The Waking Nightmare.......2007-05-20
In The Waking Nightmare Dr. Mark Sloan, Chief of Internal Medicine at Community General Hospital, is confronted with three mysteries: 1) how does he keep a cancer patient from slowly killing herself; 2) how does he solve the suicidal problems of a young woman who attempted to jump to her own death, and; 3) who murdered a millionaire skydiver in mid-jump with a knife to his chest, and how was it done. The three mysteries take charge of Dr. Sloan's life--he can't sleep (a symptom I was able to relate with), or even live a functional life until he solves each mystery to his satisfaction.
The Waking Nightmare is everything I expect of a tie-in novel. It is familiar--the characters are correct, the setting is perfect and the storyline just right. But instead of a single episode, The Waking Nightmare is more like a Diagnosis Murder mini-series. The story is longer, and the characters are developed and explained much better. Mr. Goldberg also does an admirable job of capturing the always-present humor of the television series, and the comfortable, almost homey, atmosphere. The plotting is wonderful--he twists the plot and sub-plots into an entertaining web that kept me guessing until the final pages.
My only gripe with The Waking Nightmare is that the subplots--at times--overpowered the murder mystery. In fact, when Dr. Sloan solved the mystery of the jumping girl I figured that was it. The book was over, but then in a flash I realized the skydiving murder was not only unsolved, but wasn't much closer to resolution then it had been at the beginning. Although it could be argued, and quite well, that the jumping girl is the main plot thread. It is certainly the most powerful and interesting of the three.
The Waking Nightmare proves, without a doubt, that Diagnosis Murder isn't just for the elderly. But rather Lee Goldberg has written a series of novels that can be enjoyed by anyone who wants a fun, light and pleasant mystery. Mr. Goldberg continues to build a world that is both comfortable and invigorating--it is a mix of new and old in both theme and content, and it is very much a place I would like to return.

Gravetapping: a thing for books
A Highlight .......2005-04-18
He did it again! Mr. Goldberg again topped his earlier Diagnosis Murder books, though I didn't believe this could be possible. The Waking Nightmare fascinated me to the utmost from the first to the last page.
In this book we get to know Dr. Mark Sloan in a way we never saw him before. And I like what I get to see. Mark is a human being!
The story will not allow you to put the book aside. It keeps your attention, even when you are asleep, though you should be prepared not to sleep until you finished the book. Expect the unexpected! You will not be disappointed!
A Good Dream.......2005-04-07
Another satisfying mystery in the Diagnosis Murder series. I have enjoyed them all so far, but this was definitely the weakest mystery of the bunch. There are 3 mysteries going on simultaneously, but the `thread' between them all is easy to identify. The reason this book was lacking, in my opinion, is because 2 of the people Mark was helping this time were actually alive; the books work better with a murder where Mark is actively solving something. Still, it was a light and quick read and parallels the show nicely.
Dr. Sloan faces a waking nightmare.......2005-03-24
Shortly after trying to get a cancer surviving patient to quit smoking Dr. Mark Sloan witnesses a woman attempt suicide by jumping out of her office window. The mysterious woman survives her fall, but she barely makes inside Community General before Sloan is called to the puzzling scene of an apparent murder. It seems somebody stuck a knife into the chest of parachuting adrenalin junkie Winston "Win" Brant, owner/publisher of Thrill Seeker magazine. Although Mark's detective son Steve would like his brilliant father to focus on the Brant case, Doc Sloan cannot stop thinking about the woman's attempted suicide. In fact he becomes so fixated that he cannot even sleep, his mind too busy trying to figure out something he cannot bring himself to understand. What would drive somebody to try and take their own life? Former Diagnosis Murder writer/producer Lee Goldberg has delivered another fun murder mystery. He expertly mixes together two seemingly unrelated mysteries with a touching subplot about Dr. Sloan's stubborn smoker that allow for three satisfying endings. The banter between Sloan, Steve, Jesse and Amanda (DM fans know who they are) is the funniest to date and the characters have really come to life in this new format. Highly recommended.
Not a Nightmare to Read.......2005-03-19
Mark Sloan looks out the window to see a woman jump out of the window across the street. Fortunately, she hit a tree branch on the way down and is still alive, albeit in a coma. Unfortunately, this event is haunting Mark. Every time he tries to sleep, he sees the same events playing out again and again. He must figure out why she jumped so that he can keep her from doing it again and get some sleep.
Meanwhile, Steve has a baffling case of his own and actually calls on his dad for help. Winston Brant, the publisher behind "Thrill Seeker" magazine has just been murdered. By a knife in the chest while parachuting. Obviously, this is a case that will take Mark's incredible powers of deduction.
These two cases flow well together in the book. Both were intriguing, and I found myself constantly trying to read "just a little bit more." As with the others in the series, the characters are spot on. Some of their interaction in the first part was laugh out loud funny, especially for fans of the series. There are a few character arcs taking place in these books, and I'm intrigued to see where they will go. My problem came in the last quarter. It really felt dragged out, like there was one plot twist too many. Maybe that's because I guessed much of those pages early myself.
Like the previous books, this was a fun, fast read. If you're a mystery lover, you'll enjoy it. If you'll a Diagnosis: Murder fan, you'll love it.

Be inspired and renew your energy.......2007-07-10
Megan Timothy shares a personal story of triumph and overcoming the overwhelming. In September 2003 Megan suffered a serious brain injury and was unable to communicate in any way. With her strong spirit and determination she participated in therapy and within two years was able to participate in the world and begin writing and speaking about her ordeal. The rehabilitation of your brain can be like no other, since it is something that affects your mind, spirit and outlook on life. After reading this book, my belief in miracles is renewed as well as my belief in the strength of the human spirit. If you are feeling down, read this book and you will re-evaluate your own life and situations in it.
A remarkable book by a truly remarkable lady!.......2007-02-08
I recently had the great fortune to meet the author, Megan, in person. She told me just bits and pieces about her experience (and adventures). And, just based on that, I could tell she was a remarkable soul. So I was thrilled when I got the chance to read her book, which affirms my first impression of her as being a true indomitable spirit, an adventurer, and a lover of life, no matter what life places at her doorstep. The book captures the very essence of this 65-year old spitfire (who recently completed a 12,000-mile bike trip...solo!). She's truly an inspiration, not only to survivors of brain injuries (of which my Dad is one) but also to anyone struggling to maintain a positive attitude along the bumpy road of life (i.e., all of us!). This quote alone is a priceless treasure: "I'm accused of being a rolling stone since I fail to gather moss. If moss be money and material possessions, it's true. My stone rolls far and wide, and rather than being blanketed with moss, it's polished as smooth and shiny as a gemstone. It glows with experiences, sparkles with adventure, dazzles with challenges to both mind and body, gleams with eager anticipation of the next quest. How much richer do I deserve to be?" Keep on rolling, Megan!!
A Truly Amazing Story.......2006-07-31
This book inspired me so much that I have recommended it to all of my friends. I hope that I would have the strength to overcome such a devastating illness with the grace, humor, and perseverance that Megan Timothy has shown. It reminded me of Lance Armstrong's book about his struggle with cancer. Since reading Megan's book, I discovered that if you contact Crone House Publishing, you can get email updates on Megan's progress as she rides her bicycle alone around the United States.

No one chills more with less than Campbell does........2003-12-26
When it comes to chilling examinations of the decaying mind, no one does it better than Ramsey Campbell. Whether the decay is literal (i.e. his mad killer stories) or symbolic (the supernatural stuff), no other writer can summon of the level of dread, isolation, and despair that Campbell can. Waking Nightmares gathers together stories from Campbell's early years (i.e. Jack In The Box) as well as his more recent work. Although some of the stories are a tad predictable (especially if you have read a great deal of Campbell's work), each is powerful in its own quiet way. I can't think of a better way to give yourself the heebie-jeebies than by reading anything by Ramsey Campbell. Highest recommendation.
intruiging, scary, exhillarating, wonderfully moody.......1999-06-11
Campbell again shows himself to be a master of mood and atmosphere with a collection of tales of a wide variety of setting and tone. Studied and effective, understated horror. In fact, he accomplishes better than horror (revulsion at something that has happened) and instead achieves terror (fear of something that *may* happen), which is Stephen King's stated highest goal. Thouroughly recommended.
This book once again proves that Campbell is the master.......1998-03-08
Ramsey Campbell is the scariest writer of fiction there is. This collection of short stories once again proves that well known fact. A student from the H.P. Lovecraft school of horror, campbell takes the reader on a phsycological journey through the most sacred and untouched realms of our minds, the realm of fear. If you read one book of horror short stories this should be it, because once you've had a taste of campbell you're hooked.

Outstanding study aid.......2007-01-16
In my study of Greek, I use two main lexicon aids: BDAG and Louw & Nida.
BDAG serves as a better source of word definition and for all uses of the word in the Bible and other literature, but Louw & Nida serves as a superb, current pointer to synonyms and antonyms. This is not the only use for this lexicon, but this is the way I use it. It is superb for word study, as a single English word may be translated from many Greek words that have different meanings. For instance, Louw & Nida has led me to over 30 words translated as 'argue', 'disagree', 'strife' and 'struggle.'
Louw & Nida must be used with the index. Without the index, it will be virtually impossible to find any word you are seeking, as they are organized according to semantic domains. The index has a Greek index, Scripture index, and topical index. These are extremely helpful in word studies, as they point to so many words and their general use.
The introduction of Louw & Nida states that this is not a traditional lexicon, but is intended to help in translation. It provides some interesting aids in this sort of definition that is not always given in BDAG. The definitions are based on current scholarship, but only list one or two instances of use in Scripture, whereas BDAG gives every instance.
If you are looking for a lexicon to supplement BDAG, BAGD, or BAG, this is a great selection to consider.
Useful.......2005-08-02
I have found this lexicon useful because it is somewhat like Trench's Synonyms, but has much wider scope. It also includes antonyms so when considering the meaning of a word similar words and their different shades of meaning can be taken into account as well as the opposites. I would still recommend the use of another lexicon, like Bauer's to check some the definitions given.
Misleading.......2003-03-01
As one review already noted, Volume 1 is useless without the supplement. Unfortunately, I had already submitted my order before finding out this information.
Pragmatic Usefulness.......2000-03-31
Only the domains are included in this book. This is Volume 1. Volume 1 is essentially useless without the indexes which is Volume 2. Buy the books as a set, ISBN: 0-8267-0343-7
The easiest lexicon to use for general translation work........1997-10-03
This is the easiest lexicon to use for general translation work, and the fastest one to look things up in. Most lexicons try to give you a feeling for the different kinds of meanings that a word might have, then point you to examples which illustrate each meaning. To really understand them, you have to digest the examples carefully. This lexicon gives fewer examples and more complete definitions, which makes it much easier to grasp the meaning quickly. It also lets you look up words in English and translate them into Greek, which can be useful for exercises that require you to write Greek. To use this lexicon, always start with the second volume and look up the word in the alphabetical list. If you don't, you will never figure out how to use it. For more reviews on lexicons, grammars, and textbooks, see "http://www.mindspring.com/~jwrobie/littleGreek.html".
