Book Description
As elderly Lily Laceby dozes by the fire, her dog, Butch Aggie, becomes alarmed by strange noises outside. Finally awakened by Butch Aggie’s growls and barks, Lily finds a lovely surprise waiting for her. “The language, pacing, tension, and sparks of excitement are absolutely at one with the artwork.”--The Horn Book
Customer Reviews:
Surprise!.......2005-08-11
This is a cute story about one wild winter night. Lily Laceby, a very old lady, is busy sitting and dreaming by the fire, oblivious to all the noises going on around her. The noises are made by a group of people massing outside her front door. When she is woken up by their knock on the door, she finds all her friends and family there, wishing her a happy birthday.
The story loses a lot of charm in the description above, partly because the author does such a good job telling the tale. Also, the sounds made are emphasized by the font, and style choices of the words, another part of this book's charm.
The illustrations are not exactly my favorite, but they suit the book very well. They are colorful, but not bold nor clearly defined. Other than a slight dislike of the illustrations though, it is a good book.

Delightful Dignity.......2001-08-23
Mem Fox's story about the evening adventure of an older lady is told with dignity and joy. As Lily dozes by the fire, she dreams of her life and how it has changed. What an excellent way to introduce children to the concept that as they grow and change, the important things stay the same, such as love and family. It is also a delightful way to assure young children that though family members and neighbors may be old and seem very different, they have lived a life very similar. In our society, often the elderly are portrayed as a burden and not a blessing. Instead of focusing upon the contributions that these people have made, and continue to make, we discuss the burden of "caring for them." This book is a great way to show young children what older people may really be like. Most importantly, it is a sweet book about a delightful old lady and her adorable dog. Children and adults alike will be enthralled by the fabulous illustrations and the mystery of the "Night Noises." This is a book I highly recommend to all readers of quality children's literature. If you have never enjoyed a Mem Fox story before, this is a fabulous way to find a new favorite author.
Book Description
The Cruising Life: A Commonsense Guide for the Would-Be Voyager, Jim Trefethen. The funniest, drollest, wisest book on the shelf for the would-be cruiser. Trefethen pulls no punchesÑhe tells you just what will be involved if you and your family decide to "let slip the surly bonds of earth" and set sail. How to get ready, how to finance the voyage, how to live on your boat with maximum peace of mind and minimum hassle, and what equipment you do and don't need. (What you don't need may surprise you.)
Customer Reviews:
Must have for all crusiers or those thinking of cruising.......2007-01-02
Can't say enough about this book. Stright talk about cruising life, not just another euipment & tech guide. To top it off he mixes in enough humor to keep a smile on your face. My wife and I fight ove who gets to read it.
Thanks for giving us a truley great book Jim!
Impression.......2006-07-09
This book was about how to become a "minimilist". (In other words, get rid of all your material stuff, your ideas of "status", start to live simply, start exercising, and start saving, saving, saving!!) By building your "kitty", you're able to buy your boat with cash. It, too, was about practical stuff and a much simpler life! The only regret I had was that it didn't have any pictures! Other than no pictures-I loved it!
Not a practical sourse of information.......2006-03-25
Ok if you need som basic advice about making a decision to live aboard. Mostly it is posturing by the author and not much by way of real information, or thought provoking stories.
Written for Americans.......2005-05-15
This is a book written for Americans by an American. As a non-American some advice was irrelevant to me. Apart from this, I found it very useful; valuable insights as to what to expect from a cruising lifestyle, motivation to take the plunge and above all a humorous writing style. I found it compelling. Definitely a good book to read before you buy your yacht, and reread many times before you leave.
Cruising for people with more sense than money........2004-06-16
This is a book about how to go cruising.
What he is really dealing with in this book is the fear of what might go wrong if we go cruising, and how to plan for the best possible cruise.
He does not say it in his book but the reality is that more yachts are wrecked by badly judged finances than the sea, and proper financial planning is the core of this book.
If I were to consider this book to be at one end of the cruising book spectrum then 'Steel Away' by Smith and Moir would be at the other.
This book could save you time, money and much anguish.

Customer Reviews:
Sci-fi meets Christian beliefs!?!?!?!.......2006-02-20
I loved this book. I have been a Bunn fan since I read "Pale Riders" years ago. This is such a different genre for him that I was skepitcal when I read the back cover. I had trouble getting into the story at first, but when I did I couldn't put it down. I didn't want it to end when it did. It needs a sequel.
Personel beliefs.......2005-11-07
I was disapointed that the author injected his personel beliefs into the story. One would have no idea that the writer was going to spatter throughout the story his religious thoughts. It should be noted somewhere on the inside jacket or outside on the cover that the book contains regilious thoughts. When I Purchase a Clive Cussler or Dean Koontz book I dont expect it to be filled with their own personel religious beliefs. I am a Christian but I get my religion each sunday in church. If I want it in a novel I go to the religious book store. The point is at least let everyone know up front before they buy a book that they may be disappointent in.
A must read. Needs sequel........2004-02-26
I have had this book since it first got to the shelves. I have read it many times and never tire of it. The struggle to survive both physically and spiritually is fascinating and never ending. The only problem I had with this book is like with all the previous reviewers it ended too abruptly. It needs a sequel. I just wish someone would make a site that just had up and coming sequel listings . . .
Pass on this book.......2003-08-09
T Davis Bunn is one of my favorite authors. I also love reading science fiction, so it was with great excitement that I picked up this book. I'm sorry to say the writing is uneven, the science glossed over and unbelievable, and the characters unsympathetic. Stick to fiction, Mr. Bunn.
Great Books Needs More.......2002-06-30
I agree the book ended too abruptly, but that doesn't mean I didn't really love the story. It means...where's the sequel???
I'd love to see this book made into a movie.

I found this to be one of the most engaging books in our daughters' collection!! The illustrations are wonderful, and invite children to explore.
This is definitely a bedtime favorite for us. Our 2 1/2 - year old loves to read it "by herself."

Sailing Adventure Story, Travel Guide, and Design Tips.......1998-09-02
David Keiper's own story with photos and sketches; how he designed and built a unique hydrofoil yacht and sailed solo around the Pacific Ocean. It is a riveting adventure story that also includes many hard-earned design, manufacturing, safety, and financial tips. Vivid, active prose that puts you there "in the picture," experiencing the unfolding adventure as Dave experiences it, and solving problems with Dave as they happen. Will be enjoyed by anyone who likes adventure, and is must reading for anyone who wants to design and build a high performance hydrofoil sailing yacht.
Customer Reviews:
Buy this series.......2005-01-14
Fabulous book. One of the best children's books I have ever read, and certainly the best Christian book. I'm usually not into Christian fiction, but I bought Dream Voyager when I was about 13 and still enjoy it to this day. I wish Locke would continue the series.
Very Fantastical Fantasy!.......2003-11-13
When I read this book yesterday, I must confess I was confused because I haven't read the other books in the series. It didn't make very much sense to me, but now that I've read the descriptions of the other books I understand how all the characters fit in. A 17-year-old named Consuela goes on an amusement park ride and finds herself in a bewildering new world of high-tech space lingo. She falls in love with a young man named Wander. Meanwhile, her semi-boyfriend flipped out because she disappeared. His name is Rick. So he calls a friend of Consuela's(Dan from Light Weaver) and Dan goes on the amusement park ride, too. But then he says that Rick will have to go after Consuela himself. So Rick ends up in the different world, too. This book has adventure: chasing pirates, battles in space, everything that sci-fi is known for. I would definitely recommend that you read the first book in this series, which is Light Weaver. It will make more sense to you.

Beautifully Illustrated.......2003-03-08
This book was given to us. My 2 year old twins have loved it from the beginning. We started reading it when they were about 10 months. There are so many aspects of this book to like such as the beautiful pictures. Each page not only has a main picture but it is surrounded by small characters. My kids love to point to the pictures and call them by name. The rhyming text makes it fun to read and easy for my kids to remember. This book is one of my favorites to read at night before tucking my little ones into bed. It is definitely one of those books I will keep to pass on to their children.
a giraffe on the moon.......2000-07-28
Sandy Nightengale, a British painter, has provided a wonderous collection of images with a whacky text - talk of elephant sandwiches.... Perfect for the 2-4 year old creativly developing set. The text comes full circle in the end when it's discovered that we can see anything in our dreams. A beautifully illustrated book.

Learned Introduction to Social Ethics.......2004-12-13
My eyes glazed over in places, and I had to struggle to finish the book, but on balance believe the author provides a learned introduction to social ethics and the topic of how morality, community, and democracy are inter-twined.
My over-arching note on the book is that information can and should be a moral force, and a force for good within any community.
The author's bottom line is that morality must be inherent in the individual--it cannot be imposed, only taught--that those who consider themselves religious are not necessarily moral, and that politicians cannot be neutral on moral relativism, or they open the door to moral extremists.
Among my notes in the margins, inspired by the author: cannot turn responsibility into duty; citizens failing to be socially responsible can open the door to tyranny; anarchy comes with excessive autonomy--deviance allowed is deviance redefined as acceptable; communitarians may be an alternative to the extreme right, something is needed with the collapse of the democrats; organizational morality is important--should corporations be allowed to degrade and exploit humans in the name of "neutral" economic values?; shared values are the heart of sensible sustainable policy making; laws can inspire corruption and crime; inherent morality is the opposite; many policies (e.g. transportation, housing, education) do not provide for social impact evaluation; no such thing as "value free" anything; monolithic communities harm the multi-layered community.
Given seven layers of dialog, from neighborhood to national, it is possible to have every citizen participate in a national dialog in the course of a single day. This makes it irresponsible for any of us to accept a political process that claims to be value neutral while opening the door for extremists. I have said this, but this excellent book documents it: you get the government you deserve. Participate, or lose it.

The New Golden Rules Can Only Help Humanity.......2005-10-24
Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D. wrote a genuine and beautiful guide. The New Golden Rules compromise of:
The First New Golden Rule: Part I - Energize Your Spirit
Part II - Satisfaction of the Soul
Part III - The Company of the Holy
The Second New Golden Rule: Listen and Agree
The Third New Golden Rule: Dissolve Your Blocks
The Fourth New Golden Rule: See the Other Person As Yourself
This is an authentically empowering book for anyone who wished to evolve on all levels of life for a life filled with inner peace rather than inner turmoil.
Here is a passage that I feel captures the essence of this book: I'm quoting from Chapter Five: "Deep Listening and Acceptance"
"Hearing is something that happens automatically as long as your ears are healthy. To really listen, however, requires cultivating concentration and learning to pay attention. It involves being patient, and perhaps most important, suspending judgment about what you hear. As you become a good listener, you become aware of the message beyond the words and learn how to tune in to the heart of the individual speaking...These attributes are also critical when you listen for the voice of God and want to appreciate His will for you...The best way to comprehend - be it another person or your Higher Power is to listen carefully, which requires discovering what lies inside our deepest self...Sometimes you may hear the voice of God, but you don't want to accept it. That's why you must not only listen, but also agree to follow the instructions and not judge, overanalyze, or label...
This is truly a wonderful book to help humanity evolve. I highly recommend it!
Barbara Rose, Ph.D. author of Stop being the String Along: A Relationship Guide to Being THE ONE and Know Yourself
Editor, inspire! magazine
excellent!.......2005-08-15
Excellent book for your spiritual development.
Im deep connected to the God and spiritual person and I still learned few things from this book. I highly recommend for everybody who wants to have a better life, be guided by the God and experience your full potential.
He talks that we should see other person like yourself. I agree with that but I think that is better approach if you see other people like a God, because God is inside of us in our soul. We are all part of the God and when you see other person you can see a God inside. That is a God-self realisation.
Dr. Dharma has a pure energy and his kharma is excellent. I recommend this book to everybody who wants to get a spiritual bliss. Love you all.

1000 Stars For This Book!.......2005-04-02
All I can say is that I think that if a person is drawn to this book then they have a deep wish to improve themselves. If you have had times when you have not been proud of your behavior toward others then this book will help you with that. After you are done reading this book you may just do what I did and still do every day whenever I think of it...you might just thank your guardian angel for the rest of your life for having brought this book to your attention.
A Book To Help You Get Past Yourself.......2000-05-11
My definition of this book would be:"spiritual tough-love".There are 114 totally different little incidents related in this book which all have a lesson for us. It was as if the author looked at 114 different aspects of a person's behavior and gave us some sound advice on how to conduct ourselves so that we would feel that we had atleast some spiritual backbone if we were ever in the same predicaments.
This is a book to read when you think that its time somebody got tough with you(meaning YOURSELF).If you're there now at that point, buy this book..you won't regret it.
it's the only way to live in the path of light.......1999-09-24
this book is really a treasure for anyone to read,to try to work on himself or herself to see things we do in our daily life without giving any imporatnce .it's time that we go deeper & give meaning to the smallest actions ,to spirutalize everything we do. if we can try to do what is written in this book! i think the whole world will be in peace. to summerize ,i love the harmony & peace in this book..
The most important book I've read.......1999-05-06
This isn't an oracle, but it is a man I consider to be a Master of cosmic laws and realities. That looming question most people have of 'why am i here', etc., are dealt with in an easy to understand, cohesive (sp?) manner. Not all of that twisted-back on itself confusion of 'sometimes yes, sometimes no' so called 'spiritual enlightenment', i find a lot books of this genre to be. If i was stranded on a desert island i would take his books above all others because the uplift and the make me think and change every aspect of myself for the better. I would go as far as to say he is the single most important influence in my life after my mother.
He never 'wrote' any of his books, they are transcribed from his taped lectures he gave many, many years ago in France.

Book Description
The Golden Rule is an idea whose time has finally come. It may seem like a meek and mild mannered philosophy, but behind it's Clark Kent disguies is the most powerful force the world has ever seen. If you think that's an exaggeration, consider what a mere spiritual ideal did to the mighty Roman Empire.
We really can make a difference - each and every one of us. But it starts with you. This book's plan will bring you new joy in living, satisfaction and a sense of purpose. It gives specific, easy methods for achieving your goals. Today your living room...tomorrow the world!

This book's basic message is Love. Not the 'romantic' type of love between two people "in love", but rather the kind of love that involves being kind, compassionate and caring to others. This type of love is therefore called "Unselfish Love". It is also known to some as the Golden Rule. Great thinkers such as Benjamin Franklin, Albert Schweitzer and Albert Einstein believed in and saw the great importance of the Golden Rule.
Contrary to the commonly known version of "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" (which isn't completely selfless), this book presents the utterly unselfish version of the Golden Rule - to Love others Unselfishly. It is also given as a COMMANDMENT by Jesus in a beautiful, crystal clear manner: "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another"
To help you apply the Golden Rule in your life and relationships, this book presents scientifically proven techniques that, instead of `cutting at the branches', gives you the tools to remove the ROOT PROBLEMS, located deep in the subconscious mind. Using the techniques from this book has helped me achieve amazing results like overcoming anxiety disorders including phobia's and deeply rooted emotional problems and becoming a better, more virtuous person overall.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who's willing to take a deep look at themselves and wants to help make this world a better place - one person at a time.
[NOTE: Since it's out of print, it can also be bought on many major e-book stores.]
Read this to assist in your joyful participation in the ..........2005-04-02
...sorrows of the world. How can one simply put the message in the book without discouraging the curious? This book teaches you how to "unselfishly love" in a real world context, Good luck in your quest.
Ready to Walk your Talk?.......2000-07-07
For any 'seeker' who has decreed that he/she is ready to start the work that it takes to find true peace and develop a loving attitude towards everyone, this book is for you. Packed full of useful tools and guidelines for developing your inner being, you will find answers to issues that have plagued you all your life. It's not called a workbook for nothing, though. Unlike the 'airy fairy' approach to self-improvement, this book shows you how to reach down in your self and root out all the blocks which have kept you from your 'normal' state of bliss. I have worked with the lessons in this book for many months now and can attest to the positive changes which have taken place in my life as a direct result. So I can whole-heartedly recommend it to all who are ready to roll up their sleeves and tackle the hard stuff. There are affirmations to help guide you into developing more positive relationships in your life. And there are ground rules for learning to communicate freely and without anger with everyone you encounter. Please read this book and feel the love and care that the authors have for each and every one of us. It is an experience that could change your life, and the lives of those around you.
The Golden Rule Workbook.......2000-05-12
I would recommend this book to anyone who's interested in seeing the world become a nice place where people treat each other well and are happy. If you have read the Lost Teachings of Atlantis and were interested in the application of the ancient philosophies Jon Peniel learned at the monastery, you will love the book. It's a really useful and inspiring book if you want to be the kind of person who belongs in a better world. I wish everyone would read this and use it- what a wonderful world we would have!
