Book Description
Acclaimed nonfiction author Jim Murphy now turns his hand to spinning yarns. Fergus O'Mara, a resourceful Irish lad, is especially clever at avoiding work. On his way to an evening of fun, he encounters the dreaded Night-Demon. Fergus keeps on walking, but this demon means business, and our hero will have to work hard to get himself out of a "grave" situation. With haunting humor and high spirits, Jim Murphy and John Manders have created a suspenseful tale that's scary enough for a Halloween read-aloud and funny enough to be enjoyed at any time. Author's note.

Clever Fergus O'Mara is good at avoiding work - and finding fun. But his attempts to discourage a night demon doesn't work, and Fergus begins to realize his tendency to give excuse and ignore reality will only get him deeper into trouble. John Manders provides the vivid drawings to a fun tale.

Super Reader.......2007-08-31
Not as good as the first one. In the opening Sonja runs afoul of an ammbitious mercenary band's second in command. He bumps off the boss, and blames her. She, of course, bails, and a chase ensues.
Amazingly enough, they stumble across a little known city. It has an aging queen, a doddering wizard, some monks, and temple virgins. Oh, and a bunch of earth demons that need sacrificies. Sonja sees 6 of them outside the gate (the remains of your several nubile girls, of course), while looking for entry, shelter and food.
Conflict ensues between the slack city guard, the mercenary band, etc. The wild card is a Shemite dog-wizard in the mercenary band, a local wizard, who has some control over the demons to some degree. Dog he is not, more of the 'hellfire and earthquakes variety', which he demonstrates at one point, when saving Sonja and a temple ex-virgin.
Backstabbing military leader does not fare well, Shemite becomes wizard's apprentice, temple ex-wizard steals wizard's wand, blasts guys in city. Most of everybody dies, except a red headed Hyrkanian, a couple of wizards, a temple ex-virgin and her foreigner city dwelling monkish scholar boyfriend.
Demon Night Synopsis.......1998-08-29
Red Sonja: Demon Night
"She lived in a savage world in an uncivilized age - a world ruled by men and governed by the sword. They called her Red Sonja - for her flame red hair and the smoldering fire of her pride. Falsely charged with the murder of a commander to whom she had sworn allegiance, Red Sonja must flee or be killed without a chance to clear her name. Deep in the desert she encounters the city of Elkad, and, exhausted, seeks shelter there. She enters the city against her better judgment, for hanging before the gates are the shriveling bodies of six young women, clearly the victims of some blood-thirsty ritual....." A great book - fantastic action and interesting characters - One of the most fascinating aspects is the obsession of Red Sonja's pursuers....It's unfortunate that these books are out of print, they certainly beat some of today's fantasy offerings.....

'Oh, I believe in them - absolutely'.......2006-03-25
Fantastic to have a book in print about my favourite movie ever. Thank you Mr. Earnshaw!
It's actually a very funny story, because nobody who worked on it seemed to be of the opinion that they were making a supernatural masterpiece that would be revered decades on: they all seemed to think that somebody else ruined it somehow. And actors who gave stonking performances like Brian Wilde and Maurice Denham seem to have barely registered that they were actually in it - although I bet Niall McGinnis recognised the worth of what he did.
I always thought American lead Dana Andrews was a bit stiff playing the sceptical psychologist, but reading about how he seems to have spent the entire shoot drunk during the day and raving it up in nightclubs in the evening, I now think he must have been an acting genius.
Nothing can ever ruin this marvellous film for me - wherever you all are, whether in your dotage or in film peoples' heaven, you all produced a little piece of magic!
The dropped star is because in the actors' biographies, where they are all given their photos and bios, the marvellous Peter Elliott - K T Kumar of Bombay - is simply not included. Otherwise, a super read.
Beating the Devil,The Making of Night Of The Demon.......2006-02-10
If you are a fan of the movie Night of The Demon/Curse of the Demon I think you will really enjoy this book. It's really interesting to see the pictures of the locations where this movie was filmed and what these locations look like today. The mini biographies on the actors that were in the movie are very interesting too. With all the other little bits of information about the movie and the great pictures makes this book well worth the price.I'am a fan of this movie and I really enjoyed this book.
A Triumph!.......2006-02-03
This book has been described by the press as a "masterpiece", and indeed it is. This well-written book is just the ideal length to cover a film such as this. No turgid analysis here, but a lively, enthusiastic revelation of the making of this film (which was fraught with many problems from the beginning). Well illustrated, despite Columbia Pictures strange refusal to allow many of the stills to be reproduced. The first print run is just about gone - film fans have snapped up this collector's item!
more info uncovered.......2005-11-10
i was happy to put the author in touch with star peggy cummins, etc and i think he has produced a very entertaining book about an excellent film.
as the official historian for elstree film studios, where it was made in 1956, i have met many of those involved behind and in front of the camera on 'night of the demon' over the past 35 years. i even screened the film at the studio in 1987 in the viewing theatre where the rushes were originally screened, to a teenage audience who loved it. sadly many of the actors and crew are no longer with us but tony's book reminded me to dig out notes on various conversations i had with them over the years and some studio files..all of which never before published. i think they may 'put to rest' the questions about the monster sequences, etc. i hope to put in into arcticle form for the excellent american mag 'the little shoppe of horrors' later this year.
Curse of the Film Bore!.......2005-09-29
Night/Curse of the Demon remains a personal favourite and I picked this up with some anticipation. To be fair, it's a workmanlike effort, containing a fair amount of information (Night of the Demon references in Rocky Horror and Kate Bush songs no less!) but it still struggles to fill just over a hundred pages. The author's clearly happier relating the minutiae of creating a film than exploring any of the themes raised, which can be less than enthralling.
As a consequence of this, some interesting threads (the star meeting dotty anthopologist Margaret Murray, inventor of Wicca, for example) are left to hang, while unflattering character sketches of the producer (a crass and commercial producer - well I never!) tend to drag. You'd also expect to see pretty much every still from the film here, but several are missing, and stock photos of some of the locations are frankly a little dull.
This is by no means a failure, but certainly a missed opportunity. The intros by Alex Cox and Christopher Fraying both rather leave the author's efforts in the shade, hinting at what could've been done with livelier prose. It's quite possible that Night of the Demon couldn't carry a book on its own, in which case it might've been expanded into something on the career of the director Jaques Tourneur, something on M R James adaptations, Crowley on the big screen, or any one of a dozen other angles. As is, this is an extended monograph on a brilliant B-movie, aimed at film students rather than fright fans. Perhaps it was cursed...

Deep within the blood-drenched walls of an ancient mansion Nathan Courtwright initiates a bizarre rite that will free every depraved soul since time immemorial to prey upon the living. But when the mausoleum is torn down a century later, the evil that was Nathan Courtwright escapes...an evil capable of prying into its victims' deepest fears and blackest nightmares. Haunted by frightening visions, Paul Stanford returns to the fate-shrouded town of Dark Harbor, Maine--a town filled with sorrow and dark memories. Within days he finds himself locked in a desperate and terrifying struggle that spans a century-old feud and demonic desires. Only he holds the key to the door of the damned-a key that will cost him the life of the woman he loves and his very soul. A key that will fill the world with Night Demons...

NIGHT DEMONS.......2007-03-15
Can a person's dreams answer questions that elude them in their waking hours? Can they lead you to the place, or person, where these questions will be answered? And do you really want those answers?
These questions seem to rule the life of Paul Stanford. Every since running from Dark Harbor, Maine, as a young man, he has never been able to stay in any one place, or have a long lasting relationship with anyone, because of his dreams. Dreams that seem to haunt him everywhere he goes.
But now, it was time to go back to Dark Harbor and face these dreams, and face the woman he left so many years ago, because of these dreams. He needs answers, but even more, he needs Jenny Gazio, the girl he left behind ten years ago.
Upon returning however, Paul finds much more than just answers to his questions. He finds evil. An evil that wants to consume Paul, and the entire town of Dark Harbor. An evil that crosses a century. Only Paul can stop it before it devours the entire town. And only he can save Jenny from this Demon that is determined to win. A Demon that is so evil that both he, and Jenny could very well lose the battle.
I have to admit that I am not a horror fan. Not one bit. But Howard Hopkins is a genus when it comes to writing this genre. He not only scares a person to death, but he can also hold ones attention so well that no matter how scared you are, you cannot look away from the pages. NIGHT DEMONS grabs your attention on page one. But at the same time the horror is woven around a wonderful story. A story that really keeps you guessing, and wondering, what will happen next. But like Paul, do you really want to know? And also like Paul, you just have to know.
I can rave enough about NIGHT DEMONS. It is such an absorbing story, and so horrifying at the same time. If you are a horror fan, NIGHT DEMONS will put all the others you have ever read on the back burner. If you are not a horror fan, you will become a Howard Hopkins horror fan immediately. I know, I have. NIGHT DEMONS is one book you just have to read. But do not read it without all the lights on, the doors locked, and the phone close by. Because you just never know.................the Demon may be very near by.

Book Description
A young man awakes from a recurring nightmare to find that, once again, his apartment has been destroyed: the TV is on fire, the mirrors shattered, the aquarium exploded with such force that shards of glass are embedded in the opposite wall; and once again a voice is saying, "Come home..." And so he does. Home is the small Maine town where his parents were both killed in a grotesque car wreck years before. The kind of town Stephen King has described as "mostly indifference spiced with an occasional vapid evil-or worse, a conscious one." A small town caught in a centuries-old war between supernatural forces. This is a genuinely frightening tale of death and demons, love and possession.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A nobody, a drifter, a wanderer, manages to get caught up in strange, supernatural events.
Affected by odd feelings for a while, he lets these feelings take
him home. When he gets there, he is walking into a Steven King story.
Same sort of setting, same type of events.
It seems that he is quite a bit more important than the thought.
Very Fun Read.......2005-11-25
I picked this up the other day knowing I had a bit of time off around Thanksgiving, and wanting something quick and fun to read. This book did not disapoint.
It's a pretty straight forward story with enjoyable characters and a decent threat for them to overcome. It moved fast and kept me interested right up until the end. It isn't a long read -- I read it in one day -- but the length felt about right for the story.
I really found nothing to quible about, and don't agree with some of the more critical reviews on this site (although the general consensus of the reviews does seem positive.) In particular, I remember one review stating the story should have focused more on one of the side characters (the Priest,) rather than the main character Eric, and I disagree completely. I found Eric and his powers interesting, and thought the part played by the Priest in the story fit well as it was.
Anyway, this book was just about exactly what I expected it to be when I picked it up, and was exactly what it should have been. Sometimes you're in the mood for a book you have to work at, sometimes you want something that will simply entertain you. Like Joe R. Landsdale's Dead in the West, this book fits squarely in the latter.
Very enjoyable, but could have been so much more!.......2004-08-09
I love JMS's Spider-man and Supreme Power and Rising Stars comic books, and I definitely enjoyed reading his first book. However, I kept expecting a bigger payoff, a deeper story, and more engaging characters. The "team" that battled the demons were interesting, but I felt that they were very "by the books." What really would have hooked me was more insight into the demons that were hell-bent on taking over the town. Why exactly did they want this small little town in Maine? Who exactly was the head demon? And the ending was also a bit of a letdown. BUT, the novel had enough interesting ideas and cool fight scenes and dialogue that I'd definitely recommend it! I'd love to see what JMS could do now with a dark horror novel, after years of honing his craft!!
Something Vaguely Uneasy.......2004-06-16
As I read this book, though a fan of JMS' comics and Babylon 5, I couldn't quite get a good feel for this. It wasn't a bad book, per se, but it seemed to be lacking something.
As I read further, I really felt the problem was JMS wasn't really getting too involved with telling the story on more than a surface level. There was a void of some kind. I got the impression that the reason JMS works so well as a scriptwriter for TV or comics is because there he can work to get his character fleshed out in colarborations with actors, directors, artists, etc. Here, it's just him. There's nothing really wrong with the story or the characters, but I get the impression Demon Night would have worked much better as a script of some kind rather than a novel.
Granted, JMS originally wrote this for himself and wasn't planning on publishing it, but I felt the book lacked much of a voice of its own and felt it was a bad sign when the concluding remarks showed more of JMS' personality than the book itself.
Very good first novel from creator of Babylon 5 and Jeremiah.......2004-02-29
A first novel can be a scary thing; the first screenplay I wrote (all 98 pages of it)was pretty darn frightening. I wrote it for the same reason JMS wrote this novel--the entertainment I wanted to see hadn't been produced. "Demon Night"'s strengths include strong characters, well written prose and thoughtful observations. The plot manages to incorporate a lot of things we've seen before but in a new, fresh fashion. The pacing and prose make "Demon Night" an easy read. I will admit, though, that the pacing at the beginning was a bit of a challenge but the mystery about why and how the main characters room was demolished while he was asleep kept me focused on moving along to the next chapter.
This reprint by ibooks features a funny and entertaining new afterword by JMS in which he describes why he wrote the novel and how it came to be published. The style of the novel reminds me of Stephen King crossed with Dan Simmons, William F. Nolan and with a dash of Peter Straub thrown in. It's clear that he wrote the novel to entertain himself but also as a tribute of sorts to the contemporary horror novelist he enjoys reading.
"Demon Night" compares favorably with the best horror ficition written by Simmons, Straub and King and has a minor flaw that is characteristic of King's novels; with such a great set up and pay off, JMS doesn't quite know how to end the novel with the original band it deserves. That's o.k. as the point of the novel isn't the destination so much as the journey and sights we see along the way.
Book Description
Demons of the Night is a trove of haunting fiction—a gathering, for the first time in English, of the best nineteenth-century French fantastic tales. Featuring such authors as Balzac, Mérimée, Dumas, Verne, and Maupassant, this book offers readers familiar with the works of Edgar Allan Poe and E. T. A. Hoffman some of the most memorable stories in the genre. With its aura of the uncanny and the supernatural, the fantastic tale is a vehicle for exploring forbidden themes and the dark, irrational side of the human psyche.
The anthology opens with "Smarra, or the Demons of the Night," Nodier's 1821 tale of nightmare, vampirism, and compulsion, acclaimed as the first work in French literature to explore in depth the realm of dream and the unconscious. Other stories include Balzac's "The Red Inn," in which a crime is committed by one person in thought and another in deed, and Mérimée's superbly crafted mystery, "The Venus of Ille," which dramatizes the demonic power of a vengeful goddess of love emerging out of the pagan past. Gautier's protagonist in "The Dead in Love" develops an obsessive passion for a woman who has returned from beyond the grave, while the narrator of Maupassant's "The Horla" imagines himself a victim of psychic vampirism.
Joan Kessler has prepared new translations of nine of the thirteen tales in the volume, including Gérard de Nerval's odyssey of madness, "Aurélia," as well as two tales that have never before appeared in English. Kessler's introduction sets the background of these tales—the impact of the French Revolution and the Terror, the Romantics' fascination with the subconscious, and the influence of contemporary psychological and spiritual currents. Her essay illuminates how each of the authors in this collection used the fantastic to articulate his own haunting obsessions as well as his broader vision of human experience.
Customer Reviews:
Great translations of spooky tales.......2003-04-17
Kessler's translations of these French stories are an invaluable treasure to the English speaking community. Many of these stories have never been translated or were out of print for many, many years. Kessler gives them new life in this collection that will appease both francophiles and lovers of spooky stories.
Great thanks to Kessler.......2002-04-09
I was lucky enough to read this book in a class on 19th Century French Lit. taught by Joan Kessler herself. I have never forgotten these stories or the depth of psychological exploration each presents. This amazing book brings the genre of 19th French Macabre to non-French readers for the first time. Each story is truly classic, all at once an original and the obvious predecessor of horror and psychological thrillers as we know them today. Fans of Poe will love this book, and fans of King will be delighted by these twisted tales, though they may need to keep a dictionary handy.
Ms. Kessler's notes are the perfect guide through each work. She places each story in it's own history, giving ample insight into the mindset of the authors and their audiences.
From beginning to end this book will keep your heart pumping. It is the perfect read for those who have a hard time finding great work. It will keep you up at night, if not out of interest, then out of terror.

Where Two Worlds Touch.......2000-03-26
I have read this book a thousand time. The pages are getting dog-eared and the margins are full of notes. I was really hoping that Glorida Karpinski had written another soul revealing book. But it would be hard to top this fabulously insightfull exploration of the human experience.
Inner Changes.......2000-03-18
For me, I have come to the conclusion after reading this wonderful book, that all I have to do is relax. Everything and everyone who are in my life are in it for a specific purpose. This book also helped me realize that the journey is just as important as the goal. I wish Gloria would write another book, she is a wonderful author. I hope she realizes how much she has helped so many people. Thankyou Gloria.
This book changed my life's course.......2000-02-01
I found this magical book in the used books section of a bookstore, read it, and was transformed by its wisdom. I'll never part with it. God love you, Gloria! I wish you'd write another book, wherever you are... And to the reader who asks why this book is out of print, well, the other day I saw it in the metaphysical section of Borders and so wonder if it's been revived?
If you were to choose only one book to read............1999-11-02
I first read this book 5 years ago and it made so much sense of my then senseless world! I just re-read it this past week and was amazed to see how much of the wisdom in this book I had incorporated into my life, the positive affects it has had on me, and that there was more to learn that I did not get the first time around! You will want to read it again and again. This is a MUST HAVE book for anyone who wants to understand the turmoil in their life and how spiritual growth happens. I would also recommend it to those in healing practices and counsiling. A great gift!!! Yes... I want to see this book available again!
