Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A nice overview of available information.......2006-02-24

This is a nice reference to introduce you general issues, anatomic structures, and therapeutic and surgical techniques involved in the care of patients with craniofacial anomalies.

5 out of 5 stars Great text for graduate students!.......2003-04-10

I have been teaching a graduate course in cleft palate and craniofacial anomalies for 20+ years. I am thrilled with Dr. Kummer's text. Students love it! It has a strong research base, but the information has excellent clinical application and is very readable with many case studies. Although it is geared toward speech-language pathologists, its multi-disciplinary orientation would make it a useful resource for any member of a cleft palate team. The information is complex enough to be useful to an experienced team member, yet the novice reader is given sufficient background information to be able to grow with the text. Exceptionally thorough and highly recommended!

Book Description

Each year, thousands of children are born with facial difference-abnormalities of the bones and tissues of the head and face that are present at birth or appear a few years later. Some conditions occur more commonly, such as cleft lip and cleft palate, while others, such as hemifacial microsomia, Treacher Collins, Apert, and Crouzon syndromes, are rarer. In addition to the emotional hardship of a different appearance and the attached stigma, some of these conditions pose special health concerns.

A resource that parents can turn to for help is Children with Facial Difference, the first comprehensive book to provide parents with up-to-date information and support.

Children with Facial Difference helps parents understand and cope with the challenges presented by their child's condition: Diagnosis; Causes and the genetic likelihood of recurrence; Emotional adjustment; Medical concerns and multi-disciplinary treatment approaches; Self-esteem; Family and community life; Speech, language, and hearing needs; Education; and Insurance issues, legal rights, and advocacy.

Each chapter of Children with Facial Difference includes parent statements, reassuring and useful bits of information and insights from parents of children with facial difference. These statements help alleviate feelings of isolation and provide comfort and support. With a foreword by Joseph E. Murray, M.D., a Nobel Prize winner in medicine and a pioneer in craniofacial surgery, this book also includes a glossary of terms, a reading list, a resource list of organizations, and an index.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A very comprehensive book; a "must" for parents/caregivers.......2000-06-01

This comprehensive book is a must for parents and caregivers of children with facial differences. It is truly a "Parents' Guide" in every sense. The contents are very well organized and lead the reader gently into the myriad of issues that many parents will need to deal with, in raising their special children. Topics that are covered include: various craniofacial conditions (Cleft lip and/or palate and syndromes such as Apert, Crouzon, Treacher Collins, Hemifacial Microsomia and others), adjustment and coping issues, medical concerns and treatments, speech, language, and hearing needs, education concerns, legal rights, health insurance and child advocacy. This book also includes an extensive reading list and resource guide. Medical terminology, that is inherent to the subject matter, is also carefully explained and a glossary was thoughtfully included.

For me and for several other parents of children with facial differences, this book has become an essential handbook, in essence, to some of us, this book has become our "Bible."

Among the various titles that the author holds, the most impressive title, is that of "Mother" of a child with a facial difference. This is perhaps the reason that this book is so amazingly comprehensive. It is quite evident that the text was written with a great deal of careful research and integrity. Too often, parents recieve erroneous information regarding their child's condition. This book, however, is one that parents, caregivers, and medical professionals can count on for accuracy.

The expensive books have been sent without bolstering in a box too big for them. That issue produced damage to the edges of the books.
        Annoying .....

2 out of 5 stars OK book, not worth more than $70-80.......2003-09-05

An OK book which covers lots of procedures, however one could NEVER get a thorough understanding of any of the procedures by reading this book. Each complex operation is way oversimplified into 4-5 basic drawings. An atlas should be a thorough description of a procedure, complete with pearls, indications, pre-op/post-op guidelines, and a thorough description with comprehensive drawings of the operative steps- this doesn't even come close.

              Book Description

Over the past decade there have been major advances in the management of patients with craniofacial trauma. These have been fuelled by new concepts and techniques arising from the elective repair of congenital craniofacial deformities, and also by the increase in survival after trauma, due to improved resuscitation techniques. More radical approaches to complex problems have been achieved by multidisciplinary teams, with close collaboration between the neurosurgeon, maxillofacial surgeon, otorhinolaryngologist, opthalmic, plastic, and accident and emergency surgeon. This book is the first to provide an multidisciplinary approach to the management of cranio-facial trauma. Each section has been written by a specialist involved in cranio-facial trauma, from the point of view of their own particular discipline, and presents vital information on the practical management strategies.

              Book Description

The new emphasis on spirituality in the workplace has been widely discussed in recent years and reported in major publications such as the Wall Street Journal and Fortune. Spirituality seems to be a basic human good essential for human flourishing. The contributors to this volume are all proponents of spirituality in the workplace, yet all raise important questions about this movement and what it means. What are the moral questions that should guide leaders? Is spirituality being treated as simply an instrumental good, valued for its usefulness in enhancing productivity and well-being? What are the responsibilities of business leaders? Of business schools and their faculty? Of churches? The essayists in this collection reflect on these and other pertinent questions.

The common thread linking these authors is that all have distinguished themselves in their respective fields or professions and all wish to advance spirituality in business. Contributors to Business, Religion, and Spirituality provide a sober, but positive, prognosis for this new growth in spirituality while offering direction for the future.

Contributors: Oliver F. Williams, C.S.C., Martin E. Marty, Laura L. Nash, Robert G. Kennedy, James J. McGee, André L. Delbecq, Edwin M. Epstein, Krishna S. Dhir, Jamal A.
