Not up to par for WH40K novels........2007-05-30
For some reason I just wasn't enthralled by this story as I have been with other WH40K titles I've read. A number of things about this book didn't settle well with me. Deviating from some of the history and standards set up for the WH40K world is somewhat annoying but ultimately a minor complaint. My primary gripe has to do with Bayley's writing style. A number of times I found myself loosing interest and forgetting what I had just read half way through paragraphs. I blame this on the writing, with sentence structure and wording not flowing very smoothly, resulting in a broken feeling. This was somewhat surprising for me because Bayley is a fairly accomplished author. Maybe I had too-high expectations because of that. Regardless, this in addition to the many editorial mistakes, resulted in a much less-enjoyable read.
The story is made up of three separate storylines that all come together at the very end of the book. The primary one follows a rogue trader on his quest to find rare and valuable merchandise in worlds surrounding the Eye of Terror (some sort of gateway into the Warp). Another focuses on a couple of chaos daemons and their plans to attack the Empire. The third follows the somewhat crazy-seeming commander of a naval battlefleet who wishes for glory and plans an invasion of the Warp. These three complex storylines include a number of very interesting characters and places that should have lead to a very interesting read. Unfortunately, it seems Bayley bit off more than he could chew with so many different things going on at the same time that the end result is a confusion of highly unlikely events taking place all the same time and an ending that leaves you off right where you started. Bayley's view of the Emperor and his power contradicts that of other authors. Tech-adepts fixing mechanical problems of warp engines by simply painting archaic symbols and reciting prays to the Emperor just doesn't feel right. Also, his portrayal of the Empire as a rather weak and extremely bleak consortium is unappealing.
Maybe I'm a bit too harsh on this one, but IMHO its not really worth your effort.
A competant variation minor work on WH40K theme.......2005-06-24
I'd actually have liked to give it 3.5 stars, as this is better than 3 stars yet not quite four stars. IMHO this is the next best novel in the WH40K universe, second only to Ian Watson's excellent standard-setting INQUISITOR and SPACE MARINE. In case anyone is not familiar to the WH40K universe theme, the future of mankind in the forty-first millenium is a galactic human empire beset on all fronts by demon infestation (''Chaos''). The Emperor is some sort of psychic god on earth - half-dead, conscious only by din of sheer force of willpower sustained by technology - presiding over a huge Theocratic empire spanning lightyears, the ecclesiastical structure employing deadly force and ruthless subterfuge to protect human race against being overwhelmed by demonic contamination. Imagine the Spanish Inquisition ruling a galactic empire. The imaginative vista is panoramic, sweeping and jaw-dropping. The opportunities for good yarn-spinning is enormous:- this is a cross between the Spanish Inquisition and Isaac Asimov's galactic empire, only this time the Inquisitors are the good guys trying to keep humanity, well, human. The opportunities for good yarn-spinning is enormous, and Ian Watson and Barrington J Bayley carries off the story-telling challenge with great polish and panache. I generally enjoy WH40K stories immensely, and Ian Watson and Barrington J Bayley are IMHO two of the best WH40K authors to see the light thus far. Go for it! You'll be hugely entertained.
Best wh40k book out there.......2003-07-25
A very original story that describes chaos in a very interesting and colorful way; From its followers to its worlds and artefacts. While reading you get the impression that too many new story lines are established to deal with in a single book, but in the end it all comes together. It deals with the lowliest imperial and choas servants upto the mightiest demons, and even the emperor himself!
The great eye of terror........2003-04-03
The great eye of terror is 3 individual stories that entre twine for a great twist finally. Like Space Wolf, this book is a WH40K exception, it can be appreciated by someone who doesnýt know what Terra is, to the hard core fan, who know what kind of plant Ragnar Blackmane smoke.
Itýs a great way to discover the WH40K universe. The book will show the way of life of the peoples behind the scene of the war in the WH40K universe. It also has a humorist touch (like Space Wolf) that makeýs it fun and enjoyable to read, and the suspense will make you read the book at 3 am, when you should be sleeping, but you wont be able to, since the book is all whatýs on youýre mind.
Some ýreal bigý fans are complaining about a few choices the author made that is not ýrespectingý the WH40K universe to the hair. I would like to say that the WH40K universe is fiction and flawed to begin with, why are they giving a hard time at the author for his personal touch the WH40K universe. It is fiction, but for these fans itýs real life, and they see a little modification, and it shake theyýre faith in the great WH and they donýt like this.
But for anyone who know the difference between life and fiction, itýs a nice and enjoyable novel, I highly recommend it to peoples looking at buying their first novel, along with Space Wolf.
Something Very Original!.......2002-11-24
This is a great read. The story doesn't follow the Warhammer universe perfectly BUT it is Warhammer that is very original and very fun to read. It has more subtle depth then most Warhammer stories. If you aren't careful you'll miss the point that different people living their own lives totally seperate from each other can still effect each other and events around them through what seems like totally random action-with little nudges from Chaos and the Emperor that is. That gives it a random feel as though it is a bunch of short stories tossed together. However it all makes sense in the end if you are paying attention. Manipulations within manipulations. The author does a great job of living up to that.

In 2004, internationally known physicist Haim Harari was invited to address the advisory board of a major multinational corporation. This is a penetrating analysis of the components of terror. The book offers a survey of the landscape of middle-eastern conflicts. It is, however, not a pedantic rendition. The author presents a complicated issue in an easily understandable form.

In April 2004 internationally known physicist Haim Harari was asked by a meeting of the International Advisory Board of a large multi-national corporation to present his own personal view on events in the Middle East. He spoke candidly.
Without his knowledge a copy of his remarks was leaked and posted on the Internet. It caused a worldwide sensation and was translated into more than half a dozen languages. Due to the widespread interest in the article, Prof. Harari went on to write an expanded version, which resulted in "A View from The Eye of The Storm". This is not a scholarly treatise with bibliography and footnotes (although there is a very good index), but the perceptions of a fifth-generation Israeli-born observer. Yet Harari is no ordinary observer. He is a brilliant scientist, trained in objective and precise analysis. And he is a man not only of great acumen and scruples, but a man deeply concerned about human events and the future of humankind.
Prof. Harari believes we are already into a World War with Muslim Extremists, but that a few more years may pass before everybody acknowledges this is a fact. He outlines four main elements of the present World conflict: 1, suicide murder; 2, lies; 3, money and 4, the total breakdown of law. The role of each of these elements is examined in detail in the 211 page book.
Following is Harai's eminently sensible solution to the Israeli-Palestine conflict:
"There are certain immutable facts in the Middle East. Peace can arrive only if the Palestinians except the existence of Israel. Peace can materialize only if the Palestinians have their own state - next to Israel not instead of it. The densely Jewish areas will be part of Israel; the densely Palestinian areas will be part of the Palestinian state. Israel will have an Arab minority. Many Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Gaza will have to be abandoned. Most of Jerusalem will remain in Israel, and it will continue to be the capital city. Some heavily populated Arab neighborhoods of the greater Jerusalem area will be in the Palestinian state and may form its capitol city. A carefully planned demilitarized strategy must be developed; it will take a substantial number of years and can be lifted only by mutual consent. Descendents of Palestinian refugees will be settled in Arab countries, many of them in the Palestinian state. All Arab countries bordering with Israel will have peace agreements with it, and no unresolved disputes will remain. The borders between Israel and its Arab neighbors will be protected by some kind of fence...because no open border can survive a 20:1 income ratio."
Later in the book Harari provides a concise prescription for treating the problem of international terror. He admits "it's easy to list these things...it's far more difficult to apply them worldwide." But "it's just a matter of time until all free countries unite and recognize they are facing a life-threatening, global problem."
Read this book, and you will learn the clear-headed professor's answers - answers that he urges are "simply the only possible solutions" to the international terror of our present World War.
A Gem of a book, deep, compelling, intelligent, fascinating.......2006-10-05
Haim Harari is a great internationally known theoretical physicist. He was the director of the Weizmann Institute from 1988 to 2001 and received important honors as a leading scientist, including the prestigious Harnack Medal, awarded by the Senate of the Max Planck Society in an unanimous decision.
But this book is not about Physics, its about terror and reason in the Middle East. In my opinion, it is by far the best review of terrorism ever written.
Harari is a fifth generation Israeli. His grandmother was born in Jerusalem in 1872, and so was her grandmother. So where his children and grandchildren. He writes in Chapter 1:
"For seven generations we have lived here, in the eye of the storm. We have survived more wars and terror attacks than any other nation. But now we are informed by the former French ambassador to London that we are "a shitty little country" endangering the world; at the same time we learn that the rulers of Iran want to replace our "shitty little country" by yet another Shiite country.
So writes this gifted and deep observer of the reality of the Midle East today. Every page of this book has deep and extremely intelligent observations, whose truth is undeniable. Harari's reasoning is always compelling, like that of any great scientist. He starts each one of the 32 chapters of this extraordinary book with a short citation. These themselves are little gems. For example here is the gem that starts Chapter 30: "You cannot punish a suicide murderer by [the] death penalty; You cannot bomb into the Stone Age somebody who is already there."
Indeed, the war between radical Islam and the West is waged by people yearning to go back to the past. They reject modernity above all.
Or here is the gem starting Chapter 13: " The incredible economy of China creates an entirely new "South Korea" every three years. Why can't the rest of the poor rural areas of the world do the same?"
World War III already started though many people do not realize it yet. A relatively new totalitarian movement has grown and gained roots in the Middle East, financed by Saudi Arabia, Iran and other oil-rich states. Like the totalitarian regimes of the past, whether in Mao's China , Stalin's Soviet Union, Pol Pot's Cambodia, Hitler's Nazi Germany, fascist Italy, or Tojo's Japan, the adherents of this Islamic form of fascism are prepared to kill a large part of Humanity in order to bring forth the Islamic "paradise" that is supposed to triumph in the entire World. All fascists, it seems, are megalomaniacs, and the new Islamic fascists are no different.
This book is living proof that the pen is mightier than the sword, and a potent weapon against the Islamic totalitarians of today in World War III. Just like Nazi Germany, fascist Italy, Tojo's Japan, Pol Pot's Cambodia, or Stalin's Soviet Union were defeated, ultimately reason will win over this new form of religious fascism and barbarism. World War III already started, but the victors are going to be the same ones as the victors in World War II.
This book is highly recommended. It should be read and reread by every thinking person on Earth.

At last an unbiased intelligent analysis of the situation in the middle east and the events that brought to that situation. A must read for anyone interested in world affairs.
A Must Read.......2005-05-29
Haim Harari, the proverbial taxi driver, helps others to reason on mid-east events and history. PREREQUISITE: The reader is required to have at least enough sense God gave a goose. How Harari thinks this situation will be brought to a successful resolution is contrary to what he developed in the body. He feels men will suddenly defy their hundreds-of-years old track record and work this situation out either by negotiation or by the after-management of a man-made horrifying event.
He forgot this:
(Daniel 2:44) "And in the days of those kings (the ones that are ruling at the end times) the God of heaven will set up a kingdom (government) that will never be brought to ruin. And the kingdom itself will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite;.."

Egyptian Christianity:
The Christians of Egypt, called the Copts, a corrupted Greek word for Egyptians, used by the nomadic Arab invaders, have a tragic but very fascinating history. Their significance to Western culture and Christian faith has gained momentum, in the last decades after the discovery of the Coptic Gnostic Library of Chenoboskion, near today's city of Nag Hammadi, in upper Egypt.

Stories from the Past:
Jill recounts Coptic folklore fables, they keep telling their sons and daughters from generation to generation, and stories held dear to their hearts, that centuries away created those marvelous legends in the Gnostic Gospel of the Childhood, and according to the Egyptians. In her introduction she defended very articulately the case for setting the record straight about the same deficiency-bias ,'associated with Europe's view of Europe itself at the time...{and} the colonial attitude led to a resistance against providing Egyptians with information on their own past'
Epilogue:
' Ancient Egyptian theology, despite its apparent diversity and growing complexity with the passage of time, remained remarkably uniform throughout the 3,000 years of ancient history. It was closely connected with the Egyptian's conception of his world -- the universe was essentially static; the social order was part of the cosmic order, and the central figure was the king, whose acts were those of a god not a human being.' Amazing!
