between two hidden races of genetically engineered humans. They called it the "Lion Game," and they made the mistake of thinking that in this clash of predators, Telzey was just a harmless kitten. But when the dust settled, Telzey would be the only one purring....

5 out of 5 stars A nostalgic trip to the future that still inspires me!.......2005-06-19

As a female who has appreciated SF/F since the age of twelve, I have been in a very small minority for most of my life. Along came validation in the form of Telzey Amberdon, the Nancy Drew of Science Fiction for her day, and suddenly I felt that I had a place in our speculative future.

Telzey is cool. Telzey is brilliant, beautiful, and a very independent-minded fifteen-year-old; and apparently, also a powerful latent psi (psychic). She's the genius daughter of some powerful politicians several hundred years into the future when humanity had expanded into the stars and founded homes on countless planets in a system called the Hub. Somehow our intrepid heroine ends up getting pulled into several mysteries and thrillers during the course of this book, and of course she handles herself with wit and self-confidence against the universe's fiends, human and non-. But the worst threat to this budding psi is the ever-watchful Psychology Service, which has its own agenda for her powerful talents even as it purports to protect and serve all the citizens of the Hub. Telzey has to learn a lot of psychic self-defense on the fly against her own in addition to everything else on her plate.

This is a collection of the short novellas that Schmidt wrote at various points in his career for magazines, and as such they had to be combined to make a novel hefty enough for publishing by today's standards. I rather enjoyed this format, as Telzey's character can be explored in chunks of chronological development rather than skimmed as one would through the plot of a larger novel. It works well on the level of light entertainment and gave me more natural reading breaks than the standard Chapter format.

I was also appreciative of the slightly retro flavor of stories that were written mostly during the `60s and `70s. Now and then an anachronism caught me off guard, such as a reference to a rotary dial-up communication system. But in many ways Schmidt was so ahead of his time, with the subtly feminist flavor of his themes and main characters, that I can gloss over those tiny lapses without skipping a beat. Mostly, I just have fun exploring this speculative future through Telzey.

Gosh I enjoyed getting back into the Hub universe; now I want more. Happily there are more Telzey stories out there, and soon I will be reacquainting myself with all of them and some others I had never met. It's good to live in the age of Internet bookstores!

5 out of 5 stars Telzey returns, FINALLY!!.......2003-08-25

I first read the Telzey Amberdon stories back when Ace Books reissued them in the early 1980's. Unfortunately, I lost my copies over the course of several moves, and for a long time was not able to find replacements. Well, thank goodness Baen (which is gaining a good reputation for reissuing old classic SF authors) has stepped in, with the first volume of its compendium of the works of James H. Schmitz. Telzey Amberdon is back, and the stories are just as good as I remember them.

For those who are unfamiliar, Telzey is a rather precocious 15-year old girl who, over the course of several stories, discovers that she is also a rather powerful telepath. And not just any telepath, but one who can read the minds of non-humans as well as humans. This brings her into contact with a number of alien races, and hence forms the gist to some very good adventure writing.

In "Novice", Telzey's abilities are triggered by a race of psionic cats who no one knows are intelligent; in "Undercurrents", Telzey uses her new-found abilities to try to thwart both the Psychological Corp and some unsavory people who are trying to kill her best friend; "Poltergeist" offers an unusual turn on an old ghost story idea; and the "Goblin Night", "Sleep No More", and "The Lion Game" sequence (probably the most well known of the Telzey Amberdon stories) puts Telzey in the middle of a power struggle between multiple alien factions. This collection also contains two other Schmitz stories, "The Blood of Nalakiaï" and "The Star Hyacinths", neither of which contain Telzey but do provide background for many the stories in the series (Schmitz, after all, set nearly all of his novels and short stories in the same universe).

All together, this is a very good collection of short stories from an author who is unfortunately not as well known today as he should be. Perhaps this and the subsequent volumes in Baens series will rectify that matter; one can hope. In the mean time, pick this book up and read; you wont be disappointed. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Almost forgotten, still important........2002-05-28

James Schmitz is perhaps the classic SF author who is simultaneously most important and least remembered by the average modern fan. Schmitz began his writing in 1943, when many of the other greats were just starting out. Clearly influenced by Doc Smith in some areas (his "Agent of Vega" series even has some definitely Smithian prose), Schmitz was best known for the fact that he wrote stories featuring strong, believeable, effective female lead characters, in an era when many SF stories -- even those by the greats such as Heinlein and Asimov -- rarely even acknowledged the existence of women except by an occasional reference to a character's mother or a token girlfriend. Schmitz' characters, by contrast, lived in a world populated equally by men and women, and had no trouble interacting with either sex (any more than they do in the real world, at any rate).

In the Telzey Amberdon stories, we get to see all three of the things Schmitz became known for: strong female characters, an interesting and consistent use of psionic powers, and solid universe design. Telzey's adventures take place in the Hub, perhaps Schmitz' best known setting and certainly his most detailed. Often the Telzey stories are criticized for making her a superwoman, but I think this is often a reaction without consideration. She is no more superior to her opposition than many a male hero, and as a general rule is much more in need of subtlety and caution than male heroes common in the SF of the time. Not to say you couldn't call her a superwoman -- she's certainly got enough talent, power, and so on to qualify -- but her opposition is always formidable enough to REQUIRE a superwoman to defeat.

These stories have been somewhat edited from their original form; for the most part the editing involved minor terms, removal of redundant punctuation (which Schmitz himself tended to do upon re-issues), and so on. A few have had noticeable changes. Personally I do not agree with a few of them, but the resulting stories are still clearly Schmitz' work, and the overall volume is more than merely worth the money; this is an excellent collection, and all the ones in the Schmitz re-issue series are must-haves for any SF fan.

James Schmitz wrote well-crafted stories with strong characters. The background settings are intriguing and the stories have unusual plot twists. These volumes maintain their freshness and appeal, even after more than a quarter of a century. If you haven't met Telzey and Trigger or explored the Federation of the Hub, you will enjoy discovering this new world. (Even if you have read Schmitz' work before, it's well worth the re-visit.)

5 out of 5 stars A great FEMALE protagonist from an early MALE author.......2001-12-22

Snap up this book even if you haven't met Telzey before: if you have, you'll want the new material in this edition. Eric Flint does not disappoint fans of Schmitz in this first of 4 volumes of tales of the Hub. Some PSI, plenty of action, but most of all,
FUN! Definitely worth reading many times.

A must for any Telzey Amberdon fan. Omits many of the better stories, but does have a good background. The human villains are fun (and creepy) although you may have to look elsewhere for sme of the best Telzey stories, such as Goblin Night, and Resident Witch. Still, this one is fun.

4 out of 5 stars A fun adventure fantasy about a female telepath.......2000-04-28

James Schmitz wrote a bunch of loosely connected stories (mostly short stories), and this is the first one about Telzey Amberdon -- his favorite telepathic character. My detailed rating for this book would be 4.0. This book has been combined with another, to create the currently published "Telzey Amberdon." The story is mostly an adventure story. That is, the EVENTS that happen in the book are the most interesting part of the story. The characters, scenery, universe, history, etc. are not described in any real detail. By the end of the book, you still don't "know" Telzey. But she is a telepath, and there seem to be many interesting things you can do with telepathy! And you get into some sticky fixes too. Schmitz did an admirable job creating a very strong female character, for people who care about such things. And her adventures are fun to read -- but none of the characters in the book are greatly likeable, and that makes it all come out a little flat. I think the book gets a little dull to reread many times -- it loses a little sparkle each time through.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the forever young.......1999-09-18

I should have guessed from the cover picture that The Universe.. was a book for adolescents. I started reading a couple of chapters then gave up. Then one rainy day, I decided to pick the slimmest volume on the shelf and promised myself to read the book to the end. The Universe got picked, and guess what? I not only managed to finish it but I enjoyed it. I guess we all have a child somewhere inside us waiting for an opportunity to get out and enjoy his/herself.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, loved this one!.......1999-01-22

I really loved this book. A real pity it is out of print as I would love to get a copy for my library. Would like to see some more books written about the marvelous Telzey!

Telzey Amberdon is a character I loved. She is telepathic and often in trouble just because of that fact. Schmitz 's books are a "must read" for any serious science fiction - fantasy reader.

              Book Description

Seven Theories of Religion introduces a sequence of "classic" attempts to explain religion scientifically, presenting each in brief outline and in non-technical language. It considers first the views of E.B. Tylor and James Frazer, two Victorian pioneers in anthropology and the comparative study of religion. It explores the controversial "reductionist" approaches of Freud, Marx, and Emile Durkheim, then explains the program of their most outspoken opponent, the Romanian-American scholar Mircea Eliade. Further on, it examines certain newer methods and ideas advanced by the English ethnographer E.E. Evans-Pritchard and by the American Clifford Geertz, two of the present century's most celebrated names in fieldwork anthropology. Each chapter offers biographical background, exposition of the theory, comparative analysis, and critical assessment. Easily accessible to students in introductory religion courses, Seven Theories of Religion is an enlightening treatment of this controversial and fascinating subject.

              5 out of 5 stars way underrated.......2006-04-21

Before reading further, please note that a new edition of this book, with expanded coverage of Max Weber, is out: "Eight Theories of Religion." I'm sure that my praise below applies to that book as well; however, you certainly want to get that one rather than this one!

This is the best book I've read so far on the history of theories of religion. It's definitely the best introduction to the basic theories, kinds of theories, and theorists that I'm aware of. (The one book that might compare is Sharpe's history of comparative religion: I haven't read it and you might check it out in addition to this one.)

Actually, I don't think this could be done much better, aside from including more theorists. Pals covers each theorist in adequate depth; he's fair and charitable, yet he presents the common criticisms of the theories with equal fairness.

Besides that, the "Further Reading" sections and notes are very helpful to enthusiastic students. The binding is tough. The index isn't as helpful as it could be: the footnotes and further readings are not included. But relative to the quality of the book as a whole, that's a minor point.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the academic study of religion; and very strongly to students majoring in religion.

After this book, I suggest looking at Kippenberg's "Discovering Religious History in the Modern Age," which is excellent, and of course at Sharpe's book I mentioned earlier.

3 out of 5 stars Theory of Religion.......2004-04-19

Aptly titled "Seven Theories", the book's format summarizes a brief history, theories, and critique of seven influential thinkers who have made a contribution to the study of religion. However, the title would have been better had it been the Seven Theories of Religion but Only Three Really Good Ones.

He introduces early methodologies of Tylor and Frazer, dispatches Freud by treating his work as a pseudo-scientosophy, criticizes Durkheim with groundless accusatory assertions reinforced with seemingly objective sources that are actually written by Pals himself, then finishes off the functionalists by discrediting Marx.

His critiques of the remaining three thinkers is a bit more like situation at a job interview where he attempts to subtly indicate 'strengths' in weaknesses. He start with Eliade in a fairly candid manner, justifies some critiques made of Eliade by using sources from Pritchards, and then caps off his methodology with nothing but adulation for the modern saint Clifford Geertz.

Although his summary of each theorist is comprehensive and his critiques justified, his agenda of promoting his approach forces these seven different theories to become just one.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-01-06

This is a very good, even-handed look at some of the great thinkers of the last 150 years, and what they thought about the phenomenon of religion, whether Judaism, Christianity, Taoism, polytheism, etc..

These thinkers can be categorized as either "reductionist" or "non-reductionist." Tyler, Frazer, Freud, Marx, and Durkheim are reductionist. To Tyler and Frazer, religion can be reduced to "irrationality" or the "primitive mentality." Freud reduces religion to "neurosis." For Marx, religion is the "opium of the masses" and nothing more than a symptom of the "class struggle." Durkheim reduces religion to "the social"; that is, religion is society, society is religion.

Eliade is non-reductionist. He thinks religion cannot be reduced to psychology, sociology, economics, theology or anything else, but has to be seen as something unique in its own right. Eliade studies myths and other phenomenon of religion, compares them, tries to find universal similarities.

Evans-Pritchard and Geertz are also non-reductionist. But they don't try and "theorize" like Frazer or Eliade; they don't try to find the "origin" of religion. They are content to do in depth studies of particular culures.

The History of Religion, anthropology, ethnology--these are all fuzzy sciences. The debate over what religion is, how it came to be in various cultures, whether or not it is needed or unneeded, whether or not it is rational or irrational or just a product of the "prelogical" mind--all this still rages on amongst anthropologists, ethnologist, pyschologists, sociologists, and historians of religion. The reductionists vs. the non-reductionists. Who will win?

Overall, a good and fair-balanced read.

5 out of 5 stars a great explanation of religion from several disciplines.......2003-11-23

This was used as the primary textbook for my senior seminar as a religion major in college. Pals provides a great introduction to the major theories of religion, which we then used to help us understand the primary writings of Freud, Eliade, Marx, Durkheim, Geertz and others. In the years since taking the class, this is one of the few books that I have recommended to a number of friends along the way who have been interested in learning more about religion from a philosophical/academic standpoint.

4 out of 5 stars A good summary of religious thought........2001-09-12

This book was definitely a good summary of the thoughts of eight main historical figures (with a few others thrown in here and there). However, in many cases, the summaries were not so much about religion, but rather mythologies that sometimes masquerade as religion, at least in some people's opinions. For example, the ideas of Mircea Eliade, to me, are simply mythologies and barely constitute the basis of a veritable religion (and are pretty boring reading, to boot). And Karl Marx's ideas are so stepped in the socioeconomic realm that one cannot really call his work a "theory" of religion. On the other hand, the interesting work of Freud and Durkheim are specifically related to the subject of religion and are good additions to the book.

Thus, for me, this book is sort of a smattering of material that is worthwhile and entertaining reading - but may not be living up to the title of the book. As just one example, there is actually no discussion of the major thinkers who have put forward cognitive and biological hypotheses (for they are not "theories") of religion. (The section on Freud does not really count towards this because his work was not so much cognitive, as psychoanalytic.) Thus, for me, this book did not really discuss theories of religion, per se, but theories of various aspects of what some might call religion and others might call folklore, legend, or mythology.

This is a worthwhile book because you get a condensed view of the thoughts of many notable thinkers from wide ranges of disciplines (such as anthropology, sociology, etc.) but keep in mind that these are not "theories" of religion. They are, if anything, hypotheses and they are, if nothing else, only about relative aspects of various belief systems. If you are more concerned about the origins of religion (and thus a true "theory") I recommend a book like Pascal Boyer's "Religion Explained" or the books by Michael Shermer, such as "How We Believe."

Another problem I had with the book were the footnotes. Sometimes they contained just references and other times they contained material worth reading. In all cases, the "material worth reading" was short enough that it should have been placed in the main text. The constant shifting back and forth in this book made it a slower (and less entertaining) read for me than it probably otherwise would have been.

Overall, however, I think this was a well-researched book and contains a lot of good material. It just did not really cover the aspects of religion that I was hoping for.

                  Book Description

Raised by an activist mother, Kim Chernin was taught that the politics of religion are just that: politics. As her beliefs evolved, she came to understand the necessity of embracing her Jewish heritage while questioning the notion of taking on Jewishness as a role, religion, and qualifying trait, particularly with respect to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. The essays in Seven Pillars of Jewish Denial set forth a justifiable criticism of Israel. Chernin explores memory, survivor's guilt, and denial as debilitating to Jewish consciousness, which cannot see criticism of Israel as morally feasible in an anti-Semitic world. In her view, creating true peace requires understanding and believing that the lives of other human beings matter more than Jewish ideology.

                  Book Description

Gnosticism, together with alchemy, was for C. G. Jung the chief prefiguration of his analytical psychology. Jung did not simply interpret Gnostic texts psychologically but also cited them as confirmation of his psychology. An authority on theories of myth and Gnosticism, Robert Segal has searched the Jungian corpus to bring together in one volume Jung's main discussions of this ancient form of spirituality. Included in this volume are both Jung's sole work devoted entirely to Gnosticism, "Gnostic Symbols of the Self," and his own Gnostic myth, "Seven Sermons to the Dead." The book also contains key essays by two of the best-known writers on Jungian psychology and Gnosticism: Father Victor White and Gilles Quispel, whose "C. G. Jung und die Gnosis" is here translated for the first time. In his extensive introduction Segal discusses Jung's fascination with Gnosticism, the parallel for Jung between ancient Gnostics and modern Jungian patients, the Jungian meaning of Gnostic myths and of the Seven Sermons, Jung's possible misinterpretation of Gnosticism, and the common characterization of Jung himself as a contemporary Gnostic.

3 out of 5 stars The predecessor to "Allure of Gnosticism: ...".......2007-07-13

This book must be the predecessor to the book "Allure of Gnosticism: ..." since the introduction is partially the same in both. And there's also one same article in both the books. Jung's Seven Sermons to the Dead is included only in this one. But if I had to choose between the two, I'd rather get the newer.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Definitive Work.......2005-02-21

For anyone wanting to know Carl Jung's views on Gnosticism, this is the definitive work. Segal does an excellent job of describing Carl Jung's view of Gnosticism and the contrast with Jung's psychology. The explanation is very detailed, yet very clear and easy to understand.

Jung's Seven Sermons to the Dead are included, along with excerpts from Jung's other relevant works. This book is an excellent investment for this interested in both Gnosticism and psychology.

Judaism--the beginning, the foundation, the model of patriarchy. In a religion where a woman is traditionally not even counted as a member of the congregation, where and how can a modern woman find her place? Seven prominent Jewish women--two writers, three professors and (yes) a rabbi--step up to answer this question and claim a rightful place in the Hebrew tradition. Based on a film of the same name, the book incorporates monologues and discussions that reverberate with a palpable intensity. Through a process of "evolution not revolution," these women not only refuse to be denied the beauty and depth of their religious heritage but breathe new life into it through their passionate efforts.

I teach Greek in a private school and I have found this chart to be one of the best resources for the Greek Verb System. My students have no problem using this chart to learn the Greek Verb. I am constantly referring to it to help me stay on track! It is well worth purchasing. I hope it is reprinted.

This is the one-sheet conjugation table for the New Testament Greek. The dimension of the chart is app. 16.7x11.7(square inches). The omega and the mi conjugations are shown. In this chart, even many forms are given which do not occur in the New Testament for the sake of completeness. Clear at a glance and very helpful. Put it on your desk-top.

This is the one of kind chart for the koine Greek verb system. Although the font is small, the complete verb inflection system is on one sheet and well organized. The seven colors even add more usefulness to the chart. With different colors denoting an augment, connecting vowels, or endings, the conjugation pattern is clearly illustrated. A must for every Biblical Greek student.
