This book will provide you with an overview of one of the traditional native tanning processes (used primarily on Buffalo and Moose hides), but there is no-where near enough detail to actually do any tanning. Amazon.com sells two books that will give you the detail and expertise you need to tan skins "the Indian way": DEERSKINS INTO BUCKSKINS: How to Tan with Natural Materials, and Wetscrape Braintan Buckskin. Get one or both if you want to do any tanning or want a much more thorough overview of native tanning methods

Award-winning author Nalo Hopkinson's first collection is Skin Folk, and its 15 stories are as strong and beautiful as her novels.

"The Glass Bottle Trick" retells the Bluebeard legend in a Caribbean setting and rhythms, for a sharp, chilling examination of love, gender, race, and class. In the myth-tinged "Money Tree," a Canadian immigrant's greed sends him back to Jamaica in pursuit of an accursed pirate treasure. In "Slow Cold Chick," a woman must confront the deadly cockatrice that embodies her suppressed desires. In the postapocalyptic science fantasy "Under Glass," events in one world affect those in another, and a child's carelessness may doom them both. The lightest of fantastic imagery touches "Fisherman," a tropically hot tale of sexual awakening, and one of the five original stories in Skin Folk. --Cynthia Ward

4 out of 5 stars Skin Folk an Interesting Read!.......2005-10-25

This book was an insightful and witty look at Caribbean spirituality, magic and stories written in typical Nalo style. Great read!

4 out of 5 stars Caribbean Thrills and Chills.......2004-11-06

Nalo Hopkinson has made waves with some of the most offbeat and creative speculative fiction in recent memory, with her Caribbean roots adding unexpected flavor to tales of future societies and alternate realities. She's also one of the very few black women working in the field, adding a much-needed new voice to the genre. But watch out for the "sci-fi" stereotype that has been applied to Hopkinson, because she has a more well-rounded style that also includes strong elements of fantasy and horror. Those strengths are evident in this collection of short stories, which are often built upon the unique fairy tales and folklore of the Caribbean, but then proceed into all manner of great fictional speculations.

Some of the tales here are rather underdeveloped and move along too quickly, with implausible plot jumps and incomplete conclusions. Examples are "Tan Tan and Dry Bone" which is merely a distilled vignette from one of Hopkinson's later novels; or the potentially terrifying, but rushed and inconclusive, "Greedy Choke Puppy." However the day is saved by winners like "Under Glass," which has a very unique doomsday/dystopia scenario, and great sketches of expatriate Caribbean characters and culture in "Money Tree" and "A Habit of Waste." The apex of the collection is the highly disturbing erotica tale "Ganger (Ball Lightning)," in which a couple learns to overcome malfunctioning and possessed bedroom toys and work out their relationship problems the old-fashioned way. This is in fact one of Hopkinson's best running themes - as technology's got nothing on culture and humanity. [~doomsdayer520~]

Judith Woolcock Colombo

Hot and spicy with the rhythm of the Caribbean, Skin Folk is a collection of 15 short stories by Jamaican born Canadian author Nalo Hopkinson. These tales are bonded together by a common theme, change or shedding of skin. All is illusion; nothing is, as it first seems within the pages of this book.

Beginning with the first story Riding The Red, we see the illusion being stripped away by this bizarre twist on the tale of Little Red Riding Hood. Here the elderly Red Riding Hood cautions her daughter to watch her granddaughter who has now begun "to ride the red." This is the time when wolfie comes around to capture and seduce. The grandmother admits "the red hood was mine, to catch his eye," but wolfie also had his dance "all hot breath and leaping flank, piercing eyes to see and strong hands to hold." Encountering wolfie is a natural consequence of riding the red or puberty. It is part of coming of age.

In Money Tree, Silky must reluctantly embrace the heritage of her Mamadjo or mermaid mother in order to save her greedy brother Morgan when he seeks to wrest pirate treasure away from River Mumma. In Something To Hitch Meat To, Artho is given the gift of seeing people and things as they really are by a strange spider-like little girl, and in Under Glass, a young girl living in a post apocalyptic world dooms another world with her careless play.

This concept of illusion and magical change continues throughout the book in stories such as Tan-Tan and Dry Bone where a soft hearted girl has pity on death disguised as a starving old man and takes him home only to learn if you pick him up you pick up trouble..

Although some stories were too similar, others were truly extraordinary. Skin Folk is a wonderful read, and I highly recommend it. ...

2 out of 5 stars fairy tales, not SF.......2002-12-30

I didn't like it.

I am unfamiliar with the rest of this Author's work, so I can't tell you whether it is like her novels or not, but when I judge this work by itself I find it wanting.

This is a rather long collection of rather short stories. Most of these have not been published elsewhere. The norm for the SF field is for single author anthologies to be composed mostly if not completely of previously published work. Take this as a warning that you may not be getting what you expected.

The stories seem to follow a very common and uninteresting fairy tale format. Fairy tales can be made interesting-- for instance Italo Calvino's Italian Folk Tales. These were not.

As a point of reference, I favor "literate" SF. Some of my favorite authors are Kim Stanley Robinson, Gene Wolfe, Ursula LeGuin, Bruce Sterling, Thomas Disch, early Larry Niven...

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Fantasy and SF Tales Graced By Caribbean Rhythms.......2002-04-07

Nalo Hopkinson's splendid gifts as a brilliant, often unique, writer of literary fictional prose that is also intriguing fantasy and science fiction are amply shown in this fine collection of short stories. Most of these have been published previously in relatively unknown anthologies in Canada and the United States; two are unpublished, and a third is a chapter from her novel "Midnight Robber". Hopkinson has a splendid ear for dialogue and a marvellous eye for scenery, with a taut, lean prose which effectively captures the Caribbean patois of her childhood. "Skin Folk" is a fascinating look at her artistic growth as a writer; here are stories about demons and ghosts as seen through the eyes of West Indians, along with occasional glimpses of cyberpunk science fiction. One of the most memorable tales is "Greedy Choke Puppy", an incandescent look at Vampire mythology with a uniquely West Indian twist; other compelling tales include "Slow Cold Chick" and "Fisherman" which are intriguing meditations on magic and sex.

                Book Description

Known to be a masterpiece of freethought literature, The World's Sixteen Crucified Saviors has been out of print but sought after for many years. A small part of it was reprinted in The Book Your Church Doesn't Want You to Read in 1994, thereby causing renewed interest. Many people are unaware that before Christianity there were 15 other religions that also had a savior who died for their sins, then arose from the dead. Graves gives all the details inside, plus much more found in common like the immaculate conception of the gods, virgin born gods, magi, shepherds and angels who visit the infant saviors, the birthday of the gods being December 25th, plus an explanation as to how Jesus began to be worshipped as a God. Some scholars are suggesting that Jesus had spent time in India. One chapter in this book discusses 346 striking analogies between Christ and Chrishna, the Hindu god. Could this same story have travelled from India rather than the man himself? Could this everpresent story, "the greatest story ever told," be the common link between all early religions? Has the purpose of religion, in general, been designed to provide all of mankind with a common set of beliefs, to keep us from learning the real truth for ourselves? It is difficult to answer these questions, and it probably always will be, but this book offers us a small step closer to the answers. It shows that Christianity is not alone and special in its beliefs, and may cause us to explore further into the origins of religion.

                5 out of 5 stars 16 Crucified Saviors?.......2006-11-03

I love the way the author tells it like it is. Blind believers will definitely hate this book. It is virtually based solely on astronomy & astrology thru-out the entire book. The blind believers will love to deny this. Another few books to look towards are: Suns of God, The Faith Healers, The Dark Side of Christian History. Of course, this goes for all religions world-wide. Past, present & future.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the read...........2006-02-10

While I agree with other reviewers that Graves goes over the edge fairly often throughout the book, the information contained in this book is very thought provoking and not really available elsewhere in one work. Some of the comparisons are pretty loose, and the book might better have been titled '10 crucified saviors', but still, the work attempts and succeeds at showing a prominent religious thread throughout history.
The writing style, while modern enough to be an easy read, IS from 1875 and lacks the modern understanding of a 'scholarly' approach. Having read MANY works on this subject, I can attest that most of the information is indeed correct, but his style is often inflammatory and somewhat obnoxious. He Really had a problem with Christianity and much of the book is devoted to this topic. This is probably great if you avidly detest Christians as well, but ocassionally annoying if your just trying to extract the relevant info from the book.
All in all, this IS a worthwhile read, but can be challenging because of the above considerations.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2006-01-27

I bought this book at a time in my life when I was quite anti-Christian, but once I got into the book I found myself defending Christianity from an author who obviously hated the Christian faith and just wanted to discredit it. Some of the things said in this book are out right ridiculous. Also the title is a bit misleading sincee most of the book is about Christ and Krishna and their similarities. Yes the book does actually mention sixteen saviors but a few of them are a bit ...loose. I don't know when this book was written but the sentence structure is really awkward. That being said most of the actual fact stated are trtue as far as I can tell. In short, read it if you can, but don't pay money for it.

                5 out of 5 stars Very Informative!.......2005-08-30

This is a great book that discusses religious history pertaining to the different messiahs and all the similarities contained within the different religions.

5 out of 5 stars When there down finished them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-05-04

First off every reader who says graves doesn't have his sources is wrong. You can find each of the stories in the Hindu as well as the Buddhist Holy books. Ask the representatives of these faiths and they'll tell you. Something else readers should know about the links between 3 of these saviors.

                Krishna was born 1200 B.C

                Buddah was born 600 B.C

Christ was born in the year 0.

This is a 600 hundred year time span between each of these saviors. If you think this is by accident, you either have blind faith or you don't care that your running yourself into a brick wall. There was a history and what I like to call a Mithory to each of these people. The History of each story presents the accurate social situatians of each savior and the people Historically in a certain area. The Mithory says that each savior had a virgin birth, was threatened to be killed at birth, had 3 temptations, walked on water and in the end was crucified. Let me say here that Jesus was a real person but like many others was deified after his death. This was not an uncommon thing, because of you look at Alexander the Great, son of Phillip, after his death he became son of Zues. Also Siddartha Guatama(Buddah) was a real person because he fought against social class systems. This was something going on in India during his days and still today. Any serious reader interested in reading on the Sudras, and Untouchables, a class discriminated against by the Bhramins(Whites) and overall Hinduism because they were black, read a scholar's scholar Dr. Ivan Van Sertima and Runoko Rashidi in "Africans in Early Asia."

In the End Kersey Graves wrote a good for his time. To verify if these stories are true, try to preach Christiany to any follower of the Buddah or Krishna(Hindu deity) and they will tell you,"I already have this."

                Free your mind!

                        Book Description

Khrisna of India. Thammuz of Syria. Esus of the Celtic Druids. Mithra of Persia. Quexalcoati of Mexico. All were crucified gods, and all met their fates hundreds of years before Jesus appeared on the scene. In this foundational work of modern atheism, American spiritualist KERSEY GRAVES (1813-1883) breaks the Christ myth down into its component parts and ably demonstrates how the story of Jesus has its roots in the depths of antiquity. Here you'll read about the surprising prevalence throughout global folklore of: . the miraculous and immaculate conception of the gods . stars that point out the time and place of a savior's birth . angels, shepherds, and magi visiting an infant savior . the 25th of December as the universal birth date of gods . saviors who descend into Hell . and much more. This is essential reading for students of comparative mythology and modern freethinkers. Also available from Cosimo: Graves's The Biography of Satan and The Bible of Bibles

This book contain powerful and helpful information to those who are open to truth. A great deal of effort and research was done prior to its writing. I found it very helpful to me in understanding the problems we face in the world of religion.

5 out of 5 stars Spirited Reasoning by Graves..........2007-06-07

I found the sylized writing charming in a late 1800's kind of way. The points made by Kersey Graves abolish all credibility that Chrisianity is an "oringianl religion." It further establishes solid proof by example, that Religious "Faith" in general, not just Jesus and Christianity, is a bogus dysfunctional lifestyle choice from the past.

Yet, people love to indulge in a Savior Fetish... Pick One. They are all the same.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but vague.......2007-03-06

I like this book but I have to say the author makes many vague references to individuals using nothing other than their name (Mr. Jones said..") It left me wondering just who these people were and how reliable their info was. After reading it I did a little research on my own as he mentions a man named Polycarp who claimed that the Christ he knew lived to about 50 and died of natural causes. This is interesting because the Polycarp I read about was considered a saint and a early founder and supporter of the christain faith. Anyhoo, I still liked the book though the wording was odd. It is one of several I have read that simply reaffirms that the christian faith is a rip off of prior pagan and mythological beliefs.
