4 out of 5 stars Should have been a movie!.......2005-11-11

The Wrath of Khan is my favorite Star Trek movie, due to the fact that it ties in so well with the original series. After reading STAR TREK: THE MIRROR UNIVERSE SAGA, I can say that this story should have received the cinematic treatment as well, for the same reasons. THE MIRROR UNIVERSE SAGA collects the "New Frontiers" storyline from issues # 9 - 16 of DC's Star Trek series (waaaaay back in '84, remember?), where Captain Kirk and the members of the Enterprise crew re-encounter their evil Terran Empire doubles from the original series show "Mirror, Mirror". This time, however, the stakes are much higher - the Empire's planned invasion of our universe. Author Mike Barr constructs the story to occur between the events of the movies ST3: The Search for Spock and ST4: The Voyage Home. I cannot say if the Mirror Universe Saga fits perfectly with regular continuity, but I can say that the story was good enough for me to enjoy it, despite my not being a huge Trekkie. The plot is a logical extension of the TV episode (20 years later), explaining what happened after its conclusion and providing more information on the state of affairs in the Mirror Universe. The dialogue is written convincingly enough to where I had no problem imagining the actors voicing the actual lines. As you can guess, the plot involves quite a bit of mistaken identity, but Barr handles it well. The art by Tom Sutton and Ricardo Villagran is quite detailed and captures the look of the characters well. Unfortunately, it seems that it wasn't clear enough for the colorist, who obviously was confused between Captain Kirk and the alternate David Marcus, as well as between Lt. Uhura and Marlena. Try a little harder next time...

The introduction by ST novel author A. C. Crispin is the worst part of the book. It's not really so much an intro as it is slobbering praise of Star Trek's greatness. There's no background on the Mirror Universe, no discussion of the story's popularity or evil Spock's fashionable goatee... nothing. In fact, this intro could be used as generic copy to be placed at the beginning of every Star Trek novel or comic. I would think that someone so intimately involved with Star Trek could do better.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best Star Trek comic stories of all time!.......2001-07-22

This is the 8 part Mirror Uiverse saga story that was written and published by DC Comics in 1984. After the release of the movie " Star Trek III: the Search for Spock, Paramount Pictures gave the comic book license to DC comics to continue the stories after Star Trek III. This particular Story is the sequel to the Star Trek classic episode "Mirror, Mirror" Kirk and crew meet their counteparts from the other Star Trek Demension were the Federation is called the Empire and instead of space exploration the Empire's main goal is to conquer the Universe. This is a wonderful, well written sequel to that episode. And it looks more contemporary since this story takes place during the original Star Trek movies. Written by Mike W. Barr, Tom Sutton and the rest of the DC comics crew. This is one tale not to be missed by comic book fans, Sci-Fi fans, and Classic Star Trek fans a-like. Get it! If you find this out of print book it is definitly worth saving as Star Trek memorablia.

5 out of 5 stars Cloak and Dagger.......2001-01-09

This is the best of the DC comic series in the early eighties. It don't get better than this. Kirk takes the Excelsior to battle his evil counterpart in the Mirror Universe! Romulans, Klingons, a Spock double.....this one's got it all! This would have made a terrific film.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR ALL STAR TREK COLLECTIONS.......1998-08-08

This is a good book to have even if you have all of the issues of the comic series. The whole story is right here, and there is no need to change books to finish out the story. The Mirror Universe idea was a great one, taken from one of the best episodes of the TV series.Anyone who liked the idea in "Mirror,Mirror" has a great read ahead in this story since it carries on after the other story. The idea was put out for a long time that the Mirror Universe crew was 'NOT DONE YET' with the ideas put out in the TV episode. This is worth the look and well worth the time.

    Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Was the spirit of the 20th century really anarchist? In Jenny Sparks: The Secret History of the Authority it seems not only plausible but inevitable. The book spans our heroine's 100-year life, focusing on key elements in the development of the Authority metahuman team, and pointing out the mischief that she made along the way. True to the series' larger-than-life aesthetic, Sparks finds herself befriending a young Hitler, arranging for the destruction of a sentient Kansas City, and sticking it to the man every chance she gets. While not all of the details contained in the book will be clear to readers unfamiliar with the Authority or Stormwatch, it's still great fun and should inspire a few return trips to the 20th century. --Rob Lightner

5 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

A very interesting look at the history of the Spirit of the 20th century, a very complex heroine. Jenny Sparks is writing in her diary, knowing that her story is about to come to a close, with Swift keeping her company. We learn that Angie, the Engineer, goes back in time to tell her to start it in the first place. Very sneaky.

4 out of 5 stars Great companion book to the Ellis/Millar Authority series.......2005-12-16

What events transpired in the time between StormWatch's disbandment and the formation of the Authority? Jenny Sparks: The Secret History Of The Authority answers that question and shed some light on the untold tales of the superhero team formally known as StormWatch.

As he did so well on the The Authority series, Mark Millar's sarcastic dialogue is hilariously dark and witty. John McCrea's artwork was a pleasant surprise. His equivocal and caricature-esque style on Hitman has kept me away from that series but he demonstrates with this book that he can also pencil in a realistic and polished manner.

In the end, this collected edition is a must for Authority fans and represents a great starting point for new readers who are unfamiliar with The Authority. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Jenny Sparks if Forrest Gump!!!.......2005-08-15

This edition collects the mini-series of the same name. Jenny Sparks who guided the Authority has her life and the lives of the Authority examined in detail. A lot of blanks are filled with some left open.

Jenny is the spirit of the twentieth century and we see her life in various stages. She suffers from the "Forrest Gump Syndrome" she is one of those figures who interacts and acts upon the famous and infamous and shaped the twentieth century.

Out of all the stories I found the story of the Doctor and the Engineer the most interesting (which is not to say the others are bad just amongst a field of gems I am choosing the best).

Well worth the read while we wait for DC to reboot the Authority again.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice.......2004-01-29

A self-contained jaunt into the details of the history of Jenny Sparks. While it racks up an amazing number of improbable scenes, this is merely the clever exploitation of her characterization as the "Spirit of the 20th Century."

Fun, but not crucial to understanding The Authority.

4 out of 5 stars Great Background Material for "The Authority".......2001-07-27

This volume is a collection of issues from a comic book miniseries that details some of the background of Jenny Sparks, founder of the superhero group The Authority, and how she recruited its original members. It is not necessary to have read any of the issues from the core series itself (or from its predecessor, Stormwatch), but it is certainly helpful. The first few issues of The Authority are collected in the volumes "Under New Management" and "Relentless".

In any case, the individual tales show Jenny Sparks, who wields the power of electricity, encountering certain critical superheroes (Apollo, the Midnighter, the Engineer, and so forth) and convincing them in her unique way to join her group. Because the ageless Ms. Sparks is the literal Spirit of the 20th Century, she was born on January 1 of 1900 and knows she will die at the approach of the new millenium. Her long lifespan and her key role in world history means that she has been present at practically every critical event over the past few decades and that she wields enormous power in the secret government of the world. (She arranges the election defeat of Gerald Ford because she's angered at the Nixon pardon and makes sure that Reagan "will be taken care of".)

There's a whole hidden history of which we, the plebeian masses, remain unaware, complete with thwarted alien invasions, secret bases, and contacts with parallel worlds, such as Sliding Albion. Thankfully, swashbuckling heroes such as Hemingway and Einstein are around to pitch in to help the lusty Ms. Sparks.

This is a glorious full-color world that's chock full of gadgets, byzantine plots, improbable encounters, thoroughly evil villains, buckets of blood, cigarettes, whisky, and sex. The tales span several decades, and include an encounter with the occult-obsessed Nazis (and a shoutout to a certain Indiana Jones) and a time-travelling sentient city from the future that's come back to our era to destroy humanity for religious reasons.

The irreverent and sloppily-dressed Ms. Sparks hates practically all governments, and since the secret cabals that rule the world are in some cases shown to engage in human sacrifice, it's easy to see why. Primarily, she's out to have a good time, and to kick a lot of butt.

Good stories and great fun, and excellent artwork. A must-have for those who enjoy The Authority or Planetary!

2 out of 5 stars Interesting and Entertaning but Serious?.......2002-08-03

There are serious newspapers and there are tabloids. That's what sets this book apart I guess - the difference between a Washington Post and ... well, let's not name names as a metaphor of what I'm trying to say!

This book is definitely entertaining. Which is why I rank it 2 Stars instead of 1.

And it is thought provoking. But it's not thought provoking in the same sense that, say, a Clash of Civilizations (Huntington) is.

This makes you think, but not necessarily along the lines that the book leads.

          For the uninitiated, Ancient Secrets of the Bible attempts to prove "scientifically" the historical content of The Bible;
That '[T]he most amazing accounts in the Bible - called myths and stories by critics for centuries - are true'

Unfortunately, the approach is anything but scientific. A collection of statements (to the authors' credit, quotes are on both sides of the argument) is not scientific study.

At best, this is a sensationalist TV Show in book form. Which brings me to another point. Maybe we should beware of BOOKS which say "As Seen on TV" on the cover. There SHOULD be a difference between books and Infomercials. Unfortunately, with this book the similarity does not end with "As Seen on TV". I can almost hear a voice-over with this book - and it's NOT the steady tone of the Discovery Channel or NGC.

Finally, what exactly are Seller and Russell trying to prove here? Are they trying to prove the Historical accuracy of the Bible - a claim that the Bible is a reliable historical source? Or are they trying to extend this to claim that therefore everything about the Bible is true and therefore lay claims to the universality of the RELIGION that associates with it? I'm afraid the tone of the book leans towards the latter.

Agreed, this is a potentially sensitive issue - the comparision of religions, but it is a valid question, one which I've experienced quite strongly in my own community.

And this takes the book further away from the 'serious work' domain into, instead of sensationalism, gospel!!

Make up your mind - is this history, or theology?

3 out of 5 stars Uh, nice book........2000-12-04

This book started out a whole lot better than it ended. Though for me I guess most of it was not news and therefore many people will enjoy it more. It is simple enough reading for anyone to finish. And just as a warning, some of the biblical stories are novelized on and off throughout the book. (I don't know why) Personally I find metal artifacts that 'should not be' and discovering the roof burnt houses of ancient Sodom fascinating, however naturalizing and explaining dried up rivers and city walls a bit boring. And though the ark of the covenant should be fascinating as well, their lack of substance and evidence did not make it much of an exciting read. However, thats also because I've already read Grant Jeffrey's book to which they constantly referred. All in all I recommend this to those interested. But myself, I was satisfied only with the sections on Sodom, Babel, and the Exodus.
