Book Description
For two weeks in 1861, Washington, D.C., was locked in a state of panic. Would the newly formed Confederate States of America launch its first attack on the Union by capturing the nation's capital? Would Lincoln's Union fall before it had a chance to fight?
Wedged between Virginia and Maryland-- two states bordering on secession--Washington was isolated; its communications lines were cut, its rail lines blocked. Newly recruited volunteers were too few and were unable to enter the city. A recently inaugurated Lincoln struggled to form a plan-- defense or attack? Intelligence rumors and incendiary headlines revealed Norfolk and Harpers Ferry fallen to rebels, and the notorious "mobtown" Baltimore ignited by riots.
David Detzer pulls the drama from this pivotal moment in American history straight from the pages of diaries, letters, and newspapers. With an eye for detail and an ear for the voices of average citizens, he beautifully captures the tense, miasmic atmosphere of these first chaotic days of war.

Disappointing.......2007-08-14
The author's obvious feelings as to the relative merits of the North and South justifications for conflict heavily color the narrarative. Also my taste does not run to the many "what if" scenarios included. I gave 2 stars instead of fewer since a book on this subject was long overdue.
Another Detzer Hit.......2007-03-30
His newest book may be the best. Everything you wanted to know about the in between days of the early civil war. This is an area typically skipped by most historians. Excellent treatment.
Excellent.......2006-06-09
April of 1865 has been referred to as the month that saved America but April of 1861 may have been just as vital if not more so. It was during this time that Washington DC sat completely surrounded by two states that were teetering on the verge of secession. Once Virginia did leave the Union only Maryland provided the federal government with a connection to the rest of the nation and it was a tenuous connection at best.
Abraham Lincoln was clearly out of his league in this early stage of the game and he leaned heavily on General Winfield Scott. For his part, Scott was keenly aware of the danger facing Washington and began to immediately call for any militia units that could get to DC quickly from loyal northern states. The problem was that these militia units would have to travel through Maryland, a slave state that might well consider these Yankee troops to be invaders and could easily be pushed into the Confederacy by such an affront to state sovereignty. It was also distinctly possible that these militia units might be attacked by not only the people of Maryland but also ultimately by the state militia.
In the meantime Virginia forces had seized the federal armory at Harper's Ferry and the Gosport navy yard near Hampton Virginia. Rumors are rampant in DC that the Virginia militia that had taken Harper's Ferry was preparing to move on Washington and many in the Federal City were in a state of panic.
The questions that arise from this drama involve the decision making process on both sides and the ultimate question is of course whether Washington DC was ever in any real danger. Did the Confederacy in fact lose it's only real chance for ultimate victory during this time period? David Detzer has done an admirable job in this book of not only bringing this evolving drama to life but also of answering these questions in a clear and concise manner.
This book reads much like a great historical drama and the author's writing style is superbly readable. It is rare for the author of a history book to achieve such a sense of drama since the reader usually already knows the outcome. Detzer has accomplished this however and although I was keenly aware of what was about to happen at every turn I had a tough time putting the book down. This invigorating writing style is often derisively referred to as popular history but Detzer blows the sides off of that old mold by not only offering new information but also keen observations that cut directly to the heart of this eventful period of American history. No hero of American history is spared criticism when criticism is due and conversely even Ben Butler is praised when his actions merit it.
This is the story of those fateful days of April and May of 1861 and it is a story that is well told by this supremely able author. This book is well researched, very well written and the story is told from the point of view of both governments as well as the lowliest private in the Pennsylvania militia. It is a story upon which the fate of the United States once turned.

End back cover of book.
The reader is introduced to new individuals while most characters outside of Mudge and Clothahump are given notable mentions. I found Roseroar particularly appealing as a character whereas Mudge and his occasional juvenile antics bordered on bothersome (but I still love the little otter). With a wide selection of idiosyncrasies to choose from, parallel personalities are available for every species. The ending left a huge impression on me 20 years ago and I wasn't disappointed.
As a fan of the classical, rock, and heavy metal music genres, I find the magic Jon-Tom creates with his duar exciting since I believe a well-constructed song can affect people with its intensity and power in a primal aspect.
Thank you.
Good for teenagers.......2002-04-04
I read this series for the first time as a teenager, and I have to note with some sadness that I think it's definitely lost stars for me as an adult reader.
The premise of the Spellsinger series is that an aspiring singer/lawyer (Jon-Tom) is pulled into an alternative universe where all animals except lizards can talk and think and he has magical powers as a spellsinger. But since all he knows are rock songs from our western world, his results are occasionally unpredicatable.
In this book, Jon-Tom has to go searching for medicine for his mentor Clothahump. On the way he picks up a 7-foot high white tiger, his irascable companion Mudge, and a teenage street kid named Folly. Hilarity and mayhem ensues.
The spellsinger books are light on the realism and heavy on the humor. Note that many of the jokes are dependent on knowing pop culture from the 80s. I laughed at the Def Leppard jokes. Current teens may not get them.
In vain hope I pray for more Spellsinger novels..........1999-10-27
There is a rather ludicrous sense of majesty surrounding the Spellsinger series. A sometimes comic, sometimes morbid world where the imagination of one obvious rock fan can proceed uninhibited by the averages of fantasy guidelines. Mr. Foster, accidently, I believe, created a bit of a masterpiece when he sculpted the first of the Spellsinger series, which has, all the way through it's last installment, Chorus Skating, supplied new and various dishes for those travelers on this world which the offer never bothers to identify. This book, in particular, captures the sheer ridiculousness and fun at the heart of the Spellsinger series; it's a kind of jovial feeling you sense that the characters would partake of as well, were they confronted with this astounding piece of literature. Now, all I want to know is...will there be any more? : ) I can only pray and hope!
Jon-Tom's having female problems..........1999-10-16
There are a few lyrics to the Eagle's 'Take it Easy' that would fit this book: the love of Jon-Tom's life has gotten cold feet and run off; he tries to get himself out of a jam and conjures up a seven foot tigress that's a little bit sweet on him; and he meets a pretty girl that really wants to be his friend - too bad she's jailbait! And to top it all off, Mudge gets into trouble with the ladies at every turn.
funniest one of the spellsinger series.......1998-07-09
Took me not more than two days to read it. Think I'm addicted. Characters sometimes puzzeling, nevertheless welldone. What surprised me most, was the ending. Thats the kind of humor I really like about Foster.

Errand of mercy.......2005-06-06
As will be the pattern for the rest of the series, Jon-Tom is sent off on an errand by his mentor, the wizard Clothahump, and must travel through the world accompanied by his friend Mudge, the otter woodsman. This time, Clothahump has fallen sick, and his medicine can only be obtained from a single shop of unearthly goods located across the Glittergeist Sea. Jon-Tom must travel through many weird perils along the way, solving them through creative use of his power of spellsinging -- when Jon-Tom sings, the lyrics come true.
There's a lot to recommend this novel; the characters who join Jon-Tom's "adventuring party" are a varied lot, and it makes sense that they would choose to travel with him. The story is highly episodic, and we get to see intrigue, mystery, brutality, and even a tiny touch of the sense of wonder in the previous novel, Hour of the Gate.
Unfortunately, starting with this book jokes (not humor, JOKES) begin taking precedence over story. A lot of the events seem to happen more because they might be funny than because they're interesting or advance the plot. Tellingly, the two best sections of the book -- the other ship they run across and what happens when they land in the city -- are both deadly serious in tone.
Spellsinger series book 3.......2003-11-29
This is the third installment of the spellsinger series in which our hapless hero is sent across the world in a quest to obtain....well..I don't want to give away to much. Needless to say, if you liked the first two books you'll love this one. It has all the great elements of a funny, swords and sorcery/science fiction novel. Talking animals, magic, technology and one of the best supporting characters of all time, Mudge the Otter.

This book answers the questions on birth control and child prevention.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book!!!.......2007-07-11
This book has greatly hepled my husband and I in our decision on child planning, birth control, and what God thinks about it. We have decided to trust God and let him plan how many children we'll have (we also plan to adopt more if it's His will)together. What freedom to give it all to God. My family and I have never been happier! Wonderfully inspired!
Childbearing.......2007-06-27
Love this book about God's desire for us to have and raise godly children. If we as christians don't have children then how is the Word of God going to be spread. My husband and I believe we are building an army for God. I highly recommend this book to couples.
Trust in God, But Tie Your Camel to A Tree.......2007-04-14
Another wacky tome pushing a thoughtless, selfish worldview that claims to be Christian, but is right out of the Dark Ages. No, I'm just kidding, I support her premise -- having another kid is as easy as picking up another quart of milk at the supermarket. Don't worry, be happy, if you all starve, you can blame it on God's will. Worked out great for Andrea Yates, didn't it?
Struggling with birth control, then read this!.......2007-02-07
Many have followed what the culture teaches about children. They believe there's nothing wrong with practicing birth control, especially since the Bible says nothing regarding it. Before you continue with that line of reasoning, I want to encourage you to read "Be Fruitful and Multiply." I think you will be surprised by what you read!
A very legalistic view of having children.......2006-06-03
We are a family that does not use "chemical" methods of birth control for various reasons. I was looking forward to reading this book. But I found that she took many scripture references out of context. And her views were very legalistic and almost made me feel like a horrible person for considering the timing and spacing of my children. Most of our evangelical christian family does not "like" children. So I was hoping to find a reference for them to read. But I would never recommend this book to anyone else. They would find it incredibly offensive.
A better book I have found is The Contraception Guidebook, The : Options, Risks, and Answers for Christian Couples; by William Cutter. It presents the facts in a very straight forward manner and leaves the reader to make their own decisions.

The Catholic Erma Bombeck.......2000-10-01
I enjoyed "Be Fruitful and Multiply" tremendously. Ms. Shafer has a way with words which goes beyond just describing motherhood and enters the realm of comedy. Her lighthearted view of herself and the world, as well as the Catholic faith with which she was raised, are refreshing and kept me laughing through every chapter. I recommend this book highly to anyone who wants an enjoyable few hours, regardless of whether or not they have children.

Book Description
Have you ever considered why God created you?
The Bible teaches that the principle reason God created us was to have a relationship with Him. And His design for this relationship is rooted in the first recorded words He speaks to man, "Be fruitful and multiply."
If you desire to understand God's purpose for you, a study of The First Commandment is a good place to begin. Author William H. Noah discusses how God's initial precept to be fruitful and multiply is given again and again throughout the Scripture to generations of believers. From the Garden of Eden to the parable of the sower, Noah explores the physical and spiritual meanings of fruitfulness and multiplication, as well as their role in personal intimacy with God and the spreading of the Gospel. As you discover how the True Vine can make you bear spiritual fruit that contains the seed of Christ, you will begin to experience the life you were created to live--a life of abundant, fruitful living.

If you want a closer relationship with God, GET THIS BOOK NOW! William Noah's book "The First Commandment Be Fruitful and Multiply" is also a book about real freedom. The principles he shares are the secrets of true spiritual liberty in Christ that your pastor may have been too busy to teach you.
Great read for every seeker!.......2006-01-12
The book "The First Commandment is a great read for anyone seeking a deeper walk. Loaded with scripture reference and insight into God's revelation as told by writer William Noah. Dr. Noah shows point after point of how this truth is presented from Genesis to Revelation. Much of the insight is so simple yet complex, that the reader will be saying I never saw this or I didn't realize that. If you're digging for gold (truth) this book will work well with your pick (Holy Spirit) and pan (Bible).
Sincerely,
David Dean
