Other compatibility issues include anger management, sexual passion, and family planning.

Helpful and solid.......2007-07-18
Although I normally avoid this kind of book, I found this one to be very helpful...so much so, that I've ordered copies for two people who wanted to borrow my copy (because I didn't want mine to disappear).
Although some reviewers of this book have complained that it "seemed like an ad for eharmony" I felt that the discussion of the research that went into the development of the 29 dimensions provided the evidence I needed and gave the balance of the book credibility. If you are a cut-to-the-chase person, skip the first 50 pages, but if you have a skeptical and analytical bent, you will find the initial discussion helpful in weighing what they have to say about each dimension as they go through the remainder of the book. They don't really pull punches and their breakdown of the dimensions into categories was very helpful. It really helps to clarify what's being "too picky" and what's holding out for the right relationship.
Incidentally, there is stuff in here that no one I know ever thought was important to be matched on, but that I watch friends struggle over in their relationships and didn't understand why.

Neil wrote a fine book with good advice. The most helpful section was the first screening dimension: Good Character. "Character matters!"
My own and others' horrific experiences with eHarmony (passive aggressive and/or nonexistent customer service, fraudulent guarantees, questionable "matching" practices, low number of matches--zero globally for many weeks!, and charlatan billing practices), lead me to believe that Neil's company suffers from bad character.
Let us follow Neil's advice: "Watch out for signs that reveal a diminished sense of conscience. People who willfully and regularly lie, exaggerate, or cheat have no regard for the rights of others. They will pay little attention to how their actions impact you, as long as they get what they want....A person with a character disorder has mastered the art of putting on a facade of social acceptability. He knows how to gain your confidnece and that of other people. The person with a character disorder is often a smooth talker, a charmer, a person who knows how to say just the right thing to get what he wants."
Neil, eHarmony can change for the better if you genuinely want it to and are willing to do the tough work to see change happen. But we realize that the prognosis for bad character is not good. Only three experiences seem to bring any real change--a stint in prison, serving in the military, or a deep spiritual transformation. We hope the people at eHarmony will be helped by at least one of these experiences.
Folks, if you encounter eHarmony, run--don't walk--away from it as fast as you can. It will not get better with time.
Didn't read the book, but..........2007-01-11
I never read the book, but I have been on e-harmony for 6 months. They were sending me matches the first 2 weeks, but most of "matches" were not responding at all or the people were totally the opposite of me. I manage to meet one single girl out of there in 6 months and as soon as we met we started to laugh because we were so different, that even a stranger could say we weren't a match.
I called e-harmony several times to cancel my membership and have some refund, but they only agreed to prolong my membership without additional expenses. I didnt get ANY matches in the following 6 months, even though I WAS ACCEPTING MATCHES FROM THE ENTIRE USA!!! I calle dagain just to hear excuses.
Now, every time I see the ad on the TV...I just laugh. dont subscribe to these people, its not worth of it. Oh and by the way, I sold the book on ebay for $11.50. Total loss, total waste of time and money.

I especially appreciated Dr. Warren's comments and reflections on character. It is so important. The book is genuine, reads well, and held my attention. He knows what he is talking about. It is thorough and clear.

I do life coaching and public speaking for a living, including in the areas of relationship and sexuality. I have read a lot of books on both of these topics and was very pleasantly surprised that this was a solidly written book and not just a lot of hype.
One of the things I most liked about this book was the emphasis on character. Dr. Warren was very direct about what constitutes good character, the likely outcome of dating people with characters disorders and the pivotal importance of being authentic and not dating people who lie.
The author also stressed the importance of compatibility. A lot of people work too hard at relationship because fundamentally, they are not compatible. If they were, things would go a lot easier. There is a section in the book that breaks down compatibility into a number of different dimensions that I thought were an extremely useful lens for people to use when looking for a serious partner.
I also liked the sections on sex and the healthy expression of sexuality. Dr. Warren points out that premature sexuality can often blind you to character faults and compatibility issues. While this is difficult to swallow for a lot of people, it sure seems to be true. He also talks about the importance of sex and sexual compatibility from a space of someone with a lot of experience counseling couples.
The appendices in the book are just as valuable as the text. I particularly liked his sections on the "must haves" and "can't haves." When many people are dating, they are not conscious of what their non-negotiables are and enter into relationship where there are a lot of good things, but one essential ingredient is missing. This is a very seductive dynamic, especially when the beginning of the relationship feels soooo good. However, it's like missing one essential vitamin; it will eventually catch up with you.
Also, there is a great no nonsense section on sexual chemistry. Dr. Warren doesn't side step this important area and he makes it very clear that this is what separates potential friends from potential partners. According to him, there must be sexual chemistry and you either have it or you don't. Without sexual chemistry, people often end up having affairs or feeling guilty that they are not attracted to their partners.
Overall, this book posits a conservative approach to dating. Many people won't be able to live up to all the advice, but the advice is sound and it makes good psychological sense. Some people will find the advice on sex overly conservative, but as adults we need to draw our own lines between the ideal and what is reasonable for ourselves. We don't necessarily have to embody the gold standard, but we can certainly aspire to it.
Another interesting part of this book was the section that stepped through each part of the traditional marriage vows and talked about what each means. The take away point, was not that you just promise to stay together, it's that you promise to do the work to love, honor and respect each other. This section which contained a lot of commentary was a useful reminder of examining your deep intention before taking a walk down the aisle with someone. Sometimes people think when they are just staying together they are keeping their vows, but Dr. Warren points to something more than this as truly living your commitment. I thought this was a good point to make, although in practice I believe that sometimes divorce is the best course for some people. On the other hand, I like that he emphasized that marriage isn't something to be entered into lightly and either is a serious relationship.
Dr. Warren talks a lot about eHarmony in his book and this can sometimes be annoying. I have never tried eHarmony or even looked at it in-depth online. However, whether that website is good or not, the book certainly is, so don't let any impressions you have of eHarmony get in the way of seriously evaluating this book.
In short, the advice in this book is good to keep on your radar with the understanding that life isn't perfect and ideals are often difficult to live up to. Even if you disagree with Dr. Warren, his words are good food for thought and you will at least have a heightened awareness of the trade-offs inherent to less conservative dating approaches.
This is not a book geared toward casual dating or casual sex. The audience is clearly people who are very serious about finding a lifelong partner. If you fall in that category, you can't go wrong. Another good book that complements this one is WILL OUR LOVE LAST by Sam Hamburg.
I don't agree with everything this author says and I don't think he factors in enough compassion for the human condition and the challenges of modern life, especially around getting needs for intimacy and sexuality met. However, there is a lot of wisdom here and anyone can benefit from it.
A problem of the modern world is that it's more complex to find a match than ever and it takes longer because people are more complicated and life is more demanding. While Dr. Warren gives excellent dating advice, he doesn't address how to meet your intimacy and sexual needs while you are involved in a lengthy search for a good partner. Let's face it; the kind of great partners that Dr. Warren is asking us to hold out for don't grow on trees. I wish he wrote section on friends, social support and other coping strategies for what to do in the meantime.

The Best Romance Novel I Have Ever Read!.......2002-01-11
True to the title of my review- I will claim this awesome novel to be absolutely the best romance novel I have ever laid eyes upon. I have read several, meaning many, other romance books but this is much ahead of the others. The characters are so well developed and true to form that when you're reading the book, you feel so close to them, almost a part of them. You want them to love, you want them to realize, you want to be them... you want to help them. All characters have a conflict of their own. The brothers, and the sisters themselves. They are all individuals.
I loved this book so much. And the storyline is so strong. It definitely makes it difficult to put this book down. I read it and re- read it several times. If you only read one romance novel in your whole life- this should be the one.
It is so satisfying to the core of your being. You will feel so happy in the end because the ending is so deserving of all characters but at the same time you'll be sad the novel has ended. I loved Alex and especially Adrian's character- so rich in past and present pain and love.
This book is fabulous! If possible, I would give it a 10 out of 5. Loved it, loved it!

For All The Right Reasons.......2000-01-06
Words come so easliy to me, but when asked to talk about this novel I can't find the words to justify it's greatness. I get teased alot for reading "CHEAP" romance novels. But this book is in no way cheap. It's a tender love story that will live with me forever. One cannot help but fall in love with the charecters from page one. I could not put this book down. I read every chance I had. This was the first Elaine Coffman book I ever read and I have to say it is in no way the last. In Elaine's books the emphasies is not so much sex, desire or grand adventures, but love plain and simple. After falling in love with Alex and Kathrine I could not read another book till I read every one of the brothers stories. I tried to read other books but I couldn't which is so odd for me. I now have read Alex, Ross and Adrians' stories and I just began Nick's. I want to get across to all the other lovers of stories that if you pass up this book or any other books from this seires you are not just passing up a book but an experience.

I can only say it was well worth waiting for! Only Elaine Coffman could take such a difficult story to write, and do it with such emotion and charm. The characters are witty, human, and very real. You get a story about two sisters, Katherine and Karin, who are in love with the same man, Alexander Mackinnon. Alex foolishly fancies himself in love with Karin, when anyone could see it is Katherine who has substance. To complicate matters further, Alex's twin brother, Adrian, is in love with Katherine. How it all is resolved leads to a fine, satisfying read. It isn't a book you read and forget about, but one that will linger in your mind long after you've put the book away. This isn't a romance novel. This is an unforgettable love story about people you come to care about because they are real.

In a way, this collection reminds me a bit of "My Dinner With Andre," in that it also examines life from many angles, often through tiny details & absurd situations, while leaving the reader with much food for thought afterwards. It's also fascinating as a chronicle of the growth of the artist, following his work from its earliest days through nearly two decades. Enjoyable from the first, it grows in subtlety with the passage of time, delving into more serious material without losing its charm or sense of humor. Additionally, it's a delight to watch his development as an artist -- it's just amazing how much feeling he can put into the deceptive simplicity of his work!
I see that this is listed as Volume 1, so I can only hope that Volume 2 will be coming along eventually. Glenn Dakin is good company, a fine storyteller, and he'll leave you both amused & a bit wiser for the time spent with him. Highly recommended!

This is just a great collection of comics from Glenn Dakin. It's cool to read about a cartoon character with such down to earth thoughts and feelings. If your curiosity has gotten you far enough to read this review, I would definitely recommend giving the book a shot.

This little known book will be the last help book u need.......2004-05-11
I bought this book used for ten cents as a joke. I collect "funny" titles of self help books aimed at women, mostly published in the 80's. "Men who hate women, themselves and the world and the women that adore them" type titles, which can get very baroque. Anyway, I happened to browse through the book one day, and it changed my life. I kid you not. These two women psychologists developed a system and an understanding of pattern relationships that is so completely relevant, easy to understand and follow and absolutely life changing that I can't recommend this book enough. I felt chills as I went through their series of questions, and with a little work and analysis, could clearly see a specific and detailed pattern of "sharing" men that had never been evident to me or anyone else who saw me go through one unsatisfying relationship after another. There are several patterns dissected and charted and they are very different, and arise from different sets of childhood circumstances. I felt chills as I truely viewed my relationships objectively for the first time, and knew I had the power to say no to that set of characteristics when it appeared again, which is part of how they recommend breaking the pattern. This was about 3 years ago. I am now 40 and in the best relationship of my life, and on my way to the alter with a man who treats me with love, devotion and respect. Thank you so much to these authors, I don't know who you are or where you are, but you deserve much praise and recognition for your work.
Most helpful book I ever read regarding personal insight........2003-06-13
When I read this book, I was 23 years old. I was in a doomed relationship of 2 years, and wanted out. I was sick to death of failed relationships and since I had a child to think of, did not want another failure. I didnt want my failures to affect my (male) child and give him a warped view of how relationships worked. I read this book and found a chapter that showed me EXACTLY what patterns my relationships were following, and not only did it explain WHY I was making these mistakes, but it had helpful suggestions on how to BREAK these patterns. I followed its advice, found a man who loved me unconditionally, had enough patience to let me work through some of my "baggage", and we have been together ever since. We have been together for 15+ years and married over 13 years. I credit this book with bringing these important issues to my attention and helping me to break the cycle of failure in my relationships. I cannot tell you how happy I have been all these years. Highly recommended book.

This was the first novel that I read by Janice Sims. Overall it was enjoyable, however, I felt the love story between Georgie and Clay was lacking. There were so many things going on and so many characters being introduced that it was a bit confusing at times. I felt that Georgie and Clay's relationship was being overshadowed by the reunion of Georgie's mom and dad. I became much more interested in her parents relationship than I did with her own. I also feel that Sims did not spend enough time focusing on Georgie and Clay's romance.
Although I have yet to read "A Second Chance For Love," which is a continuation of this novel, I think I will like it better than this one. If you ask me, she could have combined both stories into one book, focusing on Toni and Charles's (Georgie's parents) romance.
A Great Book!.......2000-12-27
"All the Right Reasons" is another great book Janice Sims has written. Clay Knight and Georgie Shaw make a lovely couple. Clay, a private investigator, is hired by Charles Waters, to find what Mr. Waters thinks is his child. However, a surprise awaits Mr. Waters when not one, but two adult children surface.
The plot thickens not only with the discovery of the twins, but also when Clay realizes that someone is out to murder Georgie. However, that someone is set to not only destroy Georgie, but must destroy Georgie's twin sister, Bree in order to get what the murderer wants.
Toni Shaw, Georgie and Bree's mother, and Charles Waters (Chuck) lover years ago is forced to protect her children in any way possible. Toni must confront Chuck after years of separation, but will the confrontation also bring to surface Toni's undying feelings of love? A love that was never buried even though Toni thought Chuck had neglected her in a time of need years ago. Toni must now confront all of her feelings for all the right reasons -- those for her children as well as to put a close to a past that held deep love and a future that still has love in it for Chuck. Those feelings of love are not only from Toni, but Chuck must also realize his feelings and what he gave up years ago.
"All the Right Reasons" has suspense and romance. Also, there is a story in itself with Toni Shaw and Charles Waters. "All The Right Reasons" is a great book!
Janice Sims Has Another Hit!.......2000-04-29
Janice Sims has a way with words as she writes this romance, adventure, murder mystery novel. She seems to be able to craft a story of romance with the twists of excitement of adding mystery. This is what we get, Toni Shaw, mother of twin daughters, Charles Waters, Toni's ex-lover and father of the twins, and Clayton Knight the private investigator. So with these major characters we get lots of humor, serious unresolved issues, major love sparks and some dangerous murder attempts. All this wraps up to be one good book that is worth every bit of time you give to read it all. I just have one problem with this book, it leaves us with so many unresolved answers to what happens to the major characters. But then again, I guess we just have to patiently wait for Janice Sims to give us a sequel to find out! If you like Janice Sims, check out some of these other published books of hers I truly enjoyed: A Bittersweet Love, For Keeps, Out of the Blue, Love Letters and Affair of the Heart.
Romance and DangerýA Chilling Combination!.......1999-11-23
Georgie Shaw's world is turned upside down the minute her mother introduces her to Clayton Knight. All of a sudden Georgie becomes the target of a hired hit man. Then Georgie and her twin sister, Briane, learn the truth about the father they never knew. But things really get heated up when Georgie finds herself in the protective arms of Mr. Clay "Knight In Shining Armor".
This tale is full of suspense. But, the action flows so fast you won't have time to bite your nails! And if the hunt and chase is not enough to keep your heart pounding...the attraction between Georgie and her man Clay most definitely will!
Once again, Ms. Sims uses a strong loving family as a backdrop for her story. True to her literary form, Ms. Sims develops all of her characters very well - even the household staff. The scene between the household cook and the killer will have you rolling! I also like the fact that the ladies in this story are not those faint-hearted, "Owww, I twisted my ankle" kind of women.
Janice Sims does it again. All The Right Reasons is the fourth Janice Sims novel that I've read, and as always I was completely drawn in! Great job Ms. Sims. Keep'em Coming! Now that things have settled down, I'd like to know what happens to Toni and Chuck too.

This book had a lot of twist and surprises. I believe the story was well thought out and Ms. Sims is an excellent writer.

This book's strength is that it places Lincoln's faith in the context of the monumental events that affected his life. However, it is a basic book with a minimal bibliography that retells stories that most Lincoln researchers know well. It tells the story in a conversational tone, and would make an excellent book report for a Christian high school history class, but I would not recommend it for serious research on the topic. In preparing for a presentation on Lincoln and his relationship with God, I found Lincoln on God and Country by Gordon Leidner and Michael Burlingame to be a much better reference.
THE RELIGIOUS SIDE OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN.......2007-01-25
This book examines the religious and spiritual side of Abraham Lincoln in depth and I really enjoyed reading this book. This book is a must for any historian, history teacher, or history enthuiast. This book is excellent, easy to understand, and is well-written. After reading this book, I donated it to a local supermarket for Juvenille Diabetes Research, and it was gone the next day. ENJOYED IT IMMENSENLY.
Examining the religious side of Abraham Lincoln.......2004-12-28
Abraham Lincoln has proven to be somewhat of an enigma for many historians. A person who seemed to embrace the Christian religion he was nevertheless a person who never joined a church. Although some sources state that he never attended church the records of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington show that he attended there regularly during his presidential years. For many the ultimate determination of his religious leanings are based on his actions, his words, and the writings of his close friend Charles Carleton Coffin who states that a spiritual crisis in 1841 was the turning point in Lincoln's life and resulted in his embracing Christianity.

Lincoln's strong reliance on God's guidance and the Bible shows throughout the book as you read an account of his life that focuses not on politics, but on belief. Wonderful and engaging.......2004-06-19
Wyrick has authored a wonderful examination of the spirituality of one of American history's most devoutly religious Presidents. This book is a very pleasant and readable book that has a rich depth of information.
I recommend it for the person who is a teacher or student of history, as the book gives insight into the spiritual aspect of Lincoln.
I recommend it for the religious person who has no historical background. Wyrick gives enough historical background for the non-historian to enjoy the book.

This reprint of the sole extant copy of a tract published in 1852, which was probably but not certainly given to Abraham by Mary Todd, is inof itself an excellent daily devotional. Unlike many contemporary devotionals, the commentary after the daily passage is brief, to the point, and timeless. Carl Sandberg's prolog provides us with some further information about Lincon's faith.
